Thanks to Balian for the heads up.
Don't get Janeane Garofalo wrong — she's happy to be working on Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, the upcoming spin-off of the popular CBS crime procedural. In fact, she even named her new dog Unsub, after a bit of the show's jargon.
It's just that she sometimes wonders, does the show have to be so creepy? "I don't mean to be such a Puritan about this, but if I had kids, I would not allow them to watch," Garofalo tells TV Guide Magazine. "So why would I be doing a show that I would not allow my kids to watch? That's an issue that I grapple with."
Garofalo, best known for her comic chops, plays Agent Beth Griffith on the series (a premiere date is not yet set), which stars Oscar winner Forest Whitaker. "Women of a certain age who have an ambiguous sexuality tend to play cops, district attorneys, tough-but-fair lawyers," she says drolly. "Especially if you have a deep voice and you're getting old. You just go to the elephant burial ground of crime procedurals. Be that as it may, I'm always grateful for any job. So I'll do it!"
Still, she should've known what she was getting herself into with the gore — this is Criminal Minds, after all. Garofalo watched the original series after becoming involved with Suspect Behavior, but didn't imagine she'd have such an internal struggle with the show's violent content.
"Before I was going to do the show, I had discussions with the producer/creators and was led to believe they would not be so violent," she says. The episode she was shooting at the time of this interview involved a young female corpse being dragged to sundry crime scenes. "I don't believe we need to find these clever ways for somebody to slice somebody up," she adds. "On network TV too many women are being killed — that's every show, across the board — and too many women who seem to look great in their underwear. And I don't like it. Are we really masquerading as a crime show, but really what we're doing is showing a girl in her underwear? I don't like that, and if that's the case, it doesn't square with my conscience."
Garofalo has expressed her concerns to her producers. "To their credit, they'll let me sit in their office and say this — they're very open to it," she says, again adding, "I don't mean to sound like I'm criticizing the show, because I'm thrilled that they want to hire me. I'm still surprised by it."

Wow she is such a mess! Why would she do a show that she would not allow her kids to watch... well, maybe because the show is not made for kids and is meant for adults. I hate to mention it to her, but their more than a few not-so-frumpy-sexually-ambiguous women in crime dramas that do not consider it a grave yard or last stop in their careers. Also, most serial killers are men and most kill women (something like 70% of victims since 1980), most over prostitutes or other "undesirables". Many of them do it for direct sexual reasons or psycho-sexual reasons. So for me personally, darker more twisted crimes and killers make for better, more interesting stories. I do not care if the victims that happen to be women that are in the underwear or not, but occasionally... people are actually in JUST their underwear (even when not victims of sexual crimes and regardless of looking good or bad) and some manage to look good because of effort they put in... so it makes sense to me. Seriously... to question the show that hired you before it even airs knowing full well that it has "criminal minds" in the title and deals with violent and twisted... and often times , sexual predators. Imagine it actually being about that.... SHOCKING! It seems to me like she wants the paycheck, but does not want to lose her "street cred" with the nouveau feminists. I hope she decides if she can manage to live with herself and the job before too many people get attached to her character, or she gets fired for being a problem on the set. I would have respect for her had she turned down the job and then made the statements. I think I would have still diagreed, but I would have respected her more.
ReplyDeleteThen why is she doing the show??? There are so many great actresses out there who would love to have the role that I cannot believe they would keep her!
ReplyDeleteWow! I know her comic persona is all about complaining, and self flagellation, but jeez. She managed to not only insult herself in this, but all other female actors involved in procedural crime dramas. To call a show you star in "The Elephant burial ground of crime procedurals" before even the first episode has aired, is pretty bad.
ReplyDeleteI won't be surprised to see her killed off rather quickly, maybe then she'll sing a different tune.
Good I thought maybe it was just me that literally got angered when I read the article... The odd thing is that I like her in more than a couple of her Movies or TV roles and I do not even mind her politics.... I just think berating the show that hired you and is not even on the air yet is the wrong way to go about it. It is so much easier to like some actors if you know NOTHING about them outside of their roles! Lol.
ReplyDeleteLove Criminal Minds, but won't watch anything with Janeane Garafalo in it.
