Supernatural - Weekly Question #2 - Best Death
The winter hellatus is upon us and to pass the time, we are doing a weekly question until new episodes are back. Our first weekly question over the Thanksgiving holiday was Favorite Weapon. The Colt and then the Impala won with little difficulty. Thanks to everyone who nominated and voted.
This week we are doing Best Death. To be fair, I have divided it into three categories. The Best Visceral Death is the one that had you cheering and celebrating your inner bloodthirstiness. The Best Emotional Death would be the one that moved you the most. The Best Gory Death had your skin crawling but you couldn't look away.
There you have it! Nominations go for roughly 2 days. Just add your suggestions in the comment section. Then I will narrow it down to the most nominated for the vote. Also, if you have ideas for next week's weekly question put that in the comments too.

Best Visceral Death:
ReplyDeleteComes down to two for me. Killing Ruby in Lucifer Rising and killing Zachariah in Point of No Return. Both needed to die and I got immense pleasure in watching them both ganked by their own weapons. Thoroughly satisfying.
Best Emotional Death:
This one is harder. Ellen and Jo sacrificing themselves so Dean and Sam could take down Lucifer in Abandon All Hope is high on the list and I didn't even like them for most of the series. Sam's original death in All Hell Breaks Loose was poignant because it was before EVERYONE kept coming back from the dead. Dean's death by hellhounds and Sam's reaction gets me every time in No Rest for the Wicked. Sam choosing to die to save the world in Swan Song was so heroic. So many good ones to choose from.
Best Gory Death:
This is the mother load in Supernatural given that it happens every episode. I am kind of squeamish so I don't always watch the gory stuff. Still, the deaths I remember the most are Dean chopping off the vampire's head with the saw in Bloodlust and the robber with the fork through his throat in Bad Day at Black Rock. I won't forget either one.
Nominations:
If I only get to nominate one in each category, I guess I go with Zachariah's death (Visceral), Sam's FIRST death (Emotional), and the forked robber (Gory).
Best Visceral Death:
ReplyDeleteNo doubt, Zachariah! He had it comming for sooo long.
Best Emotional Death:
Sam in all hell breaks lose 1 (Dahne explained it so well)
Best Gory Death:
Castiel beeing blown away by Lucifer in Swan song, because, man I didn´t see that one comming.
Best Visceral Death: Ruby
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death : Jo and Ellen
Best Gory Death: THe couple that ate each other My Bloody Valentine
Best Visceral Death:
ReplyDeleteNo Competition: Zachariah in 'Point of No Return'
Best Emotional Death:
For me, it was Sam's in 'All Hell Breaks Loose' from Season 2. Apart from the shock of his death, there was Dean's reaction which was heartbreaking.
Best Gory Death:
Hmm...not sure about this. I'm fairly squeamish, so I tend to watch these things from between my fingers. I guess the robber from 'Bad Day at Black Rock' who got the fork through the throat. I saw it coming as soon as he kicked the bottle, but I just couldn't look away!
best visceral death: ruby
ReplyDeletebest emotional death: ellen and jo
best gory death: guy who exploded when he turned into blood
Best Visceral Death: Death of Azazel
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death: Ellen and Jo
Best Gory Death: Dean's death in No Rest for the Wicked (Only because I DID look away for both the fork death in Bad Day in Blackrock and death by dentist in You Can't Handle The Truth)
Best Visceral Death: ---- I'm a horror fan, so I always cheer when somebody gets killed. Even if I like the character, if there is blood and gore, I'm happy. So nobody.
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death : Jo and Ellen - I know the show is about Sam and Dean but the boys just die too often for their death have to have an emotional effect but when Ellen stayed with Jo, I needed tissues.
Best Gory Death: The guy getting drilled by the dentist, in a completely non-sexy way ;D
Best visceral death = Dean kills Zachariah
ReplyDeleteBest emotional death = Sam going into the Pit
Best gory death = the couple from My Bloody Valentine that ate each other to death
Best Visceral death: Lilith in "Lucifer Rising"
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death: Dean in "No Rest For The Wicked". I liked it when Lilith didn't do an cliche monotone like every other villian in the history of tv.
