When the anime project was originated, it was announced that while Dean and Sam's character sketches would look similar to Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, other characters as well as supernatural monsters would be re-imagined. Jessica Moore has become a redhead, John Winchester has become more grizzled, and Mary Winchester reminds me more of the actress than the character. However, the two characters that have departed from their actors the most seem to be Bobby Singer and Missouri Moseley. Bobby looks to be a bookie moreso than a hunter and Missouri has a bit of Whoopi Goldberg inspiration going on. I'm all for re-imagining the characters, but it's going to take me some time to become accustomed to these new versions.

The first eight episode summaries have been released, and while they start out in direct parallel to the episodes we've seen before, they soon go off in their own direction. With the freedom that anime gives the story, episodes are not going to be strictly a word for word recreation of the series. Instead, new creatures will be encountered and cases will be covered from both current times and the past.
1.01: “Skin” - A demonic shape-shifter commits a gruesome murder. When the brothers investigate, the being borrows Dean's form to continue its killing spree.
1.02: “Roadkill” - The highway's the only haunted once a year and we got 'til sunup to wrap things up!" Sam, Dean and a near-victim race the earth’s rotation to vanquish a ghost who kills on the anniversary of his death.
1.03: “Home” - After 22 years, Sam and Dean return to their childhood home. Now another beautiful young mother lives there - and, if Sam's nightmares are correct, she may be threatened by the same evil that killed Mary Winchester.
1.04: “Blood of Beast” - Sam and Dean help out a young boy, who is being bullied by the older kids at school. We discover that the boy's father is actually a "peaceful" vampire who has sworn not to attack humans and survived by drinking cattle blood. The boy also has vampire blood in him but he is just not yet aware of his true nature.
1.05: “Ghost on the Highway” - Sam and Dean are driving along the highway and are suddenly chased by a cop car from behind. They discover that there have been numerous unexplainable car accidents in the area. All accident involved a Chevy Impala. Sam and Dean have to investigate to prove themselves innocent. We discover that an evil spirit has taken the form of an Impala is trying to take revenge on the town.
1.06: “Bloody Mary” - Back in 2004, when Sam was studying at Stanford. Sam hears about a suspicious death case occurred in Stanford from Jessica, a girl he's becoming friendly with. John and Dean smell something evil in the case and start investigating behind Sam's college life. They first presume that it is caused by a ghost called "Bloody Mary" but it turns out to be caused by a different ghost.
1.07: “ Temptation of Demon” - Maria, a faithful Christian is lured by a yellow-eyed demon to become its servant in return of curing her sick daughter. She refuses at first, but is quickly drawn in.
1.08: “ Everlasting Love” - Multiple homicides in Illinois. The victims are all blond women in their 20s and the crimes scenes leave traces of formaldehyde. Sam and Dean discover fingerprints of a female who died in 1940. A tragic love story of a mad doctor.
And if that weren't enough treats, we recently got a full preview highlighted by a version of “Carry On My Wayward Son”, which every Supernatural fan knows is the unofficial theme song of the series. The promo also allows us to hear how Hiroki Touchi (Dean) and Yuya Uchida (Sam) deal with the dialogue. From my perspective, I'd say they're doing a fantastic job. And each time I re-watch the video, it makes me wish the release was even sooner. I'm excited for the Supernatural anime, how about you?

Wow! I wish I understood Japanese! It looks pretty awesome. Needs some subtitles.
ReplyDeleteJust can`t wait!!! I was a big sceptic first, but all information and the preview are sooooo promissing!!! bring it!!!
ReplyDeleteJensen and Jared, as a special feature, will be dubbing a couple of the episodes (I'm guessing off the first volume). With the popularity, though, even if it's released solely in Japan at first I'm sure it will get imported.
ReplyDeleteI am in love with that preview. It gets me jazzed up every time I see it!
