THE WINNER AND FINAL THOUGHTS POST IS HERE: http://www.spoilertv.com/2010/11/2010-character-competition-winner-final.html
Day 29:
64 characters were chosen from shows both past and present. We have reached the final two, one from the phenomenon that was LOST, which recently ended it 6 season run, Jack Shephard. The other comes from a longer-lived, and much loved show, Smallville.
We have had hundreds of thousands of individual votes over the past month, so thanks to everyone who has joined in the competition, as well as the Show Competition I ran over the summer. I'll save the thanks until tomorrow when the 2010 Character Competition winner is announced, but spread the word one last time, twitter, facebook, Youtube, whatever you fancy, but let's break records as Jack & Clark do battle.
It was a shame we had to delay the final few days, and the huge interest has wained, but we can finish with a bang and hopefully be back better than ever when the next competition arrives, hopefully some time soon. I've certainly enjoyed doing them.
Our leader going into the final day is Marcus ""TongueChamp"" A with 92 points, and still a potential to win the final. :)
Also keep upto date with the competition and/or ask questions by following me on twitter. I'll also post some of my reviews, writing updates & other bits & bobs, more often than not TV and Film based. I'm at: http://twitter.com/AdDHarris
Don't forget to keep following your bracket if you entered the competition at http://www.dawgsled.com/darkufo/welcome.asp

Wow. First vote. lol
ReplyDeleteI voted for Jack, totally awesome and the best LOST character.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the final guys :)
Jack all the way. He deserves to win this competition.
ReplyDeleteTom always and forever
ReplyDeleteSo this is it... The epic final...
ReplyDeleteYou go, Doc! :)
LOL The Final is between Clark and Jack really?... alright
ReplyDeletehey I've been enjoying the character cup for a while and this is my first comment! the above post says ", but let's break records as Jack & River do battle" , I think you mean Jack and Clark :P Superman always has my vote!
ReplyDeletehahaha. I copied some stuff from what we inititally thought was gonna be the final. It should be changed :)
ReplyDeleteClark!!!!!
ReplyDeleteClark by a country mile!!!! i like jack, but he is nothing compared to Supes
ReplyDeleteyay!! lets go clark!!!!!! Smallville is the best show ever!!!! Clark is the man and he will throw Jack into the phantom zone because he is going to win!! Jack i would watch out for some phantoms like Faora and Zod, I dont think they like weaklings!!! But dont worry one day you will be released and by then Superman will kick your BEEP!!!
ReplyDeleteJust a little friendly competition
of course i voted Jack :D
ReplyDeletePLEASE LOSTIES, KEEP SUPPORTING HIM!!
Y? because he was in six seasons? because he was stuck on an island? Well Clark was in 10 seasons!!! Clark is saving the world!!! Its not like a geek show it has much more then that like relation from realality to the show. In seasons 1-4 he was in high school and dealt with normal teenage stuff like love and friends even tho he has powers and dealt with psycho meteor freaks! He gets a job, went to college for a year, and becomes a symbol of hope for the world! So tell me...y does jack deserve it? Clark deserves to be appreciated from fans who dont know any other way how to!
ReplyDeleteLET'S GO CLARK KENT!
ReplyDeleteC'mon!! Clark Kent gotta win!! LOL!!
ReplyDeleteUghh, I'm stuck. Jack my favorite character, and Smallville my favorite show. Can't choose!!!
ReplyDeleteIf you would have told me that I would vote for Jack THREE times in this contest, I would never have believed you. But my vote is Jack. Again. It's amazing how completely off this contest has been from the one I thought it would be. Jack gets my vote because in season 1 he was amazing - my favorite character. Clark pined over Lana for half the show and had all that superhero angst.
ReplyDeleteI think both shows can proudly say they were "geek" shows and they both dealt with relationship issues and freaky supernatural junk. In fact, I would guess that many people are fans of both shows, albeit for different reasons.
ReplyDeleteJack is a vote for backpacks!
ReplyDeleteIf you think about it in a strictly character point of view, I do believe Clark is a better fit to win. Not that he's exactly a better character, but he is better to win. Does that make any sense at all? Anyways, I hope someone understands what I'm trying to say.
