Seeing as we are approaching the end of what has been, in large a very successful first site competition (barring forums and LOST pages) I am starting to glance into what I could do next on the site for everybody.
The common popular choice thus far and what I hope to be the next event has been a "Favourite Character Competition" which would run the same way as the "Best Show" competition with a final 64 characters competing for the title. I will look myself into where the "Best Show" competition had weaknesses and try and improve and add more fairness and structure to the competition. The main idea is limiting each show to a set number of characters, likely to be 3 or 4 to avoid domination by any particular show.
I'm interested to know what people would like to see that could make this competition better and bigger than the "Best Show" Competition, and what feedback people have that I can bgein to put into effect for the next competition
In order for this to happen, it would be nice to have a little bit of help with a couple of the areas that aren't so much my expertise. For a decent presentation of the characters, I would like someone good with Computer Design to create a good character image, similar to Dark's images on his Episode Poll, that have a similar structure and will add to the competition. I can help with design ideas, but I don't have the skills to make them happen :P So if any one or number of people is interested then comment or email me ( adam.d.harris1989@googlemail.com )
As well as this Competition, I will be Show Experting on Fringe and House, as well as reviewing both along with other shows that fill the void LOST has left me with. I'm looking forward to the various things I hope to do, but I do it for my entertainment as well as yours, and I want it to be as good as possible for you. So leave any comments, feedback, ideas, and if anyone wants to help with anything I am planning, or have good ideas you want to do yourself and put into motion then I'm available to help out too.
I love TV, and I love SpoilerTV, and I'm excited for the new seasons to begin, and hopefully we can make both even more enjoyable.

Oh, and don't forget to vote in the Semi-Finals (Today and Friday) and the Final (Saturday) of the Best Show Competition, looking very likely to be Vampire Diaries making a surprise appearance in the Final alongside either LOST or Supernatural. May the best show win.

- Good idea to limit it to 4 max per show. Maybe split it Male and female as well
- Use the bracket software again as it makes it a lot of fun trying to predict
- Get people to post in the comments their nominations?
- some sort of prelim poll to get us down to the finale brackets.
- Get people to submit a video of their fav character in action
- Maybe a prelim round where only 2 (1 male and 1 female from each show can go through?)

ReplyDeletePersonally I dont see it being anything more than a popularity contest and you know it'll turn into a shallow 'WHOSE THE HOTTEST' showdown.
My idea for a 'BEST CHARACTER' poll would be to have people post video's and character profiles/bios for their favourite characters. We have a panel of judges who review all the entries and come up with the final contestants who will take place in the showdown. That way the is likely to be less bitching, less bias and it wont matter if people havent seen the show the character was in before. The competition can be controlled to reflect true character depth and development. A 'FAVOURITE CHARACTER' contest just wont reflect that, it will most likely just turn into a pretty boy competition. I mean I can already see the Dean v Damon bout as the outcome? Its just asking for trouble.
First: I agree with spoilergirl about spliting male or female. And maybe when we have our fav female and male we can do a fight between them for fun. ;)
ReplyDeleteSecond: I wasn,t there for the first round of this competition so i dont know how it worked... but i thought that 1 against 1 is way.. to long and maybe for the first round we could put more together and the best 4 moves on. But when we get to quarter round then its 1 vs 1...
We had 4 '1 vs. 1' per day so technically 4 went through a day then also. I'm working on a male vs. female idea as that seems quite popular. I'll see what I can do :)
ReplyDeletePotentially, as the Bracket is divided into 4 quarters, a good way could be:
Quarter One: Male
Quarter Two: Female
Quarter Three: Male
Quarter Four: Female
That way from the Semi-Finals the Male + Females Come together. However we could have Male vs. Male in Round One then it merges for Round Two.
I'm thinking about opening the Competition on the 1st of August, so I have a few weeks to finalise things.
There will be a nomination stage though, which will be narrowed down etc etc.

Don't forget a lot of big shows were gone before word spread. there is likely to be a lot more support for the Greg House's and the Chandler Bing's and the Buffy Summer's etc etc. now word has spread from the first competition
ReplyDeleteAs it is a best character and not actor/actress, an actor can be technically nominated for several series; for example Summer Glau has two main Characters, River Tam on Firefly and Cameron on Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

I did this alot at the time TSCC was still on air : i voted for Summer Glau in a "Who's the sexiest female in a Scy-Fy show" type poll because i supported TSCC. Even though she wasn't the sexiest in my opinion.

