Psych, White Collar, and Royal Pains - All Renewed
Sep 28, 2010
Psych Royal Pains White CollarUSA Network's entire programming lineup is returning next year: The network has just renewed "Royal Pains," "White Collar" and "Psych" for another season.
The network previously agreed to bring back "In Plain Sight," "Burn Notice," "Covert Affairs" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."
"It's a wonderful validation that the shows are working," said USA programming president Jeff Wachtel.
With seven returning dramas, USA is close to having a stable of successful hour-long shows that equals some broadcast networks. Though USA expects to once again launch one or two new dramas next year, executives plan to expand into new genres, such as comedy and unscripted programming, to help broaden the lineup.
"Though its lovely to celebrate success, it also allows us to push out -- you don't want to alienate your base, but you don't want to sit still," he said.
Even if the network reaches its broad-spectrum goals, Wachtel expects USA to continue feeling like a cable enterprise rather than a broadcast network.
"In our early days, original programming was seen as an elective," he said. "It's not an elective anymore, but it's also not an imperitive to fill time slots. We're still able to be more hand-crafted. We're not going to get to the point of, 'oh my god, we need a comedy block on Monday nights.' It's still going to remain 'no show before its time.'"
"Royal Pains" will return for 16 to 18 episodes, more likely 18, which helps the network split the show's season into two uninterrupted runs. The show was second only to its "Burn Notice" lead-in for delivering adults 18-49 this summer among scripted shows (3.5 million in the demo). "White Collar" will get 16 episodes and drew 2.3 million in the demo. "Psych" will also receive 16 episodes, and ranked as the summer's top scripted show on cable Wednesday nights in the demo (2.3 million).

Yeah. Psych is comedy-drama. Technically so is Royal Pains. But like Bruce said, they mean full blown comedy sitcoms.
ReplyDeleteAmen to that! One of the reasons USA is my favorite network is because I don't even have to see ads for all that junk. NO DATING SHOWS EVER, USA!!! No roses, no house mates, no celebrity house tours, and most of all, no D-list celebrities trying to grab another 15 minutes of fame. I hate STOP (Stupid People on TV) shows.
ReplyDeleteYep, great news :)
ReplyDeleteYES YES YES YES. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY I AM THAT PSYCH IS RENEWED<3 MY FAVORITE SHOW! BEST. SHOW. EVER. Thank you USA Network!!!

ReplyDeleteFor the love of all that is holy, do NOT succumb to lures of reality television.
USA Network, you may continually beat us over the head with NCIS, SVU, and House but at least there are no housewives, tribal challenges, Cardashians, no judges, dance competitions, love buses, Ray J, Gene Simmons, no trucks driving on ice, cake bosses, eating competitions, and most of all no Tyra Banks.
Keep taking the high road, USA.
Really? I don't find Royal Pains funny. But I like the idea of them going to 1/2 hour comedies a whole lot better than reality or game shows.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know anything new about Burn Notice? For a show starting in November, I'm surprised we are not getting more info on the second half of the season.
I am so glad to hear that White Collar has been renewed. I love that show!
ReplyDeleteYes!! I'm so happy all three of these got renewed. Especially Psych- I was kind of worried about that one. My favorite USA show <3
ReplyDeleteUmm, isn't Psych considered a comedy for USA? Glad to hear everything is coming back though. USA has some of the most consistently entertaining shows on the air. Burn Notice and White Collar for me, especially.
ReplyDeleteI think they're referring to 1/2 hour sitcom-type fare when referring to comedy. USA has a half-hour comedy in development with Ron White.
ReplyDeleteyay for psych! kudos to USA for having a solid lineup of shows
