I know this has been a long time in the promising, but I have to admit, I accidentally deleted my first attempt and couldn't bring myself around to writing up the majority of the Review again.... up until now. So this isn't quite the epic it once was going to be sadly, but hopefully it's still a lotta fun. I've spiced it up with some graphs and stuff as well.

First off, I'm gonna chat about the episodes in season one. As I went through the season, I rated each episode outta ten, based on how I liked it, and I also modified as I got more to grips with the show and other episodes I discovered were better or worse than I thought!

I thought the season started quite slowly, I wasn't the pilot's biggest fan, problems such as the brothers not recognising each other when they had the fight annoyed me more than they should. Two people who know each other that well would recognise earlier. It was a small niggle, but it really, really annoyed me. I did however love the start with Mary Winchester dying, I thought it was creepy, dark and well shot, and I hadn't realised Jeffery Dean Morgan was in the show, but more on him later. Overall the episode just about pulled me in, the ending when Jessica died was awesome, the blood dripping onto Sam's face.
The main problem I found with the start of season one, and by that I mean up to around the point of "Bloody Mary" or "Skin" is that every story was very much the same, with no real mythology and as a result I felt that Sam, who came out of the pilot really strong lost his edge, and Dean despite not also having much to work with, was the far better character. The episodes just didn't progress, every week we rest and there was no real sense of foreboding on a grand scale. I could sum up those episodes as "We need to find Dad let's look in the journal and wander into another Supernatural event." One thing I noticed was the way the cases presented themselves to the brothers got so much stronger in the second half of the season. Perhaps the writers noticed it was a bit annoying earlier on, but it made the later episodes much more believeable. In truth, "Bloody Mary" and "Skin" didn't do a lot to help that fact, for the grand mythos to come back you need to wait for the episode "Home", but there's no denying that the 'Shapeshifter' storyline in "Skin" was one of the best stand alone episodes of season one, it grips you with the image of Dean escaping the scene of a bloodied woman. "Bloody Mary" also felt like the 'villain of the week' was better conceived and it stood out above the others before it. "Hook Man" followed on from "Skin" brilliantly, a real scary concept that was executed well. Angry Spirits are so important to the show, and I'm sure you would all agree, an angry Spirit with a huge hook is far cooler than one that is a swirly smoke thing that likes crashing planes or a murdered boy who controls water. I'd go for a spirit with a Hook any day. It worked.
To skip "Bugs" seems like a logical idea, but that would be being too kind on what was a stinker of an episode, illogical and stupid, I'll ignore the fact a woman flicked a spider off her forehead then continued watching TV, I'll ignore the fact that the brothers arrived at the house at midnight when the bugs attacked then five minutes later it was sunrise, what I won't ignore is how did the writers ever think that watched our brothers in an attic with a load of bugs buzzing around what ever scary. Hook, then Bugs. What happened? :P
Following on from that shambles was "Home" which was more of a disappointment than "Bugs" despite being such a better episode. It was a real chance to get into the grand mythology of the show and they shied away, giving us a different poltergeist and some moving furniture. I can't deny I wasn't happy to see John Winchester at the end, his lack of appearance was annoying to say the least, but when next week they ignored he had been back it was disappointing. Everything about the episode felt like safe writing, and for the episode they return to their home, where there mother was killed by a demon, hell they got that wrong.

Whatever disappointments I can say about those two episodes was made up for in the next three. "Asylum", "Scarecrow", and "Faith" was the best three episode run of the season (sadly, "Dead Man's Blood" let down the end of season extravaganza) "Asylum" was freaking scary, and everyone loves a mystery in an abandoned crazy house, and this worked on every level, creaking doors, dark corridors and a slightly goofy but still cool Doctor. And possessed Sam was almost as cool as shapeshifter Dean. Not quite though. "Scarecrow" had the advantage of perhaps he coolest villain of the season. That damn Scarecrow was awesome. Problems were Meg Masters and Sam's storyline were a bit boring, but it was cool seeing Dean work on his own (something he does just as well at in "The Benders". Also, whoever casted Meg Masters majorly buggered up, she was laughably annoying and not scary. Compare Masters to the Demon when he possesses John Winchester in the finale. It's not even close. It really isn't.
"Faith" worked because, finally, I felt we really got to see the true Dean Winchester. Yeah, we know he loves his dad and he's very cool and bad ass. But "Faith" gave him more humility and will for life. I assure you, without "Faith", Dean wouldn't be half the character he is. How much from now on does he develop. He owns the finale, and it wasn't really his story. More on that in a bit though...
As became custom in Season one, we get some awesome episodes, so we then get a clanger, and Route 666 was the bad boy to take the hit. Sadly, it was supposed to be a continuation of the Dean storyline that was so brilliantly done in "Faith", and it was unnecessary, and it didn't work, mainly because his first love, Cassie is the most annoying love interest season one throws at us, and the big baddie was... a truck. Possessed 'Hot Wheels'... Come on writers?!
"Nightmare" was a very solid episode, the kind of episode "Home" should have been, and Sam's premonitions actually became interesting, the discovery of other with 'talents' was a cool reveal, and I liked the idea behind it. A layer of the mythos was peeled back, and it was needed, it worked. Hats off all round then...
"The Benders" was a funny animal, as it was the, 'appears Supernatural, but it's actually some crazy humans' storyline which I really enjoyed. Was also fun to see Dean saying how humans are worse than most of the things he hunts. Had some good spooky scenes where he's looking for Sam. Main problem with the episode was Sam was useless, thankfully Dean carried the episode well.