ReplyDeleteThis is beyond awesome (if it makes sense....) Gosh I could watch it in japonese or is it chinese? NAY WAY lol. And I'm I the only one who reconized jensen's voice in the begining? r im crazy lol.
ReplyDeleteSam looks more like jared then dean like jensen any way
and BOBBY? wtf? I dont care that they change the look but he looks mean
The voice actors for the anime are the same ones who dub the live action show in Japan, so they've got a great handle on the characters already.
ReplyDeletebut J2 said they would do some of the voices in the first couple of eps
ReplyDeleteUgh. I'm not so fond of those character/plot re-imaginings. It will definitely take some getting used to, although I don't really know what I was expecting in terms of episodes. I guess I thought they would just be doing the show in anime form, but it makes sense that they want to create original material/plotlines.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind most of the "re-imaginings" but Bobby just doesn't look right to me. Missouri wasn't enough of a character for it to really effect me seeing as she was only in one episode but Bobby has become a fairly major character.
ReplyDeleteI'll definitely watch and love it though but it'll be more like a little fun thing on the side rather than seeing it as actual canon.
They are dubbing for the special features.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited that they can expand exploration to storylines while the boys were younger. I've always been fascinated with that time period.
ReplyDeleteIt's a new kind of canon I guess :) But definitely fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm sooo excited!!! :D I wish it was April already, I want to watch episode 5 so bad. They did a great job with the Impala and I'm not a fan of the character design but I knew I wouldn't because one of the Trigun people was responsible for it. Trigun is an awesome anime but the design is... below average, to put it nicely. I love a more detailed and cuter style e.g. Clamp.
ReplyDeleteThe character sketches are pretty rough, so I wonder if the will look better in the actual anime. I like Missouri's new look, maybe she plays a bigger role in the anime and I also like Bobby, he has no resemblance with Jim Beaver, but he looks like a good guy or maybe it's just his smirk. ;D Absolutely not in love with the Kansas cover, sorry but it makes my ears bleed, I hope it's not the opening song. BTW I wonder if they will give Supernatural an opening/ending them or go with a simple title card.
I'm definitely excited for the anime! It's been growing on me ever since it was announced and with the preview trailer my excitement just shot up :D
ReplyDeletereally LOL! Then the japan guy is very good haaha
ReplyDeleteWet blanket here - love Supernatural beyond anything - but cannot get into anime at all.
ReplyDelete*runs and hides*
Sorry.
I truly do not like the way John, Mary, Jessica, Bobby or Missouri look...x_x Bobby looks like somebody in the mob. John looks more like Bobby should look. Mary? She just doesn't even resemble Mary and why make Jessica a redhead? I mean seriously? C'mon. Jess was a blonde and I think that holds purpose. Jess also had curly hair. I dunno. Sam and Dean look fine and I'm really excited about this coming out, but they're making our beloved characters just not look right at all. I'm also excited to see new stories! It's great we're getting to see an anime rehash of some of our older, beloved favorites, but new stories are going to be really cool. I'm looking forward to this. :)
ReplyDeleteHey, it's not going to be for everyone :) But I love that they're trying to expand the market in new and interesting ways.
ReplyDeleteThe character sketches will definitely take some time to get accustomed to, but the potential for expanded stories is exciting!
ReplyDeleteOh I agree absolutely - the more exposure the better.
ReplyDeleteok they just ruined bobby, i was head strong for this sereis now, why cant people learn that the reason a sereis is a success is becuse of the way it is already! I hope they dont change bobbys character he is a great character and the sereis would not be the same without him!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the anime!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt will be intriguing to see what they explore and what new stories could be developed.
ReplyDeleteExcitement!
ReplyDeleteIt's not Chinese, it's Japanese. :)
ReplyDeleteWe are SUPER excited for this!!! In fact: That's why we made our site to count down the days! Right now we just have a free forum (samslaptop.com), a facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sams-Laptop/144130382304059) and a twitter (@SamsLaptop) but we're trying to build! So anyone else who can't wait to see our boys in all their animated glory, please feel free to join us! No, really, join us...we're lonely. :)
ReplyDeleteExcitement abounds!
