SpoilerTV Best Show Ever 2010 Winner: Supernatural

Day 32: And we have our winner of the 2010 Best Show Ever competition and with a commanding final victory, Supernatural has seen off The Vampire Diaries to take the first title and congratulations to the show, and to everyone backing it throughout the various rounds. Tough for The Vampire Diaries as it never really got going until the last few hours, but by then it was far too late and Supernatural crossed the line first.
It's been a long and winding month, with many shocks, surprises and in the end, a huge community gathered in the final week to see our biggest polls by far and really add a feeling of triumph to the final matchups. I hope that our 2011 competition goes on to become bigger and better, and I am already working on a few new rules to answer several of the criticisms that the competition unsurprisingly faced seeing as it was my first attempt at such a tournament, and also on SpoilerTV it was the first of what I hope will be many. There won't be another Show Competition for another year, but in a couple of weeks look out for the beginning of our "Favourite Character Competition" which I hope everyone will tune into from the start, and feel free to post and comments and tips for that competition here also, I will trawl through as I make the final adjustments to all the pre-tournament info before I release the initial nomination phase.
I have thoroughly enjoyed creating the competition for everyone, and it has taken up a large chunk of my time, so it has been great to largely hear positive feedback, with only a few unnecessary comments from several viewers. I'm proud of how successful it's been and even if you don't agree with the results, I hope you've had fun, it's opened your eyes to some new shows, and you got a chance to defend your true love against other shows fans. And keep heading here to SpoilerTV as we all love TV, and it's run by people, like DarkUFO who love TV, and it shows by the way the site is run. Thanks also to Dark for his support in getting the competition started and for allowing me to do it.
The Brackets haven't been finalised and updated but when they are, we will announce the winner and sort out the prize here. One thing is for certain, it isn't me :P

These competitions have been mostly friendly but that contest gets vicious right from the start. Other fandoms will worry about claws coming out. We start with holy water and then start bringing out the sawed off shotguns, wicked curved sword, and hexbags. It's going to get nasty folks and I can't wait.

ReplyDeleteI'm so proud of my show!!! It didn't feed off of popularity or trends, just pure fan devotion to what is truly the best story and characters I've ever seen. I'm a member of many fandoms, but I've seen fans like the ones for Supernatural. The show just "gets to you", and you can't shake it. I love my SPN family! Great job guys, and congrats to TVD and Lost and all the other shows that made it so far!

ReplyDeleteIt is weird how the numbers disappear. My guess is doing the math would get you pretty close if you allow for rounding errors. For example:

Check: 3949 + 3697 = 7646
I can't express in words how thrilled I am that Supernatural won this competition, and I'm so positively surprised to see Doctor Who on the 12th place, since it's my #2 favorite show :)

I'm pretty sure there wasn't a way around it. Lesley might have just been under the illusion that it was contributing every time you clicked it but it wasn't, after your first vote, clicking on the show and hitting vote didn't add anything to the tally.

Sure Dean is "tortured hero" and he's so "sad" and he's so "right" and he's so "emotionally tortured"! Feel sorry for him! (Despite the fact that Sam went through a lot of bad stuff too)
Ever Since S4, it all turned into Dean fest, with Dean, the tragic tortured destined hero, doing the awesome things, saving the day, getting char development, while Sam, this side character(who is wrong) does everything wrong and screwed up a lot.
As for Angels. The idea is decent - execution of it? BAD. Every scene with angels either involves two of them talking to each other in slashy fashion or is castiel-fanservice.
Oh and I am pissed off that they confirmed and shown heaven. I LOVED the idea that there's a lot of evil, but "good" is just what humans themselves can do - there's no "higher force", "higher power" that would solve problems for us or kill bad stuff, there are no lines of battlefield. There's just this unimaginable evil surrounding humanity and its up to humanity to fight it. Haven/Angels/God carebear-ism of season4-5 never clicked right with me.
Sam is the one who stopped the apocalypse by sacrificing himself. That's pretty heroic.
ReplyDeleteI think it's funny that you hated that Kripke put heaven in the show. Most people who criticize genre shows say that they only show the bad supernatural and they never show the good. They don't like that there is no balance in supernatural forces. I think that is one reason why Kripke did - he had the guts to go where others would not. (Not that the supposed good ended up being good in Kripke's version. That's what I did not like.) Most shows, Buffy for example, never even explore the other side. I found it refreshing.
Some people (my dad, sister-in-law) found the middle of season 1 too repetitive with the monster of the week theme. However, hang in until the whole Winchester clan gets together. It's quite a wild ride and the end of season 1 goes out with a bang.

ReplyDeletejust to be precise - the "omg Sam started the Apocalypse" was only possible in season 5, not 4, coz he killed Lilith in the last episode. So if we're talking about season 4, which we are, coz I agreed with you on season 5 being weaker, it's actually Dean the one who started all this. And come on, he went to hell and back, he had every right to be sad and emotinally tortured ( don't you think it'll be similar with Sam in season 6?). And yeah, they made Sam look wrong for one season, so what? It was actually interesting to watch for a change, instead of all the: Sam is cute, sweet and innocent from before.
ReplyDeleteAbout heaven - I wish they hadn't literally shown it, I'd prefer it to remain mystery and on this one I totally agree with you. But as I said - I felt that a kind of a confirmation was needed. I liked the angels from season 4 very much - tough soldiers, who only follow orders and usually don't give a crap about people. But then in season 5 the fact that Castiel was actually the only one good out there, became kind of tiring already.

