Firstly, I am apologising for the lack of a start time over the last few days, but I'm majorly busy atm, but I'm getting the new rounds up as fast as I can :) And therefore, also I'm sorry I haven't changed the 'River Tam' image, but I promise that I will by the quarter finals (if she reaches it :P)
After a topsy-turvy day in the office, Olivia Dunham ensured Fringe had it's sole remaining character in the competition for the Quarter Finals, ending a very strong, but not quite good enough run by Liz Lemon. I think it's fair to say Olivia has surprised the odds reaching the final eight, perhaps credit to her strong start to season three over the last few weeks, but I can't deny that I'm pleased she has made it two women in the final eight as of now.
The question today, is can River Tam hake it three, as the 'Firefly' favourite takes on competition underdog and hugely impressive so far, Spike, from Vampire smash hit 'Buffy.' Exceeding the shows star, John Locke in Round one, he has earned his place, but can he keep it against the strong online crowd that firefly has found so far. For some, River is the competition favourite. Time she had a chance to prove it. And we begin...

I'm with Spike. A character that spans two successful television series (and comic books) and a decade of memorable work from one of television's most revered genre shows and its spinoff gets my vote. Nice job, Marsters.

ReplyDeleteIf you haven't seen my previous posts, I have been a Spike fan (and specifically a James Marsters) fan for the last twelve or thirteen years. Spike's transition wasn't really a transition, per se. He was never really different in total character from Season 2 of Buffy to Season 7, except for the falling in love with Buffy/getting a soul bit. He was still snarky and confrontational all the way through. It was his growth that I loved -- the things you found out about Spike -- from the fact that he originally got his first moniker, William The Bloody, because he wasn't a terribly successful -- or well-written -- poet, to the revelation in season 7 that he's been haunted by guilt his entire unlife because he turned the one person who loved him more than anything, to the entire ideal that, soulless, he has something that other vampires didn't have -- he retained his conscious, his loyalty, his honor, his ability to love.
If you haven't watched the Buffy series -- or haven't watched any Spike-centric episodes, you really should go back and rewatch it. James Marsters' performance gives Spike a depth that shatters most people's conceptions of "vampire" and "evil" -- with the exception of what the Twilight series has done to the genre. Yes, kiddies, there were handsome vampires BEFORE Twilight, and they WEREN'T all soulful and sparkly. Well, Angel was. But Spike wasn't. Spike was real. He was the REAL thing, and it makes me sad that they don't make vampires like him on television anymore.
I love River Tam (and by the way, it's frigging cruel to pit Whedon-verse characters against each other. Ahem.), but awesome secret weapon for doom or not, she doesn't hold a candle to Spike. Sorry, River.

ReplyDeleteYou should watch Firefly. It's only 13 episodes and on instant download at Netflix. Then you can say without a doubt that Spike DEFINITELY beats River Tam as a character. For one, he actually had time to be a developed character instead of being a "what might have been" character.

ReplyDeleteI watched Firefly but I would never say that River Tam was the main character. Is she the most popular with the fans? Looks like it, but Mal is the main character. It was his decision to keep River on board. He could have said ship off at any time. For most of the episodes, River didn't have many scenes. She only became a powerful she-bot towards the end.

ReplyDeleteThis poll is just cruel. I love Firefly and I love Buffy, but when it comes down to it, River is too amazing not to vote for.
ReplyDeleteRiver is the catalyst for Firefly. The way I see the show is that it's the story of River told through Mal. Without River, the show wouldn't progress anywhere. It would simply be about a group of rebels living on the fringe and taking whatever jobs come their way. There would be no prevailing element to transcend the individual episodes. It's because of River that the characters evolve. The trouble the crew gets into is almost entirely due to having River on the ship and it is through these trials that the crew becomes the characters they are. River is the heart of the show. Watch the episode 'Objects in Space' and you will see that.
But this is just one humble man's opinion. :)

In every other contest, people gave their opinions both for and against characters. It made the conversation better, even when they didn't like my favorite character, Dean Winchester. I understand that you love Summer Glau but other people have the right to give their opinion too. Instead of being upset that I don't agree with you, why don't you explain exactly why River Tam is such an awesome character. That would add to the conversation.

Well, when I said "soulful" I meant in that Edward Cullen way, where he veers off of killing humans/drinking human blood entirely. I personally liked soulful Spike in BtVS and AtS, because it showed a broader extent of his character (by the way, apparently he no longer has his soul in the BtVS Season 8 comics... ?), but I loved soulless Spike just as much. And in my very honest opinion, Spike as a whole never needed a soul. He was man enough as a soulless vampire that a soul wasn't necessary. Yeah, he has issues with the whole moral ethics code, but hell, the fact that he, as a century and a half year old vampire, had it in himself enough to even give a shit, was remarkable.

This has to do with voting for a certain character and understanding why that character deserves the vote. Dahne's point is that, with only 14 episodes, River Tam barely made an impression until the series was unfortunately canceled and the movie came out. You are deliberately trying to provoke confrontation because your own opinions are not being reciprocated by every single person on this board.

River is the central character of the Serenity posters because the situation with her life and her background finally came to a head in the movie. Season 1 of the series had barely gotten off the ground in order to properly explore it. It still does not mean that she is the central character of the entire series. The series as a whole remains as central to Captain Malcolm Reynolds and the ship Serenity, and Mal's cohorts who were all brought together by it.

I take it you have something against Dahne1's commenting? Hungry Emo is right. It's not trolling when you are expressing an opinion. I felt a lengthy explanation was necessary for why I voted for Spike. Given that there are people here who are clearly voting for River despite not knowing who her character is, for the sole reason that Spike beat a character that they wanted to win, doesn't mean Dahne1 isn't allowed to express her distaste for it. Snidely commenting about each of of Dahne1's comments doesn't make what you say any better. Don't use my comment as a springboard to attack someone else's opinion.

ReplyDeleteI would hardly say I am a troll simply because I don't like River Tam or that I disagree with you in what importance River Tam has in the show. It is apparent that she has the most fans from the Firefly fandom. I just don't get why. To me, she was almost a non-entity until the last episodes of Firefly. It was like they knew they were in danger of being cancelled so they made a last ditch effort to keep on the air by amplifying her character. As for Serenity, of course she was a main character. The vocal fans who worked so hard to make sure the movie got made obviously liked her. It's a no-brainer that if your fans got you the movie, you give the fans what they want. I watched Firefly because of the number of people who voted for River Tam in this contest. Maybe I went into it with too high expectations because of that. I found the character to be more annoying than anything and was pleasantly surprised by the other Firefly characters.

Not what I meant exactly. Just that it's an entirely different character in these photos. I love River and while I know she can kill all of us with just her brain, she spends most of her time on Firefly/Serenity being mentally unstable and having to be taken care of. In the photos used, Summer Glau is an entirely different character, and with a gun in each hand, she looks a LOT more capable, dangerous, and sexy. I'm not saying it's an unfair poll, just that it's not really an accurate representation of the characters...so yes, In a character poll, stuff like this matters. Just a little bit. River had most of the best lines, you just have trouble with nuance it seems.

I haven't been on these character competition forums much since SPN dropped out, so I've missed some drama for sure. I decided to check out the status of the competition and see how the characters were doing and read some posts. I don't know whether to get annoyed at some people or just start laughing at the absurdity.
