Day 24:
The Quarter finals have delivered their first demolition, LOST fan's not finding their feet, and Benjamin Linus sinking to a disappoint 1,400 votes to Fox Mulder's 9000+. This good showing after last rounds win over Dean Winchester shows just how good a chance Fox has at claiming the crown. LOST meanwhile, has been well and truly beaten, and Jack fans (myself included) need to hope for a bigger turnout today or else Elena Gilbert of The Vampire Diaries will cruise through.
Whatever the case, we have one character through, he's gonna be tough to beat, the quarter finals roll on :)

It's always been the "most rabid fan base" contest. That's what an internet poll is. :-) The fun is getting other people to watch your show and being able to talk about it with other fans. My bet is that all the talk about Jack (both pro and con) brought up a lot of memories.
ReplyDeleteThere's a reason why one of the biggest Supernatural cons is called Asylum. It's one of my favorite stand alones. Watch out for Scarecrows though. They're fugly. Oh, and skip through any small town famous for its apple pie. :-)

ReplyDeleteLook I'm not trying to get into some big argument with you over this competition (there are much more important things in life). I didn't mean to be condescending or patronizing. I am sorry if it came off that way.
ReplyDeleteHowever, at the same time your comment does sort of show what I'm talking about. The fact that you dislike him is what made him such a great character. The fact that his dad always told him he didn't have what it takes and because of this he didn't want to be leader of the Losties but was thrown into the position. Eventually the pressure got to him and he had those seasons with his pill addiction when he was just so hated by everyonr. Then in just one season everyone one was crying when (Spoiler Alert for the Series Finale) ...he died. It takes one hell of a character to be so loved, then hated, then loved again.
If you can tell me that Elena Gilbert has had that much character development in a season of Vampire Diaries that's fine. Then vote for her then. But in my mind we're suppose to be voting for who the better character is, not who your favourite is (I haven't voted for most LOST characters in this because I would acknowledge that the opponent was a better character).
Anyways, I've been condescending again, and I'm sure you'll reply. Like I said I'm not trying to get into an argument with you, I was just trying to stop people from trying to vote who they think would make the better opponent for someone else who they want to see win.
Definitely, Asylum and Scarecrow is amazing!!!! The one after Scarecrow was Faith and I think it was okay. But Route 666 that comes after Faith isn't that great :( Especially Cassie or whatever was so annoying.

ReplyDeleteWhile I would agree that Lost is LIGHTYEARS ahead of TVD, I would like to point out something people might not realize: TVD does NOT = Twilight. I fuckin' hate Twilight but I seem to watch TVD almost every week. Why? It's actually well-written, pseudo-serialized, really violent at times, and while I hate the whole slutty complex that CW shows have, I appreciate the fact that the people on this show don't sexually abuse themselves by withholding to the point of self-implosion.

Well I hope Elena fans got to see in her 26 episodes how she became someone knew (unless this character development is magical in Vampire shows), because we got to see how Jack went from:

And it was worth every episode getting there.

ReplyDeleteFor me, the fact he has four more seasons than Elena is a BAD thing, because it gave me a chance to dislike his character even more. Now, if Elena is a "weaker" character by your standards, then so be it... I guess I must just be a lower-class viewer.
Saying that, I completely dislike Elena's character... I just haven't had to sit through her whinging as much as I have Jack's. And while I rate LOST a better show than The Vampire Diaries, this isn't about the show. Therefor, I'll vote for whoever the hell I want and not be condescended to.

ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you. We got a chance to see his character develop over 6 years (120+ episodes).
We saw Jack hit rock bottom (namely in Through the Looking Glass), and eventually achieve redemption.
With all respect to fans of the Vampire Diaries, but no there is no argument substantial enough to convince me that 'Elena', a character seen in only 26 episodes, and featured in the 'Vampire Diaries' is a better (or more complex) character than Jack Shephard.
In 10 years, the Vampire Diaries will be remembered as simply part of the teenage vampire-phase (and ultimately overshadowed by Twilight), and Elena will likely not be remembered.
Jack on the other hand - one of the best developed characters to ever grace your television screen.

ReplyDeleteI've only watched a couple of episodes of LOST (the entire first season before I became too busy and just lost track of it before too long), and that was *years* ago, but Jack wins hands down over Elena for me. His character as I recall it is multifaceted and real, whereas Elena still has a long way to go in terms of becoming a truly three-dimensional character. So far the only two expressions she has are "hurt/shocked" and "confused brow furrow"... The Vampire Diaries and its characters just don't have the tenure or the complicated characters that LOST has.

Elena has faults -- she can be selfish and bitchy at times -- but we all do, and she undergoes so much growth through the course of the books. I admire her selflessness, and I admit I would love to have a Stefan of my very own.