ReplyDeleteI can see that I'm in the minority, but I actually think it would be fairer to have male and female characters compete against each other all the way, rather than in the finale. It seems to me that the chance of characters getting an "easy" run through the main part of the competition is higher if you split male and female.
ReplyDeleteAn alternate split could be genres (comedy, sci-fi, drama, crime, horror, teen just throwing random categories out here). Male and female characters within each category could battle it out until only one is left standing, and then the genres could battle it out until one character emerges that (ideally) transcends all the genres. That way you wont see Betty Suarez battling Gregory House until they've each won their genre.
As for getting it down to 64. How about starting with a list of any character that get more than 10 nominations. Put it on Dark's webpage, so people have to register to get a vote in who goes through to the competition. Mora commitment that way. And those people will then have to pick 64 characters each. And the vote wouldn't count unless you picked 64.

If you will begin it in second half of August or even on the 1st September it will be more popular and more people will participate this competition.

I think doing videos for each character would be awesome but also very time consuming. I would suggest little funny character reviews but from the pov of the character. Something like: "Hi, I'm Dean Winchester and I'm Batman..... Something funny and interesting. I don't think you should separate into male and female, where would be the fun in that? Maybe arrange the bracket groups by comedy, drama, sci-fi, fantasy characters.

ReplyDeleteZiva is great. Much better than Kate in my opinion, but if you really want a girl who can kick it, hands down it is Fiona Glenanne. No one can tear things up like she can. Who else has a constant stash of C-4 at the ready and can shoot so well that even when she is trying to miss it looks credible? Definitely Fiona.
ReplyDeleteI think it should finish before most TV shows come back on the air. I love that it is something to do in the hiatus. That way an individual episode does not make or break a character because it happens to air while we are voting for them. I mean The Event is being hyped up all over the place. You don't want a character competing who has only been on for one episode. That would be like the Teen Choice Awards voting on Toy Story 3 for best movie before it even came out. (Not that it didn't end up being great!) Plus if you run this contest during season premieres you will lose some people who will be too busy watchign and commenting on their shows. I say strike while the iron is hot and it is supernova right now.

I like the idea of having a nomination ballot of anyone who gets a certain number of votes but I would think with 7,000 people voting in this contest, we would have to make it more than just characters getting 10 votes - maybe 50. I really like the idea of people registering so no one gets to nominate more than once. I also think you should nominate no more than 5 characters. If not some people will nominate everyone who has ever been on their favorite show. Also only recurring characters should be allowed. I refuse to see Paris Hilton as a character because she guest starred once. I don't like the idea of people having to pick 64 characters in the nomination process. That would mean people voting for characters they have never heard of and that ruins the whole nominating point. I say people can only vote for their top 10 on the nomination list so they have to make a conscious choice.
ReplyDeleteI don't think a lot of people knew about this contest when it first started. There are a lot of shows I would have expected to see but weren't in there. That's why the best character one is going to be such a fight. The biggest fights will be at the nomination stage. If each person is only allowed to nominate a small number of people, it will force fandoms to split themselves and may make for more interesting combinations than you'd think. I don't think anyone should be able to nominate more than 5 characters. Already I would be voting against my fandom because my favorites are spread out amongst many different shows.
ReplyDeleteIf the 2 characters meet each other before the semifinal rounds, the fans will take care of which one they want. That way the fans get a say and no one is stuck with the same actress or actor in the finals. Sumemr Glau really doesn't do anything for me, but I would have a hard time choosing between Dean Winchester and Alec. Just watch the Berrisford Agenda and try to choose. Man, Dark Angel would have been a great show if they had just killed off Max.

You have Dean/Sam, Damon/Stephan, Mulder/Scully, Barney/Marshall, House/Cuddy, Locke/Jack, Jacob/Ben, Walter/Olivia, Buffy/Spike, Tony/Ziva, Booth/Bones, Mal/River Tam, Jed/Josh, Lorelai/Rory, Castiel/Bobby, Angel/Fred, Cameron/Derek, Echo/???, etc. all competing against each other in the first round and then the rest of the game gets very interesting very quickly. The fandoms will devour themselves and a more balanced group would emerge by the third round.