ReplyDeleteCome on Dark, rally the troops!
ReplyDeletePlease choose Jack, dude.
ReplyDeletetrue but who do u think deserves the spot of champion more? The competition is about character not show, Supernatural won that. For character I think Clark has gone through much more like losing his father (well if u count lionel and jor-el then 3 fathers), friends like Pete and Jimmy, lovers like Lana, and best friends who became his "ultimate opponment" quote from Dr. Fate, Lex Luthor. He has lost more than that to. Clark has evolved extraordinarily from the 1st season as a freshman in love with lana to season 10 and out saving the world. He has faced deadly meteor freaks, Brainiac a deadly computer, Phantom Zone criminals from 28 known galaxys, Doomdsay the kryptonian monster, General Zod the being who destroyed Krypton, Clark's nemesis Lex, and now Darkseid who controls the planet Apocalips. He has brought heroes from the Justice soceity to Justice League together and he doesnt give up even if he dies in the process. In my opinion, Clark is the best character a show can have
ReplyDeleteLol, no! Chose Clark!
ReplyDeleteJACK! he is awesome.
ReplyDeleteBring it home, Jack!
ReplyDeleteMan this was hard...but I had to go with Jack. Although Clark is winning and I'm kinda happy too, I'm sorry but Smallville fans shouldn't get their hopes so high, it just takes Andy (Dark) to post this on DarkUFO and Jack will probably win with 10.000 votes...sadly the admins of KryptonSite, which is the biggest Smallville fansite, don't allow posting external polls.
ReplyDeleteThis has nothing to with the characters per se, but (as a fan of both shows) I can pretty confidently say that Jack is better written and portrayed than Clark. Sorry, but Clark's dialogue is just way too melodramatic and self-serving at times. Likewise, there's a reason why Matthew Fox (Jack) was nominated for the Best Leading Actor Emmy last season and Tom Welling (Clark) was not. Clark's emotions tend to seem somewhat forced, and his words can often be described as hollow. But when Jack cries, well, you can empathize.
ReplyDeleteAs far as they go as characters, though, I pose one question: has Clark ever done anything to make countless fans cry? Fans of Lost simply have a stronger emotional connection to Jack. Flashbacks, flash-forwards, and flash-sideways have allowed Jack's personality and motivation to develop in a less linear, more stylistic, more fluid, and more sympathetic fashion than Clark's. I'm sorry, but I believe Jack is clearly the better character.
P.S. Anyone trying to decide who is a better character should give this test a shot: try to describe each character without mentioning his occupation, appearance, goals, and actor. Whoever has a more detailed description is the better character.
P.P.S. I call this the "Episode I test." Try using it on any character in "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace"...
Glad I'm not the only one annoyed with his Lana issues and super-angst...
ReplyDeleteThis is the result I'm hoping for.
ReplyDeleteDipolarbear summed it up but just to reiterate, it's not about how much a character has gone through or what storylines they've had... it's about how that character comes across, how it is written, portrayed, received, etc.
ReplyDeleteHow you've described Clark Kent isn't dissimilar to how someone might describe Buffy. And she even died twice... so, isn't she the best character a show can have?
Well, River DID break records. ;)
ReplyDeleteNot too keen on either. I'm dumfounded how this is the finale.
ReplyDeleteHowever, for me, Jack is the better character. A quiet "Go Jack" from me.
voted clark kent/tom welling (actor does make the character) because he is in his final season, had this been last year and i would have voted for jack sheppard /matthew fox
ReplyDeleteGo Clark! I'm glad he's winning right now! :D
ReplyDeleteVoted for Jack. Still wish the final had been Mulder vs. Jack, because then I would have had a really tough time!!
ReplyDeleteJack whines way too much. Plain and simple.
ReplyDeleteVoted for Clark Kent since he is in my opinion the better character...
ReplyDeleteI voted Kent because Jack is the lamest main character of Lost.
ReplyDeleteClark-SUPER-Kent hands down!! Did you guys see that video about Clark? It´s kick-ass!!!
ReplyDeleteGreattttttt video!!!
I voted for Clark; because if I didn't, he would have punched me into the exosphere.
