-Ratings Breakdown:
It was another easy overnight Monday victory for ABC thanks to…you guessed it…Dancing With the Stars. Comparably, ABC outdelivered second-place CBS by 53 percent. Third overall was Fox, followed by lowly NBC and The CW.
A 90-minute edition of Dancing with the Stars (go Jennifer Grey!) averaged a hefty 14.5 rating/21 share in the overnights from 8-9:30 p.m., building by half-hour as follows:
Dancing with the Stars (ABC)
8:00 p.m.: 13.6/20 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 14.5/21 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 15.3/22 (#1)
Yes, Bristol Palin did improve last night, but she still deserves to go home next. Regardless, most likely to bid adieu tonight is perennially smiling Kyle Massey. If Bristol makes it into the top 2, the validity of this dancing competition will come to question.
Dancing with the Stars led into a repeat of sitcom The Middle, which finished second at 9:30 p.m. with a 6.7/10, followed by Castle at a first-place 7.1/11 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Although Castle dipped to a season-low without the direct lead-in support from Dancing with the Stars, it did build by six percent out of The Middle encore. And it did beat CBS’ competing Hawaii Five-O in the overnights.
CBS has nothing unusual to report with its combination of demo friendly How I Met Your Mother (#2: 6.0/ 9), disappointing Rules of Engagement (#3: 5.1/ 7), standout Two and a Half Men (#2: 9.1/13) and recent 9:30-11 p.m. entries Mike & Molly (#1: 7.8/11) and Hawaii Five-O (#2: 6.9/11). Although Mike & Molly deserves accolades for winning the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, Hawaii Five-O is not the breakout hit the network was hoping for. One year earlier, CSI: Miami was a noticeably stronger option.
Over at Fox, House remains a player at 8 p.m. with a second-place 7.1/10 in the overnights (and an expected first-place finish among adults 18-49). But Lie to Me at 9 p.m. remains nothing more than temporary Monday 9 p.m. time period filler with a third-place 4.1/ 6.
Fourth-place NBC, which just announced a truckload of primetime changes for midseason (see TV Tidbits below), unsuccessfully populated the night with Chuck (#4: 3.4/ 5), The Event (#4: 3.7/ 6), which has all but fizzled since its promising debut, and Chase (#3: 3.5/ 5). The biggest problem with the evening, which will not change in midseason, is the lack of lead-in support from struggling Chuck.
Last, and very least, was CW duo 90210 (#5: 1.7/ 2) and Gossip Girl (#5: 1.6/ 2), which based on the overnights are both “losers.”

ReplyDeleteSo, Hawaii Five-0 isn't a breakout hit, but are there any new CBS shows that are? Other than CSI, H50 is the only thing I watch on that network so I haven't looked at the ratings for other shows. I love H50 and I really hope it sticks around for a good long while.

ReplyDeleteChuck (1.8/5), The Event (1.7/4), Chase (1.2/4). Chuck was NBC's best performer, so how is that "weakest numbers yet"?
Consistently pulls 10 million a week. I know it started with 15 and then went down, but lately it has stayed in the 10 million range. I think it will stick.
ReplyDeleteNCIS is CBS biggest shows this season between 18-20 million a week.
I'm just impressed that whoever writes this thing was able to refrain from his usual "the needs to be canceled Chuck" phrase this week.
ReplyDeleteJay is right. Chuck has never been a star performer of Monday night but has been pulling a consistent audience from week to week since its premiere, which is more than can be said for either the Event or Chase, both which have been losing viewers since their premieres. The guy who writes these recaps is writing two sentences about raw numbers he barely even looks at. Also its fairly inconsequential for NBC to screw with Monday nights. Apparently most of the morons in American prefer to watch Bristol Palin fall on her fat ass while doing the tango instead of quality television. Nothing NBC puts in the Mon. 8pm time slot can really compete.
ReplyDeleteAlso if you look at the table Chuck has only slightly less viewers than the Event but pulls a bigger share of the key ratings demo, so in a way it should almost be even in the table with the Event, and it's clobbering Chase.
