So, we're 4-5 weeks into the fall 2010 season of television. There's a lot going on in television right now (not necessarily all good things, as the batch of new shows this season seems to be subpar...or really, more like awful, but I digress) and I just wanted to ask how everyone was doing at this point in the season, pre-November Sweeps. Which shows are you watching? Which shows are really surprising you with how great they've become since last season? Which shows are you regretting having on that DVR? I'll give the rundown on how my season is going as of now:

My main shows/Favorites so far this season:

FRINGE is having a hell of an arc for the first half of the 3rd season! In just four episodes it feels like so much ground has been covered: Olivia is battling a traumatizing identity crisis after the abominable Walternate (Who scares the hell out of me increasingly with every scene he is in!) subjects her to experimental memory exchanges with Fauxlivia's brain tissue (more on Fauxlivia later) and lets her loose into the world with the Fringe Division of the alt-world. In the alt-world we see that while Walternate may be a super-scheming scary guy, not all of the alt-world is so bad, (The Cab driver, Scarlie, and the charming Agent Lincoln) and that their world has problems just like we do. (Actually, they have completely different fringe events "Over there" that have claimed hundreds of thousands of lives ever since the emergence of the Pattern around 25 years ago... So...maybe our world doesn't have it so bad after all)
Meanwhile, in our world, Fauxlivia has taken her place as head of the Alt-world initiative to be...well, abominable and mysterious. She seemingly has been sent to manipulate Peter and Walter into some sort of circumstance that probably doesn't bode well for us--or at least this is what I'm gathering from the strongly-written, super-teasing direction things are going in. We're discovering shapeshifters in high places (a well-placed agent had every detail about every Fringe phenomenon and investigation for the last 2 years, when Agent Dunham showed up) and through Newton's (untimely) suicide, we realize that
one of the characters we thought for so long had to be a hugely-influential part of the process was just another pawn to be sacrificed. The implications of his death are immense, and really start to ramp up the urgency of this situation, to me at least.
one of the characters we thought for so long had to be a hugely-influential part of the process was just another pawn to be sacrificed. The implications of his death are immense, and really start to ramp up the urgency of this situation, to me at least. From the storyline aspect to the execution of these episodes, the production team, the cast, the writers are all on top of their game. The episodes are perfectly-paced, and it feels like a different sort of episode every week! They have also perfected the half-procedural, half-mythological sharing 1 episode formula perfectly as well. As for the acting: I've been completely blown away by Anna Torv's performances this season. She has been able to shift between two different sides of Olivia in such subtle yet startlingly powerful ways! Fauxlivia is having to fake out Peter and impersonate our Olivia, and at times you can see the effort Fauxlivia has to make to calculate how our Olive would react to what's going on, and I love that she isn't 100% capable of keeping up pretenses all the time, it just makes the whole ordeal more believable and great! And our Olivia shifting back and forth between her mannerisms and the aspects of Fauxlivia without meaning to just stuns me.
Onto the more abbreviated appearances of John Noble, on our side, Walter is as lovable and crazy as ever, but there are differences in the works, and you can see that something about Walter is changing--probably for the better. He seems
more coherent (He finally got Astrid's name right last week!) and ready to move into his role as the head of Massive Dynamic. Walternate, however, is (as I've already stated) the scariest thing on tv right now. His intellect+his strong will to destroy our world makes me feel faint-hearted. Such a commanding presence that is completely different from the Walter we know and love. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances unfolding in this season, so far we see minimal Peter. Joshua Jackson is still doing quite well, in between his scenes with Fauxlivia (He just HAS to know, right? Those knowing eyes betray him--He MUST be playing her, right?? This is me hoping so...) and those haunting images of Peter pushing our Olivia back to us is just the right amount of charming, spooky, and heartfelt. Overall, if things stay the way they are now, this might be the best season Fringe has ever had!

Overall, if things stay the way they are now, this might be the best season Fringe has ever had!THE GOOD WIFE on the surface looks like another CBS soulless procedural. Well, if you think that, then you'd be completely wrong. This show is the best Network legal drama I've seen since Damages! The characters and the writing, and the cases all crackle. Kalinda (Liela?) is the definition of badass with a side of mystery. When she takes a baseball bat to new competitor Blake's car (played brilliantly by Scott Porter of Friday Night Lights fame), steals his documentation and then finds him standing at her car waiting for her in retaliation, she gets in his face. "Too close?" She teases. Then she brings up the bullets she found in his trunk "Been shooting deer, or you compensating for something?" He coolly replies "I'm...invested..." She gets even closer and a sudden look of shock comes over his face as (out of the camera's view) she cops a feel of his junk. "Oh, you are invested..." she sneers as she brushes him off and leaves. That'll teach him to stir up shit at work.

Meanwhile, Alicia Florrick's life is once again dragged into the dirt of her husband's new campaign. Balancing her morals and her strengths, she has taken out a few arbitrary judges, and a lawyer or two along the way of this season. Eli, Mr. Florrick's PR man has become a full-time character, and thank God, because Alan Cumming's performance has been equally hilarious and enthralling as he desperately tries to keep The Florrick Campaign out of the traps laid by the press, the politicians, and the other similar instances of scandal regarding politicians and their "good wives." There is so much to love about this series, and with every episode, it seems to just get better and better, in a similar fashion to how I described the season of Fringe so far. Absolutely outstanding dialogue all around gives me chills several scenes at a time. If you like character development, witty displays of power, and the occasional twist, The Good Wife is killing it so far this season.
