Glee - "Making way for new cast members"

Dec 2, 2010

GLEE creator Ryan Murphy says he expects some of the stars of his hit music show to leave at the end of 2012.

Glee centres on the teachers and students of fictional McKinley High and Murphy wants the show to replicate a real high school with older students graduating and replaced by new faces.

Murphy has introduced Chord Overstreet as Sam Evans in the current second series to start the process.

"Every year we’re going to populate a new group," Murphy says. "There's nothing more depressing than a high schooler with a bald spot.

Murphy has nominated the end of the 2012 season of Glee as the likely time for cast exits.

Murphy admits to angst about any core cast leaving.

Stars including Lea Michelle, Cory Monteith, Dianna Agron, Chris Colfer and Kevin McHale have all sprung to worldwide fame playing Glee students.

"I think you have to be true to the fact that here is a group of people who come and go in these teachers' lives – they graduate and they're gone," Murphy says.

"When some of them finish their run at high school it will be very teary episodes.

"For me it will be particularly tough but a new crop (of actors) will come in."

Glee has been averaging around 12 million viewers in the USA and around 1.3 million in Australia but you would expect that figure to rise significantly for any "farewell" episodes.

Murphy says that he discussed 'graduating' core cast with Glee co-executive producer Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk.

"I was concerned about that (whether to have characters graduate and leave the show) because those kids caught on so quickly – but I think one of the things I'm very happy we’ve been able to do this years is we’ve brought in new characters."

"I think if you can keep regenerating – and I didn’t think we could – I didn’t know if people would want those characters (like Sam) but they do."

  1. I don't care about Sam... he's way too one-dimensional and boring.

Why don't they just turn the high school into a university? College glee club is often unheard of, and it'd be a nice change, and they'd get to keep the kids around. Sure, it's silly, but "Glee" is known for pulling off silly stunts. New protagonists could ruin the series. "Scrubs", anyone?

  2. It'd be easy for them to "stretch" the school year a bit: in 2011 we have the run to Regionals, in the 2011_2012 the run to Nationals, = 1 school year; most of them are sophomores, except Finn who's a Junior, so they still logically have one or two more school years, with the same system with could keep the core cast for 4 more years, at which point those rotated in as sophomores and freshmen would become the core characters.
But it's way to early to rotate characters.

  3. I'm not from America, but Rachel said she was born in 1994 last season if I'm right, so that would make her 16. So they have some more time. I would say rotate the characters in 2013 or later.

  4. Actually Rachel was born 18 December 1994, and she said like 15 episodes before that she was a sophomore (which I don't get cuz I was born in November 1994, and I'm a sophomore now, although not in the USA). And I also don't think that Sam is younger than the rest of the characters, so it kinda makes no sense that they introduced Sam, just because he'll graduate later...Probably they will flunk Brittany - I think Ryan Murphy said this somewhere.
IMO, this idea is not good. The cast of Glee is brilliant, this is the only show where I love every single actor and the characters they play.

  5. Thank god! Bring in some new blood because the old blood is at the point of getting stale. How many times can Rachel and Finn get together, break up or flirt about doing one or the other? Kurt's is cliche already. From being bullied for way to frickin long to the need to be overly dramatic. Plus series can't keep the same "teen" cast going indefinitely. 3 or 4 years tops for those they atart as juniors. Yeah... granted it is a risk to change students midstream and who knows if they will find the right mix, but who wants to watch this cast need dentures and spray on hair for their bald spots? Half the cast is background and could EASILY be replaced with out affecting storylines very much. Tina, Mike, and new big girl are esily replaced. While I like all 3 Cheerios they can bring in new cheerleader tpyes easily and not lose a step with the possible exception of Quin who has had real storylines about her. That time has passed now though. Mercedes is a basic diva schoolgirl. She can belt it out , but so can 100s of other actresses/singers just waiting to step in. Artie is unique, but there are many unique characters waiting to be written. Rachel and Finn are really the only two that would drastically affect the overall story if they were cut. Well, other than Sue, Will and Emma. Plus an added bonus of getting new actors in is that they can remove the attitudes of the actors that have been on long enough to think they are STARS. Lea is a diva from all accounts and does the guy the plays Puck seriously think he can be a hit solo artist? wow... delusional. This is a great stepping stone for all the actors in the series, but if the stay too long they will have a hard time ever being pictured as anything but their Glee character. No "teen" actor wants that.... just ask Screech/ Dustin Diamond how his career is going.

