Supernatural - The Missing (Winchester) Brother

I am thoroughly enjoying the arc of Supernatural this season, especially with the turn of events that recently happened. We know who has taken responsibility for bringing Grandpa out of heaven. We know who lays claim to both pulling Sammy from the cage and knowing where his MIA soul is. Answers, we have answers! But the one area we have yet to even have a mention of is what happened to Adam.

Like any true Winchester, Adam's life was not a bed of roses. He had an absent father who dropped in once in a while and a mother who worked long hours just to support them. John's dreams of keeping Adam out of the hunting life and safe were all for nil since the ghouls came after him anyway. Adam and his mom were killed long before Dean and Sam even knew he existed. But the family reunion wasn't going to be over before it began, since the angels sought fit to raise him from the dead to be their perfect Plan B in the whole vessel battle. And so, he was pulled down into the pit along with Lucifer!Sam. While Sam's body is back on Earth, his soul is either still trapped in the cage or waiting in Purgatory until the whole Crowley plan goes as requested. And Adam is...where? That's the big question. Perhaps there are only two options left at this point.

Adam's Soul Is Still In The Cage: This is the saddest option since it means Adam's possibly been tortured for as long as Sam has. Adam is a broken soul, sacrificed for a battle that wasn't even his to begin with. While, if Sammy's soul is right there in the cage with him, it means he's had his big brother along for the ride, it's not necessarily a ride we'd wish anyone to be on.

Michael Put His Soul Back In Heaven Before Taking Over His Body: Not that Michael exuded any kind of compassion in his interactions, but we can hold out hope that he didn't necessarily need Adam sticking around to utilize his body after permission was given. So, it's likely he could have sent Adam's soul straight back to heaven while he took the vessel for a spin.

The bottom line is that I just want some kind of mention of the Winchesters' missing brother. Dean has said time and again how much family means to them. Adam seemed to be just as important to them as any other person that shared their blood, and even a few that became honorary Winchesters along the way. If that still holds true, then why has there been no mention of their little brother so far? Two people jumped into that pit and only one came back. I'm sure the audience would appreciate some acknowledgment of that fact.

  1. I don't think deferring attention to Adam is a very good idea until maybe late this season because that sort've plays on the fears of many fans that it could even further rip apart the 2 main characters on their quest for Sam's soul back. I honestly thought that the title of this article referred to Sam. Didn't even think about Adam. I kinda hate that I just forgot about him like that, but honestly while the writers have handled him overall well, I feel like he is an extraneous character that's been made way too important to things in a way too convenient matter...and while it would be nice to get answers regarding his whereabouts, I would be content with the matter being closed simply via Castiel relaying that he is up in heaven again, where he belongs, or something like that, without actually having to flesh it out any further. In other words: it ISN'T the "big" question as you put it, but simply a loose end that should rightfully be tied, but not necessarily in a way that diverts attention to the impending matters that are happening this season. I mean if they can make it a (DAMN GOOD) twist or have something really good in mind for it, I'm open to the idea, but every episode he's been on (all of 2--both of which he did very well in...) the writers walk the line of jumping the shark and I don't like that...Get what I mean?

  2. As I stated in my article: "The bottom line is that I just want some kind of mention of the Winchesters' missing brother." I don't need Adam to return in the flesh, I just would like one mention, one line, that puts to rest his whereabouts.

  3. Yeah at some point I'd like to know what happened to Adam too. I have wondered about that. That's nothing unusual for me though - I regularly find myself wondering what life is like for people in the aftermath of their encounters with the Winchesters.

I agree that it's not necessary to bring the actual character back - but some kind of 'where is he now' would be good if they could work it in smoothly, without it seeming contrived.

  4. So would I actually! I see Adam as much a Winchester as Sam or Dean, and it would be nice if we could find out what happend to him!
(Seriously, maby just in passing, or on a bill-board, anything really! :D)

  5. I'm hoping that Adam will get some mention once Sam's back to being Sam. I'm counting on the fact that once Dean doesn't have to worry about who he's hunting with and knows that Sam has his soul, he or Sam will be asking about Adam. At this point I will take any closure too--whether it's Cas or Crowley being like, "oh yeah, Adam's ...." though an appearance would be nice (but I'm really not counting on that at all).

  6. Exactly. I mean, they're dealing with alot of stuff right now, but at some point it would be nice if someone would mention Adam. Maybe Cas saying "Adam is safe" or maybe he's still down in the pit and they'll find him at that point (that would make me sad, though).