THE VAMPIRE DIARIES started out probably as bad as the Twi-hard "saga" but after a few episodes it turned into generally compelling television, and had some great twists, and the acting wasn't Godawful, either. This season, it seems to have hit a new level of quality, and is definitely defining itself as the teen True Blood, not the TwiVamp Show. We're only 6 episodes into the season and the show has already let loose the thrills, gore, and killing of characters. The writing is actually very good at amping up drama and yet remaining self-aware, and therefore, not nauseatingly annoying, (they have some of Joss Whedon's writers on board, so that
shouldn't be too much of a surprise) and Katherine is a great addition to the show. I sometimes find it hard to believe that this show is for the teenage girls because (especially episode 2.06) it can be downright disgusting at times, (I feel like Supernatural has had some influence on this show sometimes--the brotherly relationship, the random and brutal gory parts, etc.) It makes for some pretty good television.

However, that doesn't mean it isn't good. It's a common joke that a meh episode of Supernatural is still better than all the medical and cop procedurals on television, and that mantra has held up well over the years. I want to keep this short because I have a lot of ambivalence so far for certain aspects of this season: some of it I believe is part of the writers' plan for this season, but some of it is a feeling that something might be missing from the equation of the show...I'm not sure, but this is something I want to think about for now, until we get further into the season. The first episode I thought
was pretty great, and the second was a great intro to the alpha storyline along with the continuance of the "WTF is wrong with Sam!?" arc. I have to say that the mystery in this season really is working out for me, and mainly my issues are diminutive and (based on what I've noted from the spoilertv SPN articles) not felt by the general Supe community. I just feel like it hasn't quite hit its stride yet this season, and the storyline, while really promising, is wavering a bit. The pacing is all over the place in episodes "The Third Man" and "Live Free or Twihard" but the episode "Weekend at Bobby's" was absolutely a perfectly crafted episode that delivered on all fronts for me, so I still trust the marvelous team of writers at Supernatural's disposal.

SMALLVILLE is Smallville so far. Generally good acting, spurts of great writing in between small hiccups of cheesiness and rehashed ideas. The 200th episode was wonderful, as was the season premiere. Even "Isis" wasn't so bad, but the fact remains that this show is right outside its expiration date. (How many times has a chick from this show been possessed by a random enraged spirit!?) I love that stupid new reporter for The Daily Planet: "I will never understand liberals." She's just the right amount of adorable, annoying, and stupid to keep me interested. The humor on Smallville has always been cutesy, witty, and sometimes hilarious. This tradition continues in season 10, and helps keep the scenes light and entertaining. The guest stars, and the looks into the future, and above all, the plot progression is (FINALLY) being allowed to reach a climax. Let me quote Lois on this one: "What took you so long!?" (when Clark Finally came out to her as the blur, cue really adorable and yet sexy Lois tackle.) This show may be long in the tooth, but it's still in touch with its former glory(or should I say reclaimed glory?) and its audience.
LIFE UNEXPECTED may not be expected to live much longer. (Whoaaa pun-ny irony!?) The ratings are abysmal (even for CW standards) and the core female audience The CW yearns for is slowly dwindling. This is really unfortunate because the show is still a great melodramatic family series with spunk. All the characters are delightfully (and heavily) flawed, but still relatable, and the little (and sometimes really big) unexpected events just keep coming this way for Cate and her little brood. There's already been some high points for the writing, and the arc of the season (no back 9 so far, so it may be a short season...) but I implore you to check out this show that's not afraid to break the hearts of every character in the show (and therefore the viewer--if the viewer has a freakin' heart, that is) just to build them back up into stronger people. Sounds a lot like how life works doesn't it?

MEDIUM was pretty good last season after its switch from NBC to CBS, but it felt like a "safe" sort of season that lacked really good arcs that lasted longer than 2 episodes--understandably so, since it was on a new network and a new night. (In a death slot on Friday, no less...) So when this season opened up with heavy-hitting multiple arcs that dealt with Detective Scanlon's family history, a dramatic change for the Dubois' as Ariel is going to college, and Allison's gift still causing the usual (sleep-deprived) issues, complete with excellent writing, and great acting from all the Dubois, I was just so happy. This show has always been overlooked in my opinion, for some truly great (and truly horrific) hours of television, and now it's back in full force, rebounded back to the excellence of the first 4 seasons. Unfortunately, it looks like this is the last season, as its ratings are falling way too low for CBS to keep. Oh well, it was great while it lasted, so let's make the most out of this season and keep the thrills coming!
Other good shows so far this season:
30 Rock
Community
Dexter (What's to explain, it's ALWAYS amazing...)
Weeds
The Big C
Summer Favorites that Just Ended:
RUBICON went from almost unwatchably boring to the best new show on television this past summer. The last 6-7 episodes of the season drew the goosebumps from me with every little detail leading to a conspiracy that really did merit all intrigue. The cast was well-composed (Kale Ingram is the ultimate badass on this show) and with some tragically powerful twists, the season ended on a note that left me begging for more. I won't go into any details so as not to give away any of the (awesome) plot.