Best Gory Death: Death by Buzzsaw in "The Kids Are All Right".
Visceral: Ruby no doubt. The first time I saw that episode, I definately cheered and clapped when Dean killed her...and my college roommates at the time looked at me like a was a psycho
ReplyDeleteEmotional: Tie between Sam's in All Hell Breaks Loose and Dean's in No Rest For The Wicked
Gory: Dean's in No Rest For The Wicked is still hard for me to watch whenever I see it. Castiel's in Swan Song wasn't pretty either
Best Visceral: Ruby. No doubt about it!
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional: Sam's death in all hell breaks loose. It's coz that was the first time we saw one of the brother's die! :'(
Best Gory: Probably the couple who ate themselves.. :P
Best Visceral Death: Death of Zachariah
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death: John's in In My Time of Dying
Best Gory Death: Dean's death in No Rest for the Wicked
Best Visceral Death: Zachariah
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death : Sam's Death in All Hell Breaks Loose(even now after thousand times I watched it
Dean's reaction make me cry!)
Best Gory Death: couple in My Bloody Valentine...totally gross!!
BTW great question!!:)
Best Visceral Death:
ReplyDeleteI can't decide between Zachariah in "Point of No Return" or Gordon Walker in "Fresh Blood." It was great to see Gordon finally get his just deserts. He died as the thing that he hated most and I got a kick out of watching it. I really hated him. But Zachariah's death was really satisfying because it was a really important brother moment and he was a dick. I guess I'll go with Zachariah for the brother moment.
Best Emotional Death
I guess this counts as a death, when Sam went into the pit in "Swan Song?" I think he died when that happened. Everything leading up to it was so emotional with Sam seeing the little army man and then he was in control and he sacrificed himself to throw Lucifer and Michael into the pit. That had me a blubbering mess for hours. If that doesn't count, then Sam's death in AHBL mostly because of watching Dean's reaction to it.
Best Gory Death
Has to be that couple in "My Bloody Valentine." That is just so unbelievably sick. It makes me want to throw up every time without fail.
V. Death - Even though he didn't /actually/ die, Christian, when he got his neck snapped in Family Matters.
ReplyDeleteE. Death - Madison in Heart
G. Death - Either Dean when the hell hounds rip up his torso, or Cas, when Satan 'splodes him ... of course Raphael also 'sploded him in the season 4 finale... xD .. but you actually see him /sploding in s5. O shi--... there's also Adam, when Dean finds out the ghouls made a meal out of his chest cavity as well.. o 3o
First of all - how many shows would even HAVE a poll for the best death?
ReplyDeleteMan we are disturbed ;P
Visceral Death:
Toss up here between Zachariah and Ruby - they both thoroughly deserved what they got - and I cheered long and loud for both. I think I have to go with Zach - Ruby was a demon so you kinda expect bad behavior - but Zach was an angel for pete's sake (ok we know angels are dickbags, but they're supposed to be on heaven's side)
Emotional Death:
Sam in All Hell Breaks Loose. Sure all the others people have mentioned are equally worthy, but as Dahne said it was the first time we realised Sam and Dean were vulnerable - what other show kills off its lead characters?
Gory Death:
Lots of contenders for this. I used to actively avoid gore pre-SPN - I still hide behind a pillow but I love me some SPN gore :) My choice for this is the Okami in Weekend at Bobby's because: 'woodchipper trumps everything' and I really felt bad for poor Marcy.
Best Visceral Death: Gordon for me. God he was a psycho, even if now it seems he was about everything basically.