ReplyDeleteI kind of agree with you about season 5. I was disappointed with the majority of the episodes, in fact I almost stopped watching the show after Changing Channels, which I tough was terrible (the second half), and I hated the fact that they forced the Trickster into the angel storyline. And I agree with Kitanishi H McDonald about the "dean/big hero sam/useless jerk" thing. However, the season finale was fantastic. As for season 4, I haves mixed feelings about it because there were 3 or 4 really horrible episodes and the last couple of eps were a huge disappointment. But overall I liked it.

ReplyDeleteI actually loved season 4, I think it's one of my favourites. The idea with the angels was fresh, interesting, new and unexpectable back then and I thought it was needed, since all that "there is hell, but there's no heaven" attitude from earlier seasons kind of annoyed me. Oh, and it wasn't a "Dean is a hero" attitude - after all, he tortured souls in hell, remember? Maybe they made Sam look wrong, but in season 5, he was the one reasonable and ready to face all the evil, not Dean.
ReplyDeleteI do agree season 5 was worse than the others, but still think this show in general is too amazing to be given up on just for one worse season. And for the record, season 5 finale was great, different than the others, but great.
And here's the good news: the Apocalypse is over so we can go back to where we were in seasons 1-2 - at least that's what they've been promising us ;)

I was thinking we could do our own poll on individual episodes. Maybe pit episodes from different seasons against each other just to change it up from the usual best episode from season 1 thing. So the first episode from all 5 seasons would go up against each other. Then the second episode from all 5 seasons against each other, etc. What do you think?

Shame so many good and worthy shows of a higher place were knocked out so early, but that's no suprise. Can't say I anticipated Supernatural being the winner. TVD benig heavily voted for isn't much of a shocker given the nature of the shows from the attained results though.

Season 3 was promising and the whole "hell politics" thing was interesting.
Then Season 4 comes and Kripke begins to spew crap and seriously increase the whole "dean is a hero, sam is useless and wrong" stuff.
Oh and angels ! Yay for useless overpowered beings created for either being an obstacle or slash object.
Season 5 on other hand while had two or three decent eps, was pure shite. "omg what a bad world, lets hug and be family".
Heck, forget that, SPN does not deserve this win for horrible season5 finale alone.

ReplyDeleteYes he killed lilith. But without Dean going nuts in hell, there would be no apocalypse anyway. What the entire world does? Lets blame Sam~ Dean pretty much got a free-pass for his part in starting all of that.

No. They did 3 seasons of Sam and Dean working together, but everything was more or less about Dean. Then they promised that they will give Sam stuff to do. Then they went ahead and gave more of Dean, sidelining Sam even more. And here comes season 5 finale where Dean saves the WORLD(ye sure Sam jumped in but after he realized how WRONG he was thanks to Dean...)
what are you, crazy? I didn't say that because of killing Lilith Sam was responsible for the Apocalypse. I actually said it was Dean. And then again, all I wanted to say was, if you're talking about season 4 (which we were actually talking about), don't say people blamed Sam for the Apocalypse cause it was impossible back then. And even in s5, I don't see much of blaming Sam for it - it was more about Dean not trusting him - not because he killed Lilith, but because he trusted a demon over his brother. And I didn't see anyone saying Dean saved the world in s5 finale. Actually, since about 5x17, it was Sam who remained the strong one, the believer, the fighter, so technically at the end of season 5 Sam was the hero, not Dean.
ReplyDeleteIf I recall right, most people were upset with Kripke in the first 2 seasons because they felt that Sam was the star and Dean was the sidekick. They didn't like that Sam had a starring role in the mythology and Dean wasn't connected at all. Then Kripke promised that Dean was involved in the mythology too; we would just have to wait. For me season 4 was a relief because Dean did become a part of the overall mytharc instead of just protector of Sammy and his weird psychic stuff. In the mytharc, it basically boils down to this:

Season 2 - Sam is a special kid and Dean has to protect him but fails
Season 3 - Dean is going to hell and Sam has to protect him but fails
Season 4 - Sam has special demon powers and Dean has to stop him but fails
Season 5 - Sam and Dean are both special and Sam saves the day

ReplyDeletewell, of course it hasn't aired yet in my country (but still, I'm kind of surprised they even showed season 4 this spring), but in here it's just like this: it's the TV that makes you interested in a show, but then there's no way you would wait for them to air it when you have all the episodes available to watch online, screaming at you to turn them on ;) so yeah, I have seen season 5, but no, it hasn't aired here yet.

ReplyDeleteIf it was the Pilot, you are off to a good start. If it was a different episode, make sure you come back for more... Sometimes it takes several episodes to pick up the strong family ties; sometimes that gets obscured in all the action. Polls like this are the only advertising Supernatural gets. So many people haven't even heard of us. Thanks for giving the show a try... If you continue, you will be happy you did :-)

ReplyDeleteSorry but SPN definitely did not deserve this thanks to an extremely lame season 4 end and season 5 almost in entirety! The fandom is strong but a lot of us are falling away thanks to changing the show to a chick flick with baddies that are getting too easy to kill.
ReplyDeleteUp to mid way through season 4 it deserved this title. Now it more deserves the title of "Most disappointing developing series".
I'm not even a "so and so" should have won person, I think there's at least 10 current TV shows that deserve this title over Supernatural. The change in the show has downright annoyed the crap out of me! Kripke - you suck! No wonder he's bottled it and left the show, he gave up in season 4!
