The first priority of any sitcom is to be funny and, except for Barney, the episode wasn't that funny. All of the mother stuff is secondary no matter what the title of the show is.
Well, for me Marshall was a bit more funny than Barney, so I still can't agree with you. ;) Barney had few lines, High six and that was it. Marshall... did you saw his face, when he started to yell at Lily? Genius :D Jason Segel is putting so much emotions in his role.
Hardly. The S5 Bilson episode alone was more of a set-up for what the mother was actually like/what she did than the premiere. All the premiere did was tell us when they finally met and we got plenty of similar through-out the rest of Season 5 (the whole umbrella thing, etc).
I'm not saying this episode was bad; quite the opposite - I'm saying people should give Season 5 a break because it wasn't the stagnant mess they seem to remember it as!
Can't agree with you. The episode made us much further with the whole "who's the mother" thing than in any episode of season five! And this is first of 20+ episodes! I see a great season - great for viewers and great for staff making it. Why is that? We're getting closer to meeting the mother and they are leaving hints for us, which is great thing!
Anywho, the episode was great. Maybe not awesome, because the whole dips-thing was starting to annoy me, but in the end, we have clear clue about who the mother is and we're getting closer to meet her - and that's the point of this show. :)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

Except for all of the "dibs" stuff, this episode wasn't very good.
