Caprica - Cancelled

27 Oct 2010

Syfy have just cancelled Caprica.

Here is the latest from EW.

Caprica is toast. Syfy has announced that the Battlestar Galactica prequel has been canceled.

“The remaining first run episodes of Caprica – airing Tuesdays at 10/9c – will be removed from the schedule as of next Tuesday, November 2,” said the network in a statement. “These final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.”

“We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for ‘Caprica’ and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series,“ said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President of Original Programming, Syfy and Co-Head of Content for Universal Cable Productions. “Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, ‘Caprica’ has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”

  1. Inevitable. SGU may be next.

  2. You're surprised?

  3. Thats not the point is it lol? No matter how much I expected it, if a show I love gets cancelled it still makes me sad, therefore, I'm hoping that Blood and Chrome will be awesome, because if it is, I may cry.

  4. I hope you like it and that the other Battlestar fans like it too. I could just never get fully on board with Caprica. BSG was an emotionally draining show and Caprica (to me) was depressing enough for me to consider becoming a cutter. It was just way to much gloom after BSG for me to take.

I can sympathize with your emotional reaction to a favorite show being axed so early, though. I still miss Terminator: TSCC.

  5. Ouch! Don't even try to say it again! ^^ Not SGU!
For Caprica, I guess it was inevitable indeed, and that explains why they want to do a second one!

  6. I'm with you. I like SGU but the ratings are barely any better than Caprica.

  7. Damn.

SyFy just likes to air brainless, harmless and non-serialized shows that won't make the viewer think, I guess. They can't change the fact that Caprica has low ratings, I know that but still, I'm very disappointed.

I hope the writers saw the cancellation coming (Caprica never had good ratings) and didn't end the season on a cliffhanger (because I'm sure the finale is written and probably in production if not already completed by now).

Jeeze just when I felt a strong turn around. ):

  9. I loved BSG, but never could get into Caprica. The pilot/movie did not draw me in and the series bored me. IT had nothing to do with t being too cerebral or too detailed or subtle, I LOVE Rubicon and that show is slower and MORE cerebral, but what drew me in to BSG was the depth of chracters I liked, the intesity of the stories even in silent or slow scenes andjust the overall vibe and execution of the show. Caprica was well made nough but never had the other 2 qualities in large enough qunatities to make me a regular watcher. I do intend on watching Blood & Chrome and hope it is better.

  10. I didn't really enjoy Caprica. Considering that I know how everything ends, it made everything feel kind of tacked on and boring.

And I agree with Bruce_F. BSG was emotionally draining and I had little desire to deal with a tv show where depressing crap happens every ten minutes or so. I watch shows to be entertained and inspired, and being depressed after nearly every episode of a tv series is not entertaining.

It's nice to make characters overcome adversity, but that only works if there is some kind of meaningful payoff after the ordeal is over. BSG and Caprica always went out of their way to either completely ignore the payoff, or an episode or two after the payoff was given to have it violently destroyed in some other depressing way.

It's just my personal opinion, but that's a terrible way to write a tv series.

  11. Caprica didn't really get going until a few episodes in... so not surprised many turned off before then.

  12. Critics and fans around the world would disagree with you there.

  13. Bah. I was actually really getting into Caprica. The actors are some of the best ensemble I've seen lately and the writing was getting stronger and stronger. Such a shame.

  14. That's not entirely accurate. BSG was advertised straight from the beginning as a dramatic space opera. People who watched the show went into it knowing that, but more then a few times they went a little too far with the drama.

In that regard, just because BSG had a lot of fans doesn't mean their method of storytelling was the right way, or even better. It just means that it filled a niche that no other show was filling at the time. I mean come on, it didn't really have any competition through its entire run.

  15. Ouch! I hope SGU won't be next. *delusional*

  16. It's more accurate than insinuating BSG and Caprica are "terribly written shows."

"In that regard, just because BSG had a lot of fans doesn't mean their method of storytelling was the right way, or even better."

Exactly. It also doesn't mean it was any worse. ;)

  17. Fuuuu. I now hate everything lol. I mean, i knew it was going to be cancelled, but now its being pulled from the schedule until 2011!? Urgh. I am enraged.

  18. Typical Scifi/Syfy (whatever you useless people call yourselves).
Can't cancel a show quick enough can you.
If only your board of management would get cancelled and replaced by better people.

  19. People like Mark Stern are the reason why BSG's last two seasons were crammed into one, resulting in parts of the story being unexplained. Well done Mark Useless Stern

    ReplyDelete
  20. Blood and Chrome will get cancelled because Mark Stern will cancel it and also because it is made by SyFy which cancels fucking everything.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Doesn't matter - it's been pulled from the air to televise next season.
My guess is they won't televise it and release it on a box set expecting people to buy it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I understand your disappointment, but saying that SyFy cancels everything is a gross misrepresentation of the facts.

