-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS remains the network to beat on uneventful Friday with its combination of Medium (Viewers: #2, 6.10 million; A18-49: #1, 1.2 rating/5 share), which is not strong enough to anchor the evening, relocated CSI: NY (Viewers: #1, 9.87 million; A18-49: #1, 1.9/ 6) and week three of older-skewing Blue Bloods (Viewers: #1, 11.09 million; A18-49: #1t, 1.8/ 6), which remains the most-watched show on Friday. But an average 1.6 rating/6 share for the Eye net among adults 18-49 is certainly nothing to boast about. One year earlier, former 9 p.m. occupant Medium averaged 8.29 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49, so CSI: NY in bringing in more viewers (and Medium is ready to call it quits).
On NBC, 10 p.m. occupant Outlaw, which is on temporary hold until the next batch of ratings come in, is waiting for the axe to officially swing with a last-place finish in both total viewers (4.23 million) and adults 18-49 (1.0/ 3) at 10 p.m. Comparably, this is worse than year-ago failed occupant The Jay Leno Show (Viewers: 5.31 million; A18-49: 1.4/ 4 on Oct. 9, 2009), and the retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in Dateline (Viewers: 6.67 million; A18-49: 1.7/ 6) was only 63 percent in total viewers and 59 percent in the demo.
Overall, Dateline averaged 6.53 million viewers (#2) and a 1.6/ 6 (#1) among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows:
Dateline (NBC)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 6.05 million (#1), A18-49: 1.4/ 6 (#1)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 6.93 million (#1), A18-49: 1.3/ 5 (#2)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 6.45 million (#2), A18-49: 1.6/ 6 (#2)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 6.67 million (#2), A18-49: 1.7/ 6 (#2)
Since inspirational reality hour School Prides launches at 8 p.m. next Friday, my guess is the network will ultimately air two hours of Dateline from 9-11 p.m. by November.
Over at ABC, repeats of Modern Family (Viewers: #3, 3.89 million; A18-49: #3, 1.0/ 4), The Middle (Viewers: #3, 3.03 million; A18-49: #4, 0.9/ 3) and week two of No Ordinary Family (Viewers: #3, 3.04 million; A18-49: #3, 0.9/ 3) filled the 8-10 p.m. block, followed by veteran 20/20 at 5.43 million viewers (#2) and a 1.8/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#2t) at 10 p.m. There is still no word at present when, and if, scheduled ABC 8-10 p.m. occupants Secret Millionaire and Body of Proof will begin.
Sluggish Fox, which is moving former 8 p.m. drama Human Target to Wednesday next month, opened the night with a repeat of House (Viewers: #4, 2.67 million; A18-49: #4t, 0.9/ 3 at 8 p.m.), which is certainly not the force it used to be. Next was waiting-to-be canceled The Good Guys at a not so good 2.37 million viewers (#4) and a last-place 0.8/ 3 in the demo at 9 p.m.
The CW capped off the night with the perfectly compatible Smallville (Viewers: #5, 2.37 million; A18-49: #3, 1.0/ 4), which in its heyday on the WB was bringing in about 5-million viewers, and lead-out Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 2.28 million; A18-49: #3, 1.0/ 3).

I bet those constant 2.5 million viewers of Smallville are all the members of KryptonSite lol, how loyal of a fan base man, for almost 3 years Smallville has the same ratings in every episode, no matter the day or timeslot.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am surprised that No Ordinary Family got that far up there because my thoughts when I saw the first episode and when I first heard about it, was that it would be good but it just might be canceled...Hopefully not, because I really do enjoy Michael Chiklis. He was awesome in The Shield.
ReplyDeleteOh, wow. Supernatural's rating is pretty poor. I wonder how can that be with such a good show, that gets better with each episode and season.
ReplyDeleteAs for Smallville, same as what I said with Supernatural! Get's better!
I wouldn't hold out any hope for Outlaw. It was given two weeks to improve its ratings and it went down again last night. If there's no significant improvement next week, the show is officially done.
ReplyDeleteI'd say House's ratings on a RERUN aint bad at all. When they air the NEW episodes, House is consistently one of the most watched shows in its timeslot.
ReplyDeleteI'm more concerned about Outlaw, which I actually rather enjoy. I would prefer seeing it moved to 8PM, and move Dateline up to 9-10PM (instead of the current 8-9PM). Less competition at 8PM, and no Blue Bloods nabbing all the viewers.
Man, these ratings news keeps getting harsher and harsher
ReplyDeleteand Of course House would be down a tad, it's a REPEAT!!!!!!!!
Blah. House isnt going anywhere but down, it seems. The only show I really watch anymore may be on it's last breath and I couldn't be more depressed, not to mention Hugh Laurie's contract is up after this season...