  7. Yes, someone between heaven and hell, surely they can spare a line to put to rest Adam's whereabouts :)

  8. I think that Adam should come back just to get killed in some heroic way. Though I would like some mention, I don't want just a mention. It would be like baiting the fans if Sam said " I wonder what happened to Adam" while they never mention/see him again.

  9. Poor Adam. He is a Winchester through and through, sacrificing his life repeatedly :)

  11. I am not sure if I like the character of Adam or not. I think he showed his true colors in season 5 during the season finale and that was enough for me. I am just thrilled seeing Sam and Dean every week!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Adam's true colors? He wasn't even Adam in the S5 finale :( Michael was fully in charge.

  13. If Adam's soul is in the cage, it's in there with Lucifer and Michael. If that's the case, I think it's more likely that Crowley has a huge "keep out" or "keep away" sign on the thing. No one is going to want to risk an incident by messing with the people in the cage. We're talking Lucifer and his Archangel brother. They're way to dangerous to screw with.

I'd guess that Adam's soul is safer in the cage with Michael that it would be in Hell's gen-pop.

  14. I don't know...having Michael and Lucifer in an eternal battle with your soul being along for the ride doesn't sound so great to me :(

  15. The way I see it, if the brothers are constantly going at it means that they're to busy with each other to bother with you. If it's one thing that both angels and demons have made clear, especially the more important ones, is that humans are insignificant to them.

  16. I hate the whole Adam concept. If it weren't for the fact that they needed him in season 5, I would have been fine to conveniently forget he ever existed. I hope they never bring him back.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I like that I forgot about him. I hope to continue to do so. I agree that he was a too convenient substitute in season 5. If I didn't respect the Supernatural writers so much, I would be tempted to call him a cop-out. While the episode "Jump the Shark" didn't, any continuation of Adam's storyline just might. I say we leave him the way of Chuck and let fans make up their own minds what happened to him.

    ReplyDelete
  18. You hate Adam? :( I love Adam. I mean, In Jump the Shark he was annoying but he was actually a ghoul. He also was perfect in Point of Know Return, I love that he wasn't all "You're my brother, so I trust you", he reacted understandably and he was a lot like Dean. I think Jake Abel did a very good job.

That said, I hope if they bring him back it's to kill him. He's a loose end, and if there's anything I hate it's a loose end.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hate hate Adam glad he's gone and hoping it stay's that way . Dean and Sam are just fine on there on of course with cas and bobby .

    ReplyDelete
  20. Love him or hate him, he's a loose end that they have yet to acknowledge (though, the way SPN works, they've likely got it worked out in the grand scheme).

  21. I really liked Adam's true arrival in Season Five, because he was useless until then. He became an interesting piece of the puzzle and I hope they can work with him in the future. I think a cool thing to do is use him as leverage this season or in the next... if he's in Hell, the brothers will want him back as much as Sam's soul. Maybe we get to see them fight their way into hell?!? Or, they could simply use him as more leverage for Crowley. Or, if nobody wants him back, they could have him be stuck between Michael and Lucifer forever... not a very pleasing eternity...

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like the idea that Adam will play a part in the evolving arc!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree. Regardless of one's personal opinion of the character, the situation deserves a mention. I don't see how Michael's fellow angels could let an archangel rot in a cage with Lucifer either. Maybe that's part of the reason for the civil war?

    ReplyDelete
  24. What if Adam and Michael, even upon being thrust into the cage, are still one and the same? As in...maybe BECAUSE of the cage they cannot separate? I think once Sam gets his soul back, either he or Crowley will definitely mention something about the cage, and hopefully Adam. If not, no sweat off my back.

    ReplyDelete
  25. But I thought when Dean asked something like "Adam if you're in there I'm sorry" that Michael said "He isn't here." I assumed his soul was heaven. That's good enough for me.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah I wanna know about Adam too lol. And I hate that they dont think about him lol... he is family its DEAN and SAM they live for family lol (well old sammy).. Any way hope we find out something simple like your idea that he is in heaven so they'll be like "oh okay he's good" lol lets not save him and leave him there PLEASE ahahhaa.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You mean the cage melded them? Hmm...that's an interesting theory. If that's the case, though, Sam's soul would be forever bound to Lucifer, too.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I hope that Michael's words did indeed mean that. It's the better option than having him suffer in the cage for over a century.

