Character Cup Quarter Final Three - Clark Kent (Smallville) vs. Olivia Dunham (Fringe)

14 Oct 2010

Day 25:
Well that was intense. The lead went one way, then the next, Elena gaining a huge early lead, only for Jack to catch up, and take a brief lead, before Elena nearly stole back the win, until Jack took the decisive lead a couple of hours before the polls closed. Vampire Diaries is out, 'LOST' will fight 'The X-Files' for a place in the final, Fox Mulder & Jack Shephard doing battle.
Today sees the first tie of the bottom half of the semi-finals, and we see 'Smallville's' Clark Kent taking on the queen of 'Fringe' Science, Olivia Dunham. Who can take a place in the Semi-Finals, can the man of steel cement a place, or can Olivia find a way through like she did against Damon Salvatore. The Quarter Finals continue, the Character competition draws ever closer to the end.

Also keep upto date with the competition and/or ask questions by following me on twitter. I'll also post some of my reviews, writing updates & other bits & bobs, more often than not TV and Film based. I'm at: http://twitter.com/AdDHarris

Don't forget to keep following your bracket if you entered the competition at http://www.dawgsled.com/darkufo/welcome.asp

  1. Voted for Olivia, great character! :)

  2. It's just you.

The rest of us welcome variety in our TV shows.

  3. It's better this way.
First because we will know for sure who the favourite for the tournament is.
Secondly, let the other fandom believe they stand a chance against Summer Glau a little while longer.

But when the time for slaughter will come, River Tam will have no mercy.

  4. First of all, I'm so glad that Jack won! He was so far behind when I last checked, I was sure he'd lose... I like TVD too, but Elena is sort of pathetic and useless, and definitely not half the character Jack is.

For this round, Olivia for sure! Mostly because I've never seen Smallville...

  5. Of all the videos for Fringe/Olivia that I've come across, I consider this to be one of the best, if not the very best:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcH6Pirh_2Q

I think Olivia is an incredible character. The way she has been portrayed over the last two+ seasons, you can't help but sympathize for her and want the best for her. And she just keeps getting better and better. I think she has the perfect balance between being human and vulnerable, while also being very strong, capable, and admirable. I find myself very invested in her character: when she gets hurt, I grieve with her; when she's happy, I feel happy. I suppose it's probably a bit lame to be so invested in a fictional character, but they've developed her character so well that I can't help it. I am thrilled that she has made it this far into the competition and I could easily see her moving forward to the next round -- she's certainly earned it!

  6. But if you're gonna lose out to anyone, who better to lose out to (overall) than Fox Mulder?! Guy's classic.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I cannot be happier that Vampire Diaries was defeated! Thank you, Jack!

As for here, it's got to be Olivia. Though I've been watching Smallville from the get-go, I've never been a huge fan of Clark's, personally (though Tom does a great job, of course). But Olivia is a unique character, one unlike a lot of characters on TV today, and that's something I really appreciate. It's refreshing to see, I gotta admit, when you've got so many shows with characters that are similar.

    So, Olivia it is!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Agreed. Buffy, Dark Angel, Haven, X-Files, V, Sanctuary, Fringe, Lost Girl (waves hi to Canada), and True Blood all have female leads and have had varying degrees of success.

Female led genre shows aren't rare and have proven on many occasions that they can work.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Before we even get there I have to say. The last 2 firefly characters up against each other in the quarter finals? Couldnt we have thrown them against some other people so they could meet up at a later round after thrashing a few more people?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Lol! It took me a minute to figure out what you were doing there. That's funny stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  11. a sci-fi show with a female lead looks weird????

So if the lead was a men it's ok but not a girl... what are u talking about?? Girls can kick some monsters as well

You remember one character calling Dana Scully??? She was the lead characater of a sci-fi show (because not only Mulder was the lead character, even her still more time in the show than Mulder), so girls leads in a sci-fi show it's not weird

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm sure I have no idea what you're talking about.

    Omnomnomnom.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think you meant Kneel before... haha :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Just make sure to save some food for yourself.

