Glee: 'A Very Glee Christmas'; The Sue that stole Christmas

Dec 9, 2010

One of my bad habits when I watch a movie I don't like is that I start commentating on the movie - making silly jokes about things people have said, generally making fun of the movie.

And as Finn walked through the Christmas trees while he and Rachel sang Wham's 'Last Christmas' for no apparent reason, I found myself making Marty McFly jokes about what Finn was wearing.

Needless to say, I didn't enjoy 'A Very Glee Christmas' - a rather shameless hour long advert to promote the Christmas album of mostly tedious and uninteresting songs.

It was one of those 'Glee' episodes that we've seen far too much this season - an episode with a million and one ideas that haven't been reigned in or adjusted to make a coherent hour of TV. There were some nice beats, sure - Coach Beiste getting Artie the magic robot walker thing was sweet, and Kurt's exchange with Will about the difference between McKinley and Dalton(*) made sense. And any episode that tries to make Brittany more than just the exceptionally dumb blonde but rather a girl who finds herself defaulting to a happier, easier world (maybe I'm reading too much into this) gets marks in my book.

(*) I like that Dalton isn't completely perfect in Kurt's eyes. At some point, Kurt will return to McKinley and I like that the writers are thinking more about setting these sorts of things up now rather than springing them up on us four episodes down the line. I'm really glad Kurt isn't putting his new school on a pedestal because there's now potential for a more believable transition back to McKinley.

But so much of 'A Very Glee Christmas' was so disjointed and bizarre - Sue dressing up as the Grinch only served a purpose for the audience, only Brittany saw her destroying the tree and even then she thought she was Santa. Why put all that green make-up on if you're going to sneak around the school at night?

Certainly, the two biggest relationships we're supposed to care about took up far too much time in the episode. Rachel and Finn as a couple isn't as interesting as Ryan Murphy thinks it is. The biggest flaw with those two, of course, is that between scenes, Finn goes from happy-go-lucky Christmas spirit guy(**) to miserable girlfriend dumping guy. it goes back to what I was saying about too many ideas in one episode. The two sides of Finn didn't work, so for me, happy-go-lucky Finn felt very forced. There was also never really any reason to break them up other than for the drama of it all - 'Finnchel' were doing fine as a couple (see 'Duet' as a highlight) and I think it's a shame that the writers didn't feel comfortable believing in their creation.

(**) At one point during the episode, in a scene with Happy-Finn, my brother suggested that maybe Finn's determination to have a happy Christmas could be related to the death of his father and that he didn't want to forever associate Christmas with such a sad time. It was a completely out of the blue suggestion, but I couldn't help but think it would have made for a more believable and emotional story had the episode explored the reason for his chipper behaviour (I don't buy that teenagers would just get that excited over Christmas because it's the most magical time of the year).

And with regards to Will and Emma, I'm almost at a loss for words. What was once a rather sweet and innocent crush between two teachers unhappy in their current relationships has turned into something so flaccid, so dull. I feel like watching them stare awkwardly at each other is a chore now, and it shouldn't be that way. I'd normally suggest that they defecate or get off the pot, but at this point I think it's probably too late to redeem this story arc.

But I gotta say, if nothing else, I want to throw some praise on Dot Marie Jones. Coach Beiste has been one of my favourite additions to this second season. While I thought it was a shame that the writers completely insulted Jones as an actress and a person in 'Never Been Kissed', I thought she did some fantastic work here, showing some real sincere compassion that I didn't really feel when we saw Sue's heart grow three times it's size. The problem with Sue is that you know full well she'll go back to being a she-devil the next episode, and so you can only really take her kindness with a pinch of salt. It sucks, because Jane Lynch acts those scenes really well - but the writing does let her down and 32 episodes into 'Glee' the trick doesn't really work on me anymore.

I'm too sleepy for any more big paragraphs (though I have some more I could knock out in all honesty), so a quick hail of bullets.

- I like that Becky has been given a proper role in this show, and not just the role of 'girl with Down's Syndrome'. Sue's sidekick could be played by any hottie with a scowly face, but if anything I actually prefer the sweet but devious character that Lauren Potter has brought to the table. This is the way forward, and I welcome it.

- Has this show forgotten about Mercedes completely? Amber Riley hasn't really had much to do for weeks.

- When Will walked into his house, I dreaded that Terri would be there. That shouldn't be a thing, right? I shouldn't be preparing myself up for having to sit through an awful character being on screen?

- Songs! I really wasn't that bothered by the Christmas songs at all, as I generally find them to be annoying and rather bland. But I don't think good songs would have saved this episode.

- Finally, New Directions appeared on 'The X-Factor' on Sunday night, sans Chris Colfer, and they did 'Don't Stop Believing'. Check it out if you've not seen it, it's good fun.

Overall, I've been disappointed with this half-season. Some strong episodes like 'Furt' shine through but can't make up for this weeks mess or the travesty that was 'Brittany/Britney'. Maybe we'll see a return to form in the spring.

What did everyone else think?

