SpoilerTV FAQ - Getting the most out of the site

8 Jan 2011

Introduction
New people are visiting SpoilerTV all the time and as a result my mailbag gets full of emails from people asking questions about how to use the site, how to stay updated etc etc. So I thought it would make sense to try and create a FAQ/Help Article that tries to give you some information about getting the most out of SpoilerTV.

Working Your Way Around The Site

Navigation
Moving around the site is fairly straightforward but for some new users I thought it would be good to have a quick refresher.

The site, when you go to the homepage, provides a constant stream of news and information with the latest item being shown at the top.

Clickling on a post title will take you to the content of that post as well as giving you the ability to view any comments that have been left or to add your own thoughts.

You can also filter the homepage to show just the show that you are interested in. You can do this in several ways.

1) By selecting the show from the Navigation Menu

2) By selecting the show from the Dropdown menu in the sidebar

3) Clicking one of the show labels underneath one of the post titles.

Any of these will cause the homepage to reload and just show you articles that relate to that show.

Searching
You can also additionally search the site by using our search tool which is located in the Sidebar. Simply enter your search and press Enter or click the Search Button. You can also see below the search box the most popular searches currently on the site.

Submitting Scoop
This site relies heavily on YOU, the fans. When you find some new info that we've yet to post on the site, please use the "Submit a Scoop" link to send it to our team who will check and then post the info.

Staying Updated
With technology moving faster and faster and people consuming more and more information from around the web, it's very important that we provide you with several ways to stay up-to-date with SpoilerTV.

SpoilerTV provides you with a number of RSS Feeds that you can use in favourite feedreader or use in any widgets such as iGoogle etc. To view the RSS Feeds available simply view any post on the site and then in the sidebar you can see our list of RSS Feeds.

This is a great way to ensure you don't miss anything or if you are on the road. Simple use the form below to signup.

The commenting system is pretty easy to use. Simply type in your comment and press the Post Button. If you are already logged in then your comment will be posted immediatly, if you're not logged in your will be prompted to. Forums
A few years ago we added a Forum to the site and in that 2 years we've had over 500,000 posts, 20,000 Topics, and over 15,000 people sign up. It's a very friendly place to not only discuss your shows, spoilers and news etc but also join in a number of fun other discussions and games. There are also a number of non-tv related sub-forums. Have a look around and sign up... it's free :)

Mobile
We realise that a lot of people now use their mobile more and more to access content on the Internet and to stay up to date. I use my mobile (Nexus One) more and more these days.

We've designed SpoilerTV to be as Mobile Friendly as possible with all the latest smartphones and if you have one of the latest Android Phones the flash videos etc should all work.

Having said that we also provide some other Mobile features for those with older phones or low bandwidth.

Video Playing
Most of the videos we post on the site are standard YouTube videos. However, some sites use their own video players/formats. Most people have no problems playing these videos, however some people do. If this is you here are some steps that might help.

1) What Browser and version are you using?
2) Do you have any Popup/Ad Blockers installed?
3) Have you tried clearing your cache (http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cache)
4) Do you have the latest version of Adobe Flash (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=BUIGP)
5) Does it happen if you use another browser like Chrome?
6) Are you at Work or at Home? If at work, maybe your office have blocked the video.

Things Coming in the Future
We're always looking at ways to improve the site and to provide features that make it easier for you to use. Below are some of the features we've currently got in our To Do list.

Firefox and Safari Browser Extensions
With the success of our Chrome Extension, we're looking at migrating the code so that it can work for users of the Firefox and Safari Browsers.

Customisable Homepage
One of things we've been wanting to do for a while is to allow you to customise your homepage here at SpoilerTV. This would allow you to select in your options all the shows/sections that you want displayed on you page. Then whenever you revist the site it just shows the show(s) that you're interested in.

Android/iPhone and iPad Versions
We're looking at developing native applications for the major phone/pad systems. This should make accessing and using the site a lot more fun

Thanks for making it this far. We hope you have found this useful and as always if you have any questions/suggestions/comments please do not hesitate in asking us. You can either email me direct or you can leave a comment below.

  2. Would there be a way to show when articles have last been commented on kind of like the forums? The Supernatural ones can have a lot of comments to wade through to see if someone has posted something new. As always, thanks for this site and the many things you do to make it accessible and fun.

