How I Met Your Mother: 'Unfinished'; Dream on

Just some quick thoughts tonight. I'm quite tired!

While not nearly as strong as the previous two episodes, 'Unfinished' was still a very fun episode of 'HIMYM'. It neatly gave us one of those stories this show does so well where the two main stories revolve around some issue that fits around a theme. Here, the theme was unfinished business.

Robin finally gets to deal with her unfinished business with Don - how that relationship ended so horribly and under such awful circumstances (for those who forget the details, Robin was offered the lead anchor job in Chicago, but she turned it down for Don, who didn't reciprocate when he was offered the gig instead). In 'Big Days', we saw Robin dealing with the break-up, but it was nice to see her get some proper closure here, tying together the phone number memory metaphor with Robin actually forgetting his number.

Though I'm not sure I agree 100% with the decision to make Ted an architect again, I liked the story enough to run with it for now. My main issue is that Ted is usually a rational guy, and it didn't make sense that he'd abandon a solid teaching gig for a company that had already screwed him over once. Plus, we got that great Death Star analogy from Marshall. I'm pretty sure this show handles Star Wars references better than any other show.

On a lesser note, there was Lily's unfinished business with the karate class. It was a bit too silly the first time, but the revenge joke at the end worked well.

And I got a kick out of seeing Barney laying the moves on Ted in order to get that 'Yes'. It gave me one of my favourite 'HIMYM' recurring storytelling devices - seeing the gang list each and every move as we cut back and forth with it working on Ted was brilliant.

A couple of quick thoughts:

- Is poop ever not a funny word? It's better than poo, crap or any other word used to describe feces. Poop.

- I don't think there's any type of clothing Jason Segel doesn't look good in. His baggy trousers from season 2, his pirate costume from season 1, and the 'funk' hat, amongst what I'm sure are others.

- I liked the minor recurring gag of Ted's student Rachel appearing with Barney. I can only assume Barney must have been intrigued by Ted's description of her and tracked her down later on. Gross/Awesome.

I hope they can keep this up.

What did everyone else think?

  1. I'm just hoping they haven't forgotten that Ted's told his future kids that Don was the love of Robin's life.

Don't get me wrong, she obviously didn't take the break-up well, but for Robin to now end up with anyone else would hardly be a happy ending for her, and there's nothing worse than a sit-com finale that deals with a bummer, such as a realisation that a major character is merely 'settling for second-best'.

Edit - then again, for all we know, this could be a red herring and the wedding we saw at the start of this season could BE Robin and Don's. But if - as the theories suggest - Ted is best man, we'll need a good reason why, since Don barely knows him and it's usually the groom that picks.

  2. I think It was better than previous episodes. Why? Don't know, but I woke up half of the house when I started to laugh. : D
Also I don't think Ted is going to quit a proffessor's job... I think he might do both in the same time - being a proffesor between monday and friday and in the meantime, he might be creating/designing this new building.

Oh, and I'm glad that producers mention the same building that we saw in season 4 (when Bilson rejected Ted's offer) - It's always nice to see some flashbacks from previous seasons.

About Robin - I was looking forward to see her with Don again, but now I see it's not gonna happen. Well, too bad.
Marshall as wingman was hillarious : D I mean - check out the scenes, when Barney says that Marshmallow is his wingman. Just hillarious. : D

PS: Rachel is a one hot chick : )

  3. i thought it was a good episode but not as good as the last two and i agree that it was silly for ted to just leave his job like that.