MAD MEN hit a new level this season when it reinvented itself as a dark comedy--ok I kid--but there was a fresh layer of hilarity added to this conceptually and almost consistently dark drama. While Don Draper hit the lowest of the low and rebuilt himself (well, in a way, at least) Betty Draper went off the deep end, Sally Draper hit some existential issues, and Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce went under suddenly when their main client Lucky Strike decided to take another direction. Through Peggy's tropes into the underground realm of the budding anti-establishment movement and gaining a stronger hold on her own perspective, and Joan's subtle changes and rather important decisions, and all the perfectly-laid out drama in between, Mad Men sizzled this summer. The episode "The Suitcase" alone is worth a dozen emmys. I think this year Mad Men deserves an emmy nod more than it did in any of the previous years. (which could be problematic because it has won every year since its debut and this year might be the year they decide to go in another direction) I don't know how I am going to live without my weekly dose of Peggy and Don until August 2011! Ok, now back to shows currently on television!
Between Watchable and Awful:
Law & Order: SVU. (Not good! The writing has gone out the window)
The Event (Watchable, but awful dialogue and not enough depth yet)
Outsourced (stupid.)
SH!T MY DAD SAYS (Abhorrent. Tepid. Disgusting.)
glee: (More than just watchable, but while the writing is good, it's hit or miss as usual, and the characters can be so annoying at times. Still, it has heart, and Ryan Murphy generally knows what he's doing...Plus Jane Lynch is just awesome.)
No Ordinary Family (Same as The Event. Watchable but there's not much to it that keeps me there... even with Julie Benz.)
Onto a different sort of analysis:
This season, the trend of dropping ratings seems to continue. For the first time in several years, almost all of the new shows (14 out of 19 in all I believe) have been branded as failures in terms of ratings. There seems to be a competition between certain shows on certain networks that are blatantly competing with each other to see which will not be cancelled (there's a few battles like this every year, but this year is a bit more intense for my viewings):
FOX
On Fox, there seems to be a fight between Fringe, Lie to Me, Human Target, and The Good Guys: I'm expecting at least 2 to be cancelled and at least one exiled to Summer next season. My prediction: The Good Guys+Human Target are cancelled, Lie to Me moved to Summer, Fringe either stays on Thursdays at 9 or moved to Friday slot.
NBC
While the ratings at NBC are in a freefall and all the new shows so far have been picked up for full seasons (pretty desperate) this leaves a rather big issue for the comedies of Thursday, most importantly, Parks & Recreation and/or Community.. Outsourced has been slated to have a full season, and Parks & Rec. is slated to come in midseason. Community (forced to start the night and go against the behemoth The Big Bang Theory, is not doing well for the ratings) is looking pale, and the prospects of Parks & Rec. Midseason debut is looking sketchy. My prediction?: I have none, as all logic regarding handling a television schedule is out the window on NBC.
CBS
While, generally everything is successful this season on CBS, there's a few midseason replacements that are going to be tried out, and while the new shows may be doing well, they might not be doing good enough to not warrant being replaced after November sweeps.
This situation: It seems The Defenders and The Good Wife are competing for which show will be able to stay on their night and which will be banished to Friday/replaced by Criminal Minds 2. So far, The Good Wife, with its emmy buzz and its slightly better ratings is making it hard for The Defenders to be a good choice to keep, not to mention, The Defenders premieres in the slot directly after Criminal Minds, what's a better place for them to put the spin-off?
ABC
Generally there's not much going on around ABC that I am aware of: if you know anything big happening between shows, just post below!
So, there's my general thoughts on the progression of this season so far, with regards to the efforts of the showrunners/writers/actors, etc. and how strongly the shows themselves are doing ratings-wise. What shows have caught your eye this season? Which shows are making you wish you never watched them? Which shows do you think will make it to next season? Which shows do you want to be vocal about and spread the word on? Do you disagree with my thoughts on certain shows?
Just sound off below in the comments!

This was really good article, even though I don't watch some of the shows listed. Nonetheless, it was great. The fall shows that I watch every week are:
ReplyDeleteTuesday:
Sons of Anarchy(FX)
Wednesday:
The Middle(ABC)
Better With You(ABC)
Modern Family(ABC)
Cougar Town(ABC)
Terriers(FX)
Thursday:
30 Rock(NBC)
The Office(NBC)
Outsourced(NBC)
Grey's Anatomy(ABC)
Private Practice(ABC)
Sunday:
Desperate Housewives(ABC)
Boardwalk Empire(HBO)
I usually have Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays off :)
Out of these my favorites are:
Sons Of Anarchy(FX)
The Office(NBC)
30 Rock(NBC)
Outsourced(NBC)
Modern Family(ABC)
Cougar Town(ABC)
Private Practice(ABC)
I noticed I don' watch a lot of the big popular shows(Although, I've started to watch Supernatural thanks to everyone's shining reviews on this site, and it's been really good) I've been trying to pick off some shows that I don't need to watch. So far I've taken Chase, The Event, and Undercovers out of my schedule. I'm thinking the next one out will be Boardwalk Empire, even though I was initially really excited about it and it started off great it hasn't grasped my attention and I'm already 2 episodes behind.