PS: Thanks for commenting again :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree that they should explain what has happened to Adam if only because its been established how important family is to the Winchesters even if Sam doesnt really care about anybody right now. The only thing that might keep them from addressing this is how Adam left things with them before Michael possessed him. He made it clear he didnt consider them family and didnt care about them. They might not want to open that whole issue up because then they have to deal with what happened to Michael and they might not have figured that out yet.

    ReplyDelete
  30. But sam and dean can not not care about a sibling. It wouldnt work with their personality.
Maybe once sam gets his soul back he'll know adam wasnt in the hole so he is in heaven. Subject closed lol

    ReplyDelete
  31. Just one line, that's all I'm asking for :D Unless Sera has something up her sleeve and Adam is playing a bigger part than we realize.

    ReplyDelete
  32. True, but I don't think they'd just not acknowledge him at all. Just a line in passing would be sufficient, just to tie up the loose end.

    ReplyDelete
  33. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! If she brings him back I will lose faith in her genus (?) LOL One line is perfect ahhaha. Whats the use of an angel if not that LOL

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would not mind finding out what truely happened to Adam. Hopefully his soul did go to Heaven before his body went into the cage. It would be awful if he has been being tortured as well as Sam's soul if it is also still in the cage. I did not mind Adam because I did not think he would really be around the brothers. For his sake I hope he is in Heaven. He got pulled into this by no choice of his own.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I hope he's in heaven, too :( He's fought the good fight long enough.

    ReplyDelete
  36. OMG if they put Adam's whereabouts on a billboard I'll laugh my ass off! XD

    ReplyDelete
  37. I wouldn't mind a mention of Adam being restored to heaven, but I hope never to see him again. This is Sam and Dean's story. Period.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A mention is all I'm asking for ;)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Works for me. :-)

  40. Maybe one of those Missing signs. If seen please call....

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yep, I hate him. I don't have much of an opinion about Jake Abel, but I hate Adam. He was an unneeded waste of valuable time in season 4 in a story that went completely nowhere. I couldn't tell if they were trying to humanize John or trying to highlight the brother issues, but it worked on absolutely no level at all. In season 5 he was a plot contrivance to stopgap the gaping plot hole they created. I don't consider him a Winchester at all. He's just another by-product of John's suckitude. If Adam doesn't consider them family, I don't see why I have to either. Did I think he's reaction was understandable in season 5? Absolutely! Do I understand why the writers and Kripke ever thought John having a second family was a good idea? Not even a tiny bit. It's my least favorite side story of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  42. All of them got pulled into this by no choice of their own. Thanks Mary! Thanks John!

  43. I agree with you kaybee, I believe Michael said Adam's not home right now and to me that meant that Michael released him to go back to heaven... That might have been why Raphael's vessel was drooling in that institution. Maybe they can just send the soul's of their vessels "home" early. I believe that the real Adam never went to the cage... just his body.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Even though you raise some good points and it was nice to read that, I'm going to have to disagree. I don't think Adam is a loose end that they need to go back to at all. He was never an important character. Sure, Michael using him as a vessel was important but to the overall story, so far at least, he was never important. For us to find out what happened to him, whether he comes back or him being mentioned, I think that idea would have to tie into some plot line down the road that would fit into the bigger plot. I for one didn't forget about him like a lot of people and I too have wondered about him, but to be honest I didn't care too much about it because even though it sucks what happened to him, with how his life turned out and may being in the cage, I just never could relate with the character. If they could find a really good way for him to be reintroduced to the story, then I am all for it! But I think the bigger loose end is why weren't Jo and Ellen in Heaven!
Like I said, I enjoyed what you said and you raised good points, I too do that with a lot of my shows : )

    ReplyDelete
  45. The lack of acknowledgement so far leads me to believe that his fate may well fit into the larger storyline that will be revealed later.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Definitely. Personally, I loved his character and Jake Abel, the actor that played him. I would love to know where he is right now and hopefully, he isn't in the pit.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I hope he's not in the pit either :(

    ReplyDelete
  48. The only thing I really wanna know is where is the Colt? Last time we saw it Dean shot Lucifer then got bitch slapped 20 feet into a tree.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Did Bobby shoot Lucifer!Sam with it, before he got his neck snapped? I always assumed that Bobby still had the Colt (if it's not in the trunk of the Impala).

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well i do agree he is a loss end but i don't really like him as an actor . x
