Supernatural - How will Dawn Ostroff's leaving the CW effect Supernatural?
22 Dec 2010
SupernaturalTV Guide is reporting that Dawn Ostroff will be leaving the CW by the end of this TV season. Ostroff has been head of the CW since its inception. No word on who will replace her.
So what do you think this means for our show? Is this a boon for Supernatural or will someone else's vision be detrimental? How do you think this will effect the CW as a whole?

I think it will depend on who replaces Ostroff, how it will effect the show. I don't see how they can promote it less or treat it worse. I know it will not have any effect on Supernatural's fans. Wouldn't it be awesome to have a network runner that actually cares about Supernatural?
ReplyDeleteI never really liked her, so I say good riddance. I just hope whoever takes her place will treat Supernatural with the respect it deserves; unlike Ostroff who probably forgot, somewhere along the way, that the show still exists.
ReplyDeleteNot really concerned... although pleasantly surprised by the quality of this season I still feel like it should have ended after season 5
ReplyDeleteAs much as she didn't do anything for Supernatural, better the devil you know. At least we knew where Supernatural stood in her eyes. It seem like Season 7 was a pretty big possibility. Now, depending on who replaces her, it could go either way. Here's hoping she stays in just long enough to renew it. xD
ReplyDeleteI think they have to renew it regardless. They don't have a lot to replace it and it is getting pretty good ratings for the network. If anything, they would at least give it a partial season. My guess is that the new person will really effect the 2012-2013 season more than next year.
ReplyDeleteI think we'll get one last seventh season, and that'll be it.
ReplyDeleteThis summer I would have agreed with you. Now I want to see how this plays out. This season is turning out vastly superior than last year in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteAt the 100th episode party when she appeared to be interviewed, she had basically no idea of the concept of the show other than two brothers who killed demons. Over five years, 100 episode, its highest ratings and that's all she knew? I pray we get someone who can see what this show has to offer and will start doing something for it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I look forward to it. I hope for at least two more seasons. Jensen and Jared were offered two more years and signed contracts for the network.
ReplyDeleteI hope not. It will depend on what they do with the story next year. If they are smart and go with what works, they could very well keep good ratings and go for an 8th season. We will have to see what happens.
ReplyDeleteThis can only be a good thing.
ReplyDeleteIt's not like Supernatural can be treated any worse.
I totally agree that this season is better than 5, but it's still struggling for me in comparison to seasons 2 and 4 (4 being my personal favorite). Plus I prefer graceful ending vs pulled plug (or alternative filmed) ending.
ReplyDeleteThat's true. I think it's probably the 4th highest and so they've got a fair few they can chop off before that.
ReplyDeleteHey I'm looking for a job right now
ReplyDeletePick me! Pick me!
ReplyDeleteI know all about Supernatural.......
And I care about it.......
And I bet I could do better at promoting it......
I would hire you Jillyanne, but you do know that you have to be cognizant of all the other shows too, right? You'd have to follow Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill and 90210 also. Although OTH's actors seem ready to pull the plug themselves so you might be down one.
ReplyDeleteAwwww crap.....
ReplyDeleteI think it depends on who exactly replaces her. Whoever replaces her shouldn't have an effect for Supernatural but I am worried about other shows like Nikita or One Tree Hill.
ReplyDeleteI have a minion position open.
ReplyDeleteAt least Supernatural has good timing - winning the TV Guide cover should put us in the new person's mind. Hopefully we will follow it up with a People's Choice Award.
ReplyDeleteSorry. Don't work for douches......
ReplyDeleteAlthough as a minion for the new King of hell I would get privileges right?.........
yeah - you get to burn first. Nothing like being a demon shield for a Hungry Emo.
ReplyDeleteyeah but I also might get to kiss a Winchester babe next time one of them dies.....
ReplyDeleteWe have to wait.
ReplyDeleteAt this point it's 50/50, Dawn Ostroff has allowed Supernatural to survive this long but the next person could axe all the paranormal shows from the CW since Smallville is ending this year. The only other left is Vampire Diaries but VD is more of a teen angst story rather than sci-fil like Supernatural and Smallville. Also Nikita should be worried since its not the typical CW show, which typically targets teens and young adults.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand we could get someone who loves Science Fiction and we could see more sci-fi shows and Supernatural could then get the promotion it deserves.
