2010 Character Competition - The Winner + Final Words

4 Nov 2010

We have our winner, the 2010 SpoilerTV Character Competition is over.
And the Winner is:

Yes, LOST's Jack Shephard, played marvellously by Matthew Fox has claimed the crown for 2010, a fitting tribute that the show which without, SpoilerTV would probably not exist, should claim the Character Competition in it's final year.
Also, in the users competition, the winner of the bracket guessing the final two as well as the winner, is Iveta "ivetka.a" Palkova with 120 points, beating Marcus ""TongueChamp"" A by 4 points to claim the prize. I will double check with Dark on how you get the prize, but well done, and I or Dark himself will help you out. :) Surprisingly for me, the Jack win which I predicted grabbed me 11th place, on 99 points. If only Greg House had performed better :P You can check where you finished here: http://www.dawgsled.com/darkufo/welcome.asp

Our 2010 Winners are:
Show - Supernatural
Character - Jack Shephard (LOST)

I know it has been an a topsy turvy couple of inaugural competitions which I and Dark have put together, what with the infamous Vampire Diaries/Smallville dramas of the Show Competition Quarter Final, and the River Tam debacle as we neared the end of the Character Competition, but I have to say overall it's been a load of fun, I've got to know a huge amount of people, and discuss shows and characters till the cows came home, and I can confirm I will be back next year, that's 2011 to carry out the second SpoilerTV Show and Character Competitions. I already have some ideas to spread the field and try to make especially the characters competition less 'One Show Heavy' and hopefully to give some of the smaller shows more of a presence in the competitions.
Also, I hope to have a couple of smaller competitions in between, which won't be around straight away, I'm going to focus on watching and reviewing some TV for a bit, and you will be able to find me around the House and Fringe sections of the site, as well as my Supernatural Season Reviews as I plough through the show, the first season post coming within the next week.

We of course owe a thanks to DarkUFO, the man who runs the site and keeps the community so friendly and fun. Without him we wouldn't have this place to enjoy TV how we want.

  1. Thanks for joining in the Competition. I don't ask for much, but if you enjoyed the Competition, then you could Like this comment :)

Also, comment away with any feedback and ideas for the future competitions :)

  2. I'm surprised some characters like the Winchester brothers and Mulder (Scully even) didn't make it futher. I'd also have liked to have seen at least one of Amy Acker's in there... but, I'm just happy Clark Kent didn't win. When it comes to character (even though I don't like him), Jack is the better of the two.

Thanks for the competition, Adam. I've had some laughs.

  3. maybe next time (or a different comp. entirely) there can be an inclusion of older shows/characters such as I Love Lucy's Lucy or The Flintstones Fred. I think that would be neat. Or maybe have different quarters of the bracket with different genres/decades. I don't know, i'm just throwing ideas out there.

  4. I like the idea of having 2 different show competitions, one for shows still airing and one for cancelled shows. It gets us through more of the hiatus. :-) Might be fun for characters too.

Thanks for all your hard work Adam. It has been fun! I can't wait to hear what you thought of Supernatural season 1.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I'm fully intending on separating Current and Finished Shows and/or Characters next year. Just need to work out the details :)

Think you've been one of the most prolific commenters in the competitions, so thanks! :) What did you get with your Prize voucher from last month? :P

  6. Haha, no way! I placed 7th in the cup and I didn't even check my brackets throughout the competition. I was way off of my final prediction though and I never would have thought Clark would get this far. I had the two Jack's (Shephard and Bauer) squaring off with Jack Shephard taking the crown.

Thanks a lot for the competition Adam. It's been a great time!

  7. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Great endeavor, guys! Can't wait till next year!

  8. Thanks for everything, Adam. See you around the site.

  9. Thanks Adam. I haven't always commented through the competition, but I've voted a few times, and always read through the comments.

Almost scared to say it here but I don't watch much tv * ducks for cover* . However there are definitely some shows I will take a look at after this.

I really appreciate the time and effort you've put in over the past weeks, and there were times when it must have been difficult to carry on.

Really looking forward to your Supernatural Season Reviews. You ROCK, as does Spoilertv ;)))

  10. Clark Kent totally deserved to win. He is more of a man than Jack will ever be. Tom Welling is an outstanding actor and is highly underrated because Smallville is broadcast on the crappiest channel known to man.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Any chance that we could have a best movie and best character from a movie competition?:P

    ReplyDelete
  12. Massive thanks again Adam for running a great comp, despite the hiccups ;)

Having run these for several years over at DarkUFO I know just how much time and effort is involved.

I also think we learned a lot and this will help making next years cups even better.

    ReplyDelete
  13. D'aww, that's why we all have our own wittle opinions now, isn't it?