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death: When John died in the premiere of the second season. It was so unexpected for me that I'd stared the screen for long minutes after they said: "Time of death 10:41 am"
The Best Gory Death: well I chose one because of personal reason, for me the most disgusting and terrifying was, when that witch Amanda was killed by those long cuts on her wrist in 'Malleus Mallificarum'
Best Visceral Death:
ReplyDeleteRuby in Lucifer Rising! I was so pleased when that b*tch died. XD
Best Emotional Death:
This is so hard.. it's either Sam's death in All Hell Breaks Loose, or Dean's death in No Rest for the Wicked. Hmm.. really hard XD But I guess I'm gonna have to go with.. Sam's death in All Hell Breaks Loose..
Best Gory Death:
Another hard one, since there are so many of those.. xD I guess I'm gonna go with.. the guy getting his heart cut out in Time is on My Side. I just can't imagine how FREAKED OUT I would have been if I was lying on that table, and some creepy dude would start cutting me open, and I would watch him just take my heart out! I will never forget that scene.
Best Visceral Death: Azazel and Zachariah
ReplyDeleteBest Emoitonal Death: Sam in AHBL1
Best Gory Death: Couple who ate themselves
V: The killing of the YED. Reasons - the hunt for the thing that killed Jess and their Mom and the fact that John climbed out of Hell to help his sons kills the demon. Working up to that death and the excitement felt when they finally got him. That was just awesome.
ReplyDeleteE: Joe and Ellen's death was the most emotional for me. Still makes me a little sad - so I will leave it at that.
G: I am going with the scene where Dean's uses the saw to cut off the vamps head in the episode where we first meet gordon. But a close 2nd is the couple in my bloody valentine. Ugh that was really disgusting.
Best Visceral: (also a candidate for Best GORY) Sam decapitates Gordon the psycho (Fresh Blood) / Michael fries Anna (The Song Remains the Same) / Sam kills Lilith via demon purge (Lucifer Rising) / Dean Knives Ruby (Lucifer Rising) / Dean kills Azazel (All Hell Breaks Loose, Pt 2)
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional: Honestly while heartbreak is rampant on this show, the one that's got to me the most is when Sam has to kill Madison... (Heart). I actually teared up in that episode, whereas until Swan Song, I never really cried for the Winchesters (I just felt really realllllyyy bad lol)
Best Gory: Obviously the couple eating each other in My Bloody Valentine...I mean really...I guess a few other goodies are: Castiel getting blown to bits in Swan Song (W. T . F???), that woman on the run in Crossroad Blues who gets ripped through a window, the woman who loses her teeth in Malleus Malleficarum, and honestly there are way too many to list here lol
You're kidding right? So, contrary to popular belief, SPN fans are NOT the most disturbed, rabid, lacking in judgement fans on SpoilerTV? I'm so relieved to hear that ;P
ReplyDeleteBest Visceral Death: Ruby being killed
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death: Is it wrong to want to say Crowley being killed made me emotional? Hmm... I think Ellen and Jo sacrificing themselves
Best Gory Death: Honestly I think could be the wood chipper death in Weekend at Bobby's. We did not get to see the full on grinding, but a body being made into chum in a wood chipper is some extra special fun! Plus, it reminds me a little too much of seeing a guy next to me lose 4 fingers industrial arts (or woodshop or one of those classes we were forced to take) in junior high and have blood spray on me.
Suggestion for next week: what is it about SPN that appeals to such a wide age range? Or something like that.
ReplyDeleteCrowley being killed made me somewhat emotional as well. Although it is Supernatural... a few people have mentioned it as being all part of his plan to go to purgatory. I do hope that's it.
ReplyDeleteOh God, I just read your last sentence. (Shudders)
Best Visceral Death:
ReplyDeleteRuby in "Lucifer Rising" easily. I was waiting for her to die all of S4.
Best Emotional Death:
Sam's death in "All Hell Breaks Loose Pt. 1" hands down. Every time I see it I sob & Jensen Ackles' acting in that scene? Just wow.
Best Gory Death:
Dean's in "No Rest for the Wicked" especially considering the emotional aspect to it. Oh, and the couple in the beginning of "My Bloody Valentine," if only for the girl's friend's description of how she found them. *shudder*
Best Visceral Death: Ruby in "Lucifer Rising" - She REALLY had it coming (with honorable mentions to Zachariah, Gordon (also quite gory), and Crowley)
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death: Sam in "All Hell Breaks Loose" - I agree, that as it was the first, and with Dean's reaction, it's just heartbreaking...
