Starz has obtained the rights to the confirmed 4th season of Torchwood for the US, while BBC 1 will air it in the UK, in the summer of 2011. The press release is below from BBC:
Key cast - John Barrowman (Capt. Jack), Eve Myles (Gwen) – to return for the next installment, along with new faces
Monday 7th June 2010
BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Worldwide and US premium entertainment network, Starz Entertainment, have today announced a three way co-production partnership that will develop a new series of the hit BBC sci-fi drama Torchwood. BBC Worldwide will also distribute the series to broadcasters globally.
The 10-episode instalment will be written by a team led by Torchwood creator, Russell T Davies, and produced by BBC Worldwide Productions. Davies and BBC Worldwide Productions’ SVP Scripted, Julie Gardner, return as executive producers with BBC Worldwide Productions EVP Jane Tranter. The series has been commissioned by Controller BBC ONE, Jay Hunt, Controller BBC Drama, Ben Stephenson, and Starz President and CEO, Chris Albrecht.
While previous series were based on location in Cardiff, Wales, this new instalment will see storylines widen to include locations in the U.S. and around the world. John Barrowman and Eve Myles will return in their roles as Captain Jack and Gwen respectively, along with new faces.
Announcing the commission, Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning said: "We have a long history of working with many U.S. networks but it is incredibly exciting to be working with Starz for the first time, as well as to be reunited with the best of British in Russell, Jane and Julie. Torchwood will burst back onto the screen with a shocking and moving story with global stakes and locations that will make it feel bigger and bolder than ever"
Jane Tranter, EVP, BBC Worldwide Productions, added: "Torchwood has attracted remarkable attention and loyalty in both the UK and U.S., and in this new partnership with Starz, the next chapter will not only reward our current fans, but also introduce new viewers to the most impressive instalment yet."
"We're committed to programming exceptional television that is entertaining, imaginative and provides a premium TV experience, and by any measure the new concept for Torchwood fits that mandate," Starz, LLC, President and CEO Chris Albrecht said. "I've been part of successful partnerships with Jane Tranter and the BBC previously, and I'm very much looking forward to working with them again."
Torchwood is a drama that puts extraterrestrial threats into a very real world, and asks how humanity deals with the danger - while fighting human's darkest instincts. The series was originally commissioned and produced in 2006 by BBC Cymru Wales, with the latest high octane series capturing UK audiences of more than 6 million.
BBC Worldwide has distributed previous Torchwood series around the world to territories such as Korea, Japan, Italy, Spain, Israel, Russia and across Latin America.

noooooooo! NO! NO!!!! WHY STARZ???? Will they do Itunes? I will NOT subscribe to starz!
ReplyDeleteI love watching Torchwood on BBCAmerica .! .. not too keen on the idea of needing to be sure I have Starz on my TV plan. BUT, as a loyal Netflixer, I can at least cling to the hope that ALL Torchwood episodes - new season as well as old - will be immediately available as Watch Instantly selections. Thank you BBC for listening to the cries of all the loyal Torchwood fans. Thank you Mr. Davies for giving Capt. Jack and Gwen more time with us. The international locations idea is fascinating ... it would be really awesome if we get to meet actors from more than the "usual suspect" nations (i.e.: US, Canada, Japan, Australia). There are some great actors in Denmark, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Thailand, Africa, Russia and of course, India (among many others) who speak English. Taking Torchwood that internation would be simply amazing!
ReplyDeleteGood to see torchwood come back to the screen. I hope the US staition does not f...k it up. I love it the way it is, just in the cardif area. Russell don`t make to many changes to the scripts. The US all ways try to copy the UK shows and frankly the never get it right and the show ends pretty quick cause of bad ratings. Don`t spoil a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI have recently fallen in love with the Dr Who world. I did not think Torchwood could be that good without that other world aspect, I was wrong. Great show and I am extatic that season 4 is on the way, I don't care who carries it, I will get it some how. Netflix is paying for itself with this one.
ReplyDeleteI am a hugh fan of torchwood. it would be most annoying if we have to pay to watch the show.I which the US TV broadcast didn`t get there hands on the spripts. Russell all you have done is sold yourself out and not think of the show. I hope the tv networks don`t wreck the show as they do with all other remakes.Leave it the way it is. Gwen,Martha,Mickey,Lady Christina and Alonso would be good for the new season.why should we have to pay to watch these shows as they are a free to air show and is broadcast on a free to air tv.
ReplyDelete/agree...have so missed Torchwood. Didn't think I'd be able to stomach a season w/o Ianto, but "absence makes the heart grow fonder" and what-not. I miss Jack. A lot. Gwen - not so much. Reese, surprisingly more-so. And, of course the US station will "f" it up, cuz, well, that's what our stations do *facepalm* but I'll hold onto the "there's always the DVD" sentiment and persevere.
ReplyDeleteYESSSSSSS. TORCHWOOD IS BACK.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait till next year. <3
I WANT IANTO. ;~;
You can always watch it online...... YAY!!!!! Been waiting, very patiently mind you, to hear a definite date and channel.
