Welcome to my review of Glee episodes 202 and 203, “Britney/Brittany” and “Grilled Cheesus”.

BRITNEY/BRITTANY
Unlike the considerably well-handled Madonna episode, Britney/Brittany failed to deliver a good ‘themed’ episode. There are numerous things I have issue with.

1. Jacob. This is undoubtedly my biggest issue with this episode. Creepy, inappropriate, unrealistic... lines like “wanky wanky” and screaming “don’t stop!” while thrusting in the Glee club’s performance of Toxic was hugely cringe-worthy and not at all funny. Why the writers thought it clever to include any of the Jacob scenes in this episode is beyond me. The girl behind him screaming “I wanna be that hot” and “Mr Schu I wanna be your Britney” was equally repulsive and unrealistic. Yes, Glee dabbles in the unrealistic and over exaggerates things, but this was awful and humourless.

2. The sex riot. This ties in to the Jacob issues, but it also beyond me how the school would get so enthusiastic about the New Directions performing Toxic, yet undoubtedly the Glee club will still be the most unpopular thing at school in coming episodes. Not to mention the over reaction at the fire alarm going off, Sue’s ridiculous response to the dancing, Jacob getting knocked over and carried out and Sue getting injured is all just ridiculous. Watch the scene again where the crowd surge towards Sue; she starts spinning yet nobody is even close to her.

3. Will. Will’s character was so unbelievable and annoying in this episode; yes, he was trying to be different for Emma, but buying the same car as her current boyfriend? That just screams desperate, and I don’t think Will would be like that. Not to mention him performing in Toxic being highly inappropriate for a school teacher.

4. The incorporation of the songs. I’m not the biggest fan of Britney Spears, but the only way the writers could think of coming up with including the songs is to drug-induce everyone? In the Madonna episode, the songs made sense to the storyline (Like A Virgin for example), yet here they were just thrown in to make it a Britney Spears episode.

Let me forget the large negative list, and focus on some good points; the dancing was impeccable, Brittany was hilarious (“Finn can fly?”) and the songs were a nice homage to the original Britney videos which was a nice touch.

However, at the end of the day, this episode failed to deliver anything exciting and I thought it was the worst episode of Glee to date. That is, until I saw the following episode.

Grilled Cheesus

Perhaps the most depressing episode of Glee ever. Whilst it is good to deal with real life issues like this, in a comedy programme it’s not the thing you most want to see. Let me start by saying I am an atheist. However, I feel the episode struggled with finding a balance between the religious beliefs of people and the atheist beliefs of Kurt (who luckily, despite my dread, did not become a believer in the end of the episode). I have heard religious people say they felt insulted about how the issue was handled in the episode, which I can agree with. As an atheist also, however, I felt the issue of God was too strongly focused on. It is OK for people to have their individual beliefs, but in the episode I felt I was being forced to hear how religion is make-believe, whilst also being forced to hear how religion is wonderful. There was no real balance that I could see and it did not sit right with me. The songs, though well sung, were not at all enjoyable for me to watch; most notably Rachel’s. Puck’s song seemed to come out of nowhere. On the plus side, however, I did enjoy Kurt’s song.

But that’s the only plus side I can see for this episode.

It feels like Glee reached it’s peak in the first half of Season One... the second of that season felt far weaker, however. And now? Glee seems to have hit rock bottom. Can it ever pick itself back up? I hope so. I really do, because I loved Glee. I’m not so sure however.

I want to hear your thoughts about the episodes. So comment away! Or join me in discussing the episode on the forums at http://www.spoilertv.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=162&t=21370

  3. Ok, dont usually respond, although i read every post on here, but i would like to give my 2 cents on the past 2 episodes. To start, the 2 episodes , being that they were almost polar opposites, gave the show that well deserved "balance" ppl r talkin about. For episode 2, Brittany was the best and im glad they focused on her. The rest of the episode did seem scattered, but guys its only episode 2 out of 23, let them have a lil fun with it. BTW the inappropriate behaviour from jacob n the wrestling girl, was the best reaction they couldve had, being that Sue just made the comment that Britney was "gateway drug" for promiscuous behavior, so y wouldnt ppl behave like animals when hearing Britney. For episode 3, Kurt was the man, I was glad he stuck to his morals and beliefs although he played the douche card to all his friends. The music was not my favorite but the show always sets it up so that in context they work perfectly. "I wanna hold your hand" was Kurt's best song.

