Supernatural - Episode 6.11 - Appointment in Samarra - Recap / Review

Dec 12, 2010

Preface:  I was WRONG!  Completely, thoroughly, absolutely wrong!  I said there was no way that Sam gets his soul back this episode.  I knew for sure that they would keep us hanging over the hiatus.  I was prepared to be Kripked for over a month.  But I was wrong.  And I really hate that.
Previously - Death was scarily awesome and helped stop the Apocalypse, Tessa was a pretty reaper, Balthazar collected souls, Cas warned Dean about Sam's soul, and RoboSam was happy being soulless.

In a back room of a Chinatown??? (place cards please) butcher shop, Freddy Krueger, M.D. needs a refresher on sterilization and interpersonal relations.  He may have stitched up John but Dean wants some personal space and maid service.  Blade Runner Babe has no bedside manner and Dean is okay with a 75% survival rate.  Awww, he has a note for Ben if he dies.  (Nice handwriting.)  Dr. Freddy wonders why not Sam, but Dean responds, "If I don't make it back, nothing I say is going to mean a damn thing to him."  Doc gives Dean 3 minutes death time and I flashback to Flatliners.  I love that movie!  "Good times."

Dean spouts Latin and Tessa appears.  Good to see you.  She prefers Sudan and is ticked Dean summoned her.  "You're kidding me.  You died to ask for a favor."  I think that's extreme too.  Tessa won't give up Death's location but Death comes to them.  "Hello Dean."  Death's scary even in two words.  Great job casting Julian Richings because he combines the power and creepiness of Death and his voice is perfect.  Dean tries bargaining for Sam's soul but Death knows the ring's location.  Dean has "hubris but no leverage."  He squawks but Death calls him out.  "Quit shuffling and deal."  Dean wants Sam's soul and all of Adam out of the cage.  "As a rule I don't bring people back."  Death says he can have one brother, so Dean of course picks Sam.  I would too.  I can't stand the concept of Adam.  Death knows that Sam's soul is "filleted to the raw nerve" and Dean wants him to "hack the hell part off" but it doesn't work like that.  Death can do mind construction to keep Sam from remembering hell.  Tessa tells Dean it's not permanent, but Dean wants the "spiritual dry wall".

Yet not so fast - Dean must be Death for 24 hours, wearing his ring without taking it off.  Death takes a holiday.  I don't blame him, being Death must suck out loud.  Death is about to explain why when Dr. Freddy and Sean Young bring Dean back.  "You couldn't have given me 5 more seconds?"  "Son, you were gone for 7 minutes."  Nelson was under 12 minutes in Flatliners.  Great scene between Dean and Death.  I love how Dean is nervous and deferential (well as much as he can be) with Death.  However, the Things That Confuse Me list pokes me and I wonder about Death's ring.  Presumably it holds Death's power to kill people but if Dean has had the ring for over a year, he obviously doesn't need it.  People have died that year.  But if he already has the power, why make the ring?  Does Death like accessories?  Speaking of which, if you were one the most powerful creatures in the universe, would you wear a tie?  I'd be in sweats, a t-shirt, and flip flops.  Screw appearance!

RoboSam is unhappy with the plan, especially since the wall "could last a lifetime."  Way to spin that one Dean!  RoboSam's right to worry over the fine details.  "It's my life, it's my soul and it sure as hell ain't your head that's going to explode when this whole scheme of yours goes sideways."  Bobby breaks it up, asking for the bottom line but Dean doesn't want to say.  "I'm sorry I didn't get that."  Dean comes clean about Death's dare and RoboSam heads to where they buried Death's ring.  Nice hiding

space by the way.  "Sam, I'm your brother.  I'm not going to let you get hurt.  I know what I'm doing here."  Really?  Dean reassures RoboSam that he won’t let it go wrong and RoboSam says he trusts Dean.  Dean walks off but tells Bobby to watch RoboSam.  I love that brief exchange.  RoboSam and Bobby go inside.  RoboSam:  "So is this the part where you pull a gun on me and lock me in the panic room?"  Bobby:  "Do I have to?"  RoboSam says no and Bobby breathes that they all have to do what they have to do.  There is a lot of tension.  Creepy RoboSam is visiting today instead of Funny RoboSam.  I get ready to grip my pillow.