ReplyDeletegood lol that was my first guess hhehe
ReplyDeleteI DON'T understand Japanese either but I'am glad that Supernatural is going animation and if I can buy it here I will...just to see Sam and Dean in their cartoon form. I wonder though what will come first though the animation series or Sam getting his soul back in the States ?
ReplyDeleteOMG! I just realized that I think the Missourri cartoon looks like my fave Whoopi Goldberg...cool., because she is a fan of Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteIf we're taking bets? Umm....soul! Though it might be a tight race :)
ReplyDeleteShe's definitely reminds me of Whoopi Golberg.
ReplyDelete:P
ReplyDeleteThink of it this way - perhaps the more markets and merchandising they cover, the more likely we will get new seasons.
ReplyDeletePerhaps it's a cultural thing for Japan since they are making it for Japanese viewers and not so much for us.
ReplyDeleteI love that Supernatural is expanding and although anime is not my first love, I will support this however I can. I'm fine with the characters although Bobby will take some getting used to. I'm fine with the new plots, since that's what the novels do too. What I can't abide is the karaoke Carry on My Wayward Son. If they are going to have it in English, why not pay Kansas to use the original. It sounds like a boy band covering classic rock. Kudos to the guy at the end though. When he says "Supernatural.....The Animation" it's so overdramatic that I start laughing. I love that voice. Way to go Japan for supporting Supernatural in a completely new way. Can't wait until I can see it dubbed in English.
ReplyDeleteThis is such an interesting project. I'm very excited to see how it all plays out!
ReplyDeleteI might enjoy this... it would be nice if they had some back story of the boys when they were younger and growing up. I am sure that it would be cool to meet all the hunters that helped John and see how the boys coped with everything...but only if it is done right and there is some influence of Eric on the scripts I would not want them to mess with cannon and Mythos of the the series the reimagined Mary, Bobby and Jess are a little much...there is a through line that is missed between Jess and Mary when you change there looks. I always thought it was interesting that they looked similiar, even though Sam never really knew Mary and thinks he is nothing like his Dad they are more alike then they thought. Also Sam's eyes being brown I am okay with but I wish they would have made Dean's more like Jensen I think it would have looked better.
ReplyDeleteYou're definitely right about the through line with Mary and Jess. The parallels of looks as well as outcomes was always interesting to me.
ReplyDelete(And I definitely want to see some Wee-chester stories!)
it took me half the video to understand why I couldn't understand what they were saying. LOL I need some sleep!
ReplyDeleteI'm SOOO going to watch it! the best thing about comics is that they can be a lot bloodier than live action without making me sick or laugh out loud. Can't wait! *-*
The freedom of anime to explore ideas that simply cannot be filmed as live action opens many avenues of storytelling. I'm excited!
ReplyDeleteit may be weird, but I have always loved Missouri. She is an amazing character that CW threw away completely. Although she only appeared in one episode, I find her very interesting to explore. ;)
ReplyDeleteYou know I'm going to buy these. KNOW IT! Anyone know what channel they will come on? I'm probably going to catch them on iTunes so I can watch them in batches. /squeee :D
ReplyDeleteCurrently they are schedule for Japanese DVD release, not US. However, that may change later.
ReplyDeleteHear that Nielsen? I'm buying these, but I'm not watching them on TV.
ReplyDeleteI'll be watching online, but not on TV.
Online, Not Offline.
On computer, not on TV.
GET IT?!?!
Get it through your coconut skull.
/drinks coffee
OMG, I love Supernatural and I LOVE THE ANIME---- so SPN in anime version is just AWESOME, can't wait
ReplyDeleteWonderful! :D
ReplyDeleteAs a big fan of the TV series, I'm looking forward to seeing the anime! There's a great post here comparing the two - http://www.mangauk.com/?p=supernatural-versus-supernatural