Anyways...Reading over this was interesting and helpful. Keep 'em coming Wilson :]
OOOOooh Thanks for asking! I'm a bit of a TV Phile with 3 DVRs (one of which can record 2 things at once. I'll try not to meander too much.
ReplyDeleteFringe: I'm finding this season uneven...and 'waitable' Which is to say. There are shows I must watch before I go to bed and others I'll catch up on eventually. I hated the pilot of Fringe but kept watching because of Walter then go hooked into the story. This season I find the Fauxlivia story dull (right now every one of her plans/quests basically succeed by the end of the hour and I'm left feeling...why bother. I don't think she and Peter have much chemistry. Which is odd considering..same actors.) Olivia's story is interesting. She's got something to discover and a fight to fight. I'm interested and intrigued. What's gonna happen? Will she figure it out? Will she save her self? I don't get that with Fauxlivia's story. So...only Okay
No Ordinary Family: Jury is still out. It feels right now as though the show hasn't decided what it wants to be. Family drama, super hero story. Grade school family drama or edgy teen level action. Comedy. I just don't know...
Supernatural: I'm not having any of the problems you're having with this season. (I wasn't as happy with the latest ep (Twihard) ) I've really enjoyed all of the episodes so far though the new characters are just not working for me. I used to listen to people criticize the first few eps of a season of Buffy. But by the third season I had learned that that show told a full season story and, invariably, while the first few eps would have flaws if I re-watched them one we'd reached the end of the arc..the set up had been much better than when seen cold. I could give the show the time because Joss Whedon always had a plan and I could trust that. This season of Supernatural, in particular, feels a little like that. I'm not as certain that the trip will prove to have been worth it. But as I said...not disappointed at all in the first few episodes and I'm willing to go with the flow until we find out what the story is.
Chuck: OMG Making Morgan a "spy" was genius! I am loving this season.
Dexter: Awesome as usual
Nikita: I was so bored by the pilot. Maggie Q isn't one of my favorite actresses. I stored eps 2-4 on my DVR and started watching one evening when I was bored. Watched all three in one sitting.
Vampire Diaries: "Teen True Blood"!?!??!?! Please tell me that's only cause there are teens in the lead. LOL. I was set to hate this show. Got hooked. This season is must see (though I'm worried I'm going to get sick of the super villain. :-) I really hope not, but right now "Loving it!" Damon is one of the most interesting characters on TV right now. imho.
The Event: I keep bouncing back and forth between no desire to watch and intrigued by a story point. I wanted to hands down like this show because I am a Blair Underwood fan. But why is Jason Ritter's story line the main storyline? There are so many elements I've seen before...Eh.
Okay stopping there.
Old Shows I love: 90210, Life Unexpected, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill,America's Next Top Model, Desperate Housewives<,Vampire Diariesbr>New Shows: Nikita, Hellcats
ReplyDeleteI sometimes watch Big Bang Theory.
I also kinda like Raising Hope
thanks for the Life Unexpected plug! i agree--this show is absolutely FANTASTIC!! & i just wish more ppl would give it a chance. i know if they just watched one ep, they'd fall in love!
ReplyDeleteYou should check out Modern Family. Genius.
ReplyDeleteOh and I agree with you for Supernatural (although I loved "Live free or Twihard") and Fringe (only ones I watch of the shows in your article). I am really impressed also by Anna Torv this year.
one tree hill is great
ReplyDeletenew shows:
ReplyDeleteI've probably never tried less new shows than this year, none of them really stood out to me. I AM watching The Event now though and it's pretty good, I like mystery but you shouldn't expect too much.
Also watching Boardwalk Empire. The pilot was phenomenal, unfortunately the next few episodes weren't that great but the last ones were awesome and I can't wait for Monday's to come now.
I also tried "Shit My Dad Says" but thought the pilot was really awful.
Oh and "The Walking Dead" looks amazing as well!
favorites:
Fringe, Dexter & The Big Bang Theory I'd say. TBBT is as funny as it never was, Fringe has one of the best plots I've ever seen and Dexter is (as you pointed out) always great.
summer shows:
I recently catched up on Rubicon as well. I didn't love it but the entire conspiracy was great no doubt. Maybe they could've done the finale a bit better so if it won't get renewed (which is what I'm thinking :() they have soo many cliffhangers. :(
Rescue Me's new season was really disappointing.
Don't think I've watched any other summer shows. I usually use the summer to watch some old shows.
Between Watchable and Awful:
HIMYM is pretty weak this season so far but I'll keep watching nonetheless.
Family Guy gets worse and worse every season, just like The Simpsons.
Sons of Anarchy has started off pretty low this season but is getting better.
All the other shows I'm watching are pretty good I guess :P
still pissed off they killed off MASON LOCKWOOD!!!
ReplyDeleteI love random British shows like Skins and Misfits. XD
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are: First - Fringe, season 3 is just FANTASTIC! I'm absolutely in love with this show!
ReplyDeleteNext - House, although I miss 13 :(
Also, I've started to watch Raising Hope, and enjoyed it so far.
