Best One-Shot Antagonist or Monster (Season 3)

We are now half way into this week's voting. Season 1 has been decided, season 2 is still going strong, and here's the poll for season 3. Comments on your voting choice are much appreciated.

There's still time to vote for best antagonist/monster of season 2. Vote here. Old polls and recaps can be found here.

  1. This extremely long, very convoluted post is for you, yavemiel. I hope you enjoy! :-P

Season 3 is middling for me. It's not the arduous decision that season 1 was but it's not as clear-cut as season 2. I hate Ghostfacers so as creepy awesome as I'm sure Freeman Daggett is, I had to look him up on IMDB because I forgot who he was. The crocotta gave the opposite reaction; I wish I could forget it. It brought back John Winchester, if only in voice, which borders on unforgiveable. Plus I don't go for prank callers. The realtor changeling was scary strong and her outfit was scary too, but she was no match for Katie, the changeling kid who could not die. Coming back from being drowned and asking for ice cream propelled her into top 10 scariest kids category. She joins Melanie "I Killed Them All" Merchant and "Don't Go in the Water" Peter. A seriously demented UnKid.

Lust and especially Pride made their episode, but they suffer from being in season 3's premiere. After the dynamic season 1 and 2 premieres, this one fell flat with the demons too easily defeated. Casey on the other hand, I wish had made it. She's a demon I could actually like, which is a bit scary. If they resurrect another demon who does not go by the name of Crowley, I vote for Casey. I mean if Meg can come back 2 billion times, why not her? Doc Benton was terrifying. I admit it. He was also unusual, which tends to get my vote. However, I never liked him as a villain. I think because this storyline was a waste of valuable get Dean out of hell time. Dean was never going for it so I wanted them to move on. Doc falls victim to bad timing and a short season that already wasted an episode with Ghostfacers.

Which leads me to my conundrum: Katie, Callie, Tammi, or the Carrigans. The idea of Callie was original. I loved young and older Callie, but her dad really made the episode. She just laid around or watched. Tammi was evil on three levels - suburban busybody, coven leader, and hell demon - hard to top. She squicked me out but she really gets points for taking out Ruby for awhile. I hated Ruby and when she shut her up, I cheered. Too bad she was ganked before finishing the job. Still, in the end it's pagan gods/Donna Reed wannabes that get my vote. They were so perfectly suburban in their evil, their lines so iconic, that I vote Carrigan. It's not even a tough choice between them for me. I can see Madge without Edward, but not Edward without Madge. Besides, she has a swear jar, wears a Betty Crocker apron to torture people, and taught Dean to say "fudgin'". It doesn't get better than that folks.

  2. Well I don't know.....
Doc Benton creeped me out ....I often wonder if he's still buried in that old refrigerator....pounding on the door 'let me out, let me out...' ick....
I liked how Dean flat out refused to have anything to do with the Doc's recipe for eternal life, even though he was so close to his date with the hell hounds......

Callie doesn't really count for me...I loved Bedtime Stories but mostly I found it funny rather than scary.

The Magnificent 7 demons didn't really do it for me either....I don't know, I just didn't buy that the guys were seriously in danger from them......although making Isaac chug the bleach was puke inducing.....

Call me crazy (and a few people have) but I almost felt sorry for Freeman Daggett....having the Ghostfacers crash my party would sure p*** me off too....

I loved The Kids Are Alright, and the changeling kids sure were disturbing .....

I liked Casey too much to vote for her in this poll....I always think if she'd survived she might actually have been able to help the guys....but we'll never know :(

I'd like to be able to vote for the Carrigans as a matched pair, but of course I can't :( so at the risk of being labelled a copy cat, I'm going with Madge too.....
She was so cheerful in her pagan god/serial killer/suburban housewife smug superiority.....and telling Dean off for swearing!....as if that's worse than killing people, and scarring little kids for life...
She soooo deserved to be staked with her own Christmas tree....I loved that scene....loved it....

I've just read Dahne's comment through properly, and it sounds like I've just rehashed everything she said....sorry Dahne, I didn't mean to be a copy cat - we think so much alike on some things it's a little bit scary sometimes......

  3. So I have to agree with both Dahne and Jillyanne on what they said about Madge Carrigan. She was definitely my favorite bad guy from this season. She was funny & creepy all at the same time.

  4. I voted Madge.

    Insert very long reason

    here. :p

    ReplyDelete
  5. Wow. I love your reasoning. So well thought out! :D

  6. *sniff* You shouldn't have! Also, I'm going to quote, pretty much word for word, your reasons for picking Madge Carrigan as they are also mine. :)

  7. I like to put 110% into everything I do, Yavemiel.

  8. Happy to think like the commentator of the month. (Congrats!) You put in many details I hadn't thought of in my convoluted post. I agree though that the evergreen staking was just desserts. Come to think of it, most of my favorite visceral deaths come at the hands of the annoying one's own stuff. Ruby, Zachariah, and Carrigans.