ReplyDeleteCOMMON SMALLVILLE FANS VOTE ALL YOU GOT FOR CLARK KENT!!! GO CLARK GO CLARK!!!
ReplyDeleteOnly Jack!
ReplyDeleteChoose Clark! Jack has nothing on him!
ReplyDeleteHaha, that's a weird response. This is the CHARACTER cup. And you literally say Jack is your favorite character... Then why can't you choose? Simply vote for Jack then. If this were the series competition and it was Lost vs Smalville, thén you should've picked Smallville. But this is the character cup, and you say Jack is your favorite character... So pick him.
ReplyDeleteVoted for Jack, although I don't really like either of them.
ReplyDeleteIm a Gigantic fan of both shows, but as far as characters and their development I am voting for Clark having re-watched the shows in their entirety (for smallville up to season 9) Clark has gone through more as a character, so as far as characters are concerned i am voting Clark if the competition was about the show i probably couldn't decide
ReplyDeleteMy fav character from my fav show, JACK, vs. my fav character from my 2nd fav show. JACK FTW!
ReplyDeleteYeah! Go Jack! DarkUFO FTW!
ReplyDeleteI like how this poll assumes that everyone coming here has already seen the last episode of Lost.
ReplyDeletedamn man, you rewatched Smallville in its entirety? How much time it took you? lol like 190 hours I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteyeah lol, I'm expecting that too. You guys have an advantage over Smallville fans.. =P If Kryptonsite wasn't such a weirdo we'd do great in polls.
ReplyDeleteClark Kent... now who's gonna win :)
ReplyDeleteShephard all the way !
ReplyDeleteLOL, Clark has died like 4-5 times.
ReplyDeleteI've done that many times with other shows. And yeah, it takes a butt load of time to do it, too LOL
ReplyDeleteLets go Clark, Lets go!! Lets go Clark, Lets go!!!! U can win clark!!! Common people keep voting for Clark!!!
ReplyDeleteJack Shepard all the way!
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty close! Not long to go now!
ReplyDeleteIt's getting pretty close again! Jack WILL kneel before Clark Kent!
ReplyDeleteThat's part of the problem with Clark: the audience knows the writers will never permanently kill off Clark. Without that chance of him really dying, suspense and emotional immersion are restricted.
ReplyDeleteCome on, Losties! Live together, die alone!
ReplyDeleteJack > emotional baby Superman
ReplyDeleteEven though Locke > all IMO.
Quantity is not quality.
ReplyDeleteGo watch Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs and tell me otherwise.
Jack all the way.
You answered your own question. This is a character cup. Vote accordingly.
ReplyDeleteHe did whine too much, didn't he? lol
ReplyDeleteso close!!
ReplyDeleteHave you ever watched the show? I mean at least one full season? There is plenty of suspense and emotion.
ReplyDeleteNot only are there many scenes where it has gotten either or both intense and emotional for Clark, but the same can be said for other characters of the show...
WOW ITS REALLY CLOSE ONLY 100 AWAY!!! COMMON SMALLVILLE FANS KEEP ON VOTING FOR CLARK!!!! GO CLARK GO CLARK!!!!
ReplyDeleteWell, for me neither of them are the best character and so would not be my choice for the title. :-) My choice got eliminated long ago. However, a lot of what you said is what made me vote for Jack. Clark's storyline has been far too melodramatic. At times it is like other CW shows with superpowers, especially with his high school drama. (Other times it is incredible and far above all other CW shows except Supernatural, of course.)
ReplyDeleteAfter watching it for 6 years i would say he whines more then clark did in Smallville. Jack IS A WIMP!
ReplyDeleteMe too. Isn't that sad? The only two LOST characters I didn't find annoying were Sayid and Hurley, and apparently Sayid became a waste after I started watching. In Smallville, the only 2 characters I really liked were Chloe and Lex, and Lex became a waste once he hooked up with Lana. It's the lesser of two evils for me this time.
ReplyDeleteI've watched Supernatural in its entirety several times. It's one of my favorite summer activities when we are on hiatus. (Well, I still haven't seen the entirety of the spider in the shower scene in Bugs but I'm never going to see it.) Can't wait for your Supernatural season 1 post Adam!
