Top 10 Songs Glee Should Sing

Nov 29, 2010

There have been only about three episodes this season that I have truly loved and that's because the music and the storylines have worked well.  I'm of course talking about "Grilled Cheesus," "Duets," and "The Substitute."  Those three episodes worked for me because they showcased multiple characters, a lot of well-chosen music, and gave us consistency in character, unlike a few other episodes this season that shall remain nameless.  Despite my gripes, Tuesdays are always days I eagerly anticipate because I know between 8 and 9 I'll be happy.  Even on a bad day, Glee consistently makes me smile.

However, what would make me even more happy is if Glee did songs of my choosing.  Here's a wish list of the songs I want the Gleeks to sing, and honestly, I'm surprised they haven't yet!  These are in no particular order:

1.  "Blinded by the Light" by Manfred Mann

I see this as a group number, led by the boys and Will especially, but an interesting surprise would be a strong female vocal starting it up.

2.  "Baba O'Riley" by The Who

How have they not done this song?  Seriously!

3.  "Seasons of Love" from Rent

Mercedes will kill the last note and I see this sending us into the holidays with a lot of heart.

4.  Anything by Coldplay

I'm picturing an angsty montage.  "Lost" would work.  So would "In My Place."  If we have a deeper voice, I would love to hear "Yes."

5.  "Under Pressure" by David Bowie and Queen

Would have to be the group number at the end.  The whole gang would start the song like they started "Don't Stop Believing" with a little acapella action.

6.  "Policy of Truth" by Depeche Mode

If they did this song, I can't imagine it being done without a serious modern update, but with lies spreading like wildfire in high school, I can't think of a more appropriate song.  Anyone remember when they used it in an old episode of 90210?  I just seriously dated myself...

7.  "Time of the Season" by The Zombies

Bonus points for combining the song with Melanie Fiona's single that samples it: "Give it to me Right."  If the mash-up happens, it has Mercedes' name written all over it.  If not, I see an amazing montage-y group number.

8.  "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson

Someone sings, Mike Chang and Brittany S. Pierce dance.  Done and done.  I know they're doing "Thriller" for the Superbowl, but I'm greedy.

9.  "Creep" by Radiohead

I'm picturing an amazing solo by Artie for this one.  He does melancholy so well!

10.  Anything by The Smiths

Artie, Rachel, and Kurt perform an anthem for the lonely.

  1. I loathe most of those songs.

  2. This doesn't have to be anything romantic between the two but I think Rachel and Puck would kill singing lady antebellum; need you now. Like they get paired up to sing this song, I think Leas and Marks voices would be great for this.

  3. Hmmm while I generally can't stand watching a whole episode of this show (not cause it sucks or anything like that, just because it annoys the hell out of me except for the Jane Lynch one-liners) I'd put forth THIS list:

    Anything BESIDES "Creep" from Radiohead
"Roll Away Your Stone" -- Mumford & Sons. (I'm sure it isn't a huge song, but listen to it and see what I mean)
    "Criminal" -- Fiona Apple
    "Vaporize" -- Broken Bells
"Hide & Seek" -- Imogen Heap
"Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" -- She & Him
And I just lost interest thinking about songs that'll never be on a show I don't watch. :/

  5. Yes for anything coldplay, baba o' riley and billie jean but not so much for the rest. If it were up to me, Wonderwall, Bittersweet Sympony and Apologize would be on that list!

  6. Great List and other than Billie Jean not a pop song mutt in the bunch! Waaaaay too much pop and R&B on Glee! I understand why, since by definition pop music is popular. Serriously though... ENOUGH! lol
Bittersweet Symphony is one of the most anthemic songs of last decade and could be good. I would love to hear some 80s/ early 90s songs too not of the classic rock or hair band variety. Wave of Mutilation by The Pixies, There she Goes by The Las, and Mazzy Star's classic Fade Into You. All three have a sound that has not been on Glee yet. There is more than enough drama on Glee to have some darker songs ala Joy Divison's Love Will Tear Us Apart, something by The Cure or Depeche Mode, or Running Up That Hill (Placebo's far superior version). I would love to hear anything by OURS, but not sure there is a male vocalist strong enough to carry Jimmy Gnecco's mic stand even. But overall, more rock is needed and not of the classic variety... 90s college rock or grunge, indie or alternative is sorely lacking. Even symphonic rock with the "school's orchestra" supporting them.

  8. The list is awesome and commendable. However, if I were to choose my top ten songs that I want to hear from Glee, well here are my choices.
    1. American Pie by Don McLean
    2. Tango Maureen from Rent
    3. Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen
    4. Making Love (Out of Nothing at All by Air Supply
    5. Viva La Vida by Coldplay
    6. Baby I Love Your Way by Bob Marley
    7. Will You Be There by Michael Jackson
    8. Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve
    9. Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen
    10. Hallowed Be Thy Name by Iron Maiden

  9. I'm damn sure Hallelujah will eventually at some point be done by them

  10. I personally think they should do something from The Backstreet Boys, since most of their songs are about love and HS age kids can relate to them

  11. I know this may seem weird, but I would really like to see them do something by the Barenaked Ladies.

  12. I'm waiting for the day when someone sings "Superfreak" to Santana.

  13. I agree with Seasons of Love! Great song
I would also love to have these songs on it:
-I want you to want me!
-Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks
-You can't stop the beat from Hairspray (guilty pleasure!)
-Heat of the Moment by Asia or anything from Boston by the guys
-My Immortal from Evanescence... or anything from them really... but I think Rachel's voice would be cool with that song
-Hot Blooded by Foreigner... since the guys are so horny this season! lol
    -Perfect from Hedley
-Fireflies by Owl City... because there are so many ways to play with the song to make it original
-Ocean Avenue or Paper Walls from Yellowcard... just because I love them!

  14. Anyway, I really want to hear:

Mercedes sing At Last by Etta James (when she finally gets a proper love interest like the rest of the cast and their mother has... literally)..
Artie sing Only One for Me by Brian McKnight (to Brittany of course).
Rachel sing Breaks My Heart by Monica (sings to Finn regarding how she makes it hard for him to love her).
Blain sing Invisible Touch by Genesis (IDK... I just really think he'd do a great job with this song).
    Puck sing

  15. GOSH... Why would Artie, Rachel or Kurt sing a song for the lonely? Just because Artie is in a wheelchair? Or because Kurt is gay? Or because Rachel is... IDK. Last time I checked, they all had proper love interests, unlike Mercedes, who seems to be the only character who isn't worth the effort to get a proper storyline.

And why is she always delegated the last not of a song? She could kill the entire "Seasons of Love" song, not just the last note.

This is a lot of what annoys me about the show... as you can see I'm passionate about it. lol.