Best Gory Death: Dean in "No Rest for the Wicked" - I was strongly tempted to go with Cas in Swan Song but I think in a way, it was too quick...
Best Visceral Death:
ReplyDeleteRuby in Lucifer Rising (so glad I was right about her)
Best Emotional Death:
John's in In My Time of Dying (sniff)
Best Gory Death:
Gordon losing his head in Fresh Blood (The best bad guy ever!!!)
Best Visceral Death: I think I would have to say Ruby, with Zachariah a close second.
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death: Dean in No Rest for the Wicked. (However Sam's deaths in both season 2 & 5, John's death, & Ellen and Jo's death all kill me too =(. )
Best Gory Death: The couple that eat each other in My Bloody Valentine.. Yuck ...
Best Visceral Death:
ReplyDelete[All 3 of these nominations are back stabbers and liars, they deserved to die]
Supernatural - Ruby Season 4 Episode 22 "Lucifer Rising"
Supernatural - Anna Season 5 Episode 13 "The Song Remains The Same"
Spartacus: Blood & Sand - Batiatus Season 1 Episode 13 "Kill Them All"
Best Emotional Death:
Supernatural - Jo and Ellen Season 5 Episode 10 "Abandon All Hope" (Jo & Ellen sacrifice themselves for Sam & Dean)
Supernatural - Sam and Bobby Season 5 Episode 22 "Swan Song" (Sam jumps into hell/Bobby is killed by Lucifer)
Spartacus: Blood & Sand - Varro Season 1 Episode 10 "Party Favors" (Spartacus is ordered to kill his only friend by young boy for a game)
Heroes - Jeremy Greer Season 4 Episode 67 "Strange Attractors" (Police dragged him behind truck)
Best Gory Death:
Supernatural - Castiel Season 5 Episode 22 "Swan Song" (Blows Up)
Spartacus: Blood & Sand - Solonius Season 1 Episode 12 "Revelations" (Guts fall out of stomach)
[Pretty much any death on Spartacus: Blood & Sand is Gory]
This is a Supernatural poll - good choices though :)
ReplyDeleteLOL. So you're saying we should all start watching Spartacus? What channel is it shown on in the USA?
ReplyDeleteBest Visceral Death: YED -- it was the first of many well deserved demises and the culmination of 22 years of the Winchesters quest.
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death: Ellen and Jo. The only time I really cried. Samantha Ferris was amazing.
Best Gory Death: Really? We have to chose one? Hmmm... Gordon's head popping off like a dandelion. That was cool.
Starz a premium cable channel, but season 1 is out on DVD, with a "prequel" companion series 'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" to air in January. They did the prequel thing since the lead actor who plays Spartacus got cancer and they pushed back filming to accommodate his treatment schedule when the thought he was in remission.... of course, then it turned out he had the cancer again and they are now looking for a new actor to replace him and carry on the series.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I find the scenes my mind is allowed to fill in the details and gore more gorey than the full shot gore scenes. Not sure if that says more about me, or more about the old saying that the most effective violence is "implied" violence.
ReplyDeleteBest emotional death was when John Winchester gave up his own life to save Dean's "In my time of dying"
ReplyDeleteBest gory death is each time poor Castiel is blown up into pieces
Best visceral death was of course damn Ruby "Lucifer rising"
There are so many to chose but that's what a great show gives you!!!!
A couple that haven't been mentioned (I don't think)
ReplyDeleteVisceral: Bela - another death we didn't actually see. Another death where I cheered.
Also in the visceral category, Uriel, Brady, and Alastair
Gory: Nuked Tinkerbell - again with the implied gore.
Extra categories:
Most anticipated death this season: Grandpa Creepy!