"Shadow" was an important episode in the season, but, as was a running problem (maybe the only problem) with the grand mythology was that Meg Masters ruined it with her annoying character. However we got the fact that the Demon wanted John, and attacking the brothers was the way to get him. John returns again, and I was excited to think that he was actually gonna do a case next episode with the brothers, but once again he left. That was one of the annoying points of the season. Jeffery Dean Morgan as I understand it was very busy, but the fact they put so much focus on the character, getting so little of him was nothing but frustrating. So seeing him drive off was disappointing, seeing Meg Masters still living, even more so!
"Hell House" was a cool concept, and it worked very well, and was a funny episode with the two 'Ghostbusters' type guys involved in the storyline too. As a standalone, I felt it was a good episode. "Something Wicked" I wasn't so in love with, but it was a lot better than earlier stand alone episodes, and with Dean in good form, it worked okay.
"Provenance" was my favourite episode of the season. I loved the idea of the girl coming out of the painting and killing, it's reveal to be her and not the father awesome. There's also something scary about paintings changing position. Also, Sarah was the best love interest of the year (hope she comes back in season two onwards) and the brother chemistry was really in full swing. It just worked through and through, funny, tense, scary and gave Sam a chance to let his emotions out.
The final three episodes revolve around the 'colt' a gun John Winchester believes can kill the Demon and end all the families mission once and for all. The plus point is that John Winchester finally properly shows up and does something, the family tensions and relationships finally shown on screen very well. The John-Sam disagrements. The John-Dean team. All was really good. The thing I didn't like was the vampires. Not that I'm against them, but they weren't something I thought Supernatural was about, and even though I liked the writers take on them, I'm still not completely sold. Still, they get the gun and we move to the two-part finale, as it should be viewed. "Salvation" is the set-up episode. Sam has a premonition, Demon wants the gun, John takes one storyline and goes to hand over said gun (although we know it's a fake) whilst the brothers aim to catch the demon when he tries to kill another babies mother. I kinda felt "Salvation" had a better storyline than "Devils Trap" in terms of 'catching the demon' and the finale served more like a season premiere, as the brothers deal with the aftermath of the failed attempt to catch him, and it led to the some what annoying cliffhanger to the whole season. Has it ended with John captured and the Demon having got away, it would have been perfect. I liked that it went on, but it took away the cliffhanger, as the storyline ran its course and they had to stick in the 'car crash.' Honestly, I didn't like that part of the finale. What I did love was John, whilst possessed by the demon, having the showdown with the brothers. Yeah, it was talkie, it wasn't full of action. But BOY, it was tense. Creepy, informative and oozing in class, the scene was THE scene of the season. We learn there is a plan, the Demon needs Sam's full attention, killing off his loved-ones is all "part of the plan". So exciting, very well written, so well acted by Jeffery Dean Morgan. But it was in fact Dean, on the out-skirts of the John-Demon-John storyline who stole the show, his love for his family so clear, his character really emerging as the stronger brother. It was brilliantly acted by Jensen Ackles, top kudos to him. Also, when Sam had the chance to shoot his daddy-demon hybrid, I was in missed emotions, but I decided he should have shot him, John's not gonna like the fact they missed the chance to kill that demon.

And so we end the season with the three family members in grave peril, they all looked pretty bloodied and beaten in the car. Some crazy mo-fo demon driving the truck. Hope that pays off well in season two...
My guesses would be that season two will wrap up the demon storyline whilst setting up something bigger, and hopefully a bit more clarity in the father-son relationship...
For your viewing pleasures, as I went through I also scored the brothers by episode in how good they were, in terms of acting, interest, characters in general. Here we go...
(This is outta ten, not twelve as the Graph Suggests)

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Season One, I'm glad I watched it. It was more dark, scary and better acted than I expected, it was fun and it was constantly fresh. I'm not denying, It had some howlers, some real howlers, and also some annoying characters, and villain of the weeks. But I recommend it for a watch, It's a lot of fun. :)
I know this isn't as long as promised, but the deletion (if that's a word) kinda wrecked it, as it took me ages to write. My own fault though, teaches me to have a computer clear out :P
Do you all agree, disagree, any other comments on season one of Supernatural? Comment away, ask questions, I'll answer them all as I understand I didn't go as in depth as I'd hoped. I promise, when I finish Season Two, whenever that is, I'll go more in depth :)
I may also write something else about the season if anyone wants to know anything.
Basically, for now, re-live the first season of Supernatural. You know you want too...
Adam

I have recently began watching Supernatural as well, and I agree on most point with your opinion on season 1. I enjoyed season 1, but it definitely does not have the mythology and gripping-storylines season 2 has. Believe me, from season 2 onwards, the show really pick up speed. Am now at 5x01 (after watching season 4 in two weeks) and the show just keeps getting better and better.
ReplyDeleteAwesome juice!
ReplyDeleteabsolutely wonderful i like the humor the actuion the actors all of it sera is doing as great job i have watched all season several times and i think this is the best so far.
ReplyDelete"there's no denying that the 'Shapeshifter' storyline in "Skin" was one of the best stand alone episodes of season one, it grips you with the image of Sam escaping he scene of a bloodied woman. "
ReplyDeleteIt was Dean who escapes the scene not Sam.
Supernatural is my favorite show, but I agree season 1 is very inconsistent. There are some amazing episodes and then there are some truly awful ones. I also agree that Sam kinda gets pushed to the wayside. The show is supposed to be about Sam, but then Jensen came in and made Dean this tragic charismatic character who you can't help but love. As a result, the show changed point of view to focus more on Dean IMO.
In the end, S1 is a necessary evil in order to enjoy the rest of the series, but there are several skippable episodes. I hope you enjoy season 2. Even years later it's still one of my favorites, second only to season 4.
Dude, you're right. Slip of the brain. I'll get it changed :)
ReplyDeleteWell, I have to say season 2 is still my favorite season. But season 1 is the runner up. I think I enjoyed the show more when things weren't jet so complicated, had Dean and Sam did things their own way, without angels nagging about their destiny. No offence, I still like Supernatural very much, but sometimes I just miss the uncomplicatedness from the first seasons. When is was just Sam and Dean (and daddy Winchester), and nothing else mathered...
