Community: 'Aerodynamics of Gender'; Double bounce me!

I don't know what it was, but I had a bad feeling about this episode of 'Community' from the first two minutes. Call it a sixth sense. But I was right - 'Aerodynamics of Gender' was the first episode of 'Community' I didn't like in possibly the show's history. I don't know whether I just didn't get the reference, or if there wasn't a reference to get, but all of the secret trampoline scenes just didn't work. I mean, I laughed at them, but only really because I didn't know what I was supposed to be laughing at.

'Community' works best when it defies the stereotypes in popular culture, and here there was a fantastic opportunity to throw a curveball into the tried and tested 'Mean Girls' story. So I was disappointed when it turned out that the story resolved itself exactly as I had imagined it would - with the girls getting high on power and Abed bringing them down. The robocop references were kind of clever, and I'm interested in going back and looking at all the Simpsons-style freeze frame moments in the Abed-vision. However, I am very glad they didn't choose to over-use Hilary Duff, who in large doses is massively annoying. They got it just right, I think.

Elsewhere, it's a shame Chang isn't really being given anything to do right now other than make jokes in the background or taunt people. He's had a few moments this season, like the pop-and-lock-athon, but I'm starting to miss Chang the butthole teacher guy.

But if nothing else, it was nice to have a follow up to 'Troy and Abed in the Morning', this time with a very confused Star-burns. I love Star-burns.

What did everyone else think?

  1. The reference was from the Secret Garden. I liked the episode.

  2. I actually loved the trampoline storyline. As for the 'mean girls' storyline, it was probably best to not have a curveball ending. I can't imagine that there would be alot of crossover in the community fanbase and people who watch things like mean girls (I'm sure there are some, but not alot) and so I think if they did do a twist ending, it would have been lost on the majority of the audience.

  3. Mean Girls was actually a very clever film with a lot of similar humor to Community and aimed at the age group that would currently be interested in Community, so you'd be surprised!

  4. I was hoping for someone to get hit by a bus.
I liked the twist of Troy and Jeff's story. It was hilarious. "It's going to be a maze."
