Table now posted and the Cancellation Table has been updated.

Looks like Lonestar is dead with Chuck and Chase in trouble.

Folks...the following results are based on the metered markets (a.k.a. the Overnights). The fast affiliate results are currently delayed (and will be posted separately when they are available).

-----

Prime-Time Metered Market Ratings:
Monday 9/27/10

Note: The overnight data now includes DVR playback until 3 a.m. local time. One year earlier it was based on Live data only.

Household Rating/Share
ABC: 12.6/19, CBS: 7.4/11, Fox: 4.7/ 7, NBC: 4.6/ 6, CW: 1.5/ 2

----------

-Percent Change From the Year-Ago Evening (Monday, September 29, 2009):
ABC: +34, NBC: +21, CBS and The CW: no change, Fox: -25

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Dancing With the Stars (ABC), Two and a Half Men (CBS), The Event (NBC), Hawaii Five-O (CBS)

-Honorable Mention:
House (Fox), How I Met Your Mother (CBS), Mike & Molly (CBS)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Chuck (NBC), 90210 (CW), Lone Star (Fox), Gossip Girl (CW), Chase (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Dancing With the Stars-ignited ABC led this second Monday of the 2010-11 season in the overnights, with a considerable 70 percent advantage over second-place CBS. That should be more than enough to also dominate among adults 18-49. In the distant No. 3 spot was Fox, followed by NBC and lowly The CW, which just does not resonate in the overnights.

Another two-hour season-premiere of aforementioned Dancing With the Stars scored a whopping 15.0 rating/22 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., building by half-hour as follows:

Dancing With the Stars (ABC)
8:00 p.m.: 13.8/21 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 14.8/21 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 15.5/22 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 15.7/22 (#1)

Comparably, this outdelivered the year-ago overnight performance (11.0/16 on Sept. 21, 2009, also two hours), by an unprecedented 39 percent. My pick to bid adieu tonight: wooden Michael Bolton.

With mammoth lead-in support, season three of ABC’s Castle followed with a competitive second-place 8.0/13 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Dancing With the Stars, however, was only 51 percent.

Over at CBS, How I Met Your Mother (#3: 5.8/ 9) and Rules of Engagement (#3: 5.1/ 7) were on par with last Monday’s season-openers, but the network can do better at 8:30 p.m. given the normally higher HUT levels at 8:30 p.m. Another expected strong performance for How I Met Your Mother among adults 18-49 is enough for “honorable mention.” Old Eye net faithful Two and a Half Men remained just that, with a second-place 9.2/13 in the overnights at 9 p.m., followed by week two of sitcom Mike & Molly at a second-place 7.4/11 at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, Mike & Molly dropped by only six percent from last week’s premiere (7.9/12), with retention out of Two and a Half Men of an acceptable 80 percent. One year earlier, former occupant The Big Bang Theory was similar at a 7.4/11. Consider this an “honorable mention” performance for Mike & Molly.

At 10 p.m. on CBS, week two of the revival of Hawaii Five-O rose to a dominant 8.4/13 at 10 p.m. Comparably, that was 14 percent above lead-in Mike & Molly and down by a typical 14 percent from it’s week-ago debut (9.8/15 on Sept. 20, 2010). One year earlier, former occupant CSI: Miami averaged a 9.2/16 in the overnights.

Over at third-place Fox, while slowly deteriorating House finished second at 8 p.m. with a 7.0/10 in overnights (nine percent below the year-ago 7.7/12), week two of drama Lone Star fell off the charts with a mere 2.5/ 4 from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that was 11 percent below last week’s DOA debut (2.8/ 5 on Sept. 20, 2010), with retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in House (7.1/10) of just 35 percent. To make matters worse, Lone Star dropped by 11 percent at 9:30 p.m. (2.8/ 4 to 2.2/ 3). Chances are Lone Star will be pulled off Fox’s schedule this week. If you picked Lone Star as the first cancellation of the new season, chances are you are correct.

