----------
-Ratings Breakdown:
It was another easy Thursday overnight victory for CBS, with a 34 percent advantage over second-place ABC. Next was Fox, which remains on the map thanks to underrated Bones, followed by NBC and The CW.
CBS’ relocated The Big Bang Theory is the show to beat at 8 p.m., with a very healthy 9.3 rating/15 share in the overnights. One year earlier, Survivor: Samoa averaged a 6.3/10 on Nov. 5, 2009. Next was week seven of $#*! My Dad Says at a typical (and also first-place) 7.0/11 at 8:30 p.m. But the retention of 75 percent out of The Big Bang Theory could be better. Here is the seven-week overnight track for $#*! My Dad Says:
$#*! My Dad Says (CBS)
9/23/10: 7.7/12
9/20/10: 6.7/11
10/07/10: 6.3/10
10/14/10: 6.6/10
10/21/10: 7.0/11
10/28/10: 6.8/11
11/04/10: 7.0/11
Next on CBS was veteran CSI at a dominant 9.2/14 in the overnights at 9 p.m., which was equal to one year earlier, followed by The Mentalist at a 9.6/16 at 10 p.m. The Mentalist, once again, was the highest rated show of the evening.
ABC needs to find a permanent Thursday 8 p.m. occupant, with a third-place 3.2/ 5 for a repeat of Grey’s Anatomy no solution. Next was the original installment of Grey’s Anatomy at a second-place 9.0/14 at 9 p.m. (eight percent above one year earlier), followed by Private Practice at an above-average (and second-place) 7.9/13 at 10 p.m. Retention for Private Practice out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Grey’s Anatomy (9.0/14) was an improved 88 percent. Expect a first-place time period finish among adults 18-49 for the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off.
Over at Fox, underrated Bones finished a comfortable second in the overnights at 8 p.m., with a 6.3/10. But lead-out Fringe is lacking at a fourth-place 3.4/ 5 at 9 p.m. Retention for Fringe out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of Bones (6.5/10) was just 52 percent.
NBC’s Community, which just received an order for two additional episodes, remained out of the competitive loop at 8 p.m. with a distant third-place 3.4/ 5. That led into 30 Rock at an also lackluster (and third-place) 3.8/ 6 at 8:30 p.m., followed by The Office (#3: 5.1/ 8), week seven of Outsourced (#3: 3.7/ 6) and The Apprentice (#3: 3.1/ 5) from 9-11 p.m. The Office, as always, will resonate among adults 18-49 and the overnight growth of 34 percent out of 30 Rock is worth positively noting. But the rest of the network’s Thursday night line-up is lacking.
Here is the seven-week overnight track for Outsourced:
Outsourced (NBC)
9/23/10: 5.0/ 8
9/20/10: 4.1/ 6
10/07/10: 3.8/ 6
10/14/10: 3.8/ 6
10/21/10: 3.5/ 5
10/28/10: 3.9/ 6
11/04/10: 3.7/ 6
As for The Apprentice, just what we needed…another son of Donald Trump participating!
The CW closed the night with its combination of The Vampire Diaries (#5: 2.6/ 4), which built by eight percent from one year earlier, and recent entry Nikita (#5: 1.9/ 3). Retention for Nikita out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of The Vampire Diaries (2.6/ 4) was 73 percent. And there you have it…that’s Thursday.

Fringe :(
ReplyDeleteBravoooo for The Mentalist xD
ReplyDeleteI can't speak for The Mentalist (I've heard good things but it's too close to the general cop-show-with-a-twist format for my liking) but CSI? GOD. Aren't people bored with this crap already? How can an original and thought-provoking show like Fringe lose out to this shitty CSI crapfests?
ReplyDeletethe mentalist is pretty good, simon baker is a god haha :) but I absolutely agree about the csi monotony, honestly I even skip over a lot of the case studies for grey's.
ReplyDeleteOn another note the Big Bang Theory is AMAZING!
I am actually a fan of Simon Baker's and always meant to check out The Mentalist... but it was just never high on my list due to it looking like so many other shows (though I've been told it's really not). One slow day I'll get around to watching it!
ReplyDeleteAs for BBT... I watched an episode... I didn't get it. :(
all of us can't be wrong. Perhaps you are
ReplyDeleteAd populum is a logical fallacy, please try again.
ReplyDeleteWtf is wrong with people? How can anyone watch CSI,Grey's,Office over Fringe?I just don't get it..
ReplyDeletecan someone explain to me how the ratings system works? for Outsourced how is a 3.7/6 bad when they had 5.8 viewers??? what does 3.7/6 even mean? I don't get it. Ok, it says Rtg/Shr. so rating out of... what? and what kind of rating is it?! I don't understand!
ReplyDeleteWell, for me, I watch The Office live because no one in my house follows Fringe. I could see CSI being the same since it's much more of an individual episode, but Grey's? I don't understand that one either. I think that's the biggest problems with serials; if someone hasn't watched it then they don't want to be thrown into the middle of a late season. I just hope that FOX lets Fringe finish right. If Prison Break was able to finish with their horrendous ratings at the end, there is no reason not to allow Fringe to do the same.
ReplyDeleteI kind of get it now... still a little fuzzy... thanks for the link though. So let me ask for clarification, so for Outsourced and their 3.7/6. Does this mean that out of the 6% total people watching the show out of all watching tv at the time total, 3.7% watched the show the most at any given time during the show?
ReplyDeleteAmy, check this Wiki article out. It's pretty good at explain all the
ReplyDeletemysteries of the US TV Ratings system.

Well I watch Grey's bc it's awesome unlike Fringe ...
ReplyDeleteSmarts shows die out because smart people are dying out
ReplyDeleteYou said what I was thinking in a much more elegant way! Kudos.
ReplyDeleteLike "M" said, just because a lot of people believe it, doesn't mean it is so.
ReplyDeleteAlso, how can I be wrong? I was asking how a show like that can be watched over another show. I don't comprehend how a question can be wrong.
I know. I don't get it either...
ReplyDeleteI blame the long hiatus. Maybe people didn't know there was a new episode. Lets hope ratings will be back to normal next week. Fringe is the best sci-fi show on TV right now, and there won't be another unless J.J Abrams decides to make another Mystery/Sci-fi show. Only J.J Abrams can create so unique and likeable characters...
ReplyDeletePoor Fringe. It's getting eaten alive this year. Which is a shame, considering it's the best it's ever been. I honestly don't understand why people aren't watching it - it's got all the elements of a "successful" television program. FBI/Crime investigation, romance, humor, science-fiction, likable characters that drive the plot... More people need to jump on the Fringe bandwagon. Especially LOSTies. They'd love this show.
ReplyDeleteThank you! for pointing out how good Bones is and how under appreciated it is.