ReplyDelete-_- Smallville 10th season getting more viewers then my little supernatural breaks my heart. Any way, happy me as long as its not in the friday,s loosers list mwahahah.
ReplyDeleteand wow this is funny, CW having numbers close to ABC and Fox . nice (be nicer if it was 10millions though HAHHAHA)
Because the CW has a reputation as crap TV. Any show on it already has a black mark to get over. Add in the inane marketing they do and it's a wonder anyone over middle school age watches them. It's too bad because they do have at least one amazing show.
ReplyDeleteTo my surprise, I really enjoyed No Ordinary Family. I love the relationship between the adults and so far the kids haven't annoyed me much. Given the current state of TV, that's pretty amazing in itself.
ReplyDeleteActually for the CW Supernatural's overall viewer ratings are pretty good. It's rare any show breaks 3 million for them.
ReplyDeleteHuh, that's weird, I never see any House repeats, that's the only reason I made the ratings comment, plus i'm new to the whole rating system, sorry.... :)
ReplyDeleteI wish Supernatural would beat Smallville :P It's so annoying though, why does Supernatural and shows on the CW get much less viewers than shows on other networks?
ReplyDeletenot so sure about it, I ditched Smallville as soon as I stopped being a teenager lol nah, actually I ditched it before that :P
ReplyDeleteand I was still a teen when got into SPN :P
of course what you say is all true, though ;)
but screw CW, you do realize people all over the globe watch American TV shows in the net anyway, don't you? And actually where I live, both SPN and Smallville air on a very popular network (only they have the annoying habit of showing Supernatural at crazy night hours, I guess it's too horror-like for them :P)
Well, consider that Latin America are like 15 countries.
ReplyDeleteBut I've always said it's weird that shows on CBS are instantly above 20 million viewers no matter what, and they have like 50 different versions of the same show: CSI, NCIS, Hawaii 5-0, etc.
Smallville had 12 million viewers last year for the episode that introduced the "Wonder Twins"
yeah and their two most famous shows (Supernatural and Smallville) are completely different to what they intend their network to be ("Drama for teenage girls")
ReplyDeleteI really don't trust in ratings, I know that the only people who counts in this numbers are the people who have a Nilsen box, but I know that SPN have more viewers than 2.28 millions of viewers, in Latin America according to the numbers of WB, the lowest rating for SPN was 3.450 and the high rating for 7.100 millions in last season...
ReplyDeleteTeenage girls definitely watch Supernatural and Smallville too (After all, those are the only people the CW ever advertises to.) but I'm pretty sure they are significantly less of the population who do compared to many shows on the CW. :-) We definitely skew higher than say Gossip Girl and 90210. It's unfortunate though because many people I talk to about Supernatural shut down as soon as I say the CW.
ReplyDeleteYou are right about the international audience though. I think they are the reason that Supernatural is still on the air. That, DVD sales, and TNT syndication. I remember reading a few years ago that Supernatural was the most requested TV on DVD show of the American military stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then shortly after that I heard about how well it was doing in international markets. That was when I was sure it would be renewed. Sometimes I think it is the American audience that really gets screwed because its here that preconceived notions about the network its on hurts it before people even watch it.
Thanks for explaining!! :) Honestly, I think Supernatural would do better if we took over the advertising :P
ReplyDeleteSo basically, Supernatural could be way more popular if the CW bothered to advertise it properly to a wider audience? and stop making stupid teen drama shows? or just move Supernatural to FOX or something? I mean, no offense to anyone that likes Gossip Girl or 90210 but I will tear my hair out in frustration if I watched the shows. It just has way too much drama.
Hahahaaa... true. Sad though, Supernatural could do so much better than how it's doing now :P
ReplyDeleteright, but remember there are a lot of fangirls that watch SPN just for Sam & Dean being naked, that's because of The CW advertising :D
ReplyDeleteThen they have to wait a long time. In five seasons, I can count on one hand how many times they have been naked. Whoever these fans are, they would be better off switching to another show. I think the Winchesters wear more clothes than the cast of Northern Exposure did.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think new Supernatural episodes would do really well on TNT or USA. TNT already has the reruns and do a much better job of promoting Supernatural and USA has a great track record for niche audiences. USA also does the best job of anyone in basic cable promoting their shows.
ReplyDeleteUSA got out of the sci-fi genre when they dropped the axe on The 4400 and The Dead Zone. It's really not their thing anymore. USA is all about light-drama procedurals.
ReplyDeleteTNT is the better bet since they're dipping into the sci-fi waters with the upcoming Steven Spielberg alien invasion drama starring Noah Wylie.
Ah..the 4400. Another show ruined by Megalyn E's fencepost acting. I liked that show for a while but then it went downhill fast.