  9. Well, for me this was a fairly simple choice. It's not that all the M/AOTW on this list aren't amazing (though I'll admit, I wouldn't have put either of the demons from 'The Magnificent Seven' on this list. None of them really made an impact on me), but for me, the Carrigans stand head and shoulders above the others. Quite apart from being in one of my all time favourite Supernatural episodes, they are fantastic characters, well conceived by the writers, and brilliantly realised by the actors. Their brand of evil was exceptionally violent (it doesn't get much worse than being crushed up a chimney, tortured and eaten alive) and yet they made it seem so pedestrian, tailoring it to suburbia, 'assimilating' as Madge would say. Also, they produced one of the best lines ever to come out of one of the brother's mouths: 'If you fudgin' touch me again, I'll fudgin' kill ya!' Like Dahne said: It doesn't get better than that folks.

  10. I couldn't disappoint you. Although I'm sure everybody else wishes I would have. :-P

I firmly believe that our reasons all sound the same because we all recognize awesome. And let's face it, Madge was awesome!

  11. You should quote me. Won't take as long. XD

  12. While I appreciate your enthusiasm, I am afraid you have managed to precipitate WWIII by pushing one of my buttons (labelled 'irritating mathematical inaccuracies'). I hate the phrase 110%!!! You can't be better than 100%! That's it! Otherwise, why not 300%? Why not 1000000%? Why not (infinity)% (for which I could not find the symbol on my keyboard). *takes deep breaths* Sorry Hungry Emo. You managed to tap into a well of frustration left over from years of playing sports where you are expected to perform '110%'! :)

  13. Some of the best guest star acting of all. I love Merrilyn Gann. When others were mourning the death of Ephraim and Amy's love at Everwood's cancellation, I was mourning the fact that I wouldn't see her, Tom Amandes (Harold Abbott) and Debra Mooney (Edna Harper). Spencer Garrett was pretty darn awesome too. In fact, he kind of reminded of Harold Abbott with more joy and less crankiness.

  14. ROFL...true. To quote Hungry Emo: 'Insert very long reason here'.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh, she was. I love Merrilyn Gann, though I've only seen her in about 3 guest star roles (all of which were creepy for some reason. Huh.), she's always fab.

  16. didn't find this season as exciting a choice as the first two.
deciding between Madge Carrigan and pride, i went with pride.
its just something i have with that episode, i just love it!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Madge Carrigan. You would think you'd want her for a neighbor. Oh my word!

    ReplyDelete
  18. This is a tough one! I had to choose between Madge and Dr. Benton...

    ReplyDelete
  19. Crocotta - I can't look at a telephone the same after that episode!
But Casey was cool - she would have been my second choice.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Katie the Changeling. I almost couldn'y watch that episode from all the creepiness she radiated. And the reflection in the mirror was super scary. Also, the mythology was pretty cool, not too many shows did changelings.

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is really tough... I really can't decide between Doc Benton and Madge Carrigan.

Madge was so brilliant because she taught Dean how to use the word fudge :P "You fudgin' touch me again and I'll fudgin' kill you." Absolutely awesome. I thought she was creepy because she seemed to have her perfect suburban lifestyle but underneath it was the evil pagan God with vomit inducing rituals. Also, I loved how she acted so nice about the whole thing while cutting up Sam and Dean.

Doc Benton on the other hand was just terrifying. I mean a really old man that literally steals organ parts to keep alive. A man so obsessed with immortality that he would do anything for it. Someone who is impossible to kill and is still out there, waiting for a chance to escape and get revenge. I just found that so creepy and messed up in every way possible.

In the end, I'll have to go with Doc Benton. He really had me at the edge of my seat throughout the episode :P

  22. I went with Madge Carrigan, creepy and hilarious. The only thing I remember about Casey the demon was her arm-pit stubble every-time she made a not so subtle porny pose on the ground.

  23. Hard choice between Beauty (Casey) and the Beast (Doc Bendon)!!!
I had to go with Beauty in the end!

  24. I am having a hard time with this season. When I think about the question... "Best One-Shot A/M OTW" .... I want to choose the one that contributed the most to that episode they were in. I ask myself: "Did the monster bring anything to the table." In my research this is what I have come up with.

