As I write this recap I have just watched the season finale for Haven. Seriously?! The ending was just ..... WOW! I don't think I will be able to wait until next summer for answers! An excellent end to a season that has got better week on week.
When Haven started three months back, I wasn't sure about how much I would like this show. I found the first couple of episodes all over the place with not much footing in any direction. I have completely changed my mind since then.
Each week the show has gotten stronger with bigger mysteries and suspenseful plots all which led up to this week's finale episode. The finale went back to the pilot episode and the first 'supernatural' aspect of the show we saw, the cracks appearing around the town. At the start of the episode, we see the iconic Haven lighthouse crumble from these cracks. We also see Max Henson return to Haven. Max killed the Colorado Kid and also has the mysterious tattoo on his arm which Duke saw on the arm of the man who kills him.
We saw a different side to the characters this episode. Audrey was withdrawn, Nathan was angry and we see that Duke really is the 'bad guy'. During an argument between Nathan and the Chief, it is revealed that the Chief isn't really Nathan's father. It is in fact Max Henson. This comes after Audrey discovered that Max and Nathan have the same condition, they cannot feel anything.
Max is later killed by a crack that appears in the road which leads to Nathan becoming suspicious of Duke. It is not long before Nathan and Audrey realise however that the Chief is the person causing the cracks to appear. Nathan and Audrey find the Chief on the beach, Nathan tries his hardest to stop the Chief from killing himself but sadly fails. Nathan blames Audrey as she did not help him talk to the Chief. He lost two dads in one day and feels responsible for both.
After a heart to heart, Nathan reveals to Audrey that he feels her touch. Nathan also tells Audrey that the Priest (who is against the 'troubled') will be making sure the new Chief puts an end to the troubles in Haven.
We then get to the biggest shocker of a finale that I think I have seen in a very long time! Audrey says she is Lucy as she shares the same scar as her 'mum' did. Then, out of nowhere, another FBI agent appears who says she is Audrey Parker!!! Like .... WOW! Talk about mind-trickery! The closing scene mirrored the first scene between Audrey and Nathan which is even more crazy. I can't get my head around the ending at all, just awesome!
What I liked about Season 1
I loved the characters in the show. Audrey, Duke and Nathan had very good on screen chemistry between them. I loved the comical side between Nathan and Duke and the' lovey' side of Audrey and Nathan. The characters evolved well throughout the season and I have grown to love them.
The 'troubles' were another aspect of the show I loved. Week on week the troubles got better and better. From a person who can make stuffed animals come to life to a shape-shifter this show certainly did not lack ideas and mystery.
I really enjoyed watching the show grow each week and become stronger. It certainly did not disappoint.
What I didn't like so much
There wasn't much I disliked about Haven. The first three episodes weren't so great but as soon as the show found its footing it really got going. The main criticism I have of season one is the lack of back-story between episodes two and ten. It was almost as though Audrey had forgotten why she was in Haven and that side of the story didn't really develop much. Saying that, after watching the finale and knowing Haven has a season two, I feel the writers probably did the right thing. It was important for us to learn as much about Haven as possible and by pushing Audrey's connection to the back, this was achieved. Season 2 already looks set to show us more about Lucy/Audrey and the new Audrey (confusing much?).
So that was Haven season one. Thirteen episodes of mystery and supernatural events. I was so happy to hear the show had a season two, it is very well deserved. After watching the finale, I'm not sure if I can wait nine months for season two, I guess I have no choice though! I for one will be counting down to season two.
What did everyone else think of Haven?

I know what you mean. What I meant is while I was watching it I was a bit like I wanna know more about Audrey but upon reflection, it was certainly the right decision as you say :)
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you what you said about the whole season getting better and better each episode.
ReplyDeleteDon't really agree with you about Audreys background part. Of course we want more information and maybe the writers should have shown a more desperate/pushing for answers Audrey. But remember, the people didn't talk to a outsider, or about that day at all.
@ Lourdes
I doubt it, she is clearly troubled, that would conflict with the priests ideas.
It took me watching the entire season to really decide that I really like this show. I was wondering if the show was going to get any better, but it proved me wrong! I enjoy the chemistry between the Audrey, Nathan and Duke. There were a few times that I thought that Nathan was emotionally and physical stoic, but I think that was just part of his character.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that Syfy decided to renew this show. The way that the season ended left a lot of questions that I am excited to see answered.
i loved all of this last epi, but what i also found brilliant was the doctors daughter (sorry forgot her name). When she was talking to Duke about the tattoo in the boat, when she got somewhat angry at him, the tattoo showed on her shoulder!! thought that was a brilliant twist to it. Also found it intertesting that she is getting close to audrey, who people dont want around. But i may be going of in a different direction. :) Love it!!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting also Julia. I've been wide eyed when I saw the tattoo appearing on her shoulder. May she be related to the priest? Will she be a part of some sort of sect that don't want troubled people on Haven? Does she really care about Audrey or is all part of a plan? Will she be the one killing Duke? I can't wait nine months!!!!
ReplyDeleteooooo I totally missed that!! Great twist! such an awesome episode
ReplyDeleteI doubt it. It would have been too short notice to change the ending I would have thought. I think they knew it was going to be renewed though. With an ending like that it HAD to be haha
ReplyDeleteReally glad I made it through the first couple of episodes as it really got better each week. The ending was great and I can't wait till next season. I wonder if they had a different ending planned had it not been renewed?
ReplyDeleteOne of the creators was asked that question a few days ago via twitter. He indicated they had not planned for any other ending. In previous tweets, he also indicated that they were already working on stories for season 2 despite not knowing if they would get renewed.