Faves: House, Glee, Criminal Minds, Modern Family, The Office, Private Practice, Smallville, Dexter and Desperate Housewives!
ReplyDeleteNew Shows : Lost Girl , The Event , The Walking Dead , Nikita and Mike and Molly
ReplyDeleteOLD: Gossip Girl , Vampire Diaries, Cougar Town, Being Erica, Lie to Me, Weeds
also V , True Blood, 18 TO LIFE and Damages when they air
#1 new show overall is Lost Girl for me
seasons behind but still watching Smallville and 30 Rock
Unfortunately, that show is dead. :( Sorry, Manu.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, I don't want to sound mean but don't you think that train has left the station. All the Kyle XY people are working on different shows already. I think one of Supernatural's new writers is from Kyle XY.
ReplyDeleteI just Hope any one of these networks pick up "Kyle XY"..One of the Best sci-fi drama show ever made..Too bad ABC didn't see its complete potential..
ReplyDeleteI think the main improvement in season 3 is Oliva's character. She finally has an interesting storyline before I was only interested when the episode was about Peter or Walter.
ReplyDeleteThe first 4 episodes were really good. I loved episode 3.
SO FAR FRINGE ROCKED TV !
ReplyDeleteFavorites: Bones- I always love Bones :)
ReplyDeleteFringe- Stuck around after the Bones premier, and just the first episode of season 3 was so good, I watched the rest of the series. I'm LOVING it. And season 3 just keeps getting better!
Dexter- like you said, always good!
Also Good: Vampire Diaries- liking it better this season, although the newest episode I didn't like as much as the others.
Castle- seems to have gotten better this season.
House- pretty good so far.
Favorite summer shows: Psych, White Collar
If only I had FX. *Sniffle* I miss that channel. I don't have AMC either but I make weekly trips to family's houses to get my Mad Men+Rubicon+Breaking Bad fix. XD
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are Supernatural, The Mentalist, and NCIS: LA. But I also watch NCIS, Criminal Minds, Bones, Hellcats, and maybe CSI: NY(if I'm really bored on Friday). I think that so far this season of Supernatural has been the best season since season 3, and NCIS: LA has improved a lot this year since they've added Deeks.
ReplyDeleteI actually cut it down...there are shows I didn't even mention that I'm enjoying this season like Cougar Town, etc. just cause I don't watch them every week. I am like addicted to tv in a bad BAD way. lol
ReplyDeleteAlso, half my faves aren't even on tv at the moment! (Can't wait for Damages :) )
Ha lol. The first one is always the most nerve-wracking :)
ReplyDeleteMy new faves besides Rubicon, Boardwalk Empire(and probaly thereafter, The Walking Dead) this late summer/fall is for sure these shows:
ReplyDeleteTerriers
Mike & Molly
The Defenders
Law And Order: Los Angeles(im a sucker for L&O-shows, and i love Terrence Howard and Alfred Molina)
After that Hawaii Five-O, Nikita, The Event and No Ordinary Family is those shows i just have in case i get bored.
From before i have shows like Bored To Death, Eastbound & Down(Kenny Powers, fuck yeah), Modern Family, Sons of Anarchy, House, Dexter, Weeds, and Chuck that i still somehow manage to keep up with somehow.
It`s sad that Lone Star didnt make it further. And shows like The Defenders, Terriers, The Good Guys and so on, probaly wont make it further to.
Oh wow, I'm completely invested in Fringe this season. I just can't get over the subtleties and the hints and the parallelism to the 1st and 2nd seasons. I'm just rolling in the love for Fringe lately. lol
ReplyDeleteDude. How much TV do you watch :P
ReplyDeleteLove the analysis though. It's all good stuff.
I've been watching only Fringe, House & The Office so far religiously. Awesome that Timothy Olyphant is on The Office atm.
I ahve watched 2 episodes of The Event, 1 Hawaii 5-0 and 1 Nikita. Loved HAwaii 5-0 but just haven't got round to it really, The Event was good but didn't LOST me, but I'll get back to it :)
I've been meaning to check out Blue Bloods. Is it worth it? I've heard great things about it. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, the differences 2 opinions can have. lol
ReplyDeleteBut don't get me wrong: I do like this story better than the apocalypse storyline, but I believe that the first 3-4 episodes last season were quite a bit better overall. (it was around episodes 8-14 that it got lost in the sea of standalones and threw me off)
Thanks Dark! It took a little while but I really enjoyed it. :) I look forward to more very, very soon!
ReplyDeleteI've ironed out a couple formatting errors and 2-3 typos, overall I am glad I didn't have any glaringly awful errors. :P
My 2 favorite shows are Smallville and Supernatural and I have not been disappointed so far this season. I think that Smallville is having it's best season to date. Every episode has been amazing. I love the connection between Clark/Tom Welling & Lois/Erica Durance My favorite episode is Homecoming. The journey that Clark is on to becoming Superman has been an awesome ride for the last 10 years. The writers seem to be wrapping thing up nice and I think it will be real believable the Clark will be the Superman we all know and love. Supernatural is always good my favorite episode was weekend at Bobby's but I love them all. Vampire Diaries has been great and it gets better each week. Other shows I have really been enjoying is Criminal Minds, Hawaii Five O, Medium, Blue Bloods, Noe Ordinary Family, Raising Hope, House, Chuck, Lie to Me, Mentalist, Hellcats, Nikita, Fringe and Bones. I think my favorite new show has to be Hawaii Five O followed closely by Hellcats
ReplyDeletewouldn't call it a must-see as there are a lot of sloppy things but personally as a mystery fan I really enjoy it as well :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are Glee (It may be hit or miss but its a lot better than other popular comedies), Smallville, Supernatural, Fringe, Life UneXpected, Community, Hawaii Five-O, and No Ordinary Family.
