Day 7: And so we begin the polls for the final section of the first round, and boy have we had some shockers so far. Yesterday's poll 'The West Wing vs. LOST' broke the record for the number of votes, and totally eclipsed all the other three polls. The West Wing may have lost and be out, but it scored more than the total of each of the other polls. For a while, it had a 14% lead and over 200 votes, but as America woke up, the lead disintegrated. It's a shame for such a good show, I have seen the first season and thoroughly enjoyed it, and I wish it could have got further but like 'The Sopranos' and 'Friends' amongst others, we say goodbye for now. Through is therefore 'LOST' with a huge 2000+ votes, as well as 'Doctor Who', 'The OC' and in a very close battle that tossed an turned all day, comedy beat mystery as 'Seinfeld' eliminated 'Twin Peaks.'

Today here we have the very popular funeral home drama 'Six Feet Under' taking on Police Procedural NCIS and the forever beloved 70's hit 'MASH' taking on the short-lived HBO 'Carnivale.' I've heard some very good things about this show. Also today we have in the other post Supernatural vs. Freaks and Geeks & Mad Men vs. Northern Exposure which you can view here: Best Show Ever 1.4a

NCIS

Seasons: 7 (ongoing)
Format: Police Procedural/Drama
Synopsis: An American police procedural drama television series revolving around a fictional team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which conducts criminal investigations involving the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
Fan Review: Alyssa
NCIS is a fabulous work of CBS. Its quirky comebacks and comedic relief makes it an unforgettable piece of work, and the cliff-hangers of the season's ends make everyone come back to watch more. The characters are a dysfunctional family, facing troubles every day, but the audience is always cheering for the favorite couples on the show. We get just enough of that bonding to partially settle us, but not enough to be thoroughly satisfied. NCIS is a classic, bringing procedural dramas to a whole new level, leaving the fans with an everlasting impression.

MASH vs. Carnivale
MASH

Seasons: 11 (Finished)
Format: Medical drama/Dramedy/Situation comedy/Black comedy/Satire/Military
Synopsis: MASH follows a team of doctors and support staff stationed at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in Uijeongbu, South Korea, during the Korean War.

Carnivale

Seasons: 2 (Finished)
Format: Drama/Mystery/Fantasy/Horror
Synopsis: an American television series set in the United States during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. In tracing the lives of two disparate groups of people, its overarching story depicts the battle between good and evil and the struggle between free will and destiny; the storyline mixes Christian theology with gnosticism and Masonic lore, particularly that of the Knights Templar. The show was filmed in Santa Clarita, California, and other Southern Californian locations.

  1. NCIS vs. Six Feet Under is the hardest one yet for me. I absolutely love NCIS, to me it's a procedural's non-procedural, but Six Feet Under was an exceptional show, from beginning to end. The last scene when Claire is driving and they flash forward to everyone's deaths still has the power to make me cry.....

  2. For some weird reason I chose NCIS on my bracket when I meant Six Feet Under. Silly me, now I had to vote for NCIS. I also voted for MASH because it's a classic.

  3. #ncis because it's the perfect combination of humor, action and drama. #mash because it's... #mash :)

This one is pretty easy. Six Feet Under has some of most realistic character and relationship studies on television, as well as its constant musings on death, dreams and existence. Hard to compare a series widely acclaimed for its artistry to what is, at best, a slightly above average procedural.

Carnivale was pretty intriguing but it never got to finish its run and left almost everything unresolved. MASH is also something that's never happened on tv ever again, humor-wise or drama-wise.

  5. wtf? Friends is out?
    AGAINST FLASHFORWARD?????????????????????????????????????
and an inferior sitcom, Seinfeld beats out Twin Peaks?
    everyone is ignorant around me...

  6. Picked Six Feet Under and Mash. I'm very suprised that Six Feet Under is not doing better *sigh* Bye Bye points. Again. So far I've been completely wrong, the times I bet on the more critical acclaimed series the one with the strong fanbase made it to the next round and when I picked the one with the strong fanbase, the critic's favorite managed to win. I'm scared at looking at my brackets because it's so sad and pointless, literally ;D

The issue with these polls is that it's more than fair to say that in a vast majority of them, people have not seen one or the other of the shows listed, and thus would vote for their favoured one, being the show they have watched, while the other one will lack in number of votes. Though of course the results are not restricted to this, as people may somehow prefer one to the other (SFU to NCIS, Sopranos to Smallville etc.) but the former explanation, in my opinion, is far more prevalent.

  9. So far the two trends I pick up is that people voting on this site seem to prefer shows from this decade more than shows from the past, and also the sci-fi/fantasy shows are winning out, even though they'd never win against the more critically-acclaimed programs in award shows like the Emmys. What I don't understand is why they are putting certain shows against each other. I guess it's supposed to be random, but it just makes absolutely no sense, because yeah, as other people have replied, the shows put against each other are usually so different that people only watch/like one or the other.

  10. Wouldn't it have made a million times more sense to have polls like Sopranos vs. Six Feet Under and Friends vs. Seinfeld? The random way the polls are now, the two shows are so very different from each other that probably a lot of fans only watch one show or another. And due to the nature of this blog, a lot more people are into sci-fi/fantasy shows than older, more critically acclaimed shows (not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm kinda like that too, but it just makes how they constructed the poll totally biased, putting shows like Smallville and the Sopranos against each other)

  11. I mean, they could just put Lost as the winner and have done with it, but I don't think this poll is constructed very fairly if Friends is already out! When they first asked for favorite shows, Friends looked like number 2 in popularity.

  12. Six Feet Under was an awesome show, I'm actually upset to see it losing. If you've never seen it, you might want to watch it someday. I think you'll like it. It also had one of the best finales ever IMHO.

    Thankfully MASH is winning though.