ReplyDeleteHey thanks for this Adam - I've really been looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteI've just skimmed through it for now - work beckons unfortunately - but will be back later to comment. (Yeah what can I say..... can't keep my thoughts to myself no way, no how.....) :))
yeah but that, unfortunately, is the thing with shows like that. They either stay in the same place for the entire run (CSI) or they move towards the bigger picture.
ReplyDeleteDespite enjoying the angel/demon story more than the good ol' simple times, I can resemble with LOST as I really enjoying the easier days on the Island when it was all mystery etc before Jack started crying the entire season how it is his destiny to shave his break-up beard and re-paint jacob's cabin (lol)
This is awesome Adam! And I totally agree with your summary, especially about salvation! Great job!
ReplyDeleteOhh, I really like this :P It felt good reading something about S1 and not S6 for a change. I see how much I miss how things were in S1 now, but still, I remember the storyline was very slow at the beginning. Things have gotten so much better (even though the beginning of S6 was a downer for me). Looking forward to your review on S2 :P
ReplyDeleteOkay, about "Bugs"...
ReplyDeleteThis episode, far and above any other in the series, gets viciously maligned by almost all fans. Is the plot of the episode stupid? Yes. Illogical? Yes. Is the "Indian burial ground" element a ridiculous and insulting cliche? Yes.
What "Bugs" does have going for it, though, are some great character moments. Admittedly, that is ALL it has going for it. So, the episode is worth watching just for the brothers' interactions even if the rest of the episode makes you cringe and roll your eyes.
p.s. - Thanks for introducing me to the word "niggle", Adam. :)
Hope work isn't too bad. And glad there's some people who wanna read it!
ReplyDeleteThanks. Salvation, the more I think about it would have been a better finale, especially with the cliff hanger offered at the end of 'Devils Trap.'
ReplyDeleteBut then I also love bits of the finale...
Glad you enjoyed it, and hopefully it won't be too long before Season 2 Review :)
ReplyDeleteAhhh... niggle. Use it wisely :P
ReplyDeleteBug did have some good points in terms of the brothers. I'll admit, there was one conversation between the brothers, that I can't actually remember what it actually was, but after I finished the episode I was thinking "What a shame that bit was in this episode!"
It was the spider/woman bit that annoyed me the most, although it's very entertaining if you rewind and watch it a few times in a row. That woman needs some acting classes :P
Oh, I totally agree about the woman's acting skills. Not to mention the spiders (post mortem) were obviously plastic. It was hilariously bad. It's a good thing the show's special effects team got better as the series went on.
ReplyDeleteIf it's one thing I'm grateful for about this episode, it's that I get to laugh at Dean's odd amount of excitement over a shower. No self-respecting guy should ever get that giddy over something like that. Lol. Also, I think this may be the one and only episode that the brothers chose to be squatters instead of renting a motel room.
I tried watching Supernatural the first season when it aired and lost interest afterthe first few episodes and have not watched since. It always puzzles me it has such a rabid following in here. Makes me wonder if I should try it again and just forgive the first few bad episodes? I can love me some scifi/paranormal based TV series, but it did NOT draw me in at all when it first started. Has it got that much better.. or just after years of it the show people are VERY emotionally invested? Any suggestions... ?
ReplyDeleteOh, believe me, it gets so much better. The first episode I ever saw was Faith, so I was naturally hooked. And IMO season 2 is the second best season.(season 4 takes the cake) Season 5 was my least favourite but had a few exceptional episodes. Thankfully Season 6 has picked up the pace and is performing very well, especially last episode.
ReplyDeleteGreat Review, Adam! Season 2 does not have too many clunkers, and no Meg Masters to annoy you.:) I hope you continue to be a fan.
Try and watch the entire season, then see if it hooks you in. :) Personally I fell in love at Episode 1, lol. To each his own. Or her's rather.
ReplyDeleteAdam! I like! :D Should we be expecting a Season 2 write up?
ReplyDeleteI look back on season 1 with fondness too. I like that the brothers had a lot less baggage. For me, season 1 has some of the most iconic people in peril (PiP's) and villains around. The scarecrow was phenomenally creepy and the shapeshifter was done best in Skin. Sarah is by far my favorite PiP of all seasons; I really want to see her again and she is the female I measure all others against. Only Lisa measures up. I guess I also like it because the monsters were unique back then, but now we've down shapeshifters and vampires to death. Back then everything was new and it was such a great ride.
ReplyDeleteIt is my intention. Just need to get round to watching it now :P
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it also!
I can't help you with season 1 because I was hooked on the show at episode 3, when Dean became a solid character. However, season 2 is when it became more like other genre shows in that the mytharc got bigger and more serious. By season 3 and especially 4 and 5, it is a much darker series with grandiose consequences. If you like more typical genre fare, these will be the seasons for you. You could read a general summary of season 1 and jump into season 2 and then go back to season 1 when you are good and hooked.
ReplyDeleteThe same happend to me, believe me!
ReplyDeleteI started with Season 1, lost interest, than as Season 3 aired, I had nothing better to watch and thought "Oh, what the hell, let´s give it a chance again". No need to say I got hooked up on the series, got Season 1 and 2 and what can I say...
Ever since it is up until now my favorite TV show.
It doesn´t mean, this will happen to you too, but I advised two different friends of mine to watch it and they got hooked up too. SPN is like the Bermuda Triangle, once in, you never come out again :)
Give it a try.
