In ‘Finish What We Started’ we see Savannah turn on Marti and return home after Marti and Dan’s past was revealed.‘Finish What We Started’ yet again felt like another filler episode for the freshman show. Savannah returns home after last week’s over-dramatic ending to find that her sister, Charlotte, is pregnant and her parents are unaware. I enjoyed this twist to the show, it was something I wasn’t expecting (probably the first thing so far) and has the potential to be a very good story line in the show.
Seeing Charlotte and Savannah reconnect was really nice even though I was a little confused as to why Savannah would return home? The writers have made us believe this is the last place she would ever want to be and that her and her mum do not have a good relationship. Yet, in this episode, her mum was the first person she turned too for support.
I was very shocked that Savannah agreed to cheer for the Cyclones to help them get their sponsor for nationals. As close as her and her sister were this episode, it still seemed strange considering how passionate she is about the Hellcats. It will be interesting to see if the writers have anything planned for this, maybe someone spotted her? I can’t imagine the Hellcats being impressed by this.
Marti and Dan really annoyed me this episode. Seeing them kiss after Dan was upset about Savannah and Marti was so annoyed at Lewis it just didn’t make much sense. I think the writers went a bit too quick with this love triangle. It would have been nicer to see Savannah and Dan grow more as a couple rather than just a couple of episodes. Unfortunately, I don’t like Marti enough to feel sorry for her, maybe if we had this twist later in the season, when we know all the characters much better, the storyline would have been more effective?
Overall, the episode was a bit better than last week’s but I still don’t understand what the writers are trying to do. Do they want us to hate Marti? That’s the impression I got this episode. Savannah did over react last week, Marti and Dan’s relationship was in the past and that was acceptable, but now, they kiss again and I now don’t know my feelings about Marti. I seem to dislike her more and more every week and the more I dislike her, the less I enjoy the show.
Thoughts?

I don't dislike her at all. There are things about her that rub me the wrong way, but as a character I think she's very well rounded. She's a flawed human being, but that's something I connect with. l think she is well-intentioned, she's not purposefully devious except when it comes to her law case, but perhaps a bit more self-serving than she lets herself think socially as well as professionally. Again, I can relate to that. How many times have you convinced yourself you were doing the 'right thing' for a friend, only to realize later, or not admit to yourself then that your behavior wasn't as altruistic as you'd have liked to believed. I love seeing realistically flawed female characters in lead roles! Or at all. Usually we're shown as such stereotypes, especially in shows like this one. If you watch Greek I think Casey is another great example. We don't like her much the first few episodes, the show started off focusing more on Rusty with Casey as his very popular, slightly bitchy, slightly air-headed older sister. The show has completely morphed into centering on Casey now though, and I think it's because their high school, college and post college age viewers found that her generally good, but honestly flawed personality struck a cord with them. I have been in both the latter two groups over the course of this show's run, and I know it did with me.
ReplyDeleteIs Casey my favorite character on Greek? No. Close, but I'd say Cappie & Dale, and more recently Katherine (hilarious.) Is Marti my favorite on Hellcats? No. I'd say that would be coach (sooo sexy), or Alice (she's wonderfully bitchy.) Do still I find myself rooting for them, even when I disagree with their actions? Yes, because I want to see how the characters learn and grow from their mistakes (or don't.) Isn't that what makes great drama? I think so!
Happy to see someone blogging about Hellcats though! I think it's a great new show, and as a dramtist I think the college years, life, society, etc, are such an untapped source. High school is so over done, and with every new high school show or movie I see I feel it's more and more ridiculous to see those characters with such mature, adult situations and reactions/insights. In reality teens are a LOT dumber. I feel like college is the new medium for coming of age shows. It can literally show people growing out of childhood and into adulthood, whereas high school shows people growing out of childhood into, oh wait, some more childhood.
Anyway that's my 10 cents. :)
Oh! But I do absolutely agree that the plot twist would have been more effective later on. They should have had some frustration on Dan's part with Savannah not sleeping with him, (going from a player, to attempting to monogamous for the first time, only to find that meant you had to be... celibate? That would drive me nuts.) I mean, at least A LITTLE. No one is that perfect. It would have meant more if we saw her resist, and hold out, and then finally decide that she truly loved Dan and that this is what she wanted, she seems like she wouldn't have sex unless she was IN LOVE, and THEN have her amp herself up for it, I mean really be ready only to find that Marti and Dan had a past. And we would have seen some more tension between Dan and Marti for longer than, say, only even introduced to us in the last 10 minutes of the episode we're currently watching. So yeah, spot on there. Oh well, I'm interested to see where they take it!
ReplyDeleteI don't entirely agree with this review. I was far more annoyed with Savannah and Lewis. Savannah acted like a bitch after finding out about the past relationship, then Lewis got all weird about it. Nevermind the fact that his previous girlfriend is not only on the team, but also not on the best of terms with Marti. I remember him being extremely vague about his previous relationship, so it baffles me as to why he thinks she should tell him everything.
ReplyDeleteI can't really blame Marti and Dan for kissing. Their significant others were off pouting about something that isn't their business in the first place, and these two have a history. It sounds like things ended rather abruptly between the two, so it stands to reason that some feelings would remain.
It was incredibly annoying that Marti and Dan didn't stand up for themselves, they just apologized for something that didn't require an apology at all, and acted like they had done something wrong by not telling people about it. Are we in some alternate reality where talking about your past sexual relationships with a significant other you've only been dating for a short time is a good idea?
I have to stick behind Marti and Dan on this one. Savannah totally overreacted and Lewis switched from loyal boyfriend to jealous jerk in the blink of an eye.
All the characters annoyed me this episode but I don't want to be too negative :P Like you say, and as I said, Savannah was very over-dramatic about what happened which wasn't needed and fair enough Marti and Dan don't need to apologise, it's history ..... but then they kissed?
ReplyDeleteI'm just not too clear about what point the writers were trying to make that is all.
I agree with what you said about Marti. The issue I have is originally I really liked Marti, but each week I seem to be disliking her more and more. The writers made Savannah out to be innocent in all of this so it almost felt for me that we were being forced to dislike Marti? (I'm probably looking way too into this, Hellcats is the least confusing show I watch so I think I just try and make it confusing for myself lol)
ReplyDeleteIt's not that Marti isn't perfect, the flawed characters are usually the ones I like in a show, I like that they have a complicated history and have made plenty of mistakes, it makes them more real. But I just feel with Marti the writers have moved way too fast with it all and they haven't given the audience enough time to connect properly with the characters for a storyline like this.
I totally agree i feel Marti and Dan like what'?? For me its more like brother and sister, than like a couple....and ok i think they dont have to apologize for had history but really!!! marti i dont feel really sorry for her! and savanah its right she dont have more friends... only dan and her mum!; its ok savana over react... they lie for nothing.... savana becareful u sleep with the enemy lol!
ReplyDeleteAnd Marti ur "friend" (dan) finally start a relationship, and u destroyed! u r not really a good friend....
I think Marti should have told Savannah, but then that wouldn't have made very good TV haha :P We all have flaws, and they shouldn't have to apologise. It was in the past, if they both thought that they no longer had feelings then they shouldn't need to tell Savannah and Lewis, but then they kissed again? It just changed my feelings towards the storyline.
ReplyDeleteIm really starting to really really really dislike Martie