ReplyDeleteAgreed :) I'm really enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteAlso the new show that everyone should see is The Event.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite shows right now are Castle, Smallville, Bones and Life Unexpected.
ReplyDeleteRegarding #supernatural: I'm just the opposite. I think this season is a step up from the Apocalypse storyline, a real breath of fresh air with fantastic writing and just the right pacing. The overall plot is quite intriguing and even the episodic plots are interesting. Weekend at Bobby's was... good, an entertaining ep about a beloved recurring character, but one was enough, wouldn't want to see something like that week in, week out. I liked The Third Man and Live Free or Twihard better, definitely.
ReplyDeleteOther shows that I watch are H50, Castle, NCIS, NCIS:LA, Bones, The Mentalist and Smallville. Of those, I like NCIS best, hands down.
Good choices!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love:
ReplyDelete*SMALLVILLE*
Good shows; Human Target, Chuck, No Ordinary Family, V, and White Collar
Welcome Wilson, I'll give it a read later and post some of my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteFavorites: Smallville!!! Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, Desperate Housewives, Castle, NCIS: LA, Human Target and V. New shows i like: The Event, No Ordinary Family, and Nikita.
ReplyDeleteI also like Cougar Town not favorite tho.
Welcome to the site as a writer Wilson and congrats on your first article, nice one :)
ReplyDeleteThis year, my shows are (in order of priority):
ReplyDeleteSupernatural (kind of funky this season but awesome anyway), Glee, Fringe, The Vampire Diaries (I don't even know why I like it, but I'm addicted), The Event (I like the 24 vibe), The Mentalist (love Jane!), Castle, Nikita (you just can't stop watching once an ep has started!), Hawaii-Five-O and No Ordinary Family (still waiting for the hook)
My top priority for television is Fringe, then Dexter! I absolutely love how both shows are progressing! Some people want Fringe to return to some generic procedural and ask why it can't. To them I say they answered their own question: generic sucks! Fringe is anything but another been-their-done-that show! As for Dexter, four great years of storyline, and now a mind-blowing fifth. Whoever doesn't watch them is missing out.
ReplyDeleteI also watch Glee, but it doesn't seem to have much of a storyline this season, so it's not capturing me. Modern Family and Cougar Town are also on my list of favourites, and they are hilarious every week.
Unfortunately I don't watch anything on ABC regularly, I'm probably even giving up NOF just cause I have too much on my plate already so that's like one big blind spot in my television knowledge. As for how DH and GA are doing ratings-wise, they are 2 of the 3 big scripted hits on ABC (the 3rd being Modern Family) so they won't be going anywhere barring unexpected issues or creative decisions ending the show--even if their ratings are way down from earlier seasons. As for the CW, it doesn't really have any issues like that. Last season OTH and LUX were in-fighting to see who would be renewed but this year it seems LUX will probably end around 13-15 episodes this season, while OTH gets a full back 9. After that, I'd venture to say both shows will end: OTH because it's getting ancient, LUX because of bad ratings. Gossip Girl will be renewed probably, as its the CW's favorite show and does well in the W18-34 ratings.
ReplyDeleteCongrats, great first article Wilson!
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are Supernatural, I love season 6 so far, and Fringe which is excellent but hasn't managed to get me as involved as Supernatural yet. I think Fringe finally found their niche with season 3 and the alternative universe storyline. What a pity that it's already on a hiatus.
Vampire diaries is starting to bore me. I will wait until a certain Supernatural actress shows up and then decide if I'm gonna drop it or not. They're doing the same thing like last year and Katherine could be way more evil.
Glee is still an hour of happiness without thinking, nothing more nothing less. It's fun.
I have started to watch a few new shows: Mike and Molly, The Event, Nikita, Blue Bloods and Hawaii 5-0. I love Blue Bloods and Mike & Molly but I'm already loosing interest in the Event, Nikita and Hawaii 5-0.
What about The CW? OTH? Gossip Girl? And I wanted to know how shows Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy are doing in eyes of ABC, because their ratings keeps falling. Is it still good or not.. Personally for me DH reclaimed her former glory with the return of Paul Young and the writings are that of Season 1. While Grey's Anatomy is still okay, I really hoped it would return to the quality of the first three(four?) seasons, because that sixth season finale was really awesome!
ReplyDeleteI never saw Heroes so that might be an advantage for me. After hearing everyone complain about season 2 and 3, I'm not planning on ever watching it. I'm not into disappointment.
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Wilson. I always look forward to hearing your opinions. I haven't been able to watch Fringe this season yet, but I will make it a priority after reading this. Kalinda has always been my favorite part of the Good Wife.
