-Ratings Breakdown:
Despite facing baseball on Fox, CBS still dominated in the Thursday overnights with a 1.4 rating point advantage over Fox. Keep in mind that Cablevision subscribers in New York still have no access to Fox, which has negatively impacted the results. Next was ABC, followed by distant NBC and The CW.
Red-hot The Big Bang Theory remained just that, with an 8.9 rating/15 share in the overnights at 8 p.m. That led into just full season renewed $#*! My Dad Says, which rose to a 7.0/11 at 8:30 p.m. -- its best overnight performance since debuting on Sept. 23. Together, the two sitcoms outdelivered year-ago occupant Survivor: Samoa (6.7/11 on Oct. 22, 2009) by a healthy 19 percent. Five-week overnight track for $#*! My Dad Says:
$#*! My Dad Says (CBS)
9/23/10: 7.7/12
9/20/10: 6.7/11
10/07/10: 6.3/10
10/14/10: 6.6/10
10/21/10: 7.0/11
Next on CBS, of course, was veteran CSI (#1: 9.5/15), which capitalized on the current odd interest in hoarders, followed by The Mentalist at a 9.7/17 at 10 p.m. While it certainly will not lead the evening among adults 18-49, The Mentalist once again was top-rated in the overnights.
On Fox, game five of The National League Championship Series, Philadelphia vs. San Francisco, averaged an approximate 8.2/13 in the overnights in primetime, with the half-hour breakdown as follows:
NLCS Game 5: Philadelphia vs. San Francisco (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 6.6/11 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 8.0/13 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 7.5/12 (#3)
9:30 p.m.: 8.6/13 (#2)
10:00 p.m.: 9.0/14 (#1)
10:30 p.m.: 9.4/15 (#1)
One year earlier, game five of the American League Championship Series (New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels) was virtually identical with an 8.0/13 on Oct. 22, 2009. Keep in mind, as always, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.
It was business as usual on ABC with its line-up of a repeat of Grey’s Anatomy (#4: 3.2/ 5), an original installment of Grey’s Anatomy (#2: 8.3/13), and spin-off Private Practice (#2: 5.7/ 9), which will narrow the gap among adults 18-49 opposite CBS’ aforementioned The Mentalist. At present, ABC has still not announced anything to officially step in for canceled My Generation at 8 p.m.
NBC also had nothing unusual to report with its lackluster combination of comedies Community (#3t, 3.0/ 5), 30 Rock (#3: 3.9/ 6), The Office (#4: 4.6/ 7) and Outsourced (#4: 3.5/ 5) from 8-10 p.m., and failing The Apprentice at 10 p.m. (#4: 2.8/ 5). The Office always resonates among adults 18-49, but lead-out Outsourced dipped to a series low and not even Donald Trump can spin these horrific results for The Apprentice. Five-week overnight track for Outsourced:
Outsourced (NBC)
9/23/10: 5.0/ 8
9/20/10: 4.1/ 6
10/07/10: 3.8/ 6
10/14/10: 3.8/ 6
10/21/10: 3.5/ 5
The CW closed the evening with dramas The Vampire Diaries (#5: 2.6/ 4) and Nikita (#5: 2.0/ 3).

Look at the table, it's one of the safest shows. 80% of shows have not
ReplyDeletebeen renewed yet.
I'm worried about Grey's. They haven't renewed it for another season, yet. It's only it its seventh season. Surely, they wouldn't cancel it...would they?
ReplyDeleteI'm concerned for Nikita considering it still hasnt go a full season / additional scripts while every since other CW show has at least gotten an additional script order and they're about to film episode 11 so i'd assume all 13 have been written so the writers are doing..nothing now
ReplyDeleteA 18-49 rentention out of Vampire Diaries is only 58% and women 18-34 retention even less

ReplyDeletetonight it only kept 58% of VD's 18- 49 audience and even less of VD's women 18-34 audience
CSI is still very strong and it's a very big brand overseas as well.
ReplyDeleteI'm very sure it will be renewed if the writers/cast want to do
another season
what do you think about CSI, Dark ?