I think I will try it again maybe this Holiday season or sometime soon. I am so anal I doubt I coudl start with season 2, but It is an idea. I loved Carnivale & Buffy and enjoyed a number of other supernatual (little "s") shows (even soem bad ones like Reaper) so I think I should be able to get into it. I think I maybe just feared it would be cancelled and never checked back in once it was picked up and continued on. Every series has ebbs and flows, but if I know season 2 and beyond shows maturation as a series I can deal with the slow parts too. Thanks for advice.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't too impressed with the pilot when it first aired but I stuck with the show. I wasn't sold on supernatural until "Scarecrow" when Meg showed up for the first time and slit that guy's throat at the end of the episode.
ReplyDeleteHi Adam! I'm so glad you wrote this. It's always fun to hear what new people think of the season since many of us have hashed out every nuance for years. I find that for the most part I agree with you, except that I thought the best part of Salvation was the previously set to Carry on My Wayward, Son and I love, love, love Devil's Trap. I too found Meg annoying to begin with but the scene in which Dean interrogates her for information is one of my favorite scenes. I think I am one of the few who like Meg 2.0 better than the original, although Nicki Aycox was a far better actress in other shows, so I blame the writing. I also wouldn't have scored Hookman with the completely pathetic Lori or Home with Missouri - the most annoying character in season 1 - as high as you did.
ReplyDeleteAsylum, Scarecrow, Faith (brilliant trifecta), Provenance, and Devil's Trap were my favorites along with Dead in the Water, if only because I first loved Dean's character there. Asylum was creepy and Kat was a great character. It also connected the case with the brothers relationship better than a lot had at that point. For never really being seen, that scarecrow was hideous and freaked me out more than any other villain. It also had fantastic lines. "I hope your apple pie's freaking worth it." Faith had the great role reversal with Sam taking care of Dean. It was also one of the first times we seen Dean dealing with guilt. Unfortunately, this becomes the main show in later years. Provenance had Sarah - enough said. Well that and "low-sodium freaks!" Devil's Trap with its possession and the whole idea of family and what that means was amazing. I agree that this scene was the heart of season 1 and one of the best scenes in the show's history.
Bugs and Route 666 were the worst. Sorry Bruce but Bugs narrowly beats out Route 666 for the worst by the mere fact that Route 666 had better lines. They both sucked as far as guest actors, but the actor who portrayed Cassie as a fence post was the worst in the entire show history. Becky is equally annoying but she is supposed to be. All in all, when they thought up these 2 episodes, they should have scrapped them for the next idea on the pile. Still, I don't know any show's season 1 that didn't have a few stinkers.
Word of warning Adam. Supernatural fans are more intense than most shows and doing things like rating the brothers may require you to duck under heavy furniture. Also, most people would probably think of Provenance as stronger for Sam. That's the only thing that really surprised me in your review.
I think Supernatural has a similar flow as Buffy. Buffy's first season was mostly standalones with the overarching theme (Hellmouth) becoming more intense in the last couple of episodes. Then season 2 became more coherent with the Angel's lost soul plot line. That is what happens with Supernatural as season 1 has a lot of standalones with the overarching theme (find dad, kill YED) really hitting at the end. Season 2 also goes darker with the introduction of the Super Special kids and what YED has in mind for their "talents".
ReplyDeleteBut at least we are all lost in the triangle together. And really, living here isn't so bad once you learn to navigate the rocky terrain. :-P Besides, we have so many exciting twists to enjoy together.
ReplyDeleteHarris? Related to Jensen's wife are you, cos that's the only reason you could have for how ridiculously unfair and biased this is...Boring another biased Dean fan, only seeing the a-typical caricature as the best. I didn't enjoy your biased review, any true fan wouldn't sit there rating the boys. I've loved Sam since day 1 but i'd never sit there harshing on Dean and rating him every episode, critic or not. Shame on you. If Sam's so meaningless how come S6 has been awful now he is missing a vital part of himself, correlates pretty obviously I'd say. Yeah i'll let you figure it out. I hated this review. Anyway there you go. I prefer Sam as I did in the pilot as I do now, he's so much more real and so much less of a caricature. And reviews like this where you're yet another boring raving on Ackles reviewer brings nothing new to the table. Also you're five years late. We're in season 6 now, and Dean, dull as all hell. So you can look forward to that.
ReplyDeleteHarris? As in relation to Jensen's wife? It's the only thing I can think of for how epically wrong, unfair and ridiculous this review in fact was. Boring another biased Dean fan, only seeing the a-typical caricature as the best. I didn't enjoy your biased review, any true fan wouldn't sit there rating the boys. I've loved Sam since day 1 but i'd never sit there criticizing Dean and rating him every episode, critic or not. Shame on you. If Sam's so meaningless and lame compared to Dean how come S6 has been awful now he is missing a vital part of himself, correlates pretty obviously I'd say. How about recognizing both boys talent instead of being so harsh on your little pedestal of contempt. Also you're five years late. We're in season 6 now, and Dean...dull as all hell. So you can look forward to that.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't say or imply that Sam was meaningless. In fact, the whole season revolved around Sam. This is simply the opinion of a new viewer to Supernatural. The whole point of the review was for a new viewer to tell us how he saw the show. He knows we are in season 6, but we have been encouraging Adam to watch Supernatural since the summer and I for one was really pushing to hear his thoughts. I'm sorry that you didn't like the review but this does not help your case by trashing what another viewer feels. Maybe you should instead tell us exactly what you loved about Sam in the first season. That would enhance the conversation and give us another way to view things. Please remember that Adam is new to this fandom and does not know how intense things can get between viewers about the brothers. I would rather encourage him to speak his opinion than shut new people down.
ReplyDeleteThat's a mistake by me. Provenance should be Sam higher! I'll sort it out :)
ReplyDeleteWow. Any reason you posted this twice?
ReplyDeleteI'm not biased towards Dean, I like Sam just as much, I just felt Dean was stronger towards the end of the season.
I just did it for fun because some people wanted to hear my review following the Character and Show Competitions.
You may as well head to the Season 6 discussions if this doesn't interest you :)
Oh, and no... no relation.