ReplyDeleteI do think No Ordinary Family is better than I thought it would be mostly because of the relationship of the 2 leads. I hope it will continue to grow and not stale out like so many genre shows do.
I am really looking forward to Burn Notice coming back in November and White Collar in Jan.
Covert Affairs was another one of my summer shows. I had a list of Summer shows that I cut out cause it would've just ended up being AMC's and USA's summer schedule with TNT mondays thrown in and I wanted to make this article more about Fall. XD
ReplyDeleteIKR!? I am almost solely watching it for Laura Innes. lol
ReplyDeleteI love your tv choices. :)
OMG I should've known you watch the Good Wife. I am in love with that show right now :)
ReplyDeleteAnd as for No Ordinary Family, I like it alright, but it feels like Heroes to me for some reason...and that leaves a bad taste in my mouth since I have grown to just LOATHE that show. lol
My Favorite shows are...Smallville, TVD, Supernatural, The Big Bang Theory, Bones, House, Glee, TB(even though it's not airing now) and Cougar Town...New shows I like....Hawaii Five-O, Mike and Molly, and Hellcats.
ReplyDeleteFavorites: Glee (loved the BS), Vampire Diaries (awesome show that is pretty dark at some parts especially the second season), Smallville (lol Smallvile is Smallville. I loved your piece on this show), Community (Troy and Abed FTW) Modern Family is pretty funny (sometime yes it may reuse old formulas, but can be good in some parts)
ReplyDeleteOutsourced is sort of good, sometimes it's hit and miss but I overall like it. I don't know if it had to do with being Indian (it's not all that offensive).
Fav Summer shows that ended awhile ago: White Collar and Covert Affairs :)
Outsourced might be the only new show I've watched this fall....
If you really wanna know check out the spoilers for TVD. ;D If you just want to watch the episode, it's 2.08 which airs on Nov 4th. ;D
ReplyDeleteThis post is not about the show and I don't want to spoil anybody who doesn't watch TVD.
Over the summer was hooked on Mad Men and Rubicon. Now I'm into Supernatural and also watching Fringe, The Good Wife, and Smallville. I'd watch Nikita except for the fact that it's on against Fringe. The Event was a big disappointment. I couldn't care less about the aliens, or whatever they are, and the acting of that young lead couple is so bad it's really distracting. They need to kill them off now. I'm still watching it though because it's become my routine, and I like seeing Carrie Weaver again.
ReplyDeleteI have a long list of shows that I love!!
ReplyDeleteNCIS (the best!!), NCISLA, Criminal Minds, Medium, Supernatural & Blue Bloods - All of which are great
I watch Glee too even though at times I find it extremely cheesy!
I also love Psych, Burn Notice and Rizzoli & Isles during the summer.
Woah! What Supernatural actress is going to be on TVD? I gave up on VD because I don't like the love triangle drama or Elena (at all). I may have to give this episode a chance.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your TGW and Mad Men's comments. They were/are the ones I'm most excited about this season.
ReplyDeleteAaaah, in the meaning that he's a bad ass character, that makes more sense. Thought u ruined the story by saying he's the "villain". I only watched till ep.4. I've heard that from ep.5 it realy gets awesome... I give it a try.
ReplyDeleteI think what he was trying to say is that Kale is a really cool character and not that he's the ultimate bad guy.
ReplyDelete:) Kale really is awesome.
ReplyDeleteNice article!! :) I was reading the Supernatural bit and I was thinking that it sounded like what you were saying about Weekend At Bobby's in another SpoilerTV article, when I realized that you wrote this article. Fail :P
ReplyDeleteI think Glee has improved a lot this season. The first 4 episodes of Glee have been amazing especially episode 3 where they went deeper into Kurt's character. Compared to the first 4 of the last season which was almost unbearable, this was really good. Rachel is also somewhat bearable this season compared to the last season where she was downright annoying with every word she ever said. Thank God Jane Lynch was there to make it better.
Yeah I found The Third Man Lacking but 2.5 men was great imo.
ReplyDeleteRegarding RUBICON:
ReplyDelete"I won't go into any details so as not to give away any of the (awesome) plot."