On NBC, surprise returnee Chuck is not capable of anchoring Monday, with a fourth-place 3.6/ 5 in the overnights at 8 p.m. Week two of lead-out The Event (#3: 6.3/ 9) built by a considerable 80 percent from the 8:30 p.m. portion of Chuck (3.5/ 5), with growth of 47 percent from year-ago failed occupant Trauma (4.3/ 7 on Sept. 28, 2009). One week earlier, The Event opened with a 7.5/11, and the erosion of 16 percent is nothing unusual.

At 10 p.m. on NBC, week two of drama Chase finished third with a lackluster 4.1/ 7 – 15 percent below last week’s already disappointing 4.8/ 8. Comparably, retention for Chase out of The Event was 65 percent. One year earlier, failed The Jay Leno Show was weaker at a 3.9/ 6 in the overnights.

The CW closed the evening with original episodes of 90210 (#5: 1.6/ 2) and Gossip Girl (#5: 1.5/ 2), which never deliver in the overnights and are considered “losers” using that benchmark.

  1. Nah. The CW is so glad to have another viewer that they invite the bear in and feed it scantily clad girls just to get it to stay.

  2. 'At NBC you don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the other guy.'
Very true. Lol. It's the same for the CW. ;D

  5. I wonder what would happen with all these ratings if shows like Dancing With the Stars and Idols didn't exist.

  6. I just read a post from Josh Schwartz that Chuck got a national boost, so I guess that is good!

  7. NOOOOO PLEASE DON'T CANCEL CHUCK!!!
It is seriously the most fun I have watching the tv.

  8. I am all for Fringe moving to Monday! I mean, like you said, House would be a better lead-in, and the direct competition between Fringe and The Event would be great to see.

    ReplyDelete
  9. well, I always thought there was no way Chuck would have another season...unless the chiefs of McDonald, Subway whatever want another one :D

    ReplyDelete
  10. Man, good taste is dead. How does garbage like Two and a half men and Mike & Molly have so many viewers while well-written shows like Lone Star and Chuck struggle?

    America, I am disappoint.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I've seen every single episode but what does that have to do with anything?

Also, please enlighten me, exactly where did I post anything rude or off-color and where did I make any claims to be an expert? I'm certainly not about to apologize for being informed and I'm not about to justify myself to someone who posted a rude, pointless comment and didn't contribute to the conversation whatsoever.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Do you actually watch the show? You sound like such a Mr. Smartass, but you're not an expert or a critic, you just have internet access lol.

    ReplyDelete
  13. "It is the only show on the net with an African American lead..."

You're mistaken. Undercovers is headlined by Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Some key things with The Event. It is the only show on the net with an African American lead and it is skewing older, and to more upper middle- class viewers. If they can get in some repeat showings on weekends to build momentum this one may be able to build. Like Nikita- the second episode provided more info and a bigger and more compelling hook than the pilot. Anyone else think the aliens are some of Stargate's Ancients? Now that would be a crossover event.....

    ReplyDelete
  15. H5O is yet to completely gel with me- though little Sammy Winchester as the kidnapped kid was decent last pm. I think Alex O'Loughlin needs to start every episode wet and shirtless to bring in the female viewers- it worked for Tom Selleck and he had that squeaky voice to overcome. So far my issue with the show is that the lead has about half the charisma of his teammates. Love Danno- Scott Caan is warm, relatable and has statement hair and a style. Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park make great backup- time for O'Loughlin to really make us care about Steve McGarrett. So far it is not happening. Did like the tease that James Marsters character may still be alive....

Re Chuck. Considering that frakking NBC can't even run a promo for the show- the ratings are decent.

Re CW shows- meh. Totally agree- the Friday night guys rock and I am loving Nikita. That show totally surprised me. The first episode I was not too sure but the twist that was revealed in the second one hooked me big time.