    Ha! I jest :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. I actually liked season one and two Lana. The character was just written poorly after that. The truth is the writers had no real place for Lana so they had to keep making up these incredible stories jsut to keep her interesting. I do miss season one and two Lana a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Olivia Dunham, you will bow down before Clark Kent!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Who are these "common guys" who vote for Clark?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Baha.

I like to feed the trolls.

    ReplyDelete
  19. ooohhhh you are gonna piss some people off with that last part. just a warning. lol

    ReplyDelete
  20. Vote for Olivia! I did. :) #Fringe

    ReplyDelete
  21. I know I was like a sophmore in Highschool when I first started watching it. I am now 27! Smallville is like an old friend to me. It has been a part of my life for almost an entire decade.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Obviously.

But he's like, 17 votes ahead.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Olivia, of course.

Not only is she the better character, but Fringe is the better show, and Walternate could kick Lex Luthor's ass.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Olivia, I love Fringe and Olivia make a good job in this show, and I never like SV so mi vote for her

    ReplyDelete
  25. Olivia Dunham NO QUESTION! :D

I've also got a feeling that Muldah is gonna win. Not that I have a problem with that at all. :)

  27. SO.....finding a GOOD, generally CURRENT video was almost impossible... I found one that was a good HQ video but sorta meandered quite a bit, and then I found one with perfect music, etc. but super-harsh editing (such a shame, it's an amazing video)
I will post both so YOU can decide :P

  28. OMGGGGGG IKR?
I've had it BAD for Chloe for like... ever. lol
I remember in like season 1 or 2 when Clark was trying to go out with Chloe and it didn't work out, I was so upset lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. Smallville fans are obviously cheating the poll with ip refreshers. I refreshed after 1 minute and it had like 10 votes added to it right after. No matter what the script they wrote to add votes keeps Clark Kent 10 votes ahead. lol

    ReplyDelete
  30. Clark of course, I watched 10 episodes of Fringe and Olivia seemed really serious and boring, and I think it's just me but a sci-fi show with a female lead looks weird :S

Clark can be serious, angry, funny, cute for the ladies, sad, he has all the emotions and the last two seasons have been awesome (well imo all the show is of course good)

    ReplyDelete
  31. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrCXsYmZ_SE here's one that i'm partial too xD

    ReplyDelete
  32. Olivia. I still can't get over Clark's appalling taste. Anyone that into Lana Lang had to have issues beyond the alien superhero drama. :-) Sorry but Smallville was all about Chloe for me (well after Lex Luthor got mind zapped by the Lanabot too.)

    ReplyDelete
  33. ... but tell us how you really feel. :P

    ReplyDelete
  34. No offense to the maker of the Olivia tribute: can we please find another vid? I'll go get it if so...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Clark 49.8%
    Olivia 50.2%
    Holy WOW that is close!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh geez...I've been watching Smallville since I was 10... :( *Cough, age 19, cough* and while I've always loved the show and have always thought Tom Welling was brilliantly cast, I feel like the way he was written in this show is very similar in effect to having a recording repeat itself 197 times... While he's grown as a character lately, Clark has always been a little annoying to me...If I had a penny for every time I heard "I would never let that happen" or something to that effect, I'd be more than well-off. Meanwhile, I found Olivia in the first season (while others called the actress stiff) an insanely narrow character thrown into a world that undermined her black-and-white good-or-bad philosophy. I saw this cold, scorned gorgeous woman slowly come to terms with characters that completely upheld ideas that she condemned, (her obvious foil character, the amazingly unstable Walter Bishop) and her further retraction from love when the man she thought she knew so well turned on her and then died right in front of her. I watched as she dug through the disturbing and unspeakable acts of the ZFT and the invaders from the alternate universe. I began to put together her calculative, quiet nature, and her inability to forget, her passion of righting some universal, all-encompassing "wrong" that she perceives all around her. As Peter once said, this "haunted" individual hunts for the truth, and even when it horrifies her, she still pushes through it. Also? She's resourceful, gifted in ways no one on earth can imagine (able to slip between realities, recall anything, start fires, literally endless potential--very much like her opponent in that sense) and a loyal, fierce friend. She's grown from the isolated FBI agent to the prospective lover of Peter Bishop, and is currently fighting a heartbreaking battle within her own mind, being fed deceit by everyone around her.