Crappiest Network + Crappiest Show = Crapfest.

    IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ew! You're not one of those people who forsakes TV for a life are you?

    I've heard of your kind.

    ReplyDelete
  15. WELL.

I learned I should be writing a sitcom.

I'll call it Two And A Half Men and it's purpose will be to painfully kill people with bad jokes and horrible acting.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi :)

I'm glad that Jack won this comp :)

I don't wanna insult/offend anyone but it's totally my honest opinion.

I don't know how this was even close. Clark/smallville is a totally wooden charactor/show and i really don't see much of a personality in him/it. The show is completely superficial, along with the majority of the CW shows.

Supernatural is the great exception (why is it on the CW *scratches head* )

Now, i do watch some of the CW's other shows, But's it's more.... MEH.

I guess i like the deeper stuff, Ya know.... the complexities of a show/charactors, and i really don't see that in smallville/clark.

Now as for Lost.... I know some people love/hate/dispise Jack/show. and the head melting stuff it delivered.

I loved it/him. and that's why i feel he deserved his win. He was deep/complex. and the show and him were amazing to watch... I guess i'm in the minority that loved the ending. What the show didn't give me... i was able to join the dots myself. If you get really into the spiritual elements... it really is easy/satisfying.

So... yeah... got a bit off track there *smacks brain*

When a show/charactor can make me cry like a toddler having a tantrum... It ranks as super special to me.

So... got that with Jack/Lost and didn't get it with Clark/Smallville. hence my decision.

Now Clark/Smallville lovers... don't all murder me at once... line up first :)

this was just MHO - No insult/offense was meant, so. Sorry in Advance... Sorry in hindsight.... and just... Sorry <3

  17. Ooh. I like that idea.

River Tam could be disqualified all over again!

  18. You opinions have cut like a knife.

  22. I wanna be... your underwear.

    ReplyDelete
  23. That sitcom's not gonna write itself you know. Better get to it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't how else to say it but you're adorable. So you're glad tha Jack won because you like him? I'm shocked. How can that be? How can anybody like/love/dislike/hate a character? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks for two fantastic competitions. I really loved the TV show competition. The hellatus (Supernatural term) was over so fast thanks to all the great discussions in the comment sections. There were a couple of great summer shows but nothing that has me really involved so discussing TV shows with other fans was absolutely awesome. My favorite part was learning about new old TV shows and reading other fans argumens why a show is their favorite.
The character competition was great as well but I have to confess when the season started and there were new episodes to watch, I forgot to come back and check the polls, the comments etc. So my suggestion would be to find a better time for the character competition. Maybe the TV show competition during summer and the character competition during winter hiatus with smaller competitions in between.

I really look forward to your Supernatural reviews. I always find it interesting how new fans experience the show now that they can watch 5 seasons on dvd without the weakly interruption.

  26. GO CLARK KENT! And why is Hungry Emo always a douche to everyone?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Not to *everyone.*

    Just Smallville fans. Bahaha. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm thinking, a take on the Superman mythos, but there's a twist...

People could watch it without cringing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm not even gonna look at my brackets. I was gone a LONG time ago! This tourney did not turn out how I thought it would.

    ReplyDelete
  30. You're so mean *hug* Don't ever change!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Like both characters, but voted Jack.. To develop a character like that in 6 years is amazing.. Yes, yes Clark is a very developed character, but SV's writers had a 100 year template to work and base his character on from comics, movies, prior TV series, cartoons etc.. Smallville writers knew what they had and only had to add their tweaks.. As where Lost made up the Jack character that will live on in TV history now, in a matter of a short 6 TV seasons.. Hence i voted Jack.. But a real tough one..

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not to mention Jack was supposed to be killed off in the pilot episode. I'm not exactly a huge fan of his, but it's to the writers' credit that he evolved so much, from a one-off character to the centerpiece of the entire show.

    ReplyDelete
  33. i was wondering how i managed to see you all over this site... although by all over i may or may not just be talking about supernatural O.o

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ok, Hungry Emo this is where I step in...Smallville was my favorite show for 4 years. If I wasn't watching Smallville, I wouldn't have seen the commercials for the pilot of Supernatural, and then I wouldn't have known about my current favorite show. It's gone up and down in the quality department, but I've stayed with this show for 10 years and I do believe that it is quite underrated. For you to say you insult Smallville fans, you insult me. I don't think SV is that amazing of a show, but I do like it, and it has been one of my overall favorites since I was 10 years old. Quit being a "douche" as HiddenBlurEl says. I usually appreciate your harsh sense of humor but this was a big deal to a lot of SV fans (not really me but whatever) so don't piss on it.

Besides, the crappiest show on the CW IS NOT Smallville. There's about 4-5 canndidates that come before Smallville...

