Doctor Who - New Series split in two - Press Release

29 Aug 2010

The BBC and Steven Moffat have announced today that the transmission of the next series of Doctor Who, in 2011, will be split into two blocks, transmitting in spring and autumn.

The split transmission is the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series. By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens.

Steven Moffat said: "The split series is hugely exciting because viewers will be treated to two premieres, two finales and more event episodes. For the kids it will never be more than a few months to the next Doctor Who! Easter, Autumn, Christmas!!"

  1. And... this is not for the recent changes about Sherlock Holmes season 2, due to the fact that our dearest Watson is going to appear in The Hobbit, and the readjust that they have done in filming??

  2. I'm so glad that the whole thing hasn't been moved to Autumn, which is what the rumour over the last couple of months has been. Splitting it in two is ideal imo, how many families want to gathered round the TV at 6pm on a blazing hot June evening.

I know many are catching up with iplayer/timeshift, but I have a feeling that's probably more the adults rather than it's target audience. This way the kids get a cliff hanger for them to talk/speculate about over their summer holiday, and then get to watch the finale in the autumn when families are more likely to be able to watch it all together.

  6. Sounds exciting, although I'm not sure I like the idea of waiting :(

  7. This way you won't have to wait for so long for a new 'series' :D

  8. I'm almost sure that twist will involve River Song. I hope we see more episodes with Doctor's daughter too.