Back in the yard, Death's bling gets a close-up.  "Here goes everything."  Dean is transported…somewhere…to be blasted by Tessa.  "Wow, just let any slack-jawed haircut be Death these days."  Tessa doesn't like the idea or Dean, since he screws things up.  Tessa grabs the exposition fairy's wand and explains the job.  She has a list of people to die.  Dean touches them; she reaps them; they move on.  Meanwhile RoboSam bakes angel stew and Balthazar is equally happy to be summoned by a

Winchester.  "Sam Winchester…this had better be good."  Balthy thinks RoboSam's an idiot, being that he wants to kill the Winchesters, but RoboSam cries "desperate times."  Balthy's not near as intimidating as Death.  He is irate since "the last time we met you wanted to fry my wings extra crispy."  RoboSam claims misunderstanding, but that's pretty hard to get wrong and Balthy's not buying it.  He is interested when RoboSam asks advice for keeping a soul out forever.  He guesses Sam's soul is still in hell and agrees RoboSam shouldn't want it back.  Suspiciously, he chooses to help out.  "You seem like a capable young man.  I'd love to have you in my debt.  And I have to say that I'm not a fan of your brother's so screwing him would delight me."  Balthy knows a spell.  I wonder about that.  And Balthy goes from smart, devil-may-care Playangel to sinister dark dealer in my eyes.  I liked you better last time, Balthy.  The spell requires an act to scar the vessel "that so pollutes it, it renders it uninhabitable."  Coincidentally, that means patricide.  In Harry Potter it was murder of any kind.  Since John's dead, any father figure will do.  Just fabulous!  I guess RoboSam's lucky it wasn't matricide; there's no females left.

Tessa warns Dean that people have questions.  "Like how did Betty White outlast me?"  Not quite.  They walk in on a robbery and the robber gets shot.  Tessa tells Dean to touch him, but Dean likes his agonizing pain.  I do not.  The robber wants to know why he's dead and Dean snarks "mostly because you're a d**k."  Next comes heart attack guy and Dean says "You think maybe it was the extra cheese?"  The guy agrees and they talk pizza.  Still, the guy wants to know what "it all means", and all Dean has is Kansas' most overrated song.  I'd be ticked too if that was the answer.  Tessa:  "Sorry, he's new."  Bwah!  However, things get unfunny fast as we cut to a hospital.  A 12-year-old girl is next and we all know Dean's reaction.  It doesn't help that the dad will be family-less and the girl is Ben's age.  Tessa and Dean argue about fate and who creates the list.  "There's no such thing as destiny just like there was no Apocalypse."  If you're talking about that mess that was supposed to be the big event last season, then I totally agree Dean.  Who knew the Apocalypse would be so lame!  Tessa calls "bull" citing all the times Dean and Sam have messed with death, but Dean retorts, "Well I know this much.  I'm Death, she's 12, and she's not dying today."  Apparently, this means the girl gets a free pass since the doctor says her heart has miraculously healed itself.  Add another thing to the Things That Confuse Me list.  The nurse happy though as she walks through Tess; she gets to go home early.

This episode's editing is weird; I don't get the 10-second clips of RoboSam and Bobby interspersed with Dean scenes.  RoboSam contemplates patricide while drinking and playing poker with Bobby.  Souls may not be dice-able, but you could serve the tension in this scene on a plate.  Bobby goes for beer; RoboSam goes for a wrench.  Bobby's quicker though and smashes him upside the head with a club he keeps in the fridge.  "I might have been born at night boy, but it wasn't last night."

Bobby goes to tie RoboSam up but he disappears.  I first rolled my eyes when Bobby looks for RoboSam instead of immediately leaving, but he didn't know about the deal.  Then I rolled my eyes because he locks himself in a closet which RoboSam takes out with an axe.  "Don't say here's Johnny."  But Bobby has a booby trapped floor.  I should know not to question Bobby.  RoboSam drops to the basement and tries to take out the door but it's reinforced.  Bobby rocks but he wants to know what's up.  RoboSam doesn't want to kill Bobby since he's always been good to him but the spell comes first.  Love this delivery!  He knows Dean will kill him to get Sammy back.  I concur.  He can't take that chance.  RoboSam goes silent and Bobby opens the door to check it out.  I will not question Bobby.  "Ain't nobody killing me in my house but me."  It's supposed to be poignant but I'm laughing since it sounds like Fiona in Burn Notice saying, "Dammit Michael. I am not letting some psycho be the first person to bring explosives into my new place."  Fiona and Bobby would get along well.  Music of Bobby's creepy basement swells and I grab my pillow.  There's blood on the panic room handle.