I personally still feel that Supernatural should have ended after season 5, season 6 hasn't had the same feeling and most of the new episodes are horrid. I would like to see where this season goes but I don't know what there going to do to top the apocalypse? Also I want the Supernatural team to be employed as long as possible but I'm scared that Supernatural will fade out rather than end with a bang.
This is trufax.
ReplyDeleteOOH, BURN.
ReplyDeleteSays the King of Hell.
Well, she didn't exactly showed the proper appreciation to SN, one of the few shows that brought viewers to CW, so I'm not sad that she's leaving... How much worse can the new boss be??? There are only three shows right now that "count" on CW: TVD, Supernatural and Smallville (I only watch SN) and with Smallville ending this season any boss of the CW should be retarded or suicidal not to renew SN for a seventh season!
ReplyDeleteyou should see how badly its treated in australia :(
ReplyDeleteIt depends on who replaces her, but my feeling is that they'd want to get rid of it within the next two years anyway.
ReplyDeleteChannel 10's abysmal programming forced me onto to Bittorrent - and for that I am grateful.
ReplyDeleteGiven the fact that Supernatural won the TV Guide cover shows what a large fan base it has. I believe it is set to replace Smallville as the CW's most popular show. I think it is impressive that the ratings have held given the move to Friday night. The show is as good as ever, and, if you are really a true fan, you should have a little faith. I don't think that the new exec will change the network. It has been too successful so far.
ReplyDeleteYES!! The evil head of the CW is gone and we might finally get someone that gives a damn about Supernatural and promote it properly!! I swear though, if the new person that replaces her treats Supernatural like how shes doing now, I might literally have to hunt him/her down.
ReplyDeleteBesides, they will be incredibly stupid to even think about canceling Supernatural this year. Especially with Smallville ending. So I pray that we will get someone who cares about Supernatural and gives it the respect it deserves.
As a Smallville fan I say good ridance to her.She treated Smallville as a stepchild.Moving Smallville to
ReplyDeletefriday nights showed how low she thought of Smallville.Smallville has survived 5 years on the CW due to
It's fans not her.She barely ever promated it.This last season of Smallville has had the most promation
since season 6 the first CW season.
A new CW President may no longer have the strange obsession to keep One Tree Hill on the air.
They might move Supernatural back to Thursday.Nikita Fans should be more worried than
Supernatural fans although maybe a new president will try to have shows men can watch too.
We might get a new president that would actually make CW a respected network instead of making a zillion stupid teen flicks that has tons of overused storylines and whiny characters.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're in a very very very small minority who feels this way, just FYI.
ReplyDeleteI believe Vampire Diaries will continue to be the CW's number one show, but this should put Supernatural at 2 or 3, depending on what happens with America's Next Top Model, barring a new hit show. But it should show the new head exactly how passionate Supernatural fans are about our show. I doubt that the new person would want to start by getting rid of one of the network's most popular shows, especially one with such vocal fans. However, I do believe that major changes are in the works for the CW in the 2012-2013 season. The CW is a massive money drain for CBS and they have to find a way to get it up to the popularity of the WB before it. Hopefully this will mean less niche programming (targeting women 12-34) and more shows with a broader scope. I expect them to reach out to males more and hopefully older people like me. Then maybe people could say they watch the CW without being laughed at.
ReplyDeleteThe CW has 3 genre shows right now, which is incredibly fantasy/sci fi heavy for a network that only has 10 shows. Plus they are looking at pilots for 2 new fantasy/sci fi shows so I think there is some interest there. Or at least under Dawn's leadership there were. I think this is a bad sign for Supernatural actually because I wouldn't expect them to have 2 full days of genre programming. Still I think SPN is safe for next year at least.
ReplyDeleteAs horrible as it sounds in my own ears - and I cannot believe I say that - I'd rather had no new season at all than half a season.
ReplyDeleteThis show deserves to end either with a bang or gracefully. They should be able to tell whatever story to the end and not beiing chopped of in the middle.
This said, I so hope we do get another season!
....and New Zealand.......still waiting for season 5 here.
ReplyDeleteThank god for the 'intranet'.......
What does CW stand for anyway? Candy-ass Wimps?......Colossal Waste?.......Complete Wussies?..........
ReplyDeleteGive me a minute and I'll think of some more......