ReplyDeleteActually I don't think it would be a Sam vs Dean (or Stephan vs Damon) smackdown. They would just need to meet each other before the finals. Then the numbers would not allow it because the SPN vote would be split allowing one character to advance. Actually that may be the way to do it. Have characters from the same show meet in the first round and get it over with. Then each fandom will have chosen their show's representative in the fairest way and no one has a final with 2 characters from the same show. In fact, I would say this is by far the best way to handle it so no one show takes over the whole shebang but fans still get to choose who they want to represent them. BTW, no contest - it is Dean Winchester over Sam any day. Or maybe Bobby.

As for the male vs female thing, why don't we split it up into 2 different contests. That way we have the August hiatus covered and most shows don't start until the end of September or later so we can really cover the hiatus the whole way through. This also allows for more characters to be entered and gives each contest more depth and hopefully with that, more viewers. I don't think the nominating system needs to be complicated. No matter if you take it to a nominating board or not, this is always going to be a straight popularity thing. It's the shock of a bad character winning that makes it so controversial and heated. Just wait and see what happens when it looks like VD is going to win this contest. We may not like it but it definitely gets a more passionate conversation going and that is where the fun lies. Let people whine and complain. That's what the internet is for,

And Alec was totally awesome, but the character only had one season to develop so I think he'd be no competition for Dean. Anyway, I love both and it's not because Jensen is hot. He's just lucky enough to play great characters ;)

ReplyDeleteYou've got to see Burn Notice. She is an ex-IRA member who helps Michael, a burned American spy, help out the little people of Miami. (No, not leprechauns...that would be SPN) They along with Sam and controversial new guy Jesse help people who accidentally get entangled with the mob or con artists, etc. At teh same time each season has an overarching mytharc (maybe spyarc would be more accurate) that ties in the individual episodes. Think SPN with more guns (yes more), more explosions, and no supernatural beings.
ReplyDeleteWith Alec as lead they may have made it to season 3. I loved Dark Angel too, just not Max. What I like best is that I see traces of Dean in Alec and traces of Alec in Dean. Almost like watching Dean grow up on screen. Well... if there were genetic mutants instead of demons and monsters. You also see Jensen Ackles grow as an actor. Where once he used broad gestures now he only needs to move an eyebrow to convey the same meaning.

ReplyDeleteWarning - Dark Angel is super cheesy, but in a fun way. Also Max is annoying the second season. It's better to tune her out and concentrate on Alec (played by Jensen Ackles). Jensen is in only one episode of season 1 though. The producers liked him so much they added a character just for him in the second season.

ReplyDeleteI stopped watching when Jess came on the show and it was all about who Rory was going to choose. I liked Dean a lot and didn't think Rory was good enough for him. later I found out Dean and Rory had an affair and I was glad I stopped before I ended up hating the writers too.

ReplyDeletePS - Dean is my favorite character right now and he has been for the last 5 years. That's a record for me. Usually they only last 2-3 years before my fickle heart turns to someone new. When Dean talks to Lucas about his mom in episode 3, he took root in my life and I've been enthralled ever since.
Oh, I've just noticed it's not "the best ever" any more. Now it's about the fav one, right? So a character doesn't really have to be special or interesting or complicated, now it's just about wheter I like them or not? interesting.

hey, I totally forgot about Gilmore Girls, man, there were a lot of great characters there!! I mean, almost all of them were so awesome, except Rory lol I hated her. But Loreali, Luke, Emily (gotta love that grandma), Paris, even Michel were all very unique and interesting characters. And then Jess, wow, he was awesome. I mean, he may not have been a twisted, complicated, tragic or whatever character, he was pretty simple, yet there was something special about this sweet-guy-inside-of-a-bad-boy, smart character. Loved him.

ReplyDeleteI agree it would be hard to choose which is why it will be so interesting. People won't be able to blame anyone but their own fandom if their character doesn't win. We won't have one fandom in every vote and there will be so much controversy at the beginning of the contest that even more people will tune in. That would make it a more balanced fight all the way around. Say you don't like the vampire hordes...well they will take part of themselves out and we get to be there for the aftermath. ReplyDeleteanyway, I switch favourites pretty often too, usually. But with Dean it's different. You just can't go past this character and don't care, not with all his tragedy, with his Impala, his humour, with his "watch out for Sammy" and all the other things that make Dean Dean. he's just too perfect for words. I mean, not that he's perfect, he does have his flaws, but he's the perfect character.