    Callie (Bedtime Stories)
Very interesting episode. It was really cool to see SPN bring the Grimm stories to life. The interaction btw Sam and Dean during this epi was too funny for words.... "I am not kissing a frog." This would should be a contender.

    Casey (Sin City)
Outside of bringing new information to the table, I just did not see the problem with her. She was not out to hurt Sam or Dean. Yes she did kill others, but she actually saved Dean from her Preacher lover.

    Crocatta (LDC)
Can I just say ewwwwww :) And to use John as a tool to get to the boys. That was a great monster and to shrug the liability off onto the porn happy basement guy, yeah that was a twist. And the interaction it brought out btw the brothers about their Father's death..... that was just some great writing.

    Doc Benton (TIOMS)
Creepy!!!! I with others here wondering if he is beating on the fridge door to this day. It was great to see the lengths that Sam would go to....to save Dean. Even if it is turning him into frankenstein. Sam on the table with Doc Benton wanting to take his eyes. I was cringing the whole time.

    Edward & Madge (AVSC)
I am not sure how I feel about these two. The part where they ripped Sam's finger nail off and were about to take Dean's tooth....and then they answer the doorbell like a scene from "Leave it Beaver" was just epic.

    Freeman Daggett (Ghostfacers)
Uhhhhhh. No comment here. Did not really notice him in the episode and was not one of the things that I remember from the episode. Had to actually look him up to find out which character he was in the episode.

    Jeremy Frost (DALD)
He was an interesting character, but most the epi focused on the nightmares the main characters face in their sub-conscious. The only thing he did for the episode was bring in the dream root for the characters. Now I hate the fact that he beat on Sam but he really did not play tooo much of a pivitol part of the episode.

    Kate & Realtor (KAAR)
as creepy as the kid was....I was more focused on Ben and if he really was Dean's son. The Realtor, really????

    Any of the Magnificent Seven
They kind of remind me of that scene from "Scream 2".....you know where we see Drew Barrymore for the first 5 mins before she dies. In my mind they were just filler monsters to introduce Ruby and to let us know what kind of monsters were let out when the door was opened.

    Tammi (MM)
Now she was great. To see Dean "Poor little bunny." It was also great to hear Ruby's back story. I have always loved Dean's reaction to witches :)

I have such a hard time choosing. Ya'll are doing a great job with the list. SPN has had a lot of good characters come and go on this show. I just wish it was Jan 28th already. Especially b/c I want to see how SPN is going to do............was going to say, but wasn't sure if anyone had read the spoilers yet or not and this is not a spoiler thread and I do not want to ruin it for anyone else. Everyone have a SAFE!!! and HAPPY!!!! New Year :)

  25. I love how you research your answers so thoroughly. Gold star for you. :-)

  26. Thank you :) I still have not voted yet b/c I can't decide who to choose :( I think I will stay out of this one and see where it ends up.

  27. Meh, your reasoning differs from mine.
The Crocotta was easily the "djinn" of season 2 (effect-laden wild monster...)
I ADORE Madge. She's easily my favorite, but, I'm going for the scary thing... So I voted the crocotta.

  28. She was in that "The Village" episode of Smallville this year lol

  29. The changelings represented by Katie. They were creepy and scary, the moment that got me most was when she was sitting all wet in the kitchen after her mother tried to drown her, asking for ice cream with that creepy smile. And the first time her mother saw the thing's true visage in the mirror/table whatever (don't remember). The changelings in their real form were totally scary.

  30. I know! And playing a strangely similar role...granted it was meteor freak instead of pagan god, and more Amish than suburbia...but the homicidal tendencies remained!

    ReplyDelete
  31. This was a tough choice between Casey and Madge for me. It came down to the fact that I ended up rooting for Casey in the end. She seemed more like a misguided person than a demon. She had evil intentions until she got to know Dean and then actually tried to get her demon buddy to not kill him. She liked him. And so, I kind of see her as heroic more than actually evil -- not an easy feat for a demon.

So I had to go with Madge. Loved the over the top Christmas spirit and the "fudgin" language made me laugh. The pulling off of Sam's fingernail still makes me wince, but the Carrigans did it all with a smile like they deserved the sacrifice and the boys were inconsequential. After all, what's a few sacrifices a year really? As for evil -- she had a plastic couch cover. 'Nuff said.

  32. When I push little old ladies over, I like to give 150%.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lol, glad you apportion appropriate percentages when considering the importance of the task.

  34. Casey Duh. I love her so much. Meg might have been the first and Ruby has been around the longest but my favorite female is still Casey. That red top, the way she made fun of Dean and then showed just a tiny bit of compassion when she asked her demon-boyfriend to not kill Dean, is simply awesome and she looked smoking hot. ;D