ReplyDelete:)
Course! Jensen blew that out of the park then!
ReplyDeleteThat's how SPN goes. It started good and just erupted into something amazing :)
ReplyDeleteGOOD GOD...just wait until the season 2 premiere. I loooveedd that episode. :)
ReplyDelete"In My Time of Dying" is awesome...
I also wanted to say, I totally loved that Previously. It rocked big time! Had forgotten about it....
ReplyDeleteI loved the idea of Hook Man... which is why I rated it so high. Thought it was really cool :P
My general thoughts on SPN season 1 are similar to yours. (Although, I loved Meg when she slashed throats, etc...) Please tell me you loved the opening of Devil's Trap when they exorcised Meg? That's what sealed the deal for me...
ReplyDeleteAlso, the car crash at the end completely floored me...I had no suspicion of how things could possibly get worse...and then...they did.
I found that in the first half of the season, both of the brothers really irked me (Dean's one-liners were more annoying than hysterical--this changes amazingly as the show goes on of course/Sam was whiny, but he had reasons to be so it was a tiny irking to me...) I felt like halfway through the season they changed gears as well. "Faith", "Hook", "Scarecrow", and "Asylum" are some of the greatest standalone hours in tv history imo and I am glad you got to witness them...Sorry you had to witness Bugs and R666...believe me, even the writers inevitably apologize for those episodes (via the episode "The Monster at the End of this Book" a season 4 episode...) Season 2 picks up what season 1 generally lacks and really brings the show to a new level. I will say this: there's a lot (well, really a TON) of things that you are probably not aware of about things that are going on, but start paying attention to some of the "Standalone" episodes, because they're more tied to the plot than you'd think...And if you think you know Mr. Yellow Eyes' plans for Sam, well...think again. That's all I can say. Anything more and you'll be way too spoiled. :) Anyway, it's generally an uphill lift in quality and story from here on out (Season 3 was possibly going to be the best ever, but it was cut short by the writer's strike and while it has some of the best episodes of SPN ever, it's a little strangely paced. Season 4 brings the plot into fruition and season, while paced awkwardly, is astounding.)
You're correct. The writers in several interviews state that the first half of season one they were finding their footing. They eventually go from "what monster do we want next" to "what do we want to reveal about Sam and Dean? What monster can do that?"
ReplyDeleteIn Skin, it's the peek into Dean's psyche - the belief that Sam betrayed/abandoned him by going to college. In Asylum, it's the reverse - Sam's anger that he couldn't escape, no matter how he tried - and the focus of that on Dean.
Gosh after this I DO want to rewatch it... damn dont have time right now any way...
ReplyDeleteLove the graph, not sure your episode liking works with your comment all the time ^_- , or maybe 7 is good I dont know hahaha any way. YEAH Meg IS annoying but I liked the actress. And I agree with Sara best love interess ever (and I saw 6 season ;) she's my fav.) AW I feel like if I comment I'll let something slip. AND IT WOULD BE BLASPHEMY ;)
So Happy you watched and liked it ;)
Hey Adam - I'm back from work - it really sucks when real life gets in the way of discussing something of earth shattering importance like SPN :(
ReplyDeleteOkay so I loved your review. :) I've never actually sat down and marked episodes out of ten, so it's interesting to see how you've rated them. I also appreciate knowing the 'why' rather than just the end verdict.
The first episode I ever saw was Jus In Bello in season 3 (which IMHO is one of the best episodes EVER) so, being that I'm a bit OCD about these things, I went back to the beginning.
Looking back from here, it's interesting to notice how the show has grown and evolved over time. Early S1 reminds me of adolescence - skinny, gangling, complete with pimples, bad wardrobe choices, and occasional rebellious outbreaks. But, over time this adolescent matured and grew into it's skin, and, by S2 become what it was meant to be. Don't get me wrong - our show is far from perfect, and even from S2 onward there are some episodes that can truly only be described as 'dogs' - as no doubt you will discover. But overall, it becomes apparent that the writers, directors, crew and cast are all 100% behind their show. And I think that is something the fans respond to - even if we don't fully recognise that's what we're doing.
The only thing I disagree with you about was the end of Devil's Trap - I love that big ass truck coming out of nowhere - but we can agree to disagree, right? ;)))
Yeah LOL they definatly made up for that finale 5 min of season 1 (didnt like the car crash so much.)
ReplyDeleteYou are soooo right! I couldn't have put it any better. :D
ReplyDeleteWhat about that episode in season 5
ReplyDelete(SPOILERS ADAM!!! DON'T LOOOOOK!!!!!!)
Where.........R.p.h.l (messed up the name) finds them with Cas? (I think it was episode 3 or 4 in season 5...) and the episode "Red Sky at Morning" I seem to remember Bela bitching about them squatting in an old mansion...
That was when it went from cool experiment in a a new show to must-watch for me.
ReplyDeleteWell, I thought is was great, Adam. I watched this show from the beginning, I was hooked right away. I think as you see more seasons you'll know Kripke's plan better. I catch re-runs on TNT some mornings, seeing the early years still interest me. Let's just say when you get to seasons 4,5,6 you'll appreciate seasons 1 and 2 better. I like both Jensen and Jared, as the seasons go on their acting gets better. Anyways "bugs" was the worst episode of season 1, and in second "Route 666". All I have to say is keep watching because it does get darker, and some fans say it's worse, but I think the show gets better. As much as I like season 1, the show won't have made it if their was just monster of week episodes for six years. Forget what other people say, write what you feel.
ReplyDeleteI will never understand your dislike for Missouri Moseley.. I loved that woman to death...