  3. It's not an exact science but they are based on "newness"(is that a
word?), number of views, number of comments, number of tweets, number
for facebook likes. It then puts all those into it's algorthim and
then spits them out into the widget.

  4. Wow, super-informative and awesome post. :)

  5. I have a question about the new Top Posts feature. How does it calculate what the top posts are? Sometimes things are listed at a 10 that have far fewer posts than things not on the list at all.

  6. Thanks Dark this article was really helpful because I don't come here very often so I'm not that familiar with the site. A cusomisable homepage would be the greatest thing in the world to have, I hope you will be able to do that!

  7. I am looking forward to having an app for my Droid!!! AWESOME

  8. I wish I could use Chrome, but I got some sort of weird glitch where certain programs (namely IE and Chrome) don't work at all, so I have to stick with Firefox for now. I've been meaning to get my harddrive wiped and start on a clean slate.

  9. I quite understand Jenni, it took me a while to move from Firefox to
Chrome, but now I have it's worth all the learning. There are some
great extensions for Chrome and it's just so fast.

  10. Yes, I have run into this issue from time to time as well. I found that if I didn't move the mouse so quickly the menus would stay intact.

I downloaded Chrome but...you know how hard it can be to make a full switch! I'm so at ease using Firefox I haven't really wanted to delve into a a new application. :P

  11. The site is wonderful and providing all these methods of following it is amazing. Great work!

  12. I used to have the same problem that Joseph has using Firefox, but now it works fine. I don't remember when it started working again, but maybe it started working fine when I updated to a newer version of Firefox (I have Firefox 3.6). That could explain why I no longer have that problem, but Joseph still does.

  13. Thanks Charles, glad you found it useful.

Let me know if you think I missed anything.

  14. That sums it up!
    Great job Dark!
    Your work is much appreciated....

  15. Thank you, that's very kind. You should try our Chrome Extension, even
    better than RSS :)

  16. You really should try Chrome. Not only is it faster, but you can use
    the SpoilerTV Extension :)

  17. I <3 your site so much! Its awesome! It's extremely useful for all my favorite shows. I love the RSS feeds. I'm always refreshing them. :P I do hope you come out with an iphone app. :D

  18. Firefox. I'm not sure what browser, I don't think I have the newest one. It happens to me infrequently. Generally the further down I have to go on a menu, the more likely it'll happen.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yep, it' probably the thing that will be at the top of my list of
priorities very shortly. It's one of the most requested features.

The Chrome Extension goes a long way to helping people but a homepage
of your choice is going to be even nicer.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yep, it's a nice thing to have. The problem is the cost. It costs $500
just to have a developer license and that does not guarantee that your
app will be accepted. I still then need to actually develop the app
    lol.

  21. Oooh! A customizable homepage sounds awesome. Sometimes so many things get posted in one day I miss something until I see someone comment on it in the recent comments. Love this idea! Thanks for always thinking of ways to make a great site even better.

  22. If you made the iphone app... it would probably be the greatest day of my life.

  23. My pleasure Sasha, even I'd forgotten about some of them lol

  24. This was a really great article, thanks for writing it up Dark! Even though I've been coming here a while I still didn't know about a lot of the features... now I do! :)

  25. Thanks Joseph, what browser are you using? I've never had an issue
    with the menus?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thought I'd add this pro tip: For some people, when you go to a drop down menu (i.e., you hover over the CW link and then want to go down to Supernatural), when you bring the mouse down the menu will disappear. You can get around this by hovering over the CW bar, and then using the down arrow on your keyboard to get to the link.

  27. Thanks Hoppy, glad you found it useful.

Yep, the customizable homepage is something I've wanted to do for a
while. It will probably be a Chrome only feature to start with but if
it proves successful we hope to have a version for Firefox, Safari and
    maybe IE.

  28. Thanks for posting this! I've been coming here for a while and didn't know about the email subscription, so that's something new I learned! A customizable home page would be awesome.

  29. Thanks for all the hard work Dark!

  34. I really just want a way to wade through the crap to get to the spoilers. Half of what I see now in the GA feed is the FAQ, the Charity Poll, the most popular shows on SpoilerTV's site, ect. A customizable feed where I can hide the stuff I don't care much about would be appreciated.