It can only help the series. Maybe the new replacement will start trying for other demos and let the series expand past young adults and teenagers..
ReplyDeleteContrary to what most commentators are thinking, I say that if Spn survived 5 years on it, she should stay. This new person could be a whole lot worse. If it's not sort of broken, don't sort of fix it.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the writers know that at the beggining of the season it will be the last (like now with smallville) we will get a nice ending. thats what I'm hoping for. If they learn it like 2 eps before the end then it will suck
ReplyDeleteAgree, this news scares me so much ahhaa. I felt like spn was safe but maybe the new guy will think it need something fresh or what ever :S We'll see.
ReplyDeletesame here. and i now do it for every show
ReplyDeleteits sad how they attempted to conitune season 5 again then stopped 2 episodes later!!
I have an answer but I can't put it for fear of being banned.
ReplyDeleteI'd go with Completely Worthless, but they do still have Supernatural so I'll have to leave that one for later.
ReplyDeleteHmm....interesting. But I guess it'll depend on who replaces the woman. But her leaving, after hearing some things about how poorly she's made choices for the network, its a long time coming. Hopefully, with someone new, they will realize the potential SPN has (even if its somewhat questionable at the moment) and promote it a little better. Us fans shouldn't have to do all the work doing it, even if we enjoy it (cause I wouldn't stop shoving out SPN greatness ever). Opportunity to branch out for the network itself is up in arms, but hopefully this will do SPN well.
ReplyDeleteHope this makes sense. lol Sometimes I write and things end up all jumbled. :)
wow, horrid is a might strong word, lol
ReplyDeleteI don't know much about the CW but I do know how poorly Ostroff's been treating Supernatural. Hopefuly, this new person will care less about teen angst, sex and highschool and focus on what really holds up the CW. SPN has so much potential and she doesn't bother to acknowledge it, which makes her leaving hopeful to me.
ReplyDeleteAnd if is the new person tries some funny buisness with SPN, us fans will eat them alive >:D
Has no one learned? It is not the CW that has made Supernatural what it is. It is the writers, actors, Kripke and especially the fans that have made the show stay on as long as it has! I have had a problem with the CW since it took over the WB (or for historical references...The WB started Supernatural in 2005 before being bought out by the CW in 2006). I think anyone will be better than what is going on now. Some of the shows on the CW are beyond weird (example: there is a new show coming on after ANTM called shedding for the wedding. It was created by the guy whose is doing NBC's Biggest Loser. Really?? you have to ride on the coat tales of another network). The CW took over an awesome nextwork when they bought the WB --- with great shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Roswell, Angel, 7th Heaven, Dawsons Creek, Everwood and the list could go on and on. Outside of Smallville and Supernatural what shows have held on for 6 seasons on the CW. Sorry I am venting......It is just this question rubbed on an old wound I have. I hope I did not offend anyone. I am just a hardcore fan of TV and movies and actually anything cinema related and I just hate to see something brought down by bad management.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't want to learn! IGNORANCE POLICY! IGNORANCE POLICY!
ReplyDeleteI see your point, but there's still the fact that Supernatural's survived 5 years on this hated network. Dawn hasn't been able to kill it yet. The next person could.
No, you didn't offend me. :)
OH you're a Kiwi!
ReplyDeleteNo wonder we're able to playfull insult each other so well!
'OH you're a Kiwi!'
ReplyDeleteSo that means you're an Aussie?
Oi,oi,oi.........
And who said anything about 'playful'?
Oh and Merry Christmas Hungry.......
ReplyDeleteOMG I think I know your answer. :P
ReplyDeleteTouche, Madame Kiwi. Touche.
ReplyDeleteAnd Murray Christmas to you, Jillyanna. I do hope Santa bypassed your house...
ReplyDelete... cos we all know he is an evil robot who seeks out people to torture and murder.
We're so telephathetic.
ReplyDeleteThe next person SHOULD treat Supernatural better. It is the ONLY show we watch on the CW. We are not tweens so I do not think we are the correct dempgraphics for their target audience. LOL.
ReplyDeleteNo, no, I totally see your point!
ReplyDeleteI live in London, and I saw the advetrts for season five of Supernatural, and they went all out, using Marble Arch to advertise Supernatural, and as far as I know nothing happen in the US.
I can only hope that the person that takes over Dawn will treat Supernatural better.