ReplyDeleteHmm, so few votes, so few comments. This is a little disappointing. Similar to the best show finale. I guess when you only have 2 shows or characters, you don't get a diverse of a crowd following.
ReplyDeleteHow come except for Supernatural? I mean, Smallville AND Supernatural are pretty much the same thing.
ReplyDeleteThink about it...
Both shows have bad guys and good guys. Both shows have similar plots (Though the main plot is different from the other) Both shows are sci fi-ish, Both shows have family first in common. Both shows have that drama that you described as well. And the list of why the shows are similar DOES go on...
well, I haven't even seen the full first season of LOST, but from what I have seen, Jack already annoys me :P
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I thought Lex was a cool character too - I think there was potential about him and they did waste that indeed.
I look forward to future battles as well. I just hope the cheating potential has been squished. I wouldn't mind doing Captcha style voting at all, especially if it's just for a one time go. I know that won't fix everything, but any additional safeguard will help. That, and death threats.
ReplyDelete>.> oops... Bad Amy! Bad! Be nice!
Isn't there like a program out there that does the captcha for you? I thought I read something about that a while ago.
ReplyDeleteEither way, to cheat in a poll is just plain INSANE, man!
Oh, I so can't wait until Black Friday and after, that is when the Supernaural DVDs will be cheap and then I can buy them!!! And then I can have me some Supernaturalathons!
ReplyDeleteThat's actually one of my favorite quotes from Lost.
ReplyDeleteLive Together, Die Alone!
Holy crap. I really wasn't expecting Mr. Kent to be that close to Jack at this point. lol
ReplyDeleteLets give the future superman our support and thank him for the awomse 10 years of entertainment he gave us!! Unliked Jack who was there for 6 years!!! Also on Twitter a writer and producer of Smallville (remember season 9 finale? yea he wrote that) named Al Septein is also getting people to vote for Clark!!!! He is also i believe telling Tom Welling and Smallville people of this so lets support them!!!!!
ReplyDeletethe lost tribute video is pure awesomeness, you can't help but have ur very own lost flashback. It was/is an amazing show.
ReplyDeleteYESS JACK WON!! Even if you think Locke, Ben, Desmond etc. were better overall characters than Jack, you can't disagree that he had the most development throughout LOST.
ReplyDeleteYay! Jack wins!
ReplyDelete<3 Jack!!
ReplyDeleteI won't get into the whole a vote for Jack is a vote for backpacks situation this time :/
Jack Shephard no doubt! I like Clark but honestly, Jack is the best among all the best!!!
ReplyDeleteHell yeah! :D
ReplyDeleteThat was your destiny, Jack! And you have what it takes.
Jack is stronger than Superman.
ReplyDeletelol "pretty much the same thing."
ReplyDeleteNO.
Those "similarities" you posted could link Smallville with any television show in history with a good vs. bad vibe...
I stand by what I said. Both shows are similar...
ReplyDeletelets goooo! jack shephard FTW
ReplyDeletewow that is so close!!!!!! Next year you'll get' em Clark!!!
ReplyDeleteSo bloody happy that Jack won!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWHAT! take that back it's BLASPHEMY
ReplyDelete;)
My dad would watch Supernatural and he would laugh at Smallville... it's not the same at all. Clark is in love with lana blablablablabla oh no but cloe loves you, oh wait pete is in love with cloe to and he is mad at clark. (btw it doesnt sound like it but i LOVE smallville ahaha, though I started this show when i was ... 10 year old.) Not the same just cause its scifi and about family.. plus clark=happy family winchester=not so much hahaah.
ReplyDeleteI just really take it as an insult hahaa.
Aw god at least Jack won hahaha.
ReplyDeleteStill proud that Mulder was involved in the competition with the most votes. Mulder 4 Life
ReplyDeleteGood thing you take it as an insult haha : )
ReplyDeletehaah what's that supose to mean ahhaah. Guess it doesnt make much sense after I said I loved smallville heheh. :DDD I dont know... for me smallville is more like ... a better gossip girl show with superpowers lol. teenage problems. Drama, couple :PPP
ReplyDeleteWell, Smallville doesn't have the brothers and that makes all the difference. Plus, in just my opinion, I consider the writing and acting better on Supernatural. For me, some (definitely not all) of the good vs. bad plots on Smallville lean towards the cartoonish where a lot of Supernatural's bad guys scare me. In the end, it is a matter of taste like so much in this contest. Besides, Superman is not my favorite comic book character so maybe I'm just not that into him.