  23. I think the major problem with Caprica was the attempt to go for a youth angle from the get go. Who the heck wants to watch a bunch of whining, over privileged teenagers who have fallen in with religious zealots week after week? My favorite characters are the badass Adamas. The creepy big eyed Zoe is not the least bit sympathetic as a lead. Her parents storylines are interesting but continuing to go back to the teenagers has kept me from really enjoying the show. Not surprised by it being cancelled. I do hear that a young Adama series may be in the works- it would follow Adama through the Academy and into the cylon wars.

  24. Caprica is an absolutely great series - outstanding cast, story, exploration of social structures - I never will understand why general TV viewers continue to be satisfied watching 95% of what is total mindless crap that is "Successful TV."

Considering how religion, politics, power elites just about run this entire world - why the heck don't people want to explore and think about how their society works.

I sad to see that such an outstanding series is lost to the "numbers game" - not surprised, but they could at least have let the rest of the season show. At least they could do is put the show online for all the fans to watch or put it out for itunes. I was more than happy to pay for it with itunes.

  26. I have no problem with religion and politics- it is the whining privileged youth rebelling against mommy and daddy by blowing people up that repels me. I really wanted Lacy to get the gank this week. Frakking idiot.

Hoping Barnabas survived and can get in some vengeance before the series ends. The VR world is well done- Tamara rocks as queen of New Cap City. Zoe? Again- just don't care for her.

I like the show but understand completely how people have been turned off. Why they didn't wait to premiere it in the winter is beyond me.

"By your command" did warm my heart this week though. Again- Sam Adama is the biggest toughest badass on right now- I somehow think some of those 'bots will make their way to the rebels on Tauron. Just hoping we end the series with successful completion of the resurrection software and that somehow we get a preview of the great litigator and legal paragon that Joseph becomes cuz the mob lawyer is not one now.

^It's suppose to be an unique look at terrorism, how people of all ages end up joining a cause that uses violence to express it's messages. Caprica in recent weeks finally got to this place where I hoped it would go, allowing fans to see that even the fall was destined as something repeated over and over just as Battlestar was and that bigger forces at work were pushing and leading at least one person towards these events.

In Battlestar we ended on a somewhat somber note, but with promise of a future from a special little dark haired girl named Hera and in Caprica we start with somber note about the promise and potential of a special young teen-aged dark haired girl with a hope of a future even after her death. Zoe is really the beginning and end of Hera. Their roles in the universe are tied and mirrored. Caprica also gave us more political depth and religious and science exploration in which in some ways we were limited to with BSG.

It figures when this series finally gives me the things I thought it might end up be missing, is the day it's cancelled. --I am still hopeful though that we get and alright conclusion and that maybe some of these characters will show up in Blood and Chrome...

  28. Not really suprised but I feel bad for the fans who did watch it. I wasn't a fan, too angsty for me, but I look forward to the other BSG spin-off with Young Captain Adama. :D

  29. Maybe they won't. They can't cancel everything, they need a few shows to air. And SGU isn't doing that great at moment so maybe they will try to pair the shows. Thematically it would work and could increase the audience. SGU always likes to describe themselves as Stargate meets BSG, so I think a BSG SGU night seems like a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Caprica failed to get an audience and if nobody watches the channel can't keep airing it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well last year at the end of the season they said that it wasn't that bad, I know that the ratings for the new season are quite ... well, not good, but the season is not over yet!! If SGU is cancelled, it will probably be the end of Stargate, I can't accept that! ^^

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think they're moving away from high-quality programming, to me, Warehouse 13 and Eureka, whilst good shows, cannot really complete with programs such as Battlestar, even Caprica never really had that feel.

The more I think about Blood and Chrome and their decision to try and make it a series just a week before announcing Caprica's cancellation, the more I think what ever story was left for Caprica's second season might role over onto Blood and Chrome since it only takes place roughly 10 years later. This might be a way to give both Caprica and BSG fans a happy medium and still attempt not to step on fans of neither's toes.

I am mad I have to wait though to see how they have chosen to end Caprica!

  34. I loved this show and will miss it. SGU will be next and is also a great show I will miss as well. I think i'm about ready to give up tv since every show I enjoy gets cancelled. TV has no loyalty to fans at all. They could at the very least go ahead and show the remaining episodes or post them online instead of waiting months for loyal fans to see

  35. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-

Caprica was a great show, but great shows do not last, I guess.

Now SYFY, known better as Syphilis, will cancel Haven and SGU(aka their only good shows left) and start showing reruns of sga, eureka, wh13, wrestling and other generic stuff....

Sad sad sad thing as Caprica was one of those awesomely written shows that were just too good for generic viewer :/

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't watch Warehouse 13 or Eureka but I think the problem was that Caprica was simply a boring show. Prequels are always difficult since you're basically watching a show where you know how it will end. I have high hopes for Blood and Chrome. If it works maybe Syfy will do more shows like it.