So that was like 8pm and i watch the WHOLE season 1 on internet lol then I started season 2 cause geez season 1 final killed me lol. and falled a sleep of course after 3 episode (cause i hadnt slept in 36 hours not cause its bad). and 5 hours later I woke up took the car bought season 1 2 3 4 and watch them in 4 days and took me 1 day to watch season 5. I SAID I WAS CRAZY!! believe me now? ahaha. and that's not all 2 days after finishing season 5 i got my best friend to watch season 1 with me and now we are at season 2 ep 5 in 2 weeks. ahhahah. I LOVE IT

Ben, the young sexy hunter learns to take on the supernatural with his equally sexy, culturally diverse, multi-gender friends. While overcoming his daddy abandonment issues, he deals with the aftermath of his drug addiction and tries to keep peace among his friends who have all dated each other at least twice. In the first episode they take on a ghost in a swanky New York penthouse where they meet sexy teen girls with a passion for shopping who still don't seem to wear any clothes. Jealousy ensues which makes taking down the ghost more complicated. In this and every subsequent episode at least 2 hotties get naked and someone throws a hissy fit about something. Occassionally, Lisa Braedon shows up to give "Dr. Phil" advice and make sure their self-esteem remains high even after bailing them out of jail for a bar fight where someone reveals a super-special secret that CHANGES EVERYTHING!!!
ReplyDeleteI watched episode 1 for the genre, episode 2 for Dean's snarky humor/Metallicar/classic rock, episode 3 for Dean's devotion to helping others/scare factor, and episode 4 and every other episode after for his ability to talk with children (not just at them)/his family drama and most of all because he is the world's best big brother. I have a thing for brother stories and he remains my favorite brother of all time. (Well besides my own brother of course.)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear they had an actual reason, but did they really have to make it so permanent? Couldn't he have just gotten a job in another city? Then he could come back to visit in more than just flashbacks and dream sequences. I see why you like Jack best now. It used to be a tie for me between Jack and Angela, but after Angela totally screwed him up with the wedding, Jack is by far my favorite character with Booth as second.
ReplyDeleteThey used to call Jared Cute!Dean and Jensen Hot!Dean because a lot of people were confused. Still, after 5 years of SPN, it's awkward for me to catch a GG rerun and see Sam being called Dean. There's only one Dean for me now. BTW the names died away when they started seeing how well these two acted together and the hot factor became secondary and then non-existent.

I mean, with seasons 4&5 I used to watch like 5 episodes a day - once a week!!! - and even then I sometimes went like: "ok, don't really remember what happened" and had to rewatch them before getting to the next ones. So the way you did it is pretty stunning for me ;)

I watched VD for 3 episodes. Surely that qualifies me to speak on their behalf too, don't you think. If it's VD vs Lost, I'll join in. Hmm...Vampires are the greatest monsters ever. They are superhot and have all those great powers. If Damon and Stephan were on that island, they would have creamed the Smoke Monster on the first day. And really...Smoke Monster...what's up with that? VD has much better monsters than Lost. How's that?

lol yeah i love that now it's when i watch gilmore girls that i find it weird to hear Sam. took me 3seasons to get the switch lol. Wich for me is only 3 days LOL. oh my god. Oh and by the way, I do have a life lol. I just didnt have a job for three weeks ahahah

Now no fair. Then we can't have VD characters and the completely polarizing effect that show has on everyone in the contest. It just wouldn't be as fun and agonizing without the VD.
ReplyDeletelol! I dont agree with lindzos, i get your point But its not the same as for the best show. To know if its really great we need more then one cause the first one is always good (with some exeptions) but I think 22 episodes with a character is enough to judge if its a good one and if you like it or not. Only took me 1 epside to fall in love with Castiel and by the end of season 4 he was one a my fav character ever.

"Favorite Character" ? huh - first - that is an awsome idea. Please do that. Today was the 30th day on the BEst Show competition - and I was like: WOW a whole month has already passed and suddenly the hiatus doesn't seem that horrible.

agreed to everything you said here. When I started watching SPN I couldn't help thinking Dean reminded me of Alec in a way, and not just because of his looks lol you're right with growing up too - Alec is just like a young confused wild Dean from the past ;) and then I totally agree about the eyebrow moving lol jensen is now awesome with playing only by his slight facial expressions ;)