ReplyDelete7's pretty good. Things like Dead Man's Blood I wasn't keen on the Vampires, but I enjoyed the characters, storyline etc so it got an 8, and for example The Benders which I thought worked really well for a 'not supernatural' baddie, but compare it to say, Salvation, it's no match. That's basically how I rated them :)
ReplyDeleteI love a bit of Agree-ing to Disagree.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll appreciate it more after watching season two and seeing how it ties in.
I tip my hat to you. You have a better memory than mine, apparently. ;)
ReplyDeleteThat was the first, true WTF moment that Supernatural had and that's what I've always liked best about the show - the WTF moments.
ReplyDeleteI can't be objective on that subject. I don't think I've ever seen a show where I've disliked a character that Loretta Devine was playing.
ReplyDeleteOH got it :DDD Cause you said something about Nightmare being a strong ep and rated it 7. for me thats no good.
ReplyDeleteBenders is my fav. :D It's so original for supernatural :D
okay that sounded like supernatural wasnt original.. NOT what I meant... oh you get it... :S
ReplyDeleteWAH WAH WAH.
ReplyDeleteAnd quit posting spoilers for season 6 here, obviously he's not that far yet.
IKR!? BIGTRUCKGOESSMASH! :)
ReplyDeleteBecause you dont like season 6 doesnt mean the season is bad... I love it. Love that Sam isnt Sam, always thought sam was a little more boring then Dean and now he is awesome and so interesting.
ReplyDeleteAnd if people praise Ackles acting is because he is great... The crew talk about him do you think they are all dean fans who can only see "a-typical caricature as the best".. if that's what you think of Dean you did not watch the same show as me.
Sorry had to speak. Yes I'm a Dean girl, sue me. And I started watching this show for Jared, btw not a Jensen fan at first.
*Nods* Yeah after the season opener I'm pretty sure you will like the finale ;)
ReplyDeleteI tend to view it as 8-10 are all awesome to good, then 6-7 are all a big blob of with potential or interesting but not well done, and then downwards are poor to, pardon the english, total bollocks. :P
ReplyDeleteThe ones in the 6-7 bracket are the hardest to separate and decide if their any good or not. For me anyhow...
I honestly feel like it just came to me...I had to think about it :/
ReplyDeleteStill, squatting is definitely not something they do often.
yeah, I live for the SPN WTF moments. (I'm glad we're getting a fair share of those early in season 6 as well..."Family Matters" just had me all WTF'd out!)
ReplyDeleteYour avatar is a picture of the Arcade Fire EP.
ReplyDelete:)
OH! LOL I'm such an idiot hahahaha I read it wrong hahaha so everything was 1 point under what you gave it ahahaha. I thought you were harsh LOL. All good now HEHHE
ReplyDeleteBecky is awesome COME ON! I'm on a mission to find someone else that loves her... any one? She is us but... more.. crazy and anoying but... ah... dont understand why E_V_E_R_Y one hate her. I dont!!!
ReplyDeleteany way lol sorry for that ehehhe. (though i HATED when chuck wanted to date her.... there is a limit lol)
oh god TRY IT. I waited 5 years to try it and I regret it so much (waiting not trying lol) now I feel like an intruder in the supernatural fan family LOL! Seriously you have to watch season 1. And watch it like.. at once, after a few episode you wont be able to stop mwahhaha (took me 6 days to watch all 5 seasons and I only started for Jared, thought the show looked quite boring for years lol)
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell!? Who attacks someone for how they enjoy a TV show? Who attacks someone for being biased while, in the same post, makes it absolutely clear that THEY are very biased? I know who - someone who obviously doesn't realize that this post, not to mention this entire website, is supposed to be FUN.
ReplyDeleteNowhere in his review is there anything malicious or mean-spirited but your post seems to cover that oversight pretty well. Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, is entitled to their opinion but to express that opinion in such a vile, hateful way is disgusting - especially toward someone who obviously doesn't deserve it.
Is it too much to ask to be respectful even if you don't share the same opinion?
EHEHE getting friends into it is so much fun heheh. My friends are all screaming for me to shut up about it and that the show sucks and I forced YES FORCED 3 of them to watched and they called me every day to come to my place and watch the season HHAHAHA. I call this a personnal victory LOL
ReplyDeleteHey Bruce - you said what I was thinking but I was too chicken to say it.
ReplyDeleteOh crap. I think by agreeing with you I just said it anyway. So much for being chicken :P
I've singlehandedly got 10-13 people obsessed with Supernatural.
ReplyDelete(I'm working on 2-3 people right now to get even more!) I am also responsible for 4-5 people getting into Fringe, and I've driven people MAD by letting people borrow my seasons of Damages! I force stuff on people wayyyy too much but it's only cause I am right--my shows are the best on tv. :P
I thought she was hilarious, and also that she reminded them about what went wrong with the colt back in a previous season so they had a clue as to where to go next on their hunt!
ReplyDeleteNICE ahahaa. I wish I could force more people hehe, I do watch a lot of crappy tv but a lot of great to. :D Dexter and Supernatural are my goals right now lol. All my friends are going in medecine so "They dont have for tv and blablabalabalablab" I need geek friends ahaaha. Working on that hehehe
ReplyDeleteI got 2 words for you: "FRESH BLOOD."
ReplyDelete;)
:DDD VICTORY!!! I thought I was crazy with that one hehehe. She is just the right amount of crazy and anoying to be awesome and funny hahah
ReplyDeleteLOL season 2 is when what I call the" Kripke Effect" started to intensify...The Kripke effect is the sudden, mind-raping turn of events that leaves you emotionally exhausted. O_O (and of course, starving for more!)
ReplyDeleteI kinda disagree on the Meg front. While I didn't like her as a character I think Nicki Aycox did a great job acting wise and the character did help move the story along a little bit.
ReplyDeleteAnd I liked that John wasn't in it too much. He's a great character and I love Jeffrey Dean Morgan but having him stick around too much would ruin the brother dynamic I think, and that's what the show is mostly about. Sam and Dean seem to change a bit when he's around and I think, in small doses, that's good but then I want them to get back to their normal selves.