Couple of lines before: "The cast was well-composed (Kale Ingram is the ultimate badass on this show)"
Nice one^^
Series I usually catch every week(in order from best to decent):
ReplyDelete1. Vampire Diaries. (downright one of the best shows on tv right now, both in writing, acting and storyline. There's just NOTHING that is not needed in episodes - Every little detail will be used and is being used to further something - It does not stall and when it brings out the high-quality stuff, every episode feels like season finale. Frankly, if this was some other show, the material of the first season alone would have been used to create at least three seasons. 5/5)
2. Sanctuary. (while the show started off a little bit....off, once the background lore has been introduced it remained in quite high quality. Of course it had its bad episodes, but even in them, the characters remained entertaining. 4/5)
3. Fringe. (Well...season 2 was half boring. Season 3 is currently all over the place. Of course the in-episode plots are exciting but the show itself feels like its...stalling to bring out the WHAMS in mid-season episode? 4/5)
4. The Mentalist. ( While it is, mostly a episodic-cop-show, it wonderfully manages to avoid the bad things that plague cop shows. The twin_peaks-y main plotline though, is VERY entertaining. 4/5)
5.SGU. (while the episodes so far have been mostly every good(except the first episode of the season), I have my own doubts on show authors managing to retain this quality and falling backwards into the silliness that was their previous show, SGA. 3/5)
6. The Event. ( I keep hoping for some twist, for some amazing thing, for revelation that the prisoners are NOT aliens, etc.. so far the show just teases but does not deliver. 2/5)
The best Summer series:
- Haven. (hands down the best show this year. While it started out in quite a generic way, somewhere mid-way through the season, it began to get better and better, culminating into one of the best and most mindblowing season-finales in history of TV. 5/5)
Welcome, Wilson. I do not watch a lot of television, but I do follow Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, Hawaii Five-O, and Leverage. When you spoke of Weekend at Bobby's, I must agree. I also think that Jensen Ackles ws fabulous as a director and followed the late Kim Manners' precepts. I actually liked Two Men and a Baby. It ot only introduced the idea of Alphas, but showed more of the problem stemming with the Campbells. It was supposed to be an SPN comedy and I found it hilarious. I did not like the Third Man, but Live Free or Twihard was good for the Jensen Ackles' acting. He carried it off well. The storyline is getting interesting. I'm waiting for Dean to get mad enough to go after Sam and I think it's coming fast.
ReplyDeleteThanks for an interesting read. I agree with some of what you wrote and disagree with others, but that's what good writing encourages. Thank you, again.
Congrats Wilson ;)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on Fringe, it has a lot of elements and it's getting better and better.
The series I watch every week:
- Being Erica
- Fringe,
- Glee
- Grey's Anatomy,
- No Ordinary family (still waiting if it's getting better)
- Vampire Diaries.
Fav summer series:
- Burn Notice
- Covert Affairs
Sometimes (depends on clips/episode)
- Private Practice
- Bones
- NCIS
OMG. I totally forgot about Raising Hope. I randomly caught half of the hoarding episode and it is now on my DVR season pass list. :)
ReplyDeleteRaising Hope is my new guilty pleasure. I roll with laughter each episode. Love it although I can see the shtick getting old; the characters are funny.
ReplyDeleteI watch 3 shows:
ReplyDeleteTuesday: No Ordinary Family (wondering who will bite the bullet tomorrow)
Thursday: Vampire Diaries (TRIPLE PISSED that Stefan and Elena broke up, CAN"T WAIT to see why Katherine wants the moonstone, and not missing Mason now that he's out of the picture, even though Tyler looks like he's headed for werewolf-dom)
Friday: CSI NY (Miss Melina Kanakeredes but Sela Ward is doing ok so far as the new CSI)
-Being Erica; great show, season was was great, season 2 had ups and downs. But season 3 is fantastic; the acting, new storylines. The timetravelling isn't the big factor on the show and that's good. The sessions have still in the third season a supprissing twists/ One of the most underated and less talked about.
ReplyDelete- Fringe, you explained it, why it is such a great show.
- Glee, funny show. Like the comedy and singing element. Also the ep that Joss Whedon directed. I am not always blown away of the acting, but it is entertaining.
- Grey's Anatomy, great show, good storylines and depth in characters. Like the element of the show how the doctors treat patients who learn them something about themself. Shonda is on her best again.
- No Ordinary Family, still watching. See some plotholes and waiting for some change.. I think they can't choose which way they want to go at this point in the genre: Action, family, drama, supernatural. Heroes, Smallville and the Vampire Diaries have this much better under controll and well written. But giving still a few episodes a chance.
- Vampire Diaries, love the chemistry between Stefan and Elena. The characters keep suprissing me and still figuaring out Damon.
Burn Notice, one of the best summer shows. Hopefully a few more seasons on tv, so if the summer is getting boring I can enjoy good tv.
Covert Affairs, the best new show this year. I had my doubts first of Piper Perabo, but they are all gone and still want to know if her lover did make it or not.
Looking forward to your opinion on Covert Affairs Wilson.
OH no, Kale is anything but a villain. But in all honesty, the main villain is really...awesome as well. Sort've in that "hate'm but still, there's something about'em that makes you still like'm." And the acting on this show...it's phenomenal, especially if you like underplaying.
ReplyDeleteWhy would fans want Fringe go back to the motw episodes? The way the storyline is handled now is fascinating and unique, if they go back to the old format, they're just one of many shows. The change didn't result in any characters disappearing, so what's the argument for going back to the old format?
ReplyDeleteI've heard of Misfists and Skin, they sound pretty good. Do you watch anything else? I thought the new Sherlock Holmes was awesome.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about Haven. I agree with you...off to an interesting but generic start. The tail end of the season was intriguing. I'm lookign forward to its return.
ReplyDeleteWatching Smallville, Dexter, House, Fringe, Glee and no ordinary family. I tried The Event but it just didn't do it for me. Smallville is great this season, and House & Dexter are their great self. I had trouble getting into Fringe this season but it's getting better. Glee keeps being watchable due to Jane Lynch amazing comedy.
ReplyDeleteAnd No Ordinary Family isn't great, but it's funny at times and the acting isn't bad.
