Thanks to DarthLocke and JFSawyer for the heads up.

Lost alum Jorge Garcia has been cast in J.J. Abrams' Fox drama Alcatraz, reports Deadline.

The hush-hush storyline line focuses on mysteries involving the infamous, hard-time federal penitentiary at Alcatraz, which closed nearly a half-century ago.

The 37-year-old Garcia, who will play Alcatraz expert Diego Soto, is best known for his role as Hugo "Hurley" Reyes on Abrams' ABC drama Lost.

What do you think of the casting?

  1. DarthLocke: I think this is great news! And I agree with Varga! --Also I hear part of the plot revolves around prisoners that escaped and suddenly emerge in society and the FBI is trying to track them down while discovering the mysteries of Alcatraz. So in that respect it's like talking the story of Edward Mars on the hunt for his Island criminal(s) and creating a series! (Would be even better if EL would get a role too!)

  2. Darthlocke: Just to add one last thing...I am curious if some of the prisoners/guards are going to look like they haven't aged in 30 years...

The reason I say this is because one of my favorite books and film (The Star Rover by Jack London/The Jacket-film) are about a prisoner who is able to time travel...in The novel, he goes back in time and learns he has past lives...in the film the character is in a mental institution instead and travels to the future so he can change the past...in both cases the protagonist was in a straight jacket, abused, and given drugs and this is what starts the time traveling...

  3. This project sounds very interesting. I was hoping that Jorge would get something other than a comedy. Don't get me wrong, he would excel at that, but his acting range extends way past comedy.

  4. I agree completely! While early on Hurley was as nothing more than comedic relief, he became the emotional core of the show in later seasons. He has an almost slurred way of stating things that makes him instantly relatable and likable. He was at his best when very serious things happened to him and his friends (i.e. when Libby, Charlie, Jin, Sun, and Jack died) and it was his reaction to things that made us as fans even more upset.

  5. I find it funny that when LOST finished I thought Jorge Garcia was the one cast member I'd see the least from. Since then he's filmed a Glee Song, Mr. Sunshine, HIMYM and now a regular role in this.
Matthew Fox, where are you? :P

The project sounds pretty cool I have to say! I'm onboard!

  6. I think I remember that Fox said he doesn't want to do TV anymore. He's spent a lot of years doing Party Of Five and then Lost, so he's done with it.
Kind of expected to see Garcia around, I was pretty sure he would join some sitcom. He definitely has a comedic talent. Was surprised to see him joining another drama show.

  7. He also did "Haunted," which was cancelled way too soon.

  8. Darthlocke: I am hoping we see more Abrams alumni...I would be happy if Bradley Cooper and Evangeline Lilly would be FBI agents....I would also love to see David Anders, Victor Garber, Rachel Nichols, Rebecca Madder, Emily De Raven, Naveen Andrews, Marc Menard, Balthazar Getty, and now that Undercovers seems 'under', Carter Maclntyre !

Ok really anyone from Abrams and Co would be excellent!!

  9. I think Alcatraz is also on an island. So, more similarities.
