The Mentalist - Pruitt Taylor Vince joins cast

Nov 21, 2010

With CBI rocked by a violent Red John-related death on last night's episode of The Mentalist, Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) will now have to contend with the possibility that one of his trusted teammates had a hand in the murder. Enter Special Agent J.J. Laroche (Murder One Emmy winner Pruitt Taylor Vince), who arrives December 9 to launch an investigation into suspects Rigsby (Owain Yeoman), Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) and Cho (Tim Kang).

Beginning in January, "each will fall under suspicion and be looked at during the course of various episodes," teases executive producer Tom Szentgyorgyi. The intense probing will uncover secrets about the team and threaten to destroy the Rigsby/Cho/Van Pelt dynamic.

Will one of the three be found guilty of the murder — and have ties to Red John? "I can neither confirm nor deny — I can't even approach that," says Szentgyorgyi. But he does reveal, "In 2011, the investigation will take a startling turn and the team will change dramatically."

  2. You know what? My first thought had been no, no way you can't do that. Now I'm kinda like.. Hmm could be interesting if one of them turned out to be helping Red John. Then I thought well which one? Definitely not Cho 'cause he's just amazing so if it's one of the other two I'll be shocked but not grievously upset. However, if the show is supposed to "threaten to destroy the Rigsby/Cho/Van Pelt dynamic." I feel they really need to follow through and have Rigsby or Van Pelt turn out to be an accomplice. Sorry Grigsby fans..

  3. I guess it's a misdirect. I doubt they'll change the team dynamic. It's probably Hightower, the one no one suspects.

  4. a lot of people don't expect lisbon as well i think, but hopefully it's not her..

  5. Naa....she's the leading female, they won't risk to change the show that dramatically.

  6. Well, the article says they are going to be suspects and that their dynamic will change dramatically. But that doesn't mean that any of them must be necessarily one of RJ's accomplices.
I guess we'll have to wait and see.

  7. Hold the bus a minute... I thought the investigator was looking into the whole CBI and this article says it's either Cho, Rigsby or Van Pelt? If it is any of those three, the revelation why would be a shocker as each of them look up to Jane in their various ways.

  8. I sort of think it might be one of Lisbon's brothers.

  9. I've long had wondered if one of the CBI wasn't involved or even Red Jane himself. They really haven't done a lot with Cho this season so that's possible. Or like someone mentioned the new boss.

I wouldn't even be totally shocked when all is said and done if Jane ends up being Red John in some split personality thing or something. And yes I know I'm going to get pummeled for that theory, lol.

  10. Red Moon was really a pleasant surprise. I did not like any of the Bruno Heller written episodes last season, but this one was huge! There were soooo many twists. It was a classic Mentalist episode. I practically froze when the guy said 'tyger tyger' before dying (the lines from the William Blake poem narrated to Patrick by Red John). Obviously he knows something about Red John. But who would kill him in that fashion, the most brutal way possible. It could be Red John or a second accomplice. We all know by now that he won't let anyone get even close to finding out any detail about him.

How do these serial killer know each other? Is there an annual Serial Killer Convention or something? :P :D

  11. My guess is that Red John is not only one person but a group of people teamed up under one leadership, and they have one accomplice inside the CBI. Otherwise there's no way Rebecca (Bosco's secretary) or Todd could have been killed inside the headquarters. But I don't really want to venture a guess whether the insider is someone from the team. It would be kind of sad to see one of them go down that way

  12. Yeah. When I saw His Red Right Hand, I thought that she may have not been approached directly by Red John, instead, she was probably recruited by an already existing accomplice. He couldn't have evaded the police for so long without having someone on the inside who was involved in the case (before Bosco and his unit picked up the case). Plus, we can remember season one where Red John hacked into CBI's secure network to give them information; it all leads us to think there is another mole inside CBI, someone from the beginning.

As you said, it's hard to guess who it is, it can be anyone.

  13. What's with this CBI Ron? I always found him a bit suspicious...

  14. i agree. i haven't been watching much this season (this show doesn't do as well with keeping me interested anymore, or with keeping the main arch intertwined within the rest of the show, as the awesome "life" was good at), but i'm glad i watched that episode; it was the first episode in a long while that i really enjoyed. finally, finally, dark and angry jane reappears (there's only so much mopey and/or goofy jane i can stomach)! it was an awesome episode--if only that kind of episode would continue...oh well. probably not.

anyway, i don't think any of the team is going to be involved with red john. in my opinion this show would have to go a lot darker than it currently dares to go to pull that off. instead i feel that this whole suspecting the team (sans lisbon, i guess?) is just a way to go deeper into the side characters and their pasts.

  15. I'm thinking it could be VanPelt, altho' it could first look like Rigsby (doesn't his background include a close relationship with arson . . .?) They've kind of painted themselves into a corner with the Rigsby-Van Pelt "they can't date" thing, so one is expendable. And if Van Pelt (the RED-head) is a rookie, she could've ben sent (maybe?) by Red john when Jane joined the CBI . . . Nothing against the character or the actor, I just think that's the most plausible, workable "shocker."

  16. I think they may have to go that dark -- to getting rid of one of the characters -- to fulfill the promise of a shocker development that fundamentally changes the team dynamic. In that case, my guess is that it's Van Pelt -- aside from the the obvious hair-color clue (which is really too much, but . . .), she is the "rookie" and (unless my historical timing is way off) could have been sent to the unit by Red John when Jane became involved with the CBI. As an added angst-producing measure, she could set up Rigsby (doesn't he have some familiarity with arson in his past?) -- because if she really is the Red John plant, she'd ultimately be heartless or else so driven by her obsession she wouldn't think twice about leading him on and then sacrificing him. All to hurt Jane.

Just a theory. Nothing against the character or the actress, I just think that'd be the most satisfying way to move the show along.

  17. Van Pelt came at least one year after Jane started working with the CBI. In episode 3.08, they mentioned a case "three years before" in which he had been involved, whereas Van Pelt started working just two years ago, exactly at the beginning of the series ("the new addition to the team", Jane called her in the Pilot).

But you have a point there, I've always thought about Van Pelt and her red hair... a big coincidence, if you ask me.

  18. Whoops, my bad re: the "duplicate" post -- I didn't think the first one had gone through . . . and clearly I wanted to make my point ;)