  4. Yeah, I feel like Glee is getting a lot of undeserved buzz for crappy writing. The Grilled Cheezus episode was more depressing than enjoyable and as a religious person, I don't think they handled the issue well at all. Plus, Plus, Finn loses his religion because his grilled cheese wasn't a direct line to God? What? This show is truly awful.

Lastly, can we let the Kurt and his father storylines die already. I want some new storylines that don't involve Rachel, Finn, Kurt or Quinn. It's a HUGE cast and they only ever use a fraction of them and the rest of them are just plot devices. So annoying.

  5. Really? I seem to be in the minority in thinking his teary eyed staring isn't all that impressive.

  6. Or too anti-religious... depends on how you want to look at it. It just wasn't a good episode over all.

  7. I actually liked both episodes. I agree that episode two wasn't the best and, to repeat what youtuber Michael Buckley said in his review, there was about 30 seconds of actual plot development but I liked it. It's good to sometimes just throw a fun episode in there every now and then in my opinion.

Episode three however I disagree with; I loved it. I'm an atheist too but I still found myself loving even the religious themed songs. I think they did focus a lot on the small minority of people who either are completely intolerant to religion and the people who push their religion on people but, one of the main things of Glee is they over-exaggerate stereotypes. I was also glad that, by the end, there were still some non-religious people in the group but half the time with the rest I was going "Wait, they were religious?" (with the exception of Mercedes, Rachel, Quinn and Puck)

Edit: Also, I didn't really see how it could be taken as offensive. While some of the characters were presented as being against others beliefs, I think that by the end they had all sort of just accepted that that was how they felt.

  9. The review regarding episode 2.03 is pretty bad. I mean, there can never be balance between faith and lack thereof. The episode showed both p.o.v.'s beautifully, and so what if it was a bit more heavy? This is not only a comedy show, but a dramedy one, every once in a while there will be some darker stories. The songs performed are classics everyone (supposedly) knows and loves, and they were performed amazingly well, particularly "Losing My Religion" and "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". I wasn't really looking forward to this episode before it aired, but now that it has, I have to say it is probably the best episode they've dealt us so far. It's not offensive at all, unless for some who can be very easily offended. I respect your opinion and religious belief, even though I don't agree with them. This episode was perhaps not as good showing the characters being tolerant of each other's faiths, but people are always like that, unfortunately. It doesn't get more realistic than that. Overall, great show, no doubt about it. Loved Chris Colfer's, Cory Monteith's, and also Jane Lynch's and Jayma Mays' performances, mostly.

  10. I hear complaints about Jacob's behavior in episode 2.02 everywhere I go. Is it weird I actually found him funny?...

  11. The Brittney episode made me want to puke.
And the Grilled Cheesus episode was too religious.

I thought this season was going to have less singing? Because so far, this season sort of blows with the choice in music...

  12. Oh agreed, Colfer's acting was superb.

  13. i agree with all the comments on the britney episode it was kinda cringe worthy with all the jacob scenes. however i completly disagree with the comments about grilled cheesus. i believe it was one of the best episodes to date and chris colfer deserves an award by far his best perfomaance to date (in both acting and singing). i dont think it was depressing i think it was realistic. glee is a comedy but i feel it's neccessary for a serious episode every now and again. i felt they dealt with issues over religion and why people turn to/away from religion.. also the songs, (apart from pucks song which i didnt see the point of) were well chosen and sung well. all in all a completly great episode!!

  15. I thought this episode was OK, not great but OK and certainly a vast improvement over last week. I didn't think it was so black and white, we saw several different versions of faith and spirituality, and different reasons why people don't believe in God or why they turn away from faith. None were all that well developed but this is Glee, there is only room for so much deep thinking when they have to fit in 4 songs and a bunch of comedy.

And for a change their were no lame racist jokes, no Jacob Ben Israel, and Rachel was reined in. IMHO she has become so unlikeable that I am not sure the writers can do anything to make me like her or feel any sympathy for her whatsoever.