And that's just the half of it!
Alternatively, *cough cough* she's an Olympic Gold medal-winning marksman, a sexual Goddess, an uninhibited, ruthless, manipulative strategic agent willing to cross into another reality to debilitate an entire universe for the safety of her life.

My decision's been made, I suppose.

Common guys vote for Clark!!! Give him one big goodbye from the fans for giving us such a good show! This is our tribute as best character to the Show Smallville!
GO CLARK GO SMALLVILLE!!!!! VOTE FOR CLARK!

    ReplyDelete
  42. This is a close one for me but I'm giving the edge to Olivia because she's an original character, built from scratch. As much as I like Welling as Clark Kent, there were generations of previously established history built into the part he was playing.

Olivia Dunham is the bigger achievement.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Fox Mulder vs Jack Shephard? 2 of my favorite characters. That's gonna be epic!

Oh, voted for Kent, 'cause I've never watched Fringe. Although I've wanted to for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I voted for Olivia. I'm a big Fringe fan now LOST is done :P

    She rocks! :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. lol I love it when people apply 10 episodes (presumably of the first season) to a show with well over 40 episodes. It's called the fallacy of composition(applying the partial to the whole object/situation): your argument doesn't hold up--in the 35 episodes you avoided, Olivia was repeatedly put into varying situations that have brought some awesome things about her into the light. And hell, we got a Fauxlivia now who is even the opposite of our Olivia--there's something for everyone...

    ReplyDelete
  46. While I might not agree with all you say and I think Olivia can be just as annoying as Clark especially because of her attitude and special powers, this is by far the best explanation of why someone should vote for a character here. KUDOS! Well-said.

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's a bird... It's a plane... It's Superman!
I voted for Clark though I can't believe he beat Eric Northman. I guess that many members of The Fellowship of the Sun had voted then...

    ReplyDelete
  48. I have a suggestion here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrxQZDXKXJs

That's a lot more epic and better quality videos too. Plus it's not boring (no offense). =P

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ok voted For Clark but maybe as a tribute vid you should but something a bit more current with a song that is about CLARK just a suggestion

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah. I was worried when I heard the season would kick-off based around Olivia but it turned out pretty awesome. She's not my favourite Fringe character but she's definitely up there now.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Twitter is ridiculous with its character limit though. I get through half a sentence and I'm already cut off!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm having deja vous. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  57. I hate seeing Olivia losing :'(

    ReplyDelete
  58. This round is going to be disappointing considering the number of votes, that is true. But everything else you says is wrong and is contradict by facts.

First people said that the voting numbers will decline after the loss of SPN characters :
This is not the case so far. The average number of votes per poll after the Fox Mulder vs. Dean Winchester battle is 8 636 (77 721 votes for 9 polls) . If someone has the time to calculate the average number before, it would certainly be very lower.

Then people said (hoped?) the characters who brought SPN ones down will not have the same level of numbers in their next matches :
This was wrong for Malcolm Reynolds vs Erica Evans (7 374 votes for Mal) and for Malcolm Reynolds vs Dexter (6 584 votes for Mal).
This was wrong again for Elena Gilbert vs Seeley Booth (8 952 votes for Elena) and for Jack Shephard vs. Elena Gilbert (5 953 votes for Elena but a total of 12 133 votes).
And this was wrong again for Fox Mulder vs. Benjamin Linus (9 104 votes for Mulder)

It takes two strong characters to break a record :
The Seeley Booth vs. Elena Gilbert poll had a total numbers of votes of 9 820 which is respectable but not near the record because Booth had only 868 votes.

It may sounds weird that Booth went in Sweet Sixteen with a small 868 votes when Castiel lost with 3 335 votes in first round but it's just the randomness of the bracket game.