Other than that though it was a really good review. Glad you enjoyed it and have fun with Season 2. =D
(Also, I'm already in the middle of a season 1 re-watch so that's good xD)
Oh, man I envy you. I've only got 2 people hooked. And one of them would watch CSI over it. :( However, the other one is a die hard fan for life. Basically when I try to tell my other friends about it, I will say it's on the CW and they look at me like I'm crazy.
ReplyDeleteAWESOME, excellent article, I have nothing to add except that finally I find someone who thinks that Sam in Home are most interesting than Dean and Jared acting was outstanding too, normally people focus on Dean in this epi but for my point of view I see more interesting in Sam in Home than Dean
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with (And endorse) this message.
ReplyDeleteI loved it! And I hated it! I think I would have loved it more if I hadn't had to wait for 4 months to see what happened. Of course then I wouldn't have sought out Supernatural fans on the internet and so wouldn't have eventually met you fine folks. Again all I can say is KRIPKEEEEE!!!
ReplyDeleteThat was the first one for you? Wow! For me it was when they killed off Jessica. I really thought it was going to turn into a tiresome love triangle, but then they killed Jessica and I was riveted. I remember being on line and someone said, "What the *****! They killed Joey Potter!" That's was almost exactly what I was thinking. That's when I knew I would watch it the next week.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, the curse of the crummy network. I had the same problem. Plus, I tried to get my teen into it because she loved horror movies, but because it was me that liked it, she wouldn't go for it. I can't wait when she's in her late 20's or 30's and catches it on TV sometime. When she gets hooked I have a great big I told you so already planned out.
ReplyDeleteAww, you are not an intruder but a valued member of the Winchester-ish family. I am still amazed by your fortitude. I LOVE this show but there's no way I could watch 104 episodes in 6 days.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that didn't do anything for me. She was just a day player so she was fair game. It didn't shock me at all. It takes a lot for a show to surprise me.
ReplyDeleteI like Loretta Devine. I hate Missouri Mosley. To me she is a pushy woman with no right to get into Dean and Sam's business. Plus, she was flat out mean to Dean. I know Dean can handle it himself, but she was so one-sided in the way she treated the brothers. I would have liked her better if she was nice to both or horrible to both, but I always hate when characters treat virtual strangers with such disdain, especially when it is targeted at one character like that.
ReplyDelete:DDD Yeah though I got to say I was between jobs (wow lol.... sounds so grown up but i mean waitress and then mcdo... HAHAH) so I didnt really had a life during those 6 days LOL. Only went out 6 hours for a super with friends and took that time to buy the seasons. :DDDD not crazy at all :DDD
ReplyDeleteis it really 104? oh god... I really should stop saying i watched that in 6 days... people think im crazy :O My friends are ashamed heheheh.
Now that was a great episode! Man I miss Gordon. I miss Jesus hunter too. "Stop playing with my Jesus" cracks me up every time.
ReplyDeleteActually I think this is one of the few times when you really had to be there to appreciate it. It wasn't just the car crash coming out of nowhere. It was the endless Hellatus (coined that summer I believe) trying to figure out if everyone survives and how they would work the logistics (hospital bills, insurance, etc.). It was sweating over the details to catch a faint glimpse of hope that the character that sucked you in wasn't going to bite it in the end. And yes, I am talking about the Impala! It was searching for and empathizing with other people who knew how important this was to life when your family rolled their eyes and said you were crazy to get that worked up about a TV show and a stupid car (blasphemy!). It was thanking Kripke for the ride so far and cursing him for the interminable wait. It was communal bliss and suffering and it made the season 2 premiere a red circle on the calendar where no one was allowed to disturb. In short, it was everything you wished for a season finale.
ReplyDelete:O I was already emotionally wasted after going through the possession scene (still the best scene) and I thought I was in the clear. I remember being in shock and sitting there for 5 full minutes just staring at the screen and muttering to myself. My family thought I had really lost it! I don't usually scream at TV shows and I certainly don't gasp so I have trouble catching my breath. It was literally breath-taking to me. I have never had a season finale do that to me, neither before it nor after.
ReplyDeleteI tend to get vegetables thrown at me when I say this but I don't like John. I never did from the beginning and the rest of season 1 just reinforced that. Even season 2 did not make me like him. I do have a better appreciation for him now, but I was happy he wasn't in it very much . I'm also not one of those always wanting John to come back again this season. I love how things have been left..
ReplyDeleteI thought Home was disappointing too. (Not just because of Missouri). I was psyched up for this epic story, but it went downhill almost from the start. Besides the super creepy clapping monkey (seriously, why would anyone give that to a child. You'll scar them for life) and the continuing theme of beware the kitchen sink, it fizzled. The Lampcord of Doom was laughable. Mary showed up but only said a couple of words and flamed out. Granted it took forever to find out what she was apologizing to Sam for, but that was merely irksome at the time - the dangling plot thread. John ticked me off to no end so I couldn't even enjoy hating him. For me all the best parts came before they got to the house, except for the phone call. The revelation of Sam's dreams was the only twist I really liked. For me it's one you have to see because it loosely ties into the mytharc but for the most part, I prefer to skip it.
ReplyDeleteLOL I loved that you said "even season 2 did not make me like him".... dont ask
ReplyDeleteAgree, I LOVE the actor, knew him from *cough* greys anatomy *cough* so I was happy to see him in the premier but the more we learn about him the more i... just dont like him. And then when seasons go on they "bitch" him and it gets anoying cause then I think that he wasnt THAT bad. ehehe.