    ReplyDelete
  35. *cough* someone beat you to that punch. What about Mike & Molly, the "heartwarming" make-jokes-about-fat-people show? Or Outsourced? or a show about stupid shit that a random dad says?

Oh crap, those have been taken too.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Even as a fan of Smallville I couldn't believe Clark made it into the competition...For the reasons you stated...I found that while Lois and Chloe, etc. were at least funny and witty, Clark could've been repeating lines from every episode that had come before "I'll never let that happen!" etc. and it annoyed me because I thought that they could've done much more with is character than have him be this super-stoic bland repetitive character. Every once in a while it would surprise me and Tom would pull off a great episode with some great acting, but it was between several episodes of MEH...

    ReplyDelete
  37. And this is where I need to step in... don't take it to heart. I'm hardly ever serious. There's always sarcasm. More often than, I'm having a laugh at my own expense.

This is the internet. Why so serious?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I've been around the block a few times.

    Damaged goods I tell ya.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yeah, that little tidbit of info always freaked me out.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Baha. I've actually not watched the sitcoms you mention... and probably for those reasons! XD

    ReplyDelete
  41. I don't believe I've ever seen an episode of any of those shows with the exception of 2.5 Men. lol

    ReplyDelete
  42. Had no doubt in my mind that Jack was going to win this the whole time!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yay for Jack! He deserves it for giving us such a bittersweet death - both his own and the show's.

    ReplyDelete

What about shows like Smallville would the characters and show itself be in the finished by next year since its in its final season?

    ReplyDelete

i agree 100% CW is all about women unfortunately and should be on abc or fox or cbs.

It is your opinion on shows and characters but i agreee dont do that to fans of shows. Smallville if u never noticed is the 2nd highest rated show on the cw. go to

Honestly i have 2 ultimate shows that no other show will be able to replace not even this terra nova crap that is supposed to be a huge phenomenon....they are....Smallville and Supernatural. Now Smallville is actually my favorite of all time because i have always been a comic book and superman fan at heart since i was pretty much 1 years old. Supernatural I think is pretty close its just i think they could have done better with comedy a little more. For most of the seasons they have an episode every now and then like the pilot (when dean comes out of the river all muddy lol), everybody loves a clown (When Dean meets Jo for the first time...HILARIOUS!) AND all time favorite funny scene was YELLOW FEVER when dean screams from the cat in the pantry!!!! Awsome.... But its not like this every episode. Favorite 3 Smallville episodes: Rosetta (meeting chritopher reeve), Absolute Justice, and Homecoming right now, another 2 would be reckoning and Salvation! I think Abandonded which is next friday looKS amazing!! Granny Goodness, Teri Hatcher, Lindsay Hartley, Deesaad!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Haha, I agree that above comment of Hungry Emo's was a bit douchy, and I'm a definite Smallville fan but ... "because hes emo!!!", seriously? That was the best you could come up with? xD

    ReplyDelete
  50. It has been fun. I really enjoyed the healthy competition. It's also nice to see all the Lost fans so united (for once, haha). Congrats to Dark and Adam for pulling off such a great competition (and finding the cheaters :) )

    ReplyDelete
  51. Good luck with that - wait - a twist? Watch without cringing? There'd have to be some fairly major twisting going on.

I know - call it Super Hungry Emo - no wait 'super' is far too overused - 'Mega' Hungry Emo. From the planet Crapton. Whose craptonite is bad tv shows.

I'm seeing Emmys, and People's Choice awards and - TV Guide covers.

    ReplyDelete
  52. If you've seen me all over this site - surely that means YOU are all over this site too?
Don't tell me you don't have a life either? Cause that's just sad. ;))

Btw hope your exam went well.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Lol Oh yeah - like we hadn't figured THAT out already.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thank you so much for this competition! :) It was great fun even though Supernatural got kicked out halfway through :P I am really looking forward to your reviews on Supernatural. I can't wait until next year!!! :D

Sorry but I have to say this but none of the other polls have got as many votes as the Supernatural ones. Laughing my ass off at that right now :P

    ReplyDelete
  55. Smallville would be a current show. I'd say any show that airs an episode during the 2010-11 season is a current show.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I've heard those people were extinct. Do you mean there are still people who leave the house other than work and don't stare at a screen all day?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Watch Burn Notice. We need more commentors for it on this site. :-). Of all the new shows I've watched because of these 2 contests, Veronica Mars was probably the best. What have you liked?

