Hawaii Five-O - New Series Regular Ahead

Oh, casting carousel, how you constantly spin.

My good friend Kate Stanhope at TV Guide is reporting that a casting call has gone out for a new series regular to join the existing foursome of Alex O'Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park. Kate tells us that "According to the official casting call, the character will be somewhere in his or her late 20s to early 30s, a wise-cracking, multilingual Asia expert recruited into the CIA right out of Harvard. The new addition also has a deep-rooted connection to McGarrett, having taken a bullet for him years ago. And it's still there, lodged next to the spine."

They're looking for the character to debut in the seventeenth episode this season (to give you an idea, episode ten aired last week - the show was in a rerun this week).

I find it kind of amusing that the show isn't out of the first season yet and they're already adding regulars, but for me, it's going to come down to who they cast in the role. The description doesn't move me either way, so I'll be waiting to see who brings it to life and what they do with it before I pass judgment. (My casting suggestion would've been to bring back Max Martini, but obviously that wouldn't work.)

Hopefully, this new regular will see more screen time than Taryn Manning, who's been sitting on the sidelines for the most part since making her much-hyped debut as Steve's sister Mary Ann. Manning hasn't been seen since Mary Ann walked into Steve's girlfriend(?) Cat Rollins (Michelle Borth) a few episodes back.

What do you think? Ready for the Five-O team to literally become five?

UPDATE: Furthermore, TVG says in their weekly spoiler column that "we will meet Chin's ex-fiancee, a beautiful doctor who helps solve one of the team's cases by identifying a dead body. Naturally, the couple has lots of unfinished business, which might be why the good doctor still wears Chin's engagement ring around her neck." So there won't be just one new face coming up...

  1. I would be excited by this except they barely give Kono or Chin anything to do as it is. I could see one or two characters getting shunted to the background if they had a large cast but they don't. I would like to see more Kono and Chin first please.

  2. Im interested!! Hopefully we will see less and less of the sister or for the love of Pete please recast her! The girl playing her looks like a right out mess and has ZERO chemistry with the rest of the cast!! No wonder she has only been seen in like two episodes and that is two episodes to many IMO!!

  3. Maybe if they add another female character, Grace Park's Kono character wouldn't always have to be the bait or the one that gets rescued all the time.

Taryn Manning isn't the only head-scratching character addition. Masi Oka's character was supposed to be recurring too but he's only been in one episode.

  4. I think this is a bad idea. McGarrett already has a partner and buddy. Why bring on this character? At least it's not another "female pretending to be a tough guy" character. Why are they messing with the chemistry that works?

  5. Masi Oka will be appearing in Episode 11 next week as well :)

  6. You add Jason Dohring to the cast and I would be sold on the idea

  7. Well, I found his character, Masi Oka's, quite cringe worthy. Ugh...

  8. This show is THE show for Asian actors it seems...

  9. I didn't enjoy his first episode very much either.

  10. Great. They already don't give Chin and Kono enough to do and now they're adding another character? Plus, this worries me. I love the Steve and Danny relationship, especially the banter. If they screw that up, I'm going to be extremely ticked.

  11. The only person I'm interested in seeing is Alex as Steve. They can take all the others out of the picture, except a love interest of course, and I'd be happy. He can do this show all by himself afaic. Adding another cast member? Why? It's too bloated already.