Winner at 10pm was Castle and it continues to deliver- Nathan Fillion is that charismatic.

    ReplyDelete
  16. They send the show to Comic Con and Paley Festival and I was seeing ads for Chuck non-stop for at least a month before the fall premiere, and that's on top of all the web promotion. That's more than most shows get, regardless of what network they're on.

The hard truth is that Chuck is a genre show on a low-rated network and, despite the more than adequate support of the network, there's only so much interest this show is going to draw.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Seeing the complete numbers Chuck got to Five Million. While the Event got 2.9 In 18 to 49 share It Is still
getting 8 Million In total viewers. It Is NBC'S best monday performance. How I met your mother actully beat House among 18-49 audence while House did better In total ratings.90210 got to 2.1 Million In total viewers. At the end of the season If the CW axes one of the monday shows it would be Gossip Girl.
The big shocker Is Castle beating hawaii Five-O among all viewers while Hawaii Five-O did slightly better among 18-49 year olds.As a firefly/Serenity fan glad to see Nathan Fillion have success like this although Castle Is probally helped by dancing with the Stars.

    ReplyDelete
  18. They either left because of season 3 or because they live on the other side of the world.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm sorry maybe I didn't explain myself very clearly, NBC is a jerkbag because they don't Promote it, They take forever till the last minute if they're going to renew, or add on a few episodes. And what's more 8:00pm is one big pit of shows who are pitted against each other and the one who has the strongest ratings wins the night. Myabe Chuck would do better on a different night but if Chuck is canceled this year, I'm washing my hands of NBC. I hope the network crashes after that and good riddence to it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree with the nielson system.I have said for years it Is crooked system.I also believe Inless I am wrong that only DVR numbers are recorded by those who are nielson familys and they have to be watched later that night to be counted.I believe Chuck has fallen behind what Heroes got In it's last season.Correct me If I remember wrong but didn't last season heroes got4/5 Million Viewers(Total) and Chuck got around 5/6 million. If next week's episode of the Event holds up well then It could be the only Monday NBC Show to go to full season. It actully held up pretty well this week.Remember the huge dropoffs V surfered.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yep, we;'ll try to update when we get the new numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Some ABC affiliates were showing Monday Night Football, those CASTLE numbers are going to go down some.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Those Live+7 numbers for Fringe are big. It would easily tack back on a few million viewers and half a point in the demo. That would probably be enough for the show to survive.

Besides, if shows like "Rules of Engagement" and "Mike and Molly" are teaching us anything, it's that people are very willing to just leave the channel where it is after the show they REALLY want to watch is over. :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. If NBC was being a "jerkbag" as you say, Chuck would of been canceled after season 1. No other network would of allowed a show with 5 million viewers and a demo number around 2 to stick around.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I've always thougth that Nielsen is such a stupid and inaccurate rating system. Chuck is suffering because of this, I hope Chuck will make it out of this lil' slump :| What I also don't get... where are the 2 million people who DID watch Chuck in it's first season?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Chuck having shaky numbers isn't a new story. Once again, If Chuck evens out, it may be okay based on the poor performances of other NBC shows. Chase and Undercovers are already on notice and if The Event continues to slide it'll be right there with them.

At NBC you don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the other guy.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Interesting idea about Fringe. Surely it would only pick up viewers
who recorded/dvr'd it? Can't see new viewers jumping on this late in
    the day.

It's the problem shows like Lost had, the new viewers after 2 seasons
    was very small.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Points of interest:

Okay, Lone Star is DOA. Fox should use this opportunity to save Fringe and get it as far away from Thursday @9 as possible.

Gossip Girl's fast affiliate numbers are very discouraging. I've seen the demo that low before but those total viewer numbers are unnerving for a show that was once the crown jewel of the network.

That drop to a 2.9 is too much for The Event. I'm sure NBC was hoping for better follow-up numbers. (It's also another good reason to slide Fringe in after House and go for a knockout.)