  1. I did not think this was an incoherent or disjointed episode at all honestly.
Sue dressing up n green face as the Grinch was not only an homage to a cherished Christmas icon, but so true to her character itself, Sue rejoices in being a buzz kill and bah humbugging the spirit of others, not only to see her victims feel defeated, but for her own inner self. She is in costume (track suits) for every occasion including her own wedding to herself. Dressing as the Grinch to go on an Christmas rampage is apropos. She does things to amuse herself.
I get the Finn emotional mood swings too. His happy face was just his way of trying to talk himself out of a depressive state. Put on the happy face and fake a joyous Xmas spirit and maybe others won't notice you are depressed... or you won't notice yourself. Then being around Rachel, the source of his bad mood, he could no longer fake the happiness and just went full on downer. Personally, I think there is a myriad of reasons to not date or to break up with Rachel... most stemming from her self-centered, narcissistic and clueless attitude to others in New Directions. was surprised they kept them together as long as they did.
I do agree the Will and Emma part of the Will/Emma/Carl triangle has gotten stale.t could change anytime tho, more than once I have been that way with friends or people i cared about only to find them in my speed dial again for no apparent reason. Relationships (of any kind) of hills and valleys, but this valley is annoyingly boring.
I too have enjoyed Dot this year, but I am not sure they insulted her as a per or as an actress. People (especially women) that look like her have had to deal with ridicule their entire lives and that was the point of Never been kissed. Saying she was insulted for that plot would be like saying they insult Chris Colfer for portraying him as a bullied effeminate gay male. It happens and sometimes you have to highlight it bring it to others attention.
Also i ADORE the evil and malevolent Sue moments. She makes the show for me and those moments of absolute twisted evil are when she is at her best for me. I like the good nature that surfaces time to time. It keeps her a more real, dynamic character, but I love the Sue-devil!
I do agree that this season many of the singers have taken a back seat. With more time being spent on Will/Emma/Carl triangle.. or Will and Terri or Sue and her mom, there just has not been time for all them to get their fair share of face time yet. Partly because of how much time Kurt has received this season. I hope they wrap up the Kurt at Dalton story soooon! it takes away from the rest of the cast and is just dragging down the season. They do seem to be setting it up for the return as you say. I hope they do it quickly. I wish they did not just use Becki as comic relief. I applaud having a recurring role with down syndrome and making her just one of the students. I just wish she got a slightly larger role than just Sue's mini-me assistant. I too amnot a fan of Xmas music, but I think by picking the less popular songs they did it made the episode a bit of a let down musically for me. I don't think the episode needed rescuing since I enjoyed it, but the music was below the rest of the episode for me.

I think you are not alone in not enjoying this season very much. I think this first half of the year is better than last year's second half of the year, but I have liked the 'tribute' episodes A LOT. Maybe I am in the minority. To me the show is not about following the characters and deep plots. It's more about the music, the snarkiness, and rooting for the underdog outsiders in a school that does not allow them to fit in. Britney/Brittany is one of the top 15 best Glee episodes of the series to me.. maybe top 10.

  2. Ok, so mostly, I agree with what you said. I'm just not sure about the Sue issue. I mean, of course, the whole good girl/bad girl trick is kinda overused in her case, but I still think an episode has many more chances of working out when Jane Lynch is in it.

But you're right about this half season being disappointing. I do hope they get their act together next year. And, PLEASE, someone just tell the writers to make up their minds about Finnchel. This are-they-aren't-they together thing is pissing everybody off. And not in a good way.

  3. I just have to say that i totally agree with you about the Mercedes thing. I thought they would do a storyline for Mercedes after Kurt left, but i just saw Mecedes saying "I'm here" at the Sectionals episode. How they gave a duet for Quinn/Sam Bieber and a solo for Santana and totally forgot about Mercedes, Tina and Artie ?

  4. I kind of look at it like I look at Degrassi. The stars are the upperclassmen or Soloists in this case regardless of age and the other more background singers get smaller roles or side plots and wait their turn for a story to make them the primary star of an episode or a story arc of a few episodes. When Rachel and Finn leave in a year then others will get more face time and become the next soloists and dominate the show. With 12 or more singers and 4 to 6 songs a week, it can be weeks between when the tier two or tier three singers get their own solos or plot line. Just how it goes with large ensembles and limited time.

  5. I was hoping that Terri was gonna be at Will's house... I want them back together.

  6. I like Terri too! She adds a lot to the show being another character to hate... plus she is just funny at times.

  7. Totally disagree about Becky being Sue's sidekick as I said before, they introduced her to give a touch of humanity to Sue. However now she is this twisted evil mini Sue, I hate watching an epsode of Glee with her in it because I hate the character and what the writers have done with her so much. They dampened out one of the two lights for the character of Sue (the other being her sister), which unfortunately makes Sue much more of a one note character. They have turned what could have done the same thing with the PA role except maybe make her more Sue's conscience and make her more sympathetic, it would have made Sue's 180 this episode a lot more believable.

  8. I liked this episode. I thought the green make-up was pointless on Sue, but I did find it hilarious. As for Finn and Rachel, I hate the pairing so much that when the two have a scene together I've actually either come to just get very angry and b*tch/make fun of the idiots, or that's when I take my snack or bathroom break. If they stay broken up I wouldn't give a s**t, just don't make me sit through every effin' episode and listen to each of them whine about the other and stare longingly at each other. I'm over it. So either put them back together and torture us some more, or just make them get over it and make me (and quite a few friends of mine) very happy people!!
I agree, this season has been pretty crappy. Right now I live for Artie and Brittany (they are just TOO cute!!) and that's all that gets me through the day. I don't like Quinn's relationship with Sam (I just don't like Sam). I thought Quinn needed to be single for a while and learn more about herself. She doesn't need a man in her life after what she's been through. At the same time, I would have liked to see closure with Quinn and Puck. I didn't like them as a couple, either, but the ending of last season kinda had them together and now all of the sudden they aren't and Puck (who I thought was head-over-heels for Quinn) is okay with it? No, I don't think so. We need closure with them in order to move on.
I have other rants, but don't feel like writing about it anymore. lol!