Most anticlimactic death of the entire series: Crowley
Great choice for the emotional death, I had completely forgotten about Madison. I cry my eyes out every time I watch that episode.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that Crowley's death was anticlimactic (and I was very sorry to see him go), I was delighted by the way that Castiel went about it. None of the usual 'I am going to kill you, and this is why' monologue that we usually endure before someone is killed, just 'Can you help Sam?'...no? Ok. *death* No chance for Crowley to fight back or anything, it makes more sense than the usual drawn out way they do deaths on TV.
ReplyDeleteBest Visceral Death: This is hard.... I mean there are so many people I was glad to see dead. Hmmm... I think I'll have to go with Ruby. That bitch had it coming for her.
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death: I have to pick that one that made be bawl like a baby, Sam's death at the end of season 2. I mean seriously, I literally was hugging to a pillow with one hand and drying my eyes with the other.
Best Gory Death: Phew.... easiest one ever. The one where Sam took off Gordon's head with a wire. I can never ever forget that scene, it was just so so gory! :/
Hah Jillyane, you know what that means right? ;) We need to convert more people to the dark side >:)
ReplyDeletevisceral death: Zachariah omg i so wanted him dead :) n i cheered loud when Dean stuck him with knife:
ReplyDeletePOINT OF NO RETURN
emotional death: Sam dying and laying there on the bed and Dean talking to him :( makes me tear up every time . ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE.
gory death: where the couple eat themselves to death ewwww.
MY BLOODY VAlentine.
Best Visceral Death One was definitely Ruby's death. I jumped into the air and literally screamed YES. lol The second choice would have been Zechariah's death. Dean got to gank them both. I Ruby first because Sam, who she had fooled so badly and gotten addicted to demon blood, held her so Dean could kill her.
ReplyDeleteBest emotional Death One was Sam's death in Swan Song. It even won an award for Dean's taking that beating almost to the death to stay with his little brother and see him through. Second is tied between Sam's death in All Hell Breaks Loose and Jo and Ellen's deaths.
Best Gory Death One Dean's being torn apart by the Hell Hounds in season 3. Castiel's being blown to pieces in Swan Song.
Best Emotional Death : Tie between the first time Dean died and Sam jumping into the pit. I think the edge has to go to Sam....after all he did save the world by sacrificing himself, add that to Dean's anguish and Sam's death at the end of Season 5 is a clear winner.
ReplyDeleteBest Visceral Death for me would be Yellow Eyes. In a lot of shows the main villain never dies. It was nice to see Yellow Eyes die and opening up the show to new plot lines and a new villains.
It's the characterizations. Supernatural is not a teen's story like Twilight and all of those. Supernatural is a well-written, fantastically acted story. It draws one in no matter what the age. A couple of years ago Jensen was asked how it felt to be a teenage sex symbol or something along that line. He said we're not. We attract women from the age of 35 and up. They also carry a large group of military people. They do have young people, but if you get on Live Journal, Twitter, My Space, and Facebook, the demographics are way different. Much older. It is not just a couple of great looking young men or a romantic stuff. It's great horror. Great drama. Great comedy. Great family values. Yeah it attract for a large variety of reasons, but they are reasons that would attract a large, varied age group.
ReplyDeleteI forgot that couple in My Bloody Valentine. I gagged.
ReplyDeleteBEST VISCERAL DEATH - Hands down.....DEATH OF RUBY....She wrecked my head throughout season 4, with woeful acting to boot......When Sam grabs her, and Dean stuck her own Knife into her......not joking here....The most Satisfying moment i've experienced in this show, and relief that i didn't have to look/listen to her anymore.
ReplyDeleteBEST EMOTIONAL DEATH - OH def SAM'S DEATH at the end of season 2......First time losing one of the boys.....And Dean.....God....just thinking of it now.....Just soul Crushing, with extra tears.....I knew after this, that this was the kind of show that was going to emotionally exhaust me, on a regular basis.
BEST GORY DEATH - can't decide between SAM GAROTTING GORDON WITH RAZOR WIRE.....and COUPLE EATING EACH OTHER TO DEATH.......Hmmmm i'll go with SAM cause.....This was the first time i had to look away from the TV.