Not fair!  We cut to the hospital.  This editing drives me crazy.  Previous nurse is in a car crash, a domino from Dean not killing the girl.  (Note - never drive when "Bad Moon Rising" is on; always be careful when you get off early.)  Tessa says take her but Dean protests she's not on the list.  No Mercy Tessa tells Dean to "do your damn job."  Dean does and the hospital gives up immediately.  What's up with that?  She flat lines 3 seconds and you call time of death.  What a crummy hospital!  Ouch!  Tessa doesn't pull punches.  She tells the nurse she should have lived for decades and have grandchildren but Dean screwed up.  Dean apologizes but it's too late.  Apparently the town's police are on the ball though because the nurse's husband comes in seconds later.  Wooby Dean can't stand his grief.  Tessa demands Dean kill the girl because her life disrupts the natural order.  "Chaos and sadness will follow her for the rest of her life."  Umm, why?  I don't get this reasoning.  Dean sees nurse's husband at a bar and tells Tessa to wait.

Back at Bobby's Fun House, Bobby follows RoboSam's trail of blood.  He knows RoboSam wants to kill him but he keeps going.  I will not question Bobby….I should have questioned Bobby.  RoboSam takes Bobby down with a pipe in an obvious trap.  This is going nowhere good.  But we can't find out because we are back with Dean.  Nurse's husband tries to kill himself in an accident.  Dean's Death routine allows him to go along for the ride but he can't do anything as Death.  To assuage his guilt and save the man, Dean takes off the ring, grabs the steering wheel, and avoids a bus wreck.  Dean is ticked at himself and rails to Tessa.  He wants zapped home since "Sam is screwed."  Dean for reasons I don't get puts the ring back on and Tessa shows.  He has unfinished business and I learn not to question Dean too.  "No one really skates by do they?"  Aww Dean, my heart breaks when you feel hopeless.  The girl watches her death and Dean kneels down to try to explain (love it).  They agree that natural order sucks and I feel for everyone.  OK, moment's over -call me heartless but my concern's for Bobby.

In Bobby's creepy basement, Bobby is tied up.  He appeals to Sammy, but Creepy RoboSam is in full-control tonight.  RoboSam sharpened the knife and starts to plunge it into Bobby's heart.  The knife goes down and Hallelujah!  There will be no stabbing today!  Dean:  "Hi Sam.  I'm back."  Punch!  RoboSam is down.  Gotta say one thing for Tessa.  She has impeccable timing.  I like "Now you don't see him, now you do" Dean.

Bobby and Dean handcuff Sam in the panic room.  Dean:  "Can't keep doing this Bobby.  I mean what?  Am I going to tie him up every time he tries to kill someone? And that's not going to hold him.  I mean he's.."  Bobby:  "Capable of anything."  Dean doesn't know what to do and I feel worse for him as the show goes on.  He watches RoboSam wake up and the two look at each other as the tension grows.  RoboSam sees something in Dean's eyes, but Dean closes the view space.

Because Dean's day isn't bad enough, Death drops by with hotdogs.  I guess Las Vegas has good bacon dogs.  "What's with you and cheap food?"  Dean, the pot's calling you a hypocrite.  Death wants "a treat" before putting the ring on.  Again with the ring.  Why put it back on?  He did well enough without it.  Plus, he had pizza last year with the ring on and it didn't interfere with his meal.  I say head to Mordor, toss the ring into Mount Doom and be done with it.  Dean takes the ring out of his pocket.  Death:  "Heavier than it looks, isn't it?  Sometimes you just want to get that thing off."  Dean admits failure.  "I sucked at being you.  I screwed up the whole natural order thing."  Death:  "So if you could go back, would you simply kill the little girl?  No fuss.  No stomping your feet."  Dean says yes and Death is surprised but happy.  I am surprised but not happy.  Dean looks like a chastised school boy as Death goes into lecture mode, and I wonder if he's  training Dean as his apprentice.  Ooo, Tessa will be ticked.  Every time Dean and Sam mess with life's balance, Death cleans up and he's tired of playing maid.  Death channels his inner Dumbledore:  "This is hard for you Dean.  You throw away your life because you've come to assume that it will bounce right back into your lap.  The human soul is not a rubber ball.  It's vulnerable, impermanent, but stronger than you know, and more valuable than you can imagine.  So I think you've learned something today."  And Dean's back - he calls Death out for rigging the game.  But Death isn't just anybody and Dean quickly backs off.  Good thing because Death will get Sam's soul.  Dean questions why but Death is vague.  "I wouldn't do it for you.  You and your brother keep coming back.  You're an affront to the balance of the universe and you cause disruption on a global scale."  Dean:  "I apologize for that."  Bwah!  Sometimes it's fun watching humble Dean.  Death wants the Winchesters to keep digging at this soul business.  Dean's useful now.  "You'll understand when you need to."  Great!  How's now!

