Primer: Lie to Me 3.01 “In the Red”

Oct 7, 2010

The Premise: Cal is running around robbing banks all wacked off of Scooby snacks.

The Personal: Cal and Detective Wallowski play “Cops and Robbers: The Manwhore Edition,” Gillian finds their relationship laughable, and our little Loker becomes a man.

The Resolution: Through a neat bit of Reservoir Dogs-style reverse storytelling, it’s revealed that Cal gets involved with the robbery when he stumbles onto an ex-con, Mike Salinger, casing the bank during a routine visit. Meanwhile, Foster has frozen their accounts after finding out Cal’s publisher threatened to place a lien against his assets—i.e., The Lightman Group—due to an unfulfilled book contract. Though she later agrees to unfreeze the accounts and assist in the investigation of the impending bank heist, his partner also insists on hiring a grad student to help write his book.

Posing as a former bank employee with insider information, Cal infiltrates the group planning to rob the bank while simultaneously working with new friend Wallowski to thwart the crime. Wallowski tells him Salinger went to prison for assaulting one of the bank’s managers when his claim that his mortgage had been miscalculated went ignored. Realizing Salinger’s claim was true all along, Cal tries to convince him to walk away from the robbery. Unfortunately, he can’t let go of his need for revenge and winds up arrested along with his accomplices. Cal and Gillian arrange for Salinger’s wife to keep her home.

What We Learned from this Episode:

  • TPTB haven’t killed off Agent Reynolds… yet. When questioned about his former associate, Cal’s reply is oblique at best. Hopefully fans will get some kind of closure for Mekhi Phifer’s character at some point in the not-too-distant future.
  • Mommy and Daddy are having problems. Plural. Between his irresponsible (and sometimes asinine) actions, her control issues, their financial problems and all that unresolved sexual tension, The Lightman Group’s parental units are on the outs. Maybe they should try couples counseling. Or maybe they should just get a room.
  • Cal is kind of a dick. Okay, this one isn’t really news, but since he caps off the episode by telling his Leo, “You mess with my finances again, you and I are through,” it does bear repeating. Are Cal and Gillian headed for a break up?

Hey, all you subversive ninjas! At the conclusion of Lie to Me’s last season, we asked you to help spread the word through various inspired and slightly disingenuous methods, and you responded in a big way. Thanks for showing your support! Please continue to watch this space for more opportunities to take part in a little Internet hooliganry for a good cause. #LTMs3back9

  1. I didn't get to watch the whole episode, hotel rooms and thunderstorms were invovled. But I did see, and was irritated by, the lake of Reynolds closure. Although... if that means the LTM PTB might get their brains back and re-hire Mekhi Phifer, then I'm ok with it. Did that make sense?

  2. Weird recap... I don't really get your opinion - did you like it or not?
Anyway, I noticed, that now Cal is kind of a... well, bad-ass. He's behaviour in this episode was different as in whole season two. I like it more.
The Lightman Group has too many financial problems - I hope they will solve at least few of them.

  3. Yes, I did like it. If I don't like something, I won't recap it. Life is too short to spend writing about stuff that sucks. But that's part of the reason I call these "primers" instead of "recaps"... They're intended to amuse and intrigue, but my goal really isn't to encapsulate or replace the entire episode; it's to supplement it. I'd rather hit the highlights and hopefully prick the interest of anyone who's reading but hasn't yet seen that particular episode enough to go track down a copy. If you're reading but have already seen the episode, I hope to make you smile. If I can manage that, I feel like I've done okay... at least until next week, when I get a chance to screw it up all over again.

I agree, Cal is more of a bad-ass than he used to be. It's taking The Lightman Group in interesting new directions, and I'm enjoying watching the growing pains. And anything that gives Tim Roth a reason to act a little nuts is a good thing, at least in my book.

  4. It makes complete sense, and I agree. I'd love to see Mekhi Phifer come back at some point in the future, and though all this ambiguity about his character is kind of annoying, it does keep hope alive.

  5. I miss your recaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaps!!! Please don't stop writing them, you're the only one who could make me laugh about how much of a jerk Cal is being right now... :(
