But anyhow, I digress as we move onto the final day of Round One, and we have lost our first LOST character, someone I had in the semi-finals, John Locke. This half of the draw for me is buggered as I had a House vs. Locke semi finals, which is now not possible. This half of the draw now feels a lot more open for another Vampire Diaries or Smallville infiltration into the final couple of rounds. Damon Salvatore & Clark Kent must be laughing. If they were real...... :P
However we have some formidable characters entering the competition today, and after River Tam's demolition of Jack Bauer, would you bet against lead 'Firefly' Malcolm Reynolds to beat 'Supernatural's' Castiel. That has got to be a huge tie for both shows, and I'm eager to see which way it is going to go. Also we have recent emmy winner from 'The Big Bang Theory' in Sheldon Cooper taking on deliciously dark and murderously genius, otherwise known as 'Dexter' Morgan. Also we have 'Chuck's' Sara Walker taking on good 'Friend' Rachel Greene and we finish round one with 'Castle's' Kate Beckett taking on leader of the resistance against the 'V' Erica Evans.

*This was a close one for me. It took me a while to choose. In the end, while Mal had better one-liners and bravado, Cas has the better development (with the benefit of being on TV more) and is a more unique character.

No, but it is embarrassing that such a strong fan base lost by so much to a character that was only on for half a season and a movie. Not knocking the Captain, but it's kind of like losing to Captain Hammer. Good character, good actor, but not on long enough to have quite as much depth as some other characters. (Not that I'm saying Cas has been on long enough either.)
ReplyDeleteDean had 7000 votes and Sam had 1200 votes... They weren't different people you know... I voted for both and I voted for Castiel (even though I love, love, love Mal I voted for the one who was losing because I couldn't make up my mind)... At least Castiel had a larger turnout than Sam.
ReplyDeleteCaptain Malcolm Reynolds is not just a random person... He is an iconic figure in Sci Fi. He is the captain of Serenity on Firefly... It is no shame to lose to the best captain in the 'verse.

She was also great as Cameron from Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles. She is one of the most popular actress in the geek world and my favorite for the tournament.

ReplyDeleteIf I remember correctly, there was a poll a few years ago somewhat like this as a March Madness kind of thing and the whole thing came down to Barney Stinson vs. Dean Winchester. It was a very heated battle (if a contest between two fictitious characters can be called heated.) Dean hung on to win the final, so it's not at all surprising that the first round contest between these two was close.
ReplyDeleteI loved Firefly, but Mal wasn't really around long enough for me to consider him a great character. He didn't have enough time to develop. On the other hand, I've never really gotten attached to Castiel, so I didn't feel too bad about voting against him. Now put Mal up against Dean and it's no contest. I've had 5 years to fall for Dean Winchester, Mal Reynolds was never as dimensional.
I do like Fillion, especially in Castle, and I did enjoy Serenity. But regardless, no one can come close to Cas. You can't beat "the voice says I'm almost out of minutes" Or him holding the FBI badge upside down.

ReplyDeleteRemember the Fringe vs. Firefly poll in BSE? Bloodbath. It was the biggest poll of the whole competition until SPN vs the XFiles. Firefly got a TON of votes but somehow Fringe just blew up into like 6000 votes if I remember correctly.(that was in the first round where all the polls had around 500-1000 votes per show...) They are probably ready to "right that wrong"

ReplyDeleteCaptain Malcolm Reynolds (and possibly River Tam) are the only non-Supernatural characters I would consider voting for over Castiel or Bobby... I would even seriously kick myself but I would consider Mal over Sam and Dean... Not that I love him more than Sam and Dean, but he is just such an incredible character... In 14 short episodes and 1 movie, he made a life long impression on me... I can't say that about any other character except maybe Luke Skywalker... and I would probably vote for Malcolm Reynolds over Han and Luke also... But, when push comes to shove, I just have to pick my Supernatural characters... I have 2-5 years of memories with them and I only have 14 episodes and 1 movie for Mal... but for anybody that hasn't seen Firefly / Serenity... There's nothing in the 'verse like it.

