I'm about to date myself here, but I've liked Annette O'Toole since she starred in USA's short-lived, underappreciated series The Huntress. She's another one of those people that I may not expressly be a fan of, but when I see their name in the credits, I'm interested. Tonight, she guests on Lie To Me as a woman with Alzheimer's who believes someone is out to kill her. Cal being Cal, he believes her, once again leaping first, and looking second. You can read the full review here. Full show coverage is available in the Lie To Me category.

This always seems awful; with a great lead in like House, people would rather change the channel to watch something else instead of L2M! Poll who likes a nicer Lightman vs a hard a** Lightman and write/direct accordingly. 1) Hard a** Lightman gets no where with Charlie. 2) Nicer Lightman gets answers from Charlie. Why no scenes of Lightman shirtless, like shaving, for example. Sex Sells! Even Hugh Laurie is shirtless sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI think it's an interesting grey area. Some people like the more aggressive behavior; others find it off-putting. It's very hard to find the balance between the two, because the character is an antihero yet you don't want to make him completely unlikeable.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to disagree with you on the second point, though. I don't care about sex on TV. What I'm interested in is good plot and strong characters.
I agree with your disagreement about sex on TV to a point. I don't need to see people in bed or or shirtless or even kissing. There is also the point that the average American woman is less visual in that department than the average American male. However, there is a lot of "sex" that is almost subliminal. Just no room here to discuss it. I will give you this fact though: When trying to save "Wild, Wild West" years ago when the ratings dropped, Robert Conrad took his shirt off a couple times an episode for a few episodes and everything was fine.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree on your other point; very grey area. I expected more of an intellectual Lightman, despite his "past," because of Season 1 and the 1st 4 episodes of Season 2. He is now also DOCTOR (PhD) Lightman. My predjudice doesn't let me see that much tough guy attitude from a sort of intellectual.