Only liked him in the flashback. And he def has to stay dead. If we see John again I hope it will be a flash back of the boys when they were younger. Those are my fav scene ever, the christmass one and the ones in high school. AW!!! I would kill for more flashbacks like those.. AND AN AMULET... but lets not get into that ahahhaahha
The amulet is high on my list too. I haven't given up hope on it playing a major role at the end of the season. The high school flashback didn't do much for me but the one at Christmas and the one where I wished some terrible monsters had filleted John were outstanding. I love the WeeWinchesters. They did a great job casting them. Also, now when I see them in other things, I can flashback to the Winchesters. Because really everything leads me back to the Winchesters. 6 Degrees of Dean and Sam!
ReplyDeleteShe can read people so easily. Dean is a snarky guy who has a high opinion of himself in some ways and a low opinion of himself in others... But, by pushing Dean around in a "motherly" but bossy way, I believe she was attempting to cheer Sam up. Sam was still grieving his girlfriend and hearing Mosley threatening to whack Dean with a spoon got a grin out of him and didn't hurt Dean. She could tell that Dean could "take it"... Now, the clean up "command" at the end kind of bothered me... but Sam was slammed around quite a bit. Maybe he was "hurting" physically and MIssouri knew that. I loved her...
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVED her. She was just hilarious and Sam and Dean would never know about the whereabouts of the colt if not for her and her obsessiveness :P And you are so right. She is just like us except like a 1000 times crazier :P
ReplyDeleteLOL. You're her mom. Make her sit in front of the TV and force her to watch it :P
ReplyDeleteIt was pretty funny for me to read Adam's opinion on Meg, while elsewhere we were just discussing that some of us miss the first Meg, comparing her to the one we have now :P
ReplyDeleteI also still hope the amulet's story hasn't ended yet. It just has to come back on Dean's neck, passing over important things like where he got it from and what it was used for (don't wanna spread spoilers for Adam :P), but it made Dean look so hot! (I know I'm shallow, sorry :P).
ReplyDeleteCool review, Adam!
ReplyDeleteIt is true that season one contained mostly the "monster of the week" episodes, with the family storyline being somehow still small and undiscovered. It all just develops in season 2. I must say there are many things I just don't remember from season 1, as I wasn't so much into the show then yet. But I was surprised to see all you had so say about Something Wicked was one sentence. I think the episode went deep into the family issues, into the amazing John-Dean relationship (I mean, as complicated or even sick as it was, as miserable as it left Dean, that relationship owned early Supernatural for me, and that is why I still miss John, even though I didn't even like him). Plus, I loved all the flashbacks episodes, even more than the actual going back in time in later seasons. And I was totally in love with little Dean. Didn't it leave you heartbroken to see that kid facing a monster with a rifle in his hands or hear the immortal "shoot first, ask questions later" from an approximately 10 year old? and the "most important?" "watch out for Sammy", aww that just melts my heart. lol maybe it's just cause I'm a girl, but that episode has woken a LOT of emotions in me.
I agree about the possessed John scene in the finale being epic. It was the scene that made the finale I guess the best of the series (as much as I loved all the other finales). But I disagree on the car crash thing - it was great and unexpected. Come on, didn't you just jump or have a small heart attack when that truck came out of nowhere in the middle of Sam's line? (btw, LOVE the moment when he looks back on poor hurt Dean in the mirror and says "not everything"). Besides, as far as I know you have already seen season 2 premiere - which is also the best season premiere I guess, closely followed by season 4's - so you know what kind of storyline that car crash opened. No car crash, no dying Dean, no need for John to do certain things... right?
I really hope (and I'm quite sure) you'll love season 2. Everyone does. It is when the yellow eyed demon storyline gets juicy. It pretty much opens the show's main storyline leading to a somewhat weak and disappointing season 5.
Jus in Bello was EPIC. So was Mystery Spot and a couple more season 3 episodes. It might not have had great overall storyline, but some episodes in there were just outstanding.
ReplyDeleteOk, how about you as a fan show some excitement that we got another one into the Supernatural world by winning the Best Show Ever competition for our boys? we made a man interested in the show - interested enough to spend some time on analysing every episode and creating a review like this TWICE. We're that awesome :P
ReplyDeleteHaha finally, I was looking forward to your review :P
ReplyDeletePersonally, I agree with mostly everything you said :) There were some really annoying episodes and characters in season 1 but season 2 really developed both Sam and Dean and the whole arc. Supernatural started off really good and it just got better through the seasons.
Can we expect a review for season 2? Just wondering, how long did you take to watch the entire season? Awesome review, I especially loved the charts. And I'm just going to take it as you are a fan of the show now :P
Let me tallk to her, I'm only 19 with no children: aka her "crowd" XD
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but I just think that's a little ridiculous...It's like blaming Becky for saying "Sam you're so FIRM!" And *looks at Dean* "You're not what I pictured..."
ReplyDeletelol Not even Swan Song?
ReplyDeleteThat scene with Sam and the Impala, and Dean's elephant face... O.o
That ruined me!
I couldn't even breathe watching that last scene. I know SPN doesn't do the expected but just seeing that go down the way it did........ I was stunned - - stunned I say.
ReplyDeleteOn some level I really thought they'd manage to wiggle out of actually going through with it..... but no......because this is Supernatural and that's one of the things we love about it.
I didn't have the same feelings for Swan Song as everyone else did. I liked it but I didn't LOVE it. I kept getting distracted by Willow's yellow crayon, because it was essentially the same thing as that Buffy season finale. A little too been there done that for me. Plus, I knew there was a season 6 so I knew it wasn't goodbye.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap girl, calm the hell down. The man is entitled to his opinion, just as you are, but you have no right to bite his head off and post such an irrationally immature comment.
ReplyDeleteDon't pay attention to her. She's acting ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI think that was the first time in the show I noticed how disturbing the violence was getting. Did anyone else notice this? I was told by 2-3 others that they had to change the channel...
ReplyDeleteVery well said Mia
ReplyDelete