Death rings out and Dean flies to the panic room.  RoboSam freaks out as Death has his soul in a doctor's bag.  By the light of Sam's soul, Death explains that it's better not to scratch an itch.  RoboSam pleads but Death goes forward.  We fade out to RoboSam's screams.  Goodbye, RoboSam.  I really enjoyed you this season.

I leave the winter finale puzzled but not on tenterhooks for what happens next.  Sam will be fine so I feel no tension there.  The soul issue is too mysterious so I'm more ambivalent about it.  The Alphas weren't mentioned.  Bobby's out of danger.  I don't feel cliffhangered and I'm more surprised by that than the rest of this episode.

Next week - The Vampire Diaries marathon.  Come on, CW.  The hellatus is bad enough.

Screencaps by rawr_caps and Kaidi.  My recaps here.

  1. And we enter the winter hellatus.

I liked this episode, especially the conflict between Dean's desires and RoboSam's desires and how each were firmly convinced that they were right. I loved how Bobby knew what RoboSam was going to do before he did it and I think Bobby's house is the most impressive domicile bar none. I love Bobby! However the winner of the episode for me was Death. He was creepy and cool and eerily calm. I'm glad he's not the big bad because his character is perfect the way it is.

Balthy was a bit of a letdown this time. He wasn't fun. Also, I did not like that Sam's soul is back. It left me going into the hiatus kind of flat. I have no real tension, no big Kripke moment, nothing that I am frustrated with. See - that right there proves that I am a true SPN fan because I am complaining that I am not frustrated. I will also miss RoboSam, as he has become my favorite Sam.

On the plus side, the soul mytharc is intriguing and I can't wait to see where it goes although it is very vague right now. Also, I just know that the Alphas are tied in somewhere as is the war in heaven. Here's hoping for a quick hellatus and a continuation of this season's superior plot in the new year.

What did you think of the episode? Are you happy Sam's been re-souled? Are you satisfied with the mytharc?

  2. 'See - that right there proves that I am a true SPN fan because I am complaining that I am not frustrated.'

Lol Dahne too true.....the day we fans stop complaining they might as well wrap the series right then and there......

  3. I liked the episode - not super duper awesomely amazing, but another solid outing. The tension was high and I liked determined!Sam.

There were some parts I didn't like - Bobby going into the basement( though it sort of had to happen), The little girl dying, and a few other irks.

The theme of this episode was definitely determination. It showed the ways they were willing to go to meet their goals, and they would stop at nothing. Sam's brutal rage was a frightening site to behold, and Dean showed his guts by talking to Death.

As always, a fantastic recap. Thanks!

  4. Totally agree on Death. There is nothing scarier than some one that is so calm and unemotional with power. Psycho crazy , amped up, in your face types that taunt or brag or boast... they are tools, but death can kill with a touch an basically yawns his way thru life. SCARY AS HELL!
I don't know what to make of the soul mytharc... I need more details about it until I can decide if it will be something good or bad. Soulless Sammy will be missed! He is the most fun Sam has been the entire series... by far! I have hopes his soul won't take and we have soulless Sam for another story arc or two.

  5. My favorite quote from the epsiode:
Death: You're an affront to the balance of the universe and you cause disruption on a global scale."
    Dean: "I apologize for that."
See, if he's such an 'affront........blah, blah....' why hasn't Death done something about him before now?
Death wants the boys to keep digging - 'you'll understand when you need to' - Death what are you up to?

  7. -_- VD Marathon... I'll make my own SPN marathon THANKSCW :P (angry)

Agree about the end.. I hope they know that it's not a big question if sammy is gonna be fine or not... and they gave us a preview we arnt THAT dumb LOL. ANY way STUDY back in 8 days to read this. gonna need 100000 reviews and fanfics to get through the wait :( (first one ever)

  8. And I was WRONG......Sam was so gonna hurt Bobby.......I hate being wrong.
Sam, that was just plain wicked......
*jillyanne waves her finger right under Sam's nose*
I would've gone after you myself Sam if Dean hadn't appeared when he did.......

  9. Lol, I was confused to why Dean wanted to do the job and kill the little girl in the end... Death is gonna do it. Maybe this means you can leave without sammy now lol, wont go and save him again after this once.... I dont know weird moment

  10. So this was a pretty awesome episode, I'll have to watch it again later. I love the actor for Death, hes creepy but not Grandpa Creepy and I want him to be around more. Well I guess he's always around but you know what I mean :P. I don't really see why Dean is so attached to Adam..sure its his brother but he never knew him at all. I would assume that Death doesn't need the ring but if he's still around unlike some of the other horseman why didn't he just go and get the ring? I like Tessa, I'm glad she was back.