'seeing a guy next to me lose 4 fingers in industrial arts (or woodshop or one of those classes we were forced to take) in junior high and have his blood spray on me.'
ReplyDelete:O :O :O
Can i say TRAUMA......Jesus !!!
Totally agree - no explanation given, none needed.
ReplyDeleteJust.....as a villain I love to hate, I expected him to be around a bit longer and to have a more spectacular end.......for me it wasn't nearly as satisfying as watching Dean stab Zach in the throat or Sam and Dean together wasting Ruby.......
I wanted to be able to cheer and do a little happy dance like I always do when douches bite it .......but it didn't happen..... :(
My husband is watching Spartacus - for me it's one of those 'I'll get around to it' shows - but if he's sticking with it it must be ok . (Having said that he also likes Two and A Half Men - so I'm not sure his opinion counts here ;P - but then again he does watch SPN so maybe TAAHM is just an aberration)
ReplyDeleteIronically one of the reasons I haven't got around to watching Spartacus is that I know it's gory and bloodthirsty (says the SPN gore-freak) so I'm obviously a bit schizophrenic about that - among other things ;P
I really think its time to have the discussion about the appeal of SPN to a wide age range - there are obviously a few people around SpoilerTV who believe we're all tweens who get sucked in by a pretty boy or two. I'm prepared to reveal my age to all and sundry to prove a point, if it helps. ;P
ReplyDeleteBest Visceral Death - cannot decide, Yellow Eyes aka Azazel, Ruby or Zachariah. Ruby and Zach were freakin annoying but killing Yellow Eyes was kind of the whole point of the first two seasons. I will definitely have a problem choosing one in this poll.
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death - Sam in 2x21. Just too heartbreaking. Although John's death is a close second.
Best Gory Death - definitely Cas's explosion in Swan Song. Mostly because it was so shocking and fast. But those people eating each other were very gore too.
Yeah, I would have loved him to be around for longer, he was definitely one of my all time favourite villains. :-( Hmmm...on a side note, wouldn't it be ironic if he ended up in Purgatory? After all, what's to say that demons don't go to the same place as monsters when they die.
ReplyDeleteWell, we do have an unusually wide female fan base, and I'm willing to bet that 80% of the fans on this site are women. I can see why the odd person would think that.
ReplyDeleteMyself, they can't say I've been sucked in by a pretty boy cause I'm a guy. :)
Well I thought that too, but someone somewhere shot me down - apparently demons are human souls turned bad after being in hell, but they're not in the same category as the monsters who go to purgatory. No doubt someone will correct me if I've got that wrong ;P
ReplyDeleteSo according to that logic, Crowley couldn't be in purgatory :(
Dammit!
That's what I mean - time to knock some of those assumptions on the head, drag them out the door, and beat the crap out of them......
ReplyDeleteOh did I mention I'm a pacifist? ;P
Really? Darn, the irony of that concept would have been almost too delicious! I wonder where they go then? Going to hell would be a bit superfluous, and I can't imagine they're let into heaven.
ReplyDeleteThese might have to be a different poll. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love that they killed YED too. It was a delightful surprise because it showed how much TPTB were willing to take risks. It also allowed the plot to open in ways it would not if YED was still around.
ReplyDeleteDean Winchester - Villain Killer. For some reason, I really, really like this!
ReplyDeleteBest Visceral Death - Sam killing Gordon Walker by garroting his head off with razor wire. Easy call for me.
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death - Jo and Ellen go boom.
Best Gory Death - Wood chipper.
Best Visceral Death - Ruby (and Anna, too)
ReplyDeleteBest Emotional Death - Sam's jump (actually, I was teary trough the whole episode)
Best Gory Death - The My-Bloody-Valentine-couple
Ha, you should see the polls we had for Lost when it was on,
ReplyDeleteWe had over 6000+ polls on Lost.
Ha, not in terms of numbers.
