Best Show Ever 2.4d - Alias vs. The X Files

Updated Brackets HERE

Day 16: Today is the final day of the Second Round of the Best Show Ever Competition, and we will be moving onto Round 3 very soon. However, depending on a few circumstances, I may be unable to post the first battle of Round 3 until Friday, as I am heading away for a few days, which I had hoped wouldn't stop the competition, but it is a remote area in Wales and I may not get enough connection to get on the internet, maybe none at all. However I will be back after my short break raring to continue with the competition, and I hope you all will be back too :) Anyhow, yesterday we saw Supernatural thrash Mad Men in a surprisingly one-sided encounter which sparked a few arguments in the comments over which truly deserved the place in Round 3, yet it seemed Supernatural had a dominant position throughout the day and Man Men never challenged. Supernatural is on my list of things to watch, and I intend to watch the top few shows of the competition that I haven't already seen once we're done with the competition, and see if I agree with the majority. I would wager Supernatural will be there, or thereabouts. But is it good enough to win. That remains to be seen. In the other post, we said goodbye to MASH, and although I'm disappointed to see something I often here as a TV classic lose to one of many police procedural type shows, I was happy it reached the second round, and also gave a decent fight, taking 309 votes. NCIS appears more popular than I expected, and could yet be a dark horse for the win.

Onto today, and we have here two frontrunners for the crown meeting in Round 2. Many of the Brackets I have seen have put the winner of this battle into the semi finals at the least, yet there was no clear winner over which it will be. Chuck was a clear winner in Round 1, whilst Battlestar ground out a win, albeit against the tougher opposition of CSI. It's tough to call, and with results so surprising at times, I wouldn't bet much more than a lump of cheese on this one. It's up to you! Also today we have another tough battle, as Alias takes on The X Files, seeing two huge fan bases and cult shows taking the fight to the other. Again, I can't call it, and I can't wait to see who wins. Regardless of whether I have ant access to the internet, I have asked a friend to write down the scores at 1:30/2:00am English time tomorrow morning so I have the winner for when I return. I wish you all luck for your favourites, and more than likely have a great few days whilst I tour the shores of Wales. Let the Battles Commence.

Alias vs. The X Files
Alias

Seasons: 5 (Finished)
Previous Results: R1. WON vs. Friday Night Lights (72.71%)
Format: Action/Drama/Thriller/Science Fiction
Synopsis: It stars Jennifer Garner as Sydney Bristow, a CIA agent. The main theme of the series explores Sydney's obligation to conceal her true career from her friends and family, even as she assumes multiple aliases to carry out her missions. These themes are most prevalent in the first two seasons of the show. A major plotline of the series was the search for and recovery of artifacts created by Milo Rambaldi, a Renaissance-era character with similarities to both Leonardo da Vinci and Nostradamus. This plot and some technologies used in the series pushed Alias into the genre of science fiction.
Fan Review: Hoops2448
Alias has multiple reasons why it is a great show. The main reason is that it has a great balance between action and character. The show resolves around a group of spies and the adventures/life and death situations they get into on the job. Because of this the action is a given but what the writers of Alias manage to do is create very real relationship drama in between all the action which grounds the series. Secondly the music in Alias much like that used in LOST is created by Michael Giacchino who balances the different tones of the show in his music with the action scenes having a fast paced techno beat and personal scenes having a slow and light tone. This show is a must watch because not only is the action fun but the characters are too with Jack Bristow, the father of lead character Sydney Bristow, standing out more than the others.

The X Files

Seasons: 9 (Finished)
Format: Drama/science fiction/horror/mystery/thriller
Synopsis: In the series, FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are the investigators of X-Files: marginalized, unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. Mulder is a believer in the existence of aliens and the paranormal, while Scully, a skeptic, is assigned to make scientific analyses of Mulder's discoveries.

  1. Wow, hopefully this goes through and the X-Files advances. If it does, I'll have to submit a review considering this is still my favorite show of all time.

  2. Agreed! Everything you see in every other paranormal investigation series from Supernatural to The Mentalist and even the science based evidence procedurals ( ie every CSI) can trace their storytelling styles to The X-Files.

Even with the standalones, The X-Files had poetic writing with far less melodrama than Alias.

  4. TV owes alot to the X-Files. X Files brought cinema quality production values to TV as well as well as popularise the concept of ongoing story arcs. On the flipside, the last two seasons of the X-Files were so bad, Lost producers constantly credit it as a warning for them to not let story drag on too long.

  5. The X Files, of course - bought the whole series plus two movies in one huge box set from Amazon UK! Alias was an inferior clone of La Femme Nikita with Peta Wilson.

  6. which in turn can trace many of it's ideas back to the twilight zone and others. the x files, while amazing, was hardly groundbreaking

  7. Every show has inspiration from something. IMO, the X-Files did quite a few things no one ever did. They certainly shot the show in a much more cinematic nature and the show wasn't afraid to do certain things others were.

The episode from Season 4 entitled "Home" is a great example of a story no one else would have told on tv.

  8. Hardly groundbreaking? You must be joking. Not only was it groundbreaking on the actual television side of things, but also pertaining to the whole concept of fandom. Hell, the term "shipper" derived from "The X-Files."

  9. Even though I have watched each Alias episode around 3 times (my mom got my sister and me a little obsessed), while I am too young to have seen more than just a couple X-files episodes and the movies, I still voted for X-Files. Just watching the little of it I have, I was amazed at how each episode was more provocative, dramatic, and thrilling than 2/3 of the horror/thriller/suspenseful investigative movies out there. Also, I noticed that that multiple plot lines were very, very similar to some of my favorite more recent shows, like Alias, Bones, and Fringe.

  15. dr who - groundbreaking.

    twilight zone - groundbreaking.

lol you're argument is, 'they gave us the term shipper'. fans gave you the word 'shipper' (and there isn't even a direct link to x-files), mate. and to assume this idea of a 'shipper' is original to the x files... well, it's foolish at best, pretentious at worst.

like i said, i thought the x files were great. never groundbreaking.

  16. I was just giving one example of "The X-Files" influence on fandom. I never said that the actual TV series gave the public the term "shipper." I guess I have to spell this out for you. I just said it derived from the TV series, in that it was the first TV series that had a concrete association with the term. Of course, the fans had to do with that. Are you saying that fans of a TV series have no link to a TV series? That would make absolutely no sense, considering that if there are fans, then there's a link. Anyway, you're obviously not old enough to remember how the term "shipper" started with "The X-Files." This was during the period when the internet was initially starting to become familiar with the masses. Do you know or remember what newsgroups are? "The X-Files" is considered the first TV series that truly used the internet on a large scale as it pertains to fandom.

Let me ask you something, do you even consider any TV series from the '90s (particularly early-90s') groundbreaking?

    ReplyDelete
  17. none that immediately come to mind, no. probably reality tv would be the closest thing (from the top of my head) able to adopt the term 'groundbreaking', but even that has a very weak claim to that title. on film though, you have toy story, which was definitely groundbreaking.

if you can think of any examples of a groundbreaking show that i obviously have not thought of, then post and i'll give my opinion. but, largely, no.

    it's just my opinion though.