Dean's meaning of life cracks me up! Also his asking where the pizza was from. The little girl thing was sad...Though when I saw the nurse walk through Tessa I thought she's def going to die. I think Dean enjoyed being about to move around like Cas does what with all the vanishing. It annoys me slightly though that whenever Cas does disappear they start looking around like they are going to see him...I know Misha is just off camera but really it's been a while no need to look around.

It was interesting to see Death sending Dean on his next quest. It's kind of cool that Dean and Death are sitting and eating food like old friends. I guess Death doesn't really get to 'hang out' with people much considering he's only around when they die. No cliffhanger was a surprise since it's pretty obvious that Sam isn't going to turn into a vegetable or the next 11 episodes wouldnt be too much fun. Preview kind of sucked too but we'll get a better one in Jan I suppose. I too will miss RoboSam but I also want to see PuppyDogEyeSam make a reappearance :P.

  11. My first wait too! I started watching Season 1 in February of this year and finished Season 5 in August. My life will never be the same, in a good way :D

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't know Rabia.......I think Sam will be very p****d off with Dean......can't see the puppydogeyes showing up any time soon.
But I could be wrong....because I was wrong about Sam's willingness to hurt Bobby....still furious about that.......

    ReplyDelete
  13. I loved this episode, and I can't wait to get the old Sam back. I mean I love Robo!Sam (he's both hilarious and scary), but I love the dynamic between the two brothers more.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I love your recaps Dahne -

'Presumably it holds Death's power to kill people but if Dean has had the ring for over a year, he obviously doesn't need it. '

Duh! I hadn't even thought about that till you brought it up....... Death keeps the ring so he can take a vacation now and then....find some poor sucker (Dean this time) to stand in while he takes off to Hawaii for the day......and eats junk food.....wonder if he goes swimming?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why do you think that Sam will be pissed off with Dean. This Sam will be grateful to be back and since hell memories are being blocked I am thinking he will be normal for a while. I bet Dean wishes he could block his memories of hell.

Oh Rabia, I think Dean asked for Adam, because Adam is his brother too, even if they didn't grow up together. He is still family that he cares about and doesn't want trapped in the cage with Lucifer and Michael. I don't blame him for asking for Adam, in fact I was glad he did.

    ReplyDelete
  16. He'll still remember he didn't want his soul back though, and that Dean had it forcibly put back......last season he told Dean he wanted to be treated like an adult, and Dean agreed to do that, but once again Dean still knows what's best for Sam and acts on that (whether he's right or wrong) so yeah, I can see Sam being p****d off

    ReplyDelete
  17. I personally think the finale left us with a lot to wonder about. I feel like Death may come back for some reason (since even though Dean failed @ his job, he still gave Sam his soul back) and that something else will come up involving how Sam and Dean keep coming back from the dead and how it may disrupt the natural order. Concerning Sam, I think we still have to see how he will be with his soul back. Is it gonna take him a while 2 adjust and become himself again or is he gonna try 2 get rid of it again or something, since he didnt want it back.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I hadn't thought about the possibility of Sam trying to get rid of his soul again. He just might do that - hell I'd be terrified of that wall breaking down if I was him.....good point mjkchip....more food for thought......

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think initially he will be mad at Dean for not listening to him but maybe once he thinks about what he's done with his soul back he will realize how out of control he has been. I was hoping Sam wouldn't hurt Bobby even if Dean didn't come back but clearly I was wrong since he was about to kill him anyway. Sam kind of reminded me of Ruby, she didn't care about human life, she was on a mission and she needed Sam so she kept him around just like Sam stayed with Dean even though he didn't care about him. I'm glad Sam won't remember hell but he will still have to deal with what RoboSam did.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I doubt it...Sam has become a mature person and I think he'll be able to cope with it. Personally IMO all of us have gotten too used to RoboSam and forget what the old Sam was like. Though I'm sort of trying to just reassure myself here. It's time to get Sam back for good! :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I hope so too. But as Rabia said - it may take some time for Sam to readjust to having his soul back - unless somehow Death made him forget what it was like to have no soul. Which is unlikely.
So Sam's gonna be feeling again.......number one feeling? Probably guilt - the innocents he killed in the line of duty, trying to kill Bobby - the old Sam would tie himself in knots over stuff like that, and I'm guessing Sam minus hell memories must surely equal old Sam?
I think it will be ok as long as the writers don't dwell too long on it. Have your feelings Sam. Then move on..... don't wallow.......please........