Mike & Molly has held up well for a very mediocre sitcom.

Lastly, Chase is chasing the drain already after falling to a paltry 2.1

    ReplyDelete
  29. Why are Nielsen boxes are the only ratings that matter? There's alot of Chuck fans myself included who don't have it and it's hurting the show. I blame NBC for this they haven't promoted it and they're the ones who have said the Nielsen box is only rating boost they use. It's not fair. chuck's a great show, it shouldn't have to die because the network is being the Jerkbag ever.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Really dissapointed with the ratings for Chuck, on the other hand, they received almost no promotion.... maybe The Event will take such a big fall that the decline of Chuck gets a bit covered up? I remember last year with Heroes, that because that show was cancelled they were way more hesitant to cancel Chuck too, as that would have been two (rather major) shows cancelled.

Am watching the Event, but I'd rather have Chuck than The Event, bit dissapointed with that show anyway so far.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yep, castle is pretty popular now. Shows what a show that only just
made a 2nd season can do.

Next weeks event details will be key. Lots of premiere lose their
initial audience. Weeks 2 to 3 are fairly revealing to see if they
    retain a core of viewers.

I've also not seen any +7/DVR numbers yet.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Excellent analysis again Chris.

H 5-0 seems to have slipped into the procedural route which is
disappointing. I hoped the reboot would add a bit more.

Chuck seems pretty doomed :( but it's been through this before.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hawaii Five-O Is the New CI or NCIS only with a little less viewers.I personally were turned off last night by going down the 24 road with torture.

Chuck Is going down faster than Heroes. The Event Is the brightside of NBC'S monday nights. It rises among
Chuck's audence and Chase Is having trouble keeping The Event's Viewers. The Event Is the most of the NBC Monday lineup most likely to make It to full season.

We were all right In saying Lonestar Is dead.

Over at the CW 90210 Is down to 1 Million In total viewers and Is only slightly more viewers than Gossip Girl.
Remember these shows are more promated than Smallville and Supernatural yet can't get their numbers.
Maybe one of these days the CW will realize their best non reality shows Vampire Diaries,Nikita,Smallville,Superantural can appeal to men and trying to Lifetime for network TV Is a mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Please no. Jess needs to stay dead or the whole Sam arc loses its meaning.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with your comment on diversity. I think CBS has an even worse track record in that department.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Most of the older folks I know who watch DWTS all watch Castle. They watch TV live unlike the rest of us who DVR everything.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sorry- I stand corrected! Still- after years of nothing- the net needs some diversity. Jimmy Smits show looks to be in trouble- Chase is DOA- will be interesting to see if the lead Kelly can get another shot at a series lead. Usually three times and you are out. Alex O'Loughlin is on his 3rd shot. Moonlight, Three Rivers and now Five-O.

Lonestar is now dead- maybe Adrianne Palicki can show up as one of the reborn on Supernatural at the back half of the season .

    ReplyDelete
  38. Gonna be interesting to see if The Event can at least keep these numbers, considering it's down more than 20% from last week.

Other than that... House still surprisingly weak, Lone Star is dead and I'm really surprised that Castle beat Hawaii 5-0.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Chuck has never been in an ideal spot. Monday Night isn't an easy night and it's still one of the stronger NBC shows. NBC has enough shows that are worse than Chuck that it should stay (not that it will). To this day, I don't understand why Chuck hasn't caught on with people with it's strong combination of comedy and action. It's a great show.

I am enjoying The Event and my Hawaii 5.0 addiction is more b/c half the locations (including the first 10 minutes of the second episode) were places I saw or stayed at during my honeymoon.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have some questions....first, how is 90210 doing after DVR is factored in? Last year it was the #1 watched show on DVR in it's demographic or on the CW or something along those lines...how is it doing now? Also, it is getting better ratings than GG so why is it that GG has been moved into the "Likely to be safe" portion of the table whereas 90210 is still in danger?
