Thanks to Raiths for the heads up.
Though we just spoke to "Supernatural" showrunner Sera Gamble at Comic-Con, there's always more to say about those Winchester boys. When Zap2it caught up with her at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, we asked her the question on every fan's mind. Will we ever see Dean's amulet again?
The necklace, which Sam (Jared Padalecki) gave to Dean (Jensen Ackles) when they were kids, was a staple of Dean's wardrobe until this season, when Dean discovered that he wasn't a part of Sam's heaven and tossed it in a motel trash bin, much to our chagrin.
So we have to know -- did Sam retrieve it?
"Maybe," Gamble says coyly. "I can say that you won't be seeing the amulet any time soon, but I can't necessarily say you'll never see it again."
When Season 6 opens, Dean -- sans amulet -- has been living with Lisa Braeden (Cindy Sampson) and her son, Ben, for a year, believing that Sam is dead. "Last season when we were conceiving the idea of Dean settling down, we knew we couldn't just choose any woman from his long history of women," Gamble says. "Dean's driving force has always been his devotion to his family. He puts family above all else. We knew that no matter what his connection was to Lisa, or how wonderful she was, or great the sex was, it's about family. For Dean it's not about wanting to be with Lisa as much as it's about wanting to be part of a family unit."
If you're expecting Lisa to die a fiery death in the season premiere as a throwback to the pilot, think again. "Lisa will be recurring in the first half of the season," Sera confirms. "She's not just a one-off thing."
Gamble has taken over Eric Kripke's position as showrunner, though he remains in place as executive producer, but that's not the only shake-up in the "Supernatural" writers' room. Fan favorite Jeremy Carver is heading up the U.S. version of the BBC's beloved "Being Human," so he's no longer part of Gamble's writing staff.
"We're so happy for him," she says. "As a fan of the BBC version of the show, it's in good hands. We'll miss him on our show, but we're thrilled for him, and the door is always open, so who knows what will happen. He could be contributing. He wrote some of our best episodes. In fact, I think if you asked Eric Kripke, away from all the other writers, he'd say that 'Changing Channels' is his favorite of all of our episodes."
Kripke has said many times over the year that he'd planned a five-season arc for "Supernatural." Now that the series has moved into Season 6, we couldn't help but wonder whether this is the end.
"We know how we want the series to end," Gamble says. "Right now, we're sort of doing something that not many shows have done in the past, which is to say we've closed out our first story and we're moving on to a second chapter. We're not necessarily approaching it as our last season, but we are prepared for the eventuality. We've got an endgame, absolutely."
By the way, just because "Supernatural" has a female showrunner now, don't expect Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki to be taking their clothes off any more often. "I think the shirtlessness ratio is the same," Gamble laughs. "It's cold in Vancouver! I have to put their health first."

We better see that damn nackles again!
ReplyDeleteOTH with monsters anyone?
ReplyDeleteMore spoilers-
BEN EDLUND SAYS GABRIEL IS COMING BACK!
They haven't fully worked out how he'll be brought back (he may be real, may be an incarnation) but Ben says "we just love him."
The characters who are brought back this season will get to tell about where they've been during the timejump, and some have been in some "really awful places." -Edlund
Sera Gamble confirms that at season's opening Dean is living with Lisa and Ben (12), but they're not married.
Dean does everything he can to keep his new family out of hunting. In episode 1 Dean says something like "They're in trouble because of me. I didn't get out, all I did was drag them in." -Ackles
For the season opener, "Dean’s new family will be very much a part of it and Bobby will become involved with them to an extent." -Beaver

What no extra shirtless scenes? Lol just kidding. I'm glad that they are moving on with the story and adding new dimensions to it instead of continuing with the angel vs demon aspect.
ReplyDeleteFinally some good news. Gabriel back - yippee! Bobby involved with Dean's life with Lisa - well thank goodness. I refuse to believe that Dean cut Bobby out of his life after all the things he said about Bobby being like a father to him. If Dean pulls a Twilight where every single character went spastic and flipped into new people, I will watch the show but pretend it is all a bad dream (maybe they are all lost in purgatory too) and go live in the fanfic world.
ReplyDeleteThe amulet is gone because it's either in the bin or still with Sam that's not really a surprise. We don't know yet if Dean just abandons Lisa and Ben. Why would we get to see her until the middle of the season if Dean just walks out and that's it. I find Dean's story very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what to say about the Metallicar...Oh, yes! Sera is just evil!
I love it. I just hope they don't put Gabriel into a different vessel. I want Richard Speight.
ReplyDeleteThe writers could have dealt better with the demon side of the apocalypse storyline. Sam and Dean's story was great. Shirtless scenes....daydreams...when did we last see them shirtless? I can't remember it seems like ages ago.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited about the new season coming up! There seems to be a lot of people out there who weren't entirely happy with season five, but I'm not one of them. I loved the way Sam and Dean dealt with all the s**t thrown at them - every way they turned they got screwed, and I thought their reactions were exactly as they should be. I like the concept of this being the "second chapter". Really anything could happen - and probably will. Yay! Not too worried about the absence of shirtless scenes (although they are nice) From my perspective Sam and Dean are more like 'wayward sons' - I always just want to give them a big hug when the s**t hits the fan.
ReplyDeleteOh I am a fan and have spent countless hours defending this show from people who have dismissed it without watching it. I've watched every episode since the Pilot and have seen all episodes except 3 during its original show time (had job commitments for those 3). I have even contacted companies that aired commercials during the show to tell them how I appreciated them supporting SPN when it looked like the WB/CW was going to cancel it.
ReplyDeleteHowever, even fans can be worried about the direction a show takes and can be concerned that the showrunners don't ruin what has been excellent about the show. In fact, it's the fans who have the real right to guard the show's quality. I will give Sera Gamble a chance; I even said that elsewhere. In fact, I have liked many of the episodes that she has been involved with. I love SPN and at the end of its run I want to feel it has been worth the vast amount of time and money that I have spent on it. I could not say that about The X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer who had both been my favorite shows at one time. I do not want Supernatural to fall in that category and only a fan that truly loves their show would care so much about it.
I still maintain that Sam should have surprised Dean with the amulet before he headed off to join Lucifer. It would have been a symbol of how much he trusts his brother and how no matter where they ended up they were still brothers. I think the fans connect with that trinket more than the writes/show runners know. They missed a great opportunity to show emotion without being maudalin.
ReplyDeleteLazarus Rising, probably. Unless Dean and Anna's ...scene in Heaven and Hell counts.
ReplyDeleteOk, so Metallicar is rusting in the garage, the amulet is gone, one of the best writers is gone, and Dean starts the show by abandoning the new family he has made for himself just like that jerk John did. Not off to a good start folks. Thank goodness Sam sounds more interesting. (Let's just not have anymore Dumbledore impressions shall we.)
ReplyDeleteI like what Sera said about Dean and Lisa, what Lisa represents for him, that it's not about being his "one true love." Now that Dean lost Sam, he desperately needs a family to belong to - and Lisa and Ben are IT, a family unit that welcomes him.
ReplyDeleteSera is such a tease in this interview. LOL
ReplyDeletewe have had 5 wonderful seasons and i expect the same from the 6th. if your not interested dont watch it.i am a sammy fan but u love dean also give sera a chance to show whats she got. you wont be disappointed im sure. and if you are, tough then you werent a real fan . phyllis