  59. Good analysis Jonathan, nice one.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Anna Torv did get a Saturn Award this year.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yeah, that's also true. In fact we have seen her much more than usual in those first 4 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yay! Someone said "C'mon" instead of "common." :D

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think it just has more to do with character development. Before, Peter and Walter were getting the best scenes. Now, Olivia's having her turn.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm on a horse.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Whew. Clark is winning, I was afraid that when I came back here he would be losing.. =(

But he's winning! Hopefully it stays that way.

    ReplyDelete
  66. This season she's likeable just because basically both Olivias are Alt-Olivias.

    ReplyDelete
  67. It actually happens twice for LOST (and even in the same round). lol

    ReplyDelete
  68. It actually happens twice for LOST (and even in the same round). lol

    ReplyDelete
  69. My voting against Clark doesn't seem to have made any difference so far, but I'm not giving up :P on the other hand, I'm a bit angry with Olivia, cause she defeated my favourite female character, Lorelai.

duh, with Supernatural out, this competition isn't that exciting any more. And the numbers of votes have dropped drastically too. I guess there's something to the anti-SPN voting going on here after all :P

    ReplyDelete
  70. I voted Olivia... i've never watched smallville, but fringe is one of my fav. shows...
C'MON FRINGE FANS! let's kick SV's ass today :D just kidding... didn't mean to be rude lol

    ReplyDelete
  71. There's those common guys again.

    ReplyDelete
  72. She used to be my least favourite too, until this season. It's only been a few episodes in but her character's (or characters, plural) really shined.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm sure they're on the edge of their seats.

    ReplyDelete
  74. SmallvilleSupernaturalCastle15 October 2010 at 00:10

Yay Smallville Fans!!!! Keep on voting!!! DarkUFo or Smallville people if ur reading this, this is our gift from the fans because u gave us smallville and gave us great entertainment for a decade!! We will try and get Clark to win and that is our gift!

    ReplyDelete
  75. The draw for all shows was done randomly via our brackets system.

    ReplyDelete
  76. SmallvilleSupernaturalCastle15 October 2010 at 00:15

Hey they through Clark kent and lois lane of the same show against each other so its only fair they do it to another show which happens to be firefly

    ReplyDelete
  77. SmallvilleSupernaturalCastle15 October 2010 at 00:15

agreed. Does anyone from the shows or networks read these?

    ReplyDelete
  78. I like both shows, but Olivia is my least favorite character in Fringe, she just annoys me terribly.
So I voted for Clark Kent, although Chloe is the best character from the show.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Let's not start naming calling now.

This is a friendly community here and no one should be called a Loser.

    Agreed?

Common guys lets get Clark to become the winner!!! This can be a gift to the Creators of Smallville for giving us such good entertainment since the 2001!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Uau... I'm speechless. And she's my favourite character in Fringe!! But uau... :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Olivia Dunham!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No doubt about that!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  84. This is pretty close, but I would have expected much more votes from both of them.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Duh. Olivia, of course.

Either black or white bra of Olivia (or Alter Olivia) will bring down Clark Kent

    ReplyDelete
  86. Oh yeah. lol I knew I messed up somewhere! Thanks! : )

    ReplyDelete
  87. lol, yep. The beautifully educated populace of America. /sigh Although, I can't really point fingers; my spelling degrades when I use twitter. It's weird.

    ReplyDelete
  88. And even if she can top that (which is unlikely), she'll never top this:

    LOL

    ReplyDelete
  96. Oh no you're right! I better get on twitter and ask more people to vote! Hopefully we can get Clark Kent, aka SUPERMAN, to 4000 votes by tonight! A lead by 2000 would be more safer for him!

    ReplyDelete
  97. I can sure hope that's the case.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Oh Brokeback Mountain. Have ye taught me nothing?!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Wow, the two site runners taking some time to answer me :)

Edit : that doesn't mean i underestimate you Hungry Emo

    ReplyDelete
  102. Suddenly resisting the urge to crack a bareback joke.

