What has happened to Dexter this season?
"Circle Us" was a little more exciting than previous episodes but it still lacked in what Dexter used to be so good at.
In the episode, Lumen and Dexter started to work together, Quinn's private investigator is following Dexter and has seen him with Lumen and we learnt a little bit more about the men behind the women in the barrels! We discovered that Jordan Chase and Cole are connected to the murders after a car crash revealing the bodies in the barrels.
I'm not sure what I think about this storyline. I'm glad we have moved a step ahead in discovering whose behind the killings, but I want to go deeper than that like Dexter has done in the past. All we know at the minute is that women were tortured, killed then placed in barrels. This storyline has a lot of potential and I am expecting a big twist to appear very soon (I hope anyway) which will take us deeper into the mystery.
There was an exciting scene involving Quinn, Debra and Maria. They were trying to catch the Fuentes brothers and this went horribly wrong for the team when the girl they were using to get information got shot. As exciting as this scene was, I'm not sure I was actually that interested in it and that storyline in general. It seemed a bit random. I was hoping the writers would strip everything away this season and focus on Dexter after the death of Rita.
Dexter seems to be breaking Harry's code in every single way possible at the minute. He has let Lumen get more close to him than Rita ever was. She knows his darkest secret. I don't really feel the connection between Dexter and Lumen. She is yet to grow on me. At the minute, I find she is getting in the way of Dexter and his work. Again, I am thinking a big twist will appear with her and it will be interesting to see if her or Quinn end up in the same situation as Doakes, let's hope it's not too predictable!
Overall, the episode lacked depth and suspense for me but still kept me interested. It felt a little bit of a 'filler' episode. I want the writers to strip everything else away now and focus on Dexter and the mystery behind the barrels. I'm also hoping for a pretty shocking twist to appear very very soon. This season is starting to become slow so let's hope it picks up in the back half and we actually get to see Dexter fulfil his need to kill!
Thoughts?

Worst part was Dexter starting at 9:03 and ending at 9:47 after only getting a 50 minute episode last week. Good review but I thought the big reveal about Jordan and Cole was a nice slightly surprise "twist". This show still has not let me down, *knock on wood... sure would be nice if we got at least 55 minute episodes from a "premium channel", however.
ReplyDeleteC'mon now. It was one episode. Is it really such a big deal that it needs posting in two different topics? This isn't anything new or out of the ordinary. Other premium cable shows like The Sopranos, True Blood, Spartacus, and Big Love have done the same thing.
ReplyDeleteThe beauty of a premium cable drama is that they can tell the exact story they want to, without time constraints. That way, they don't have to add empty filler (or make unnecessary edits) to the show just to conform the program to some network template.
It could've been worse, they could've filled up the rest of the time with more Angel/La Guerta tedium.
ReplyDeleteI like the LaGuerta in hot water part of it. I can't say the same for mopey Angel. That guy is turning into Eeyore.
ReplyDeleteI meant their relationship.
ReplyDeleteI like that she's in hot water too though.