    ReplyDelete
  22. I really hope they don't go there. I'd expect him to have a reaction to remembering the experience, but if he remembers being RoboSam, he's got to remember attacking Bobby, letting Dean turn, and lord knows what else he was plotting. Sam didn't want to be a monster, and that thing was getting pretty damn close to being a monster. On the plus side, we might finally find out what RoboSam was up to, if Soul Sam remembers it and talks.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Either way it'll be an interesting ride........I just hope they deal with it and move on....
I think they will - they've got to get busy and 'keep digging at this soul business' and 'you'll understand when you need to'.
So. Plenty to keep them occupied in the second half of the season without spending vast quantities of time watching Sam angst out......

    ReplyDelete
  24. Call me crazy, but Death isn't a warm fuzzy kinda guy.
So why'd he give Sam his soul back? Dean lost .....he took the ring off - he 'sucked at being you'....... but Death still delivers on Sam's soul. He could have just sent Dean off to do the 'soul digging' thing while Sam languished in Bobby's panic room.....So why, Death? Why?

And as for Balthazar - I'm taking bets on who'll have the pleasure of ganking him.
Will it be the feathery-assed-pretty-boy-angel? Sam? Dean? Raphael? Maybe Bobby would like a turn? Hey Meg's still out there somewhere? Cause I'm sorry all you Seb Roche fans out there, but Balthy's really, really annoying. So he's got to go. After we find out why he's buying human souls of course.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You know what's funny?
This recap annoys me almost as much as this episode did.
And yet of course I enjoyed both.
    Quite a conundrum, no?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Good point. If we stop complaining, it's a sign we've stopped caring. So complaining's a good thing?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm pretty sure RoboSam is gone for good. The majority of fans have spoken against him in the long-term. I just hope he isn't replaced by guilt-ridden, angst-filled, brooding Sam. That Sam tries my patience even though I mentally understand why he is like that.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree - it was a B/B- episode for me. I was shocked when Dean went back and killed the girl, but I like how he didn't try to sugarcoat how much it sucked to her. Kids can tell when you are disingenuous with them and Dean always seems to know how to talk to kids. It's one of the things I like best about this character.

When Bobby went into the basement, all I could think of was Asylum when Dean tells Kat that when someone says a place is haunted don't go in. It had classic horror flick written all over it. He really should have gotten out of Dodge as soon as he knew RoboSam was after him because of a spell.

  29. I think it was Dean cleaning up his own mess no matter how much he hated it. He realized that he couldn't cheat death even when he was Death and that gave him a better perspective of the ying-yang philosophy they are emphasizing this year. He didn't want to do it, but he wasn't willing to have other people die because of his decisions.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Just my thoughts here, but I think that one reason is that Death's ying-yang is God and God wanted them alive. I envision Death and God sitting for coffee and given Death's taste in food, probably doughnuts. Death is constantly asking God why he is protecting these two.

Of course, this time they are on a mission from Death. There has to be a major reveal about souls in the works because everyone, except RoboSam, wants them this year, even Death. I don't understand why Death is so cryptic though. If he knows what is going on, wouldn't it behoove him to let his employees in on the details. They would sure get what he wants faster.

  31. I'm going to watch Supernatural on Friday just like I normally do. Only this time it will be through iTunes which is vastly superior to the CW anyway. I am going to watch my favorite episodes and make it my own holiday marathon.

  32. I'm glad you found the show. We have an impassioned fan base and are quite vocal. I'm glad you are sharing your opinions with us. Once the Winchesters get in your life, it's hard to remember a time before them. They are addicting.

  33. I think Dean is attached to Adam because of family obligation and not true affection or connection. That's why it was such an easy decision to pick Sam over Adam. It's more like it is his duty as the older brother to at least inquire about that other Winchester when he can.

  34. I don't think Sam is going to be mad at Dean. He will realize that he was not himself and therefore was not capable of making Sam-decisions. This isn't about Dean not treating him like an adult. It's more like Sam suffered major head trauma and Dean was working him through it. I do expect there to be consequences from this though. Regardless of whether Sam remembers hell, he will want to know what he did when he wasn't him. Being Sam, he won't be able to leave it alone and he is going to feel remorse for those innocents that got hurt. My biggest concern is that Dean will lie to Sam to spare his feelings and Sam will explode when he finds out the truth. He will have every right to be ticked if this happens.