ReplyDeleteJust make sure you can block off serious chunks of time. It's addicting and before you know it half the day is gone.
ReplyDeleteHmmm.... My intention wasn't to be mean, it was to be a smart ass. I edited because I spelled a few words wrong. I have an OCD thing about that...
ReplyDeleteAnd as for the common knowledge part, those who can correctly relate two things can understand what my original point was.
I watched two whole seasons... I had to force myself to do it because I'd actually bought the boxset.
ReplyDeleteWorst decision I'd ever made.
And I've made some stinkers!
you know all my "hahhaha" means that I'm laughing. I dont think you were mean. :D
ReplyDeleteYeah you common Smallvile fans!
ReplyDeleteCaptcha...nooooooo! I am having flashbacks of swirling circle things and letters that could be numbers.. or letters.. no numbers. My eyes are squinting as a reflex and my head is puckered as the headache slowly works its way down my skull. I'm now suffering from Post-TV Guide Voting Syndrome.
ReplyDeleteOnly Lost characters I were invested in were Sun and Jin. One of the best romances I've seen on television.
ReplyDeleteJack, apparently.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't.
ReplyDeleteI don't like either character so... nothing to say, really.
ReplyDeleteNow if Dean or Mulder were in this, it would be a completely different story.
But Tom Welling won't be the "future" Superman.
ReplyDeleteIt'll be a different actor in the movie. :)
and Dean Winchester. (With Sam they have the top 3 - go SPN!)
ReplyDeleteYeah! to all the fans who have supported this contest and weathered through the unscrupulous cheaters. It was nice hearing why you love your characters so much. It's made me watch a few of them and I will be on the look out for great pre-Christmas buys on some others. I've enjoyed being in a community that is absolutely passionate about their shows but not hostile to counter-opinions. I can't wait to see what Adam has cooked up for next year!
Thanks Adam for all your hard work on this. I know things got frustrating for you, but you've done a great thing here. You've given us a place to talk TV to others who understand our obsessions. You've kept us sane and engaged through the summer hiatus and into a somewhat blah new TV season. I appreciate all your effort. Any hint of what you might do next?
Yeah...also the most voted polls include SPN characters...Even the fourth if I'm not wrong, is the poll Malcom/Castiel (another SPN character)
ReplyDeletemmm...What if he is? There's chances it will be him still...
ReplyDeleteI vote for Clark Kent (Smallville)
ReplyDeleteI vote Clark kent
ReplyDeleteI forgot about them. I did like how they arced from being pretty much strangers to a strong united front. Jin in the beginning creeped me out with his stalkerish ways, but he ended up being one of the few I liked when LOST got tangled in the abyss.
ReplyDeleteI'm still curious as to why some shows have more nominees than others...
ReplyDeleteIt depended on who got the most nominations in the nominating phase. Each show could have up to 6 characters with a 3 male and 3 female max. Shows like LOST that have a lot of favorite characters (and quite a few fans on this site) ended up with more characters. For Supernatural, which does not have any lead female characters, the maximum number of characters it could get is 3. Poor Bobby. It all really depended on which shows had the most people participating in the nominating phase.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that makes sense. Thanks for responding!
ReplyDeleteThat means you didn't see the Jensen Ackles year. It was not his best role. I greatly prefer Smart Alec. First off, he played Lana's too-old, secret boyfriend which just shows bad taste. I don't mean the too-old or secret part although that was creepy too. Mainly it's the Lana thing. Then, he was in these awful red outfits the whole time and my eyes couldn't take the glare. The last straw is the come from nowhere ending that screamed "fill the plot hole" but may be because they had to write Jensen off the show so he could do Supernatural. That was the greatest thing Smallville ever did for me - give me Dean Winchester!