This was soooo tough for me. It's just wrong to pit two of my favorite characters against each other, and I know I'll pay for it later, but.... in the end, my voting went like this: "I can't vote for Mal without feeling guilty about Cas. But I can't vote for Cas without feeling guilty about Mal! But Mal's been off TV for years, and Cas still has a strong following on TV NOW! And I'm a devoted minion to Misha Collins on Twitter! But I still love Mal! F**K it!.... I vote Cas."
ReplyDeleteSo, barring a possible Gollum-esque split-personality disorder, I decided to listen to the voices in my head that ranted for Cas. I love Mal, but in the end, Cas has had to struggle with being one of the top dogs in Heaven, to finding out he's basically been lied to, getting cast out of his home, getting blown up, losing his powers, and trying to make his way on Earth with two pig-headed brothers and a grumbly, loveable, gimp hick nagging along the way. (I say the latter with the utmost love and respect for Jim Beaver, because as Bobby, he makes me wish that he was real, just so I would have the pleasure to know him.) Cas's journey has been long, and hella hard for the past two years that he has known the Winchesters and Bobby Singer, and in the end, he's come out on top of it all.

NO! For the love of everything holy, no more Anna. If God brought Cas back because of his decision to stand up to Lucifer and Michael with Bobby and the Winchesters, then why in the hell would he bring back Anna? Mal vs Cas is insane. Cas is a great character because he's just so badass and hilarious at the same time, but then again...so is Mal.
I went for Cas in the end because SPN has so many years on Firefly and I think the Whedon-verse had their major victory yesterday with Spike beating Locke.
If I had my way, all 4 of them would be through to the next round though.

ReplyDeleteYeah, neither can I... and this is just the first round. What I actually can't believe is that Locke's lost with such a random character as Spike. I mean, he was a rock star in Buffy, but that happened years ago. I mean, seriously... Spike instead of Locke? You guys even watch TV? JOHN LOCKE IS THE FACE OF THIS DECADE IF WE TALK ABOUT TV!!! I felt really pissed off about it...
ReplyDeleteoh bummer, poor Cas... I really hoped he would make it at least through this first round, but for now hats off for his opponent. Anyways, love the angel to pieces, the way he's gone from a tough angel warrior, through doubts, discovering his emotions (God, how I love Dean making Cas feel... and I'm not even a slash fan :P), rebelling and being cast out of heaven to losing his powers, becoming more human, bonding to the brothers and finally getting his powers back to become a real angel again. Plus social awkwardness, drinking, ripping his shirt :P and sacrificing everything for Sam and Dean. I mean, seriously, as much as I love the Winchesters, Cas is the one who melts my heart most often ;)

ReplyDeleteIf you think about it - Gabriel might be back as well as a few other characters who stood up against what the Angels were doing. At the end Castiel was brought back because of his choices so we might see Gabriel and Anna back.

Dang this sucks I love Castiel and Malcom its hard to choose! But Supernatural is my fav I'm glad Sam and Dean made it to the next round at least.

ReplyDeleteFirst poll - I love both characters, but I went with Sheldon Cooper.
Second - Easiest for me - Sarah Walker. Rachel quickly became f'ing annoying on Friends. I only watched Friends for Chandler and Joey after a while.
Third - As much I love Castiel, Malcolm Reynolds is an amazing character. It sucks that Firefly didn't survive.
Fourth - My vote goes to Kate Beckett. Erica Evans is cool and all but she hasn't really done much. Elizabeth Mitchell was awesome on LOST though.
Sorry. That distinction goes to Gabriel for me. Still, I vote Cas.

There always is. If I remember right, there were more comments about SPN in the Vampire Diaries vs. the Wire round of the Best Show contest, and SPN wasn't even in the running that day. We were making plans for the next day simply because the other fandoms weren't commenting.

I agree with that too, Buffy was really huge, i watched the show, but LOST was more huge. It was a hit in every country that it was shown, and in the internet, downloads were crazy! Lost and some other series (as Heroes, 24 and so on) sort of changed the way of watching TV, because people started to watch series in their computers (i'm from another country so that's what i have to do), and LOST was the icon of that! it was massive! But, i don't know, it really touched me because LOST is my fav series ever.