  35. I'm giving them one truly angsty, emotional overload episode and then I expect them to get back to work. I know most fans live for the emo melodrama, but I'd rather they internalize it and move on. Is that healthy? Of course not. But for me, it makes for more entertaining TV.

  36. i don't think sam will pissed off at dean..., sam with soul will said to dean..., at that time dean should kill him not let him hurt other or kill innocence people (but we know dean would not doing that).., so he will thank to dean for bring his soul back.., robosam dont want his soul back because all his brain cell think having a soul it's suffer..., n his instinct said he have to try to survive..., O_~

no matter what happen, no mater how hurt when the wall going down some day soulful sam would never blame dean for everything..., ^_~

  37. For me it depends on which Sam returns. I'm hoping it is an older, wiser Sam who takes the best traits of RoboSam but combines them with Sam's empathy. I'm pretty sure that is wishful thinking though. I know that episode 6.12 is about a dragon taking virgins, but I think the title Like a Virgin refers to Sam's situation even more. Like when Dean said he was re-hymenated in Monster Movie, Sam has been re-souled. My guess is that in some ways he will have to find new ways to navigate old situations. Similar to a person after a stroke having to relearn to do basic things.

  38. Not sure, but I think Death in a swimsuit would be scarier than Death in the suit. He's really pale and angular. :-)

I hope the ring doesn't become a bad mytharc later on. Someone steals Death's magic ring and he needs the Winchesters to get it back. They follow a trail of mysterious deaths to find the culprit. Something that powerful should be destroyed if the one who owns it doesn't really need it. Have we learned nothing from classic fantasy novels?

  39. Death's return is assured. After all, the Winchesters are practically working for him now. Plus, they owe him big time. About Sam, it was RoboSam who did not want a soul, not Sammy. Pre-hell Sam will be horrified to learn what RoboSam did that year. I can't imagine Sam not wanting his soul no matter how bad it gets. He would be more likely to kill himself than remove his soul again and becoming that person so far removed from his true self. Neither Winchester deals well with innocents dying because of them.

  40. Yes! No wallowing. Accept that it was not you and move on. After all, no one blamed Dean for what Shapeshifter Dean did in St. Louis. Well, except the cops.

I think Sam will have the hardest time with almost killing Bobby but also letting Dean get turned into a vampire. That's betrayal at the coldest in the Winchester world.

  41. I think Death is confined by his own rules. He knows that the plan afoot is going to cause major chaos (unbalance) that he will be expected to clean up. However, Death doesn't seem to like directly interfering; he's more a directing people in the background kind of guy. He didn't raise an army to thwart Lucifer; he gave Dean his ring so Dean could stop him. Maybe Death wants the Winchesters to screw the big bad's plans before he has to do something drastic. The Winchesters have already shown that they are experts at throwing monkey wrenches in evil's plans.

  42. I'm very ambivalent about this episode, I wondered about a lot of the same things plus why does Balthy dislike Dean so much, did I miss something? I agree that the editing was making me dizzy and the stuff with the little girl was very heavy handed, push Deans most basic protective instinct and then force him to "see the error of his ways" to teach him a lesson, I'm amazed it didnt somehow involve Lisa or Ben.

I love Death he is creepy, he loves junk food, he doesnt let any of Deans snarky comments or gestures pass "Dont roll your eyes Dean, its impolite" I just love that Death chastized him like a parent would.

I'm going to miss RoboSam too, he was funnier and scarier this season then he has ever been and since Dean is a lot less ruthless then he used to be EmoSam isn't needed as much to soften his edges. I loved how Sam referred to his soul as "the other guy" as if they were two separate entities, and in a way I guess they are. RoboSam knows he wont be the same once he is re-souled and its a lot easier to not have to worry about those pesky feelings and emotions not only yours but other peoples as well. I think he is going to be royally pissed at Dean for forcing this on him, since he will know that this was much more about what Dean needed then what Sam needed or wanted, but I do think he will feel bad about some of things he did, letting Dean get turned, almost killing Bobby, plus he alluded to doing a lot of things Dean wouldnt have liked in the year they were apart, so he will accept that he needs to have a soul.

I'm really looking forward to see how the "souls are more important then you know" story line plays out. I'm mean whatever it is can be a new thing, why all of a sudden have souls become a commodity? and what do they have to do with Purgatory (or are they abandoning that story line).

