Day 18: And so we say goodbye to a potential favourite for the overall win as Glee faded into nothingness, failing to find the spark that saw it achieve a huge 2000 votes in Round 2 with a measly 300+ score today. Whether word didn't get around, or Glee-ists have lost interest, it no longer matters, it is The Office that will be carrying the comedy chips into the quarter finals to take on one of todays big two, those being Fringe and The Wire. This is a real big one, potentially the biggest contest we have had so far in terms of the bug guns of the competition, with Fringe seeing off two very tough opponents, and The Wire breezing into this Round against two of the smaller shows that made the final 64. It's gonna be close, interesting, and a winner in waiting will be saying goodbye to the title for this year in the next 24 hours. Let the Battle Commence...

Fringe vs. The Wire
Fringe

Seasons: 2 (Ongoing)
Previous Results: R1. WON vs. Legend of the Seeker (54.32%) R2. WON vs. Firefly (86.65%)
Major Awards: None
Format: Science Fiction/Thriller/Horror/Drama
Synopsis: The series follows a Federal Bureau of Investigation "Fringe Division" team based in Boston, Massachusetts under the supervision of Homeland Security. The team uses unorthodox "fringe" science and FBI investigative techniques to investigate "the Pattern", a series of unexplained, often ghastly occurrences that are happening all over the world. The show has been described as a hybrid of The X-Files, Altered States, The Twilight Zone, and Dark Angel.

Fringe is one of the few shows I can think of that actually succeeds in achieving a balance between the various story elements. It has a little bit of everything: drama, suspense, emotion, humour, science fiction, character development… you name it. In a word, Fringe is brilliant. The stories are intriguing and engaging, the acting is top of the line, the characters are people you can relate to, and the quality of each episode is simply amazing. It’s a show that makes you think, without getting too complicated or overwhelmed in its own story and it provides real answers in a timely manner. For those who love to dissect every episode and analyze all the clues and themes, there is more than enough to keep you busy. On the other hand, those who simply want to watch the show from week to week without thinking about it in between can do that and still enjoy it and be entertained. Fringe is as good as it gets. If you have ever wondered if you should watch Fringe, I would highly recommend it because, odds are, you’ll love it and will wonder why it took you so long to start watching.

The Wire

Seasons: 5 (Finished)
Previous Results: R1. WON vs. It's always Sunny in Philadelphia (66.55%) R2. WON vs.The Mentalist (58.19%)
Major Awards: None
Format: Drama
Synopsis: Each season of The Wire focuses on a different facet of the city of Baltimore. They are, in order: the illegal drug trade, the port system, the city government and bureaucracy, the school system, and the print news media. The large cast consists mainly of character actors who are little known for their other roles. Simon has said that despite its presentation as a crime drama, the show is "really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals, and how whether you're a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge or a lawyer, you are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution you've committed to."

  1. We need Youtube Videos & Reviews for Dexter & Smallville for tomorrows showdown!

I voted Fringe. Because now, without LOST, it is the best on TV :)

  2. Dexter and Smallville compete for the title tomorrow? Wow. I might have to toss a coin because both of them are among my favorite shows!

  3. The Wire is simply my 2nd favourite show and what I think it is the best show ever behind Lost, so my vote goes to The Wire.

  4. ahemm... *cough*SupernaturalBreakingBadDexter*Cough*
While I completely agree its one of the best shows on tv right now, I'd be hard pressed to call it the best--yet. If season 3 delivers like season 2, I'll jump on that bandwagon like you'd never believe.

  5. You ever heard of the show called, The Shield? Very good show. I've never seen The Wire, I've heard it was very good but I've heard that The Shield is a lot like The Wire. Check it out some time!

  6. Yes, I've actually watched The Shield too, definitely in My Top 10.

  7. FRINGE!!!!! Hands down... it's the best on TV!!!! *woooot*

  8. Where do you go to vote for Summer Glau ?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Just... No.
There are at least 7 or 8 shows currently on air that are way better than Fringe.

I really tried my hardest to get into The Wire. I even bought the first season on DVD. I'd heard it was amazing... But I just could not get into it. It never grabbed my interest. I'm sure it's more than a cop show, but after like 8 episodes I just got too damn bored. :/ Sorry guys.

    Fringe gets my vote.

  11. Couldn't agree more. Season 3 can't start soon enough!!!

  12. 7 or 8? You have to be kidding, right?!

Just tell me one... I'd believe you if you'd have said at least one show that's way better, but 7 or 8?! o.Ô

  13. Totally with you on that. :D

  14. I'm currently going through the Wire and am about halfway through season 4. So far I feel the series is slightly overrated although still excellent. Fringe on the other hand I just do not enjoy. Probably the only project JJ Abrams has been associated with in the last decade that I just can't get into.

Also, I haven't been keeping up with the results of the contest, but looking at it today there have been some strange upsets as far as "best show ever". Smallville over The Sorpranos? Stargate over Breaking Bad? Flash Forward over Friends? I think that last one is the biggest surprise, I had no idea there were a significant number of fans of FlashForward. I'm not criticizing the contest I know it is just for fun, just pointing out the surprises I noticed.

  15. I'm told the Wire is amazing...but I just can't get into Crime Dramas...vote has to go to one of my two favorite shows right now, Fringe.

  16. I'm not. Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy, Justified, Treme, Spartacus, 30 Rock, Big Love. Here are 8 series way better than Fringe.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's all personal taste. Personally I don't like those shows and think they pale in comparison to Fringe. They don't have the same appeal that Fringe does for me, hence personal taste. It's not a fact that they are better series than Fringe, just your personal opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Their quality in writing, directing and interpretation are not subject to personal taste, those are objective qualities.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's because this poll is connected to a Lost fans blog, and also most people who come to this site seem to prefer genre shows. In terms of actual quality and general fandom over the wide tv-watching population, Flash Forward and Smallville would never win over The Sopranos and Friends.

  20. Where are the 4000 Fringe-Voters from Round 2?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Haha at Spartacus and this past season of Big Love and 30 Rock having better writing and direction than Fringe.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Big Love should not be on that list. Seasons 1-3 were worthy of being compared to those other shows, but season 4 was just awful. I do love the shows on that list though :).

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am surprised The Wire is winning. If Fringe loses, at least it was against a great show :(

The Wire is clearly the better show. By a huge margin. I enjoy Fringe though for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That's what I'm asking myself right now. I was expecting to drown in the Fringe votes...

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm sorry that you don't agree with me, but sadly for you, my words are right.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Even tough I admit that Season 4 of Big Love wasn't at the Season 3 level, it still was a more than worthy season.

    ReplyDelete
  28. As it's been said, it's personal preference...but I also don't believe you can compare certain shows to each other. IE: Fringe versus 30 Rock (which has it's worst season ever this year compared to an awesome Fringe Season).

Mad Men - Great show, though I haven't seen the latest season.
Sons of Anarchy - was entertaining, but was too busy with other shows.
Sparacus - Not so much for me
Big Love - not really into the show, more into Fringe
Breaking Bad - I've heard good things, gotta look at seeing it
Justified - Alright, I honestly couldn't get into it

That being said, I don't think any of these shows are WAY better than Fringe...some are better perhaps (Mad Men), but Fringe is a high quality television show IMO.

  29. It is a good question. Not showing up today it seems. 16 mins for a miraculous turnaround :P

    ReplyDelete
  30. Absolutely not. The writing and acting were still excellent, but the pacing and plot direction were horrific.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well, I'm sorry, but I totally disagree.
