-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS remains the network to beat in the Tuesday overnights, with an advantage over second-place ABC last night of 35 percent. But the home of Glee, Fox, is poised for victory among adults 18-49 (despite the ongoing failure of freshman lead-out sitcoms Raising Hope and Running Wilde). Third overall in the overnights was Fox, followed by NBC and The CW.
CBS’ NCIS stood well above the competition at 8 p.m. in the overnights, with a 12.6 rating/20 share, but Fox’s competing Glee (#2: 8.1/12) has a lock among adults 18-49. Next on CBS was spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (#2: 10.5/16 at 9 p.m.), which trailed ABC’s competing Dancing with the Stars (#1: 12.0/18) by 12 percent, followed by The Good Wife at a dominant 9.3/16 at 10 p.m. Consider this another Tuesday of all “winners” on CBS.
In week two news, ABC’s No Ordinary Family finished third in the overnights, with a 5.9/ 9 at 8 p.m. One week earlier, it kicked-off with a 7.4/11, so this was a loss of 20 percent. But compared to year-ago occupant Shark Tank (3.5/ 6 on Oct. 6, 2009), it was an increase of a hefty 69 percent for No Ordinary Family.
Next on ABC was aforementioned Dancing with the Stars (#1: 12.0/18 – so long, Margaret Cho), followed by week three of Detroit 1-8-7 at a series-low (and distant second-place) 5.7/10 at 10 p.m. Comparably, retention for Detroit 1-8-7 out pf the 9:30 p.m. portion of Dancing with the Stars (12.4/19) was only 46 percent, and the crime-solver dipped by 19 percent at 10:30 p.m. (6.3/10 to 5.1/ 9). Take a look at the three-week overnight track:
Detroit 1-8-7 (ABC) – Tues. 10 p.m.
9/21/10: 7.1/12
9/28/10: 6.1/10
10/05/10: 5.7/10
Needless to say, ABC could do better Tuesday at 10 p.m. out of blockbuster Dancing with the Stars.
Over at Fox, the stellar 8.1/12 in the overnights for Glee at 8 p.m. was completely wasted on lead-out sitcoms Raising Hope (#4: 4.1/ 6) and Running Wilde (#4: 2.6/ 4) from 9-10 p.m., which were both series lows. Here are the three-week overnight tracks:
Raising Hope (Fox) – Tues. 9 p.m.
9/21/10: 4.9/ 7
9/28/10: 4.8/ 7
10/05/10: 4.1/ 6
Running Wilde (Fox) – Tues. 9:30 p.m.
9/21/10: 3.9/ 6
9/28/10: 3.3/ 5
10/05/10: 2.6/ 4
One year earlier, the fall 2009 edition of So You Think You Can Dance averaged a 3.3/ 5 on Oct. 6, 2009, but the lead-in support was only a 4.3/ 7 from Hell’s Kitchen. Retention for Raising Hope out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of Glee (8.2/12) was only 50 percent.
Next was NBC care of inspirational The Biggest Loser at a below-average 4.6/ 7 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. One year earlier, it averaged a 4.9/ 8 on Oct. 6, 2009. Here is the half-hour breakdown:
The Biggest Loser (NBC):
8:00 p.m.: 4.5/ 7 (#4)
8:30 p.m.: 4.5/ 7 (#4)
9:00 p.m.: 4.7/ 7 (#3)
9:30 p.m.: 4.8/ 7 (#3)
Capping off the evening for NBC was family drama Parenthood at a distant last-place 3.8/ 6 at 10 p.m. One year earlier, failed occupant The Jay Leno Show averaged a 4.4/ 7 in the overnights on Oct. 6, 2009.
The CW closed the night with its struggling combination of One Tree Hill (#5: 1.5/ 2), which should have called it quits by now, and sophomore Life Unexpected (#5: 1.2/ 2), which deserves better lead-in support.

Cable ratings are published separately from the network overnight ratings.
ReplyDeleteAnd how long does that usually take?
ReplyDeleteLeon, we posted the Cable ratings this morning.
ReplyDeleteI miss the rating for Caprica and Stargate Universe!
ReplyDeleteThe show is doing reasonably well, it just attracts a generally older audience and that is going to keep its demo rating down. I call it "Without A Trace - itis." Admittedly, it's not very catchy. :(
ReplyDeleteABC would also hate to see it get canceled. My Generation, Detroit 187, and The Whole Truth have already got the network in a tailspin. And, hey, I'm rooting for the show too. I wasn't expecting much from the clips I saw over the summer, but the show is turning out to be pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why the CW decided for One Tree Hill to be on a Tuesday night where so many great shows are on. They need to go back to Monday night and that way their will be more rating.
ReplyDeleteHow is it that The Good Wife pulls in 12.7 mil viewers and has an 18-49 rating of 2.5, but is listed 2 places away from being "In danger" on the cancellation predictor (or "predicator")? I thought it was doing well.
ReplyDeleteI'd like No Ordinary Family to go on because I really like Michael "Vic Mackey" Chicklis and Julie "Rita Bennett and also Darla" Benz as the leads. The pilot of this new show was very cliché and predictible though, and it felt like the target audience was the 8/12-year olds. I haven't seen the second episode yet, but I will check it out, just for the cast for now, I expect some interest in the plot to grow very quickly.
ReplyDeleteI really hope Running Wilde will not be cancelled (because even if I didn't really like the first couple of episodes, I still think that "Mitch Hurwitz + Will Arnett" can only mean "awesome, smart comedy" so I won't give up now, I'm sure the show will get better, if FOX allows that). FOX canned Lone Star which made 4 million viewers right after a 10 million viewer show (House) so the low ratings of RW should be thought through because Raising Hope is not a hit either, only 6 million viewers. Besides, we learned today that Drea de Matteo will guest-star in an episode in november so the production seems to go on.
Yep, it;s a pretty big drop. The key will be next weeks figures. Most
ReplyDeleteshow lose their initial premiere ratings as people "check out" the new
shows.. It should be ok but another large drop like that and we'll
have to start worrying a little.
No Ordinary Family down 20%? I'm actually liking this show a lot. The actors are doing great work and are making this super-powers show believable and fun. I'd hate to see it get cancelled early.
ReplyDeleteI don't really understand how the ratings thingy works... but glad to see Glee's doing well.
ReplyDeleteI loooove how NCIS is doing so well! And so is NCIS:LA!
