Question of the Day - Do you prefer watching live or DVR?

Nov 29, 2010

Welcome back to the Question of the Day.

Today's Question of the Day comes from Luke .

"Do you prefer watching live or DVR?"

Personally I find myself watching less and less live TV. Some shows like Lost I watched religiously live so that I could dive straight into the discussion and forums right after it at aired. However since Lost ended I no longer have this need.

I prefer to record several episodes of my favourite show and then watch 2-3 episodes back to back with a nice glass of wine. These shows include Dexter, Damages, The Event all of which I enjoy more when I can watch 2-3 episodes without having that feeling " I can't wait for next week" etc.

How about you? Do you find yourself watching less shows live and using the conveniance of recording shows so that you can watch them at your leisure?

Which shows don't you mind recording and which shows do you watch religiously live

  2. I tend to Cuevana my stuff! Especially since Ninjavideo died.... :(

But I probs would DVR. That being said, whilst I've been in America I've been watching Fringe live, in a hope that single handely my watch makes a different :P

  3. DVR, because I usually work when my shows are on. It's nice to skip commercials too. Lost was an exception though. I would call in "sick" just to watch it live. I just couldn't wait when Lost was on.

  4. The shows I really like I prefer watching on DVR: this way I can go back to catch a bit of dialogue or enjoy a great moment of acting, rewatch for interpretation, etc. I only watch "live" shows that I consume and throw away. House used to be VCR/DVR, it's become Live. I watch Community and I DVR BBT. I watch Lie to me and the procedurals whereas I DVR Chuck and Glee.
I also enjoy "mini-marathons" like you describe.
I know I'm far from being alone in that.
Also, I don't skip commercials - most are entertaining and local commercials are necessary to know about sales at Wegman's, Kohl's, or whatever that is not mentioned in national commercials. Plus I like knowing that if a commercial is bad or if I get annoyed, I can ff through it, it's like a new freedom.
And more and more during live watching, since I'm not as invested in the show plus the screen is farther away, I feel freer to talk to others, walk around to make tea, or take a bathroom break. Although I still like watching commercials, the disruption feels different when you watch live.
Oddly, it looks like ad agencies still think that live watching numbers indicate a greater liking for a show but I predict they'll catch on the trend.

  5. It really depends. There are some shows I have to watch live, but others I don't mind watching on DVR. It's nice to fast forward through commercials. (Which accidentally creates a problem when I try to fast forward live TV and can't do it.)

  6. Because I live in Sweden I get my shows another way, but I guess I fit in the DVR category, seeing I don't have any commercials and can pause/fast forward etc. If I had the choice to watch on tv or record it, I would definetly record it because my absolute hatred for commercials and the choice to watch the show when I feel like it.

  7. i do not live in the US of A, but where i am i watch live and dvr. i like to watch more than once. i like to rewind and flashforward and watch certain scenes over and over and over.

  8. DVR. I generally have 3-5 shows I watch each season. And while I watch them quite religiously, I'd never get out of the house if I watched them when they're on. It means being a little behind in discussions, but that's the choice I've made.

  9. Purely DVR. I tend to watch most shows within 24 hours of airing, unless I am real busy or those odd nights when I record 4+ things. Rarely does anything stay on my DVR longer than 3 days. If I don't stay on top of it, my DVR quickly fills up.

  10. I selected "depends on the show" but I usually either watch live or watch via HD download.

  12. I'm not from the US either. So watch my favorites shows the next day online and i wait for the others shows in my county

  13. Depends on the show/my schedule/the network. I almost always watch Modern Family, Community, Fringe, and Sunny live.

I watch The Event, HIMYM, Hawaii 5-O, The Office, and 30 Rock on Hulu/CBS.com the next day since I just can't always inflexibly donate my all that time.

I watch Supernatural the next day, since I am always busy on Friday nights, and Dexter the next day since I don't get Showtime.

  14. Watching Live, partly because I don't have the DVR capabilities, and partly because I don't like waiting til the next day to watch the new episode.

Course that's only with Supernatural and Raising Hope, I don't think I care too much for other shows. xD

  15. Mostly I record - the few shows I watch regularly air way past my bedtime ;) and also I can fast forward the ads. Supernatural is the only one I download (where I live they still haven't aired S5) so it would be completely pointless for me to hang out at SpoilerTV. :( if I didn't.

  16. I prefer watcing DVR'd shows or shows I recorded on SageTV, but I do watch some things live or semi-live. I watch news and sports shows live, because I inevitably will hear a sports score or see it online if I do not watch live. For the shows I truly love I tend to watch semi-live. It is recoding on my DVR or SageTV, but I do not wait for the show to complete. I start watching it 16-18 minutes after it starts. That way the time I waited allows me to bypass commercials and stil lfinish the show at the same time the actual airing is over. Oh, and I also wtach live for most cable series on HBO or SHO if I am home.

  17. I love Raising Hope. It's my favorite new show. Whenever I've had a bad day, I watch it and laugh my way through my irritation.

Of course I watch Supernatural "live" whenever I can. Unfortunately this week I have a commitment I can't rearrange like I normally do. It will be the first time I have missed SPN live in 3 years. Bad Friday move! I don't have a DVR but I record the shows I really like so that I can rewatch them. Without TiVo I tend to watch TV via the networks online.

  18. Depend on Show and schedule

  19. Raising Hope is so awesome. >U> <3 PRIVATE HELL.

    Awwee that sucks. D:
Hehe, yeah I watch them online sometimes too. >W< And give the link out to let friends of mine who haven't seen 'em yet watch it, too. 8D

  20. I have no choice but to watch live. I don't have DVR (or PVR if you are in Canada). And not every show is available online.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I always watch on DVR. Why would I want to watch commercials? And when my special show is on, like PRISON BREAK, I like to turn off the lights, volume to the end, be alone and watch the awesomeness!

    ReplyDelete
  22. ...so I'm not the only one who does that! I've gotten so used to being able to pause and fastforward that one day while listening to the radio in my car, I found myself feeling around the controls looking for a fastforward button when the radio commercials started. I felt so stupid when I realized what I was doing.

  23. sometimes I am watching something on my DVR and a weather alert pops up and I forget for a moment that it isn't live and find my self saying stuff like, "Thunderstorms? That's bullshit, we just had one, and besides it's sunny right now!" Then when I realize I'm an idiot (wife doesn't hesitate to point it out) I have to smack myself in the face.
