"Which in turns hurts a show with bad demos, because they don't have the money that shows with good demos receive." True, for some shows. Not all shows require a large budget to produce. For shows like The Event (ended shows like Lost, Heroes) budget constraints may affect the show but not for all shows. A show like The Mentalist wont require a large budget to produce and they can easily make enough money from ads, international markets, off-net syndication and dvd sales.
"The ratings are strictly for the advertisers." yeah. the ratings are measured and the information is maintained strictly for advertising purposes, but as a fan of the show, one maybe interested to know how many people are tuning into the show every week without going into all the specifics of demographics.
Uhhh.....if the advertisers don't like the demo of a certain show, they don't advertise on that show or they get there ads on those shows at a lower price. I really do not understand how the heck do they know the ages of the people who are watching their shows. And at my house, for instance, I watch NCIS with my parents and I possibly love the show more than them, but I don't fit the 18-49 demo. I'm 17! And people were saying on TV.com that, according to the ratings, only old people watch NCIS. What am I, then? A chopped liver?
Yeah, if u are an advertiser. Not if u are a viewer. Who cares if a 60 year old is watching or 20 year old; viewers are viewers regardless of their age.
How sad Is it the only one I watched are hawaii Five-O.NBC and Fox care about the 18-49 year old audence(well hard to know what Fox thinks) but CBS and to a lesser extent ABC care a lot about overall viewers. The CW meanwhile primarly cares about 18-34 women viewers.

Total number of viewers really don't mean much. It's the 18/49 Demo that counts.