ReplyDeleteI watched 2 full seasons and others sporadically. My point is that if there is literally no chance that Clark will die and stay dead, we can't actually fear for his life. As for Lost, there have been instances where I was legitimately afraid that some of my favorite characters would die. And Clark has never had a scene that has left me in tears and/or covered in goosebumps. Smallville does have suspense and emotion, but since we already know what Clark's fate will be, there's no reason to hold our breath in anticipation.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you on every count. I'm not a faithful fan of Supernatural, but it still manages to grab my attention when I channel-surf. Not entirely sure why they're making a 6th season, though.
ReplyDeleteSun and Jin are a key example of how to make a relationship evolve in a TV drama (unlike Clark and Lana, which just dragged on).
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite quotes of all time.
ReplyDeleteI don't know. Clark has teen problems and super-angst. I think we can all agree, though, that neither of them is as quick to complain/whine as Anakin Skywalker (OK, not from a TV show, but it's still true).
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by "common Smallville fans?" It sounds like a grass-roots political campaign message.
ReplyDeleteHa! : )
ReplyDeleteLove what you said! Sounds like grass-roots political campaign message!
ReplyDeleteDoes number of years on-air speak that much for the quality of a character? Remember: the producers of Lost decided to end the series after 6 years. Smallville has been pressured by networks, rating, and viewship to close shop multiple times. Lost was on for 4 less years because that is how long it took to tell the story.
ReplyDeleteThat's the spirit! Considering how close he got, Clark really does have a good shot next year (especially if KryptoSite allows external links and the finale with Darkseid is as epic as can be).
ReplyDeleteThere's still life in the old dog yet.
ReplyDeleteThis season is proving that, if nothing else.
VOTE FOR CLARK KENT
ReplyDeleteDid the crazy Summer Glau stalker visit that poll too? Bahaha.
ReplyDeleteYesh. I love how Jin "softened" up over the years and Sun "hardened" up.
ReplyDeleteIt helped that the actors were amazing too.
Nolan is in charge of the reboot. He knows talent.
ReplyDeleteThere'll be no Welling.
I wouldn't want to taint my image of Jensen by watching him in that.
ReplyDeleteUnless you're a time traveller, you can't.
ReplyDeleteI think he's hiding under another name stirring up stuff on the Supernatural posts. Things are getting straight-out crazy over there. :-P
ReplyDeleteLike both characters, but voted Jack.. To develop a character like that in 6 years is amazing.. Yes, yes Clark is a very developed character, but SV's writers had a 100 year template to work and base his character on from comics, movies, prior TV series, cartoons etc.. Smallville writers knew what they had and only had to add their tweaks.. As where Lost made up the Jack character that will live on in TV history now, in a matter of a short 6 TV seasons.. Hence i voted Jack
ReplyDeleteHaha YES!
ReplyDeleteJack FTW!!!!!
OMG Jaaaack ♥
ReplyDeleteI don't watch most of the popular shows in the competition, so I was mainly supporting LOST here, and from the many amazing characters LOST had Jack has always been my favorite.
So glad he won :)
THANK YOU so much Adam for making this cup, and as always Darkufo for having us :)
Ha lol. I know, it would be a lot closer, especially now that Lost is
ReplyDeleteover and Smallville is still on.
The Lost Finale Poll we had 55,000+ people votes on that poll. Crazy days.
For the simple Captcha yes there problably is which involves OCR
ReplyDeleterecognition etc but the newer, more modern captcha still have not yet
been effectively cracked.
But yes I agree, Poll cheating is pretty lame but it happens everywhere.
Ha yes, death threats are certainly an option :)
ReplyDeletePolldaddy have said that they hope to have a captcha option in
future,so hopefully when we do the Character and Show cups next year
it will be a cheat free as any online poll possibly can be :)
Yep, we found that over the years at DarkUFO for the various cups.
ReplyDeletePeople had said everything they wanted to say leading up to to the
final and as you said "tactical" voting no longer takes place :)
Who deserves to win changes from person to person, it's not like asking whats 2 + 2. One may think Jack deserves to win, another may think Clark does.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen Smallville, so, I voted for Jack. I think Jack is one of the best characters ever written on television and yeah, I think deserves to win. Maybe Clark does too, but I wouldn't know about that.
