For me personally Mercerdes massacred my favorite song from the play/movie Sweet Transvestite.. both in the edited lyrics (no fault of hers) and the TERRRRRIBLE arrangement! That was too bad since it left a very sour taste on the rest of the episode which was very good. Kurt, Brittany, Finn, Rachel, Tina and even Emma and Carl were great! Brittany scared me with how much she captured the mannerisms of Lil Nell as Columbia! SCARY GOOD! The whole Don't Dream It , Be it reasoning for Mercedes sining FrankNFurters role was awkward at best and without doubt the worst casting ever on Glee for a cover song
On a related not, Lea Michelle and Matt Morrison are playing the roles of Janet and Brad in the 35th aniversvary one night only Halloween performance of Rocky Horror with MANY other celebs! Just google Rocky Horror 35th anniversay show for more info if you care.
I tend to enjoy when people make songs their own... usually, but in this case it changed the premise of the song and did not fit in with the play. This was not an indivual song, rather one song in a chain of related songs in the play. Frank was not just sensational, he was transsexual. So are we too assume being bi like Santana and Brittany(and if rumors are true 2 other ACTRESSES on the show) or being gay like Kurt is ok, or being a transvesitite is ok, but NOT transsexual? The original song is about being an individual already and applies to any gender or race. It needed no changing lyrically or melodically. Then to change that one song but to not change the others in equally drastic or personal ways, again makes no sense. It would be nice to hear Mercedes sing a song once without it turning into VH1 Divas... just once. Personally I watch GLEE for the music as much or more than the relationships on the show. Like House, I think they could replace just about anyone on the series and as long as the music was good the show would be good. Maybe not Will or Sue.
I wish people would stop bashing Mercedes for playing FrankNFurter. Lets face it, in a high school in the middle of Ohio, it would be a loooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnng shot to have a guy play a transvestite in a play. I personally thought she killed the song (yes i have heard the original version) she made the song her own and no one elses. Another thing, this episode was okay but the character developement were slow and none that were life changing. The play "The Rocky Horror Glee Show" was funny, weird, and (yes obviously) bold but some of you are acting like it was the greatest musical ever. The play is one thing, controversial, and if you are pissed off that this show did not get it perfect then your expectations for a high school drama are way off. I hope we return to episodes like "Duet" because that was a great episode and also whatever happened to Sectionals or Regionals are the Glee clubers slacking off cause isn't Sectionals coming up? I just wished these were taken more serious at this point of the season.
In the end the only things I minded were the word changes in Sweet Transvestite and Touch-a Touch Me, the latter didn't work at all. I think they could have left Santana and Tina as two random extra's (but still have Santana sing the opening) they didn't really add much and paled compared to Brit and Quinn. I liked that they tried to put the outcast thing in but disliked the fact that they could have done more with it and to truly "get" what Rocky Horror is, they probably should have done more. Having said that, I really enjoyed the episode, I felt all the songs were sang well (even Sweet Transvestite) and that I was too harsh on Mercedes.
As an after thought however, Finn singing parts of Time Warp? Why? Kurt could have sang it all, I don't get why they had to change it.
Also as a more general point, I feel what they are doing with Becky is way off base. Essentially, she is being used as a device to make Sue more sympathetic, but in the end Sue is an evil character. Whilst I have no problem with a disabled child being in a show or even in a way to make Sue seem more sympathetic to the viewer, the way she was portrayed in this episode and a previous one as idolising Sue (that "funny" line "Give me Chocolate or I'll cut you" was very self centred and violent) is definitely not the way to go. As I say, having Sue change due to Becky or doing exactly what they are doing, with how Sue reacts to Becky is fine. However having Becky change to be more like Sue is plain wrong. How are we meant to sympathise for Sue, when the character that causes us to sympathise with her is as cold hearted as she is?
I was really disappointed after all the hype the last few weeks. A female doing the role of Frank has been done before- I did it once, myself, when I was with a troupe acting Rocky at the old Heights Art in Ohio. I wasn't the greatest Frank I've ever seen, but a few virgins trailed me out to the lobby when I went out to sneak a smoke, and they were disappointed that I was a girl. It seemed they mixed some of the elements from the stage play with elements from the movie, but not a good blending. And if they were going to use elements from the stage play, why not include a ballad Brad sang that changed his whole character? I was impressed, and amused, to see Barry Bostwick and Meatloaf in cameos at the beginning- did anyone else catch them?
I have to agree about leaving Tina and Santana in the background as Partygoers. Brit was PERFECT as Columbia and Quin likewise as Magenta. Tina looked cute as a Transylvanian and blue hair to me! I also feel uncomfortable with the Becky business. I think we are laughing as much with as we are laughing at the main chracters week to week, but to me it seems like we Glee-ks are laughing AT Becky more and more. I seriously am puzzled by the vocal changes in the songs... the lyrical changes as i can understand(kinda) if it was a choice to get around the censors.. and I still canot get the Mercedes as Frank bit. Sure she samg it well but it is not an R&B play... so why make that song into an R&B pop song? But having Finn sing the power vocals in Time Warp and not Kurt puzzled me. We know that Finn's (Cory's) voice is not the best so why have him do it? Now Mercedes belting out those lines I could understand since she can power out with the best of them. Maybe it was just out of Kurt/Chris' range? When I heard the streamed version of the songbefore watching it I assumed Kurt sang all the male vocals. It was shcoking to see Finn belt out the parts that Riff Raff rocks in Rocky. Overall, I thought if they did a full on recreation or performance of the play and did not concentrate on getting everyone parts in an episode it would have been very good to great. As it was, I think the multiple characters in one role kinda lowered the quality over all. O well, time to move on *jumps to the left*
I absolutly loved The Time Warp and Damn It Janet (Finn and Rachel were so adorable!)! Kurt was an awesome Riff Raff and Quinn Magenta. I wasn't all that fond of Mercedes as Frankenfurter. The whole episdose was awesome :D
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

Great episode and very entertaining. Funniest line of the night was Becky. "Now give me some chocolate or I'll cut you." LOL
ReplyDeleteWow, fantastic episode! I really loved it, all of it :)

ReplyDeleteEmma was adorable, but I think they did a poor job with a FANTASTIC musical.