ReplyDeleteI hope they will have a 12th season, the ratings are not so bad for a tv show which is 11 years old ;)
Yep, pretty sure they are here for next season :)
ReplyDeletelooks good for the vampire diaries and nikita! yay
ReplyDeleteYou're right, I'm sorry. The thing is, I didn't really get your point, it was a misunderstanding from my site. You're right, DH and Football aren't probably competing for the same viewers, still I think there are a lots of desperate housewives out there who want to watch their show but can't because their husbands want to watch Football. :D
ReplyDeleteIt's just, this show means everything to me and I'm protetcting it with my life. And by the way, it's 3 AM overhere and I feel like I'm talking complete bullsh*t Lol.
Sorry again. I'mma go to bed. :)
Who's arguing? I thought we were having a perfectly fine ratings discussion? Anyway, my whole point about the DH time slot was that Desperate Housewives and the other programs in its time slot aren't competing for the same viewers. Most people who watch SNF or Family Guy aren't going to be interested in Desperate Housewives.
ReplyDeleteAt any rate, I'm sorry if the discussion took a sour turn for you.
Well Bruce, DH has to face Sunday Night Football (which is huge), Family Guy, Undercover Boss and sometimes Baseball as well. And yes, I admint, Grey's has to face a lot, too, but still,, last night Baseball was on and you see what happened to Grey's. DH has to face that every week.
ReplyDeleteBut you know what, let's stop arguing, I'm really tired of this, I had to argue with some stupid naysayers on Pifeedback for the whole week.
Not really, Logan99.
ReplyDeleteI doubt Desperate Housewives is fighting for the same viewers as Sunday Night Football or Family Guy. Yet, on Thursday's, Grey's Anatomy is pitted against CSI which both share much of the same demographic. The only show close to DH's main viewer demographic in the 9pm time slot is Undercover Boss. I'd argue that Grey's has a much tougher time slot.
Yeah but keep in mind that DH is facing tougher competition than Ga.
ReplyDeleteYou really can't go by one week's rating. Total viewers matter very little and Grey's has a higher average demo rating. DH is second to Grey's. Grey's season average is 4.64 and DH is 4.13.
ReplyDelete"Anyway, Grey's is the highest rated scripted program on ABC. The network isn't letting it go any time soon."
ReplyDeleteI don't if I'd agree with that. There's a neverending competition between Grey's and DH. DH hit a 3.9 and 12.43 million on Sunday while Grey's hit a 3.9 and 10.79 million last night.
Veteran network shows are almost never renewed before new shows.
ReplyDeleteThe renewal process for shows such as Grey's is a lot more complicated because of a myriad of contractual issues that long-running successful shows face, like retransmission fees, actor and crew salaries, licensing fees, residuals, production budgets, etc. All of this stuff usually has to be negotiated and it takes time, but if the show is a hit it will always get done.
For instance, at the end of season 4 of Bones, FOX negotiated with the production company on the price of the network licensing fee in return for renewing the show for 2 seasons (5 and 6) instead of just one.
Anyway, Grey's is the highest rated scripted program on ABC. The network isn't letting it go any time soon.
Yes and it's October, we'll have to wait untill May for ABC pick-ups! But don't worry, if an ABC show is safe, then it's DH and GA
ReplyDeleteOkay, now I'm well-rested Lol.
ReplyDeleteI still think DH has a tougher competition than Grey's, and here's why:
Grey's airs against CSI (which barely get's a 3.0 these days) and The Office (also around 3.0). That's my theory why GA's demo is better than DH's.
Because,
DH airs against Family Guy (yes, it's probably not the same audience, but it still gets a 3.5 - 4.0 in the demo), Football, which gets around 6.0, and as I said in my previous post, I'm sure there are a lot of women/girls out there who want to watch DH but can't because their husbands/brothers watch Football. And Undercover Boss gets around 3.5 - 3.8, which is pretty much the same audience as DH.
I think DH would do better in GA's timeslot, it's used to tough competition.
Ah, okay. Fair enough. Get some sleep and you can start to talk bullsh** all over again tomorrow. :)