  6. They did this sort of thing with Skins in the UK, it was okay to an extent but I feel it kind of went down hill after the first generation cast left. It's a risk for the show's success but I understand you can't have them continue to be high school students forever. Perhaps they should just end it when the core group leave high school, end on a high note, so to speak.

  7. OMG NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT! I'd rather see the show end WELL in 4 seasons, than getting cancelled later on cuz it's not the same. Lea Michele IS glee...And ugh, Imagine Mr. Schu staying there foreverrrrr with new students? Horrible. I like all the characters we got, if they were to go I'd like it to be at the end of the series. I would NOT watch Glee without Rachel, etc...SORRY. But yeah mmm, introducing Sam makes no sense in changing characters, cuz the only reason Dijon Talton's character left is cuz he sucked. The idea someone mentioned of college Glee club isnt bad, it could be a solution. OR like I said, end the show after season 4, or 5, whatever. But don't bring a whole bunch of new people, it would be DEPRESSING.

  9. If they start showing more of Artie & Tina on the show they should have more cast members. This season they continue putting new stars in the show and not many of the main characters are getting any scenes at all. For example Mercedes, Artie & Tina.

and for sponsors as well. Why do they have Chevy as a sponsor and they don't use the cars at all? Why don't they take a page out of Bones & Hawaii Five-0 books they use their car sponsor very well

Range Rover is not done by Chevy. Trust me I'm Australian Chevy is affiliated with Holden Australia here and I know what the cars are like

  10. I'm very okay with this. It'll stop the show from becoming stale and scraping the bottom of the barrel for plots.

It works for "Skins," after all.

  11. Exactly! Shippers will hate it because they love the characters on a show, but people that like a show premise more or overall premise more so can deal with character changes more easily. Look at House... the large majoirty were irate and terrified when they cut loose the original diagnostic team, but for me the show got BETTER with the new doctors trying to make the team. After all the show is NOT about his team, The show is about HOUSE. And Glee is not about Fnchel or Quick or whatever other couple or character. It's about the overall club and the music... Maybe it is about Sue vs Will.. The establishment accepted popular Cheerios vs the underdog outcasts.

  12. You said what I'm thinking.

If this were "Buffy," where the character(s) are central to the show, then I'd understand.

But this is "Glee," where no character is central to its themes or premise. It has the luxury of going forward without any of its original cast. (Though, I think Will and Sue are definitely key figures in the show I'd like them to keep... and they actually have reasons to keep them. They're not graduating, after all).

  13. I agree completely! Artie used to get all of the solos because he was the only guy that could sing well without autotune (minus Mr. Schu of course and maybe Puck), but now he has been relegated to background wheelchair kid. Same with Tina who had the best one-liners at the end of last season.

  14. i agree with the comment about degrassi. i would prefer they just end the show. i won't be watching when they get rid of the original cast. all shows that do this fail. keep the original cast or cancel it.

  15. Many shows have hd success with revolving door casts House eliminated half its original cast(for a while until some came back) and it was better than before. Many of the Law & Order shows have had multiple big cast changeovers. Charmed went on for seasons after getting rid of one its its original 3 stars. To me I just think the series is about the popular vs the unpopular... it's about New Directions. If the snarkiness stays in the show, if the music and dance stays on the show and if Will and Sue stay on the show. to me at least, it will be the same show.

  16. If the only reason you're tuning in is because of this cast, instead of because of the show, then it's probably best you don't tune in.

  17. That's totally right I agree. The only best thing they got in the 2nd half of season was the Joss Whedon episode where they had their own story written into it. This is what I like about Joss Whedon is he'll try and think of something different all the time and make it look good that's why I love his stuff I'm a huge fan of his

I'm getting tired of the whole Rachel it's like all about me all the time. I'm glad Will is getting tired of it