ReplyDeleteUK does the same thing buddy.......
ReplyDeleteA-MEN!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI just finished Children of Earth. And well, as a gay man, I am really sad to see Ianto go. It was so amazing to see his relationship with Jack so prominent and at the same time "no big deal." I'm man enough to admit that I teared up whenever they shared a kiss. His passing was very hard to watch. This show, along with Doctor Who, is an example of THE BEST writing on television. I'm hesitant and also excited for the new season. I will hold out hope that Ianto will somehow come back. It is, after all science fiction. Good journey, brother.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't take much to get you Brits to start spouting your nationalistic hate does it? So there might be an ep set in America, don't worry. I'm sure it will be as Anti-American as everything else the BBC puts out . Perhaps they will portray us all as morbidly obese gun toting lunatics again. Wouldn't that be clever and groundbreaking.
ReplyDeleteStraight female here, but I share your sadness. I thought Jack and Ianto were a beautiful couple. I don't want to get my hopes up, because "Americanized" shows don't tend to fare too well, but I can't seem to help myself. I'm an American, but even I can't defend the SyFy version of Being Human.
ReplyDelete::hangs head in shame::
I'm American as well, but I've always been drawn to Brit TV. The shorter "seasons" allow for tighter story-telling, plus I get weak in the knees for that accent :) I've been watching the US version of "Being Human" but only because I haven't gotten to the BBC version in my NetFlix queue... It's not very compelling, a bit too whiny. As for the new season of TW, Starz didn't shy away from ANYTHING in regards to "Spartacus" so I have hope :)
ReplyDeleteStarz shows have a way of migrating to Netflix, so that is another way you can view it. Personally I have no problem with subscribing up to Starz just to watch Torchwood. I subscribed to Showtime just to watch Dexter.
ReplyDeleteOne example of the US screwing up a great BBC series would be "Life on Mars". The US version was a major disappointment. The pay cable stations do good work, take a look at Dexter for an example of a good pay cable show.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you consider Yanto, Gay or bi? Remember that his first love was Lisa.
ReplyDeleteI guess we can't really label him since he did say to his sister, "It's not men, it's him. Just him." (referring to Capt. Jack) Which goes along with Jack's "omnisexuality". It's the spirit within the body that's attractive, not the physical make-up. But I responded so fiercely because there is an absolute lack of strong male/male relationships on TV. So to answer your question in contemporary framing, bi.
ReplyDelete"why should we have to pay to watch these shows as they are a free to air show and is broadcast on a free to air tv."
ReplyDeleteWhere is it broadcast on free to air TV? Certainly not in the US where it is available on BBC America which is a cable channel. Most people pay for their cable TV. I have Cox cable in San Diego where BBC America is not even included in the basic cable collection but is available for an additional fee, which I gladly pay for.
Was it Jack, or his 52nd century pheromones? I wonder if Jack fancies someone then his body starts pumping out the pheromones and they fall?
ReplyDeleteIt's not remotely hate to say that 'Americanized' shows happen to always fail because they are just crap. It's like asking the BBC to copy Criminal Minds or Bones. It would be a shocking failure.
ReplyDeleteRemember the US Doctor Who mess you made? That was enough for the BBC to start categorically you will never get another chance with any movie of that show ever again.
Men on Mars, The Office and probably a lot more remade British shows.
Thats not to say the US don't make the best television shows, because you do by a very long distance. We could never make shows like Dexter, Bones, Criminal Minds and other top rated shows. Being British myself I can tell you straight out that we make some of the worst television shows on the planet. The fact the BBC only have 3 successful television shows outside of Natural History..should speak volumes of how badly crap the BBC are..hell all the other channels here in the UK are pitiful compared to US television. So no there is not nationalistic hatred going on at all, its just a matter of fact that we are generally cack at making television shows.
Some things we make are culturally excellent for example Doctor Who, Torchwood and Merlin these shows no one could recreate and they shouldn't touch them. These shows are embedded culturally with the UK, it's what makes them unique and you meddle with stuff out of sheer desperation it will fail spectacularly.
However in this case the show is still being produced by the BBC, filming in a number of locations throughout the world, with funding coming from the BBC and Starz. This show will be written by the exact same people who wrote it before, it's hardly going to be remade as 'updated'. The BBC still own the franchise and they have sold the rights to air this show in the states to 'Starz' because they where willing to pay good money for it, and they where willing to be partners and provide needed money for a show that would have ended last year due to less funding..this despite the fact the BBC had announced season 4 before going into partnership with anyone..and then being told they needed to find another source for the money...for UK fans its still an entirely UK production by the exact same production team who have always made this show and Doctor Who.
I've been a committed fan of Torchwood since its launch in 2006, I just hope this move by the BBC to appeal to American audiences won't spoil the classic cult series that us Brits know and love. A main reason for Torchwood's success was its connections to the show Doctor Who, which the US have not embraced as the UK has. Hit UK shows such as life on mars and Skins haven't done down well with American audiences. Let's hope Torchwood gets the recognition it deserved in the US and pleases UK audiences alike