  43. All I want for Christmas is to know how Death got Sam's soul from the cage. Aside from the obvious 'he can'.

  44. I was mad at the end of this episode, as the biggest Samgirl ever I have wanted his soul back for six months now. I mean yeah Robo Sams fine but he's not a patch on real Sam, real Sam's the one us Sam girls adore and need back, however it really angers me that the writers do this wall idea rather than deal with a messed up Sam. Us Sam fans have therefore had to wait for months and months, half the season to get our boy back, the only thing keeping us going the idea of massively screwed up Sam upon the return and lots of angst and drama and what the writers decide they can't be bothered to deal with it right now so lets make up some wall idea till we decide to address it if ever. NO LOVE AT ALL writers. I thought Sera was supposed to be a Sam girl. Yeah not getting that this season.

Whatever, happy to have my boy back finally not happy at the ignoring of his issues yet again. Cheers for that writers.

I do wonder however if they're going to have Sam and Dean be all BFF again and have a great relationship once more, lull us into that false sense of security and then WHAM take Sam's wall down. Masochists.

Will also be interested to see if Sam sleeps forever I mean his physical body hasn't slept for over a year, surely he's going to be wrecked on that front at least.

Also kudos to Padalecki he has been incredible showing a totally different side to his acting with Robo Sam, rip Robo Sam.

  45. indeed. After all one guilt-ridden, angst-filled, brooding Winchester bro is more than enough. I think Dean's bringing enough emo-bitch for a thousand Winchesters this season.

BTW I'm a Sam-girl and I loved Robo-Sam, he was bad-ass and totally funny. He may have been the one story element I don't have a problem with this season (so far) he kept me entertained and on the edge. I don't think Sam will go back to pre-cage Sam now he has his soul back but he obviously wont be Robo-Sam either. TV GUIDE alluded to a different Sam for the second half of the season (that's the impression I got anyway). I wouldn't mind a Sam who was more a mix of Sammy and Robo-Sam. He should have Robo's bad-assery and humour and mostly his no bullcrap attitude (especially when dealing with Dean) but he should also have the empathy, humanity and puppy-dogedness of Sammy. One of the things I really liked about Robo-Sam was that he wasn't just 'Dean's little brother Sammy' he was his own person albeit a soulless, psychopath who wasn't really Sam but still he was out there living a life? So yeah somewhere in the middle would be nice.

Also I want there to be an emotional fall out for Sam not just a white wash of everything he's been through and I want it to be in regards to hell not what Robo-Sam did because I don't want Sammy to have to feel guilty for things he had no control over, after all the writers seem to have been alluding to the issue in regards to Sammy and Robo-Sam being two separate entities?

  46. I loved the episode. At one point I feared that Dean was going to have to "kill" Bobby and that would be what prompts him to take his ring off. So glad that Sam didn't get the chance to stab Bobby!
Then I thought that Dean was going to have to kill Sam...after all he had turned into a killer. Nothing else he could do at this point. So glad I was wrong! Death saves the Day! Never thought I'd say that...again!

Looking forward to seeing what Sam is like now with his Soul back, but with the memories of the things that Lucifer showed to him before he jumped in the hole.
Can't wait to find out more about this soul business. I hope it's interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  47. It would be great to have that Sam back, yes, but I'm really fine with any kind of Sam, as long as it's SAM :D I've missed all versions of him, so I don't care if he's gonna be the 'angsty' Sam or whatever xD
I'm just so happy he's back!

    ReplyDelete
  48. And wouldn´t that be ironic?

After all the lying Sam did to Dean (RoboSam or not) it is Dean´s turn. And the wheel turns around and around...

Like, it made me smile that Team-free-will seems to have no free will considering their empoyee status this year. They went from working for a demon straight to working for Death. Bet, by now, they miss to be freelancer.

    ReplyDelete
  49. :-) I guess it's time to rename them Team Not Free. You know if they are going to be working for everyone else, they should start negotiating for a paycheck and health benefits. Although Death may not be a fan of Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think working for Death renders any questions of health benefits useless.

But for all the family members/friends burning on the ceiling, being thrown against cupboards and wall countless times, going to hell and so on, our boys sure earned a big christmas bonus!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I really don't know why. I guess there was some difference of opinion sprinkled in there or something.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Wow... I couldn't disagree more...For the hell Sam went through, he'd be MORE than just depressed/sad/angsty, he'd be an effing vegetable or something in that respect! Death merely filtered most of the anguish behind a mental barrier so that Sam could come back as a functioning individual. That way, not only do they show that Hell has its consequences when boarding up with Luci and Mike, but you get your damn Sam back with just enough angst to keep things interesting. I really just hate it when people bitch about things they made up in their own head...

And it's not about comparing screen time......
    or who's the better actor....
    or.........
This is starting to read like a complaint in itself - I'll shut up now.....