    ReplyDelete
  103. One interesting thought is that with Fringe airing at 9 tonight, will fans visit the site beforehand and pull out a surprise victory for Olivia. The polls close just before 9.

  105. Sorry I didn't use them, If Olivia wins, I will use them next round. Watched them and agree with the editing :P It's tough to find good ones for some characters.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Hope you got a saddle

    ReplyDelete
  107. Would be cool if they did, but somehow, I doubt it. You never know though :P

    ReplyDelete
  108. That's probably because you have no soul, my friend.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I'm sure the creators of Smallville are biting their nails

    ReplyDelete
  110. The turnout for this round is disappointing on both sides.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I have to repeat myself because i can stand misinformation.
Also i have updated my numbers with the latest polls.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Loving the work you put into going through all the polls, haha. Also interesting to know mate! I may sneak in some of the statistics for the next poll, so keep an eye out!

    ReplyDelete
  113. I don't care.

    *tear*

    ReplyDelete
  114. You spelled it right is all.

    ReplyDelete
  115. lol well its a clear win for welling more than 1000 clear of olivia :) im chuffed smallville has been like a addiction since it started and has been good watching welling grow with the show just a shame its the final season :( .

wish welling would accept the part for the new superman coming soon

    ReplyDelete
  116. Accept it? It'd never be offered to him.

    ReplyDelete
  117. She's a Nightcrawler sound effect?

    ReplyDelete
  118. I don't think there is one. Certainly not one that I've seen

    ReplyDelete
  119. so Dark, do you know what would be the equivalent to KryptonSite for Supernatural?

I only visit SupernaturalWiki and the forums of Supernatural on KryptonSite lol

  120. If Smallville was cancelled in season 5 or 6, Welling would have certainly played Superman in Superman Returns. I think he wished to commit more to Smallville. Now that Smallville is ending and Man of Steel is coming in 2012, I think he's the most considered by fans for the role after Brandon Routh failed at displaying any emotion with the character in the 2006 movie.

  121. Wow, what a shame. Every other Show Fan site has been happy to share the
    polls.

I guess he's one of the those "traffic whores" who does not want people
    leaving his site.

It's a shame when people become obsessed like that,it does nothing to help
    the community.

Nearly every site I deal with are great about sharing info/photos etc we're
all in this together and we run these sites for the fans not for our own
    egos.

I thought they found someone already? No? Even if Tom wont be superman everyone can bet 100% that Tom will make some kind of appearance whether its cameo or a character. MAYBE MICHAEL ROSENBAUM AND ERICA DURANCE TOO!

  125. I'm glad Clark Kent won. I love Smallville :)

  126. What? There was never going to be a movie with Tom Welling. Even IF Smallville had ended. He was never being considered for the role.

Producers have been very clear all along that they want to keep the movie franchise seperate from the TV show.

I once read a really big essay about the history of Superman on films but I couldn't seem to find it. That had extensive reasons why Tom Welling was approached and why the role was finally given to an unknown actor.
The link above is linked as source on Wikipedia.

  128. The studio has always said there would not be a Superman movie with Welling as the lead. The less said about Ratner and his ideas, the better.

  129. Well, that's what I read, it was an essay that included even Nicolas Cage and JJ Abrams involved. I know I read somewhere Warner didn't want to mix Smallville with the movie franchise, but maybe Smallville ending would have encouraged them to do so, I don't know. But fact is, Tom Welling has indeed been considered to play Superman, although what you say is true, Warner did say that. Contradicting ha.

  130. I knew he would win. What can I say? I'm good like that : )

  131. I heard all of that as well. But haven't they already mixed Smallville with the movies already? I'm sure there are many scenes in past seasons but with tonight's episode, Homecoming, Clark saving Lois in the helicopter in the future? Same as in the first Superman movie.
Lois hanging from the helicopter that's about to fall off of the side of the building. And then she falls.
Superman flies up and catches he.
    "I got you, miss.
"You got me? Who... who's got you!
    Something along those lines!

  132. The question is : will Clark be powerfull enough to beat River in semifinale?