    ReplyDelete
  58. I only saw the premiere of Outsourced but it was painful for me to watch. I'll stick with Community and my new favorite, Raising Hope.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Forget the weekly interruption. It was the interminable hiatus between season 1 and 2 when hellatus was coined. Who could see that ending without yelling Kripke!!!! It was the first time I searched out other fans who could feel my pain since the X-Files. So, so cruel. 5 years later I'm still watching Supernatural and yelling Kripke!!! or Sera!!! these days. But at least, now I have all of you to help me through it. These contests were a summer relief.

    ReplyDelete
  60. If Veronica Mars had gone on instead of being cancelled for Gossip Girl, and it went back to the insanely good quality of seasons 1-2, there's a real possibility that today it would rank higher than Supernatural. O.o

    ReplyDelete
  61. I second that Claudia - what would we do without Hungry Emo to keep us on our toes.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I don't think it would ever top Supernatual for me, but it had great characters, especially Papa Mars, and I liked the combination of a season long story interspersed with standalones. It did lean a tad too much on the high school melodrama at times for me and I got whiplash with some character development turns. All in all though, it was my favorite "old" show I watched this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  63. NO.

It's cos I'm 25 and married. I need to take this frustration out on someone!

    ReplyDelete
  64. There's a really big difference between having an opinion about a show and having an opinion about its fans. Some people take it personally when someone insults a show, which I don't really understand.

Nevertheless, I do think Smallville is scripted television at its worst (Charmed used to hold that title) but at the same time, I understand its appeal. And while I don't like the show, it doesn't mean I'm insulting its fans when I say that.

    ReplyDelete
  65. ... and the weapon of choice is a Crapper?

    ReplyDelete
  66. I am so incredibly happy that jack won! i don't watch a lot of tv, but i was obsessed with lost and jack was my favorite character from the beginning. matthew fox did an amazing job with him. i've never watched an episode of smallville but was surprised that clark kent made it to the finals....great job getting it all together!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hey I do that every time I read one of your posts - you're so lovably nasty.

    ReplyDelete
  68. .....and the ammo is.....?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Are we going there? Baha.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I resemble that remark.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yaaaaaaay!!!!!!!!!! I'm really happy right now!.....That's all I have to say...Lol!

    ReplyDelete
  72. You caught me! I admit it, I don't have a life either. We're all sad. HAHA.

Thanks! I hope so too! But if i didn't... SUPERNATURAL BETTER GET THAT COVER, YOU HEAR BE TV GUIDE? YOU OWE ME AT LEAST THAT MUCH.

  73. SmallvilleSupernaturalCastle8 November 2010 at 19:20

but im talking about next year for the character competition when its the 2011-2012 season. Smallville should be in the current list even tho it ended in may because its in that year right?

    ReplyDelete
  74. The Character & Show Competitions will be straight after the 2010-11 seasons, so Smallville will be current as it aired it's final season that year, then in 2012 it would be in the Past Shows part of the Competition :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. MikeOnTheTrollcycle13 November 2010 at 16:39

This com petition is a joke. LOST fans, Smallville fans, and Supernatural fans were all caught cheating in the early rounds. Then River Tam gets eliminated for her fans doing the same thing. This poll is a farce.

Semifinal got 1000 votes, final got spam-botted with scripts. If you tried to vote from a proxy 99% of the time it said "Thank you, we have already counted your vote" through the entire competition in EVERY round.

You are all a bunch of poor losers and crybabies. DarkUFO is a fool and saying River would not have made it past the first round against some boner from a crappy show is a lie. in her 3rd round she trounced Abby who got like 300 pathetic votes. .. m ostly fro m the sa me 3 people spam spamming.

I will be sure to ruin every pll you guy set up regardless of who is in contention just out of spite for DarkUFO's smartass rem arks because he is MAD that his favorite Stupornatural show made on the CW for people with vagina's lost

    My Virtual Proxy Network awaits.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Oh, we're the crybabies? Seems to me like you should follow you're own advice. Oh, and "Stupornatural"? You shamed us all with your brilliance.

Also, River. Tam. Lost. Get over it.

    ReplyDelete
  79. MikeOnTheTrollcycle13 November 2010 at 17:21

Have fun with all your future corrupted poll results.

River was disqualified because one person was a braggart. Lost fans clearly cheated the entire way though this bracket.

Anyone who thinks any poll worth voting in online is not gamed is an ignoramus. It just so happens River fans are better at it than the one guy spamming for LOST.

    Deal with it.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Again, it is all a case of following your own advice. Deal with it.

    Have fun getting banned.

    ReplyDelete
  81. After Sam Winchester lost to Elena Gilbert I stopped paying any attention to the poll. I am glad she got knocked out because I am sure there were other characters way better than her. Surprised she got that far but that is just my opinion. Elena fans were surely upset by the loss. Glad to see Jack from Lost knocked her out. Congrats to Jack from Lost for winning the competition.

NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
